Chapter Fifty-One (פֶּרֶק חֲמִשִּׁים וְאֶחָד)
The eyes of Ze’ir are red, black, and white, one within another (הָעֵינַיִם שֶׁל זְעֵיר הֵם אָדוֹם שָׁחוֹר וְלָבָן, זוֹ בְּתוֹךְ זוֹ), and the left eye possesses a very great black coloration (וְהָעַיִן הַשְּׂמָאלִי יֵשׁ לוֹ גּוֹן שַׁחֲרוּרִית גָּדוֹל מְאֹוד), and also from the power of the Gevurot were born the hairs of the eyelashes and the eyebrows which cause sleep (וְגַם מִכֹּחַ הַגְּבוּרוֹת נוֹלְדוּ הַשְּׂעָרוֹת שֶׁל רִיסֵי עֵינַיִם וְהַגַּבִּינִין הַגּוֹרְמִים שֵׁנָה), for they are judgment (כִּי הֵם דִּין), and this causes the departure of the Mochin (וְזֶהוּ גּוֹרֵם הִסְתַּלְּקוּת הַמּוֹחִין). This is not so with the eyes of Arich Anpin (מַה שֶּׁאֵין כֵּן בְּעֵינֵי אֲרִיךְ אַנְפִּין), for it has no eyebrows that cause sleep (שֶׁאֵין לוֹ גַּבִּינִין הַגּוֹרְמִים שֵׁנָה), therefore concerning Him it is said: “Behold, the Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps” (לָכֵן עָלָיו נֶאֱמַר הִנֵּה לֹא יָנוּם וְלֹא יִישָׁן שׁוֹמֵר יִשְׂרָאֵל) (Psalms 121:4), and it is called “the Open Eye and the Constant Guardian” (וְנִקְרָא עֵינָא פְקִיחָא וְנָטִיר תְּדִירָא) (Zohar Bamidbar 129b), for they have no eyelids (שֶׁאֵין לָהֶם עַפְעַפַּיִם), they do not close (אֵינָם נִסְגָּרִים), and there is no sleep within them (וְאֵין בָּהֶם שֵׁנָה). But the eyes of Ze’ir Anpin have eyelids and their hairs cause sleep (אֲבָל ז״א עֵינָיו יֵשׁ לָהֶם עַפְעַפַּיִם וּשְׂעָרוֹתֵיהֶם הַגּוֹרְמִים שֵׁנָה), and so it is in the Idra Rabba, Parashat Naso (וְכֵן הוּא בָּאִדְּרָא רַבָּא פָּרָשַׁת נָשֹׂא) (Zohar Bamidbar 136b), and this is its language (וְזֶה לְשׁוֹנוֹ): “The eyes of the Head differ from all other eyes” (עֵינִין דְּרֵישָׁא מִשְׁתַּנְיָין מִשְּׁאָר עֵינִין), “The fine streaks in the curvature above the eyelashes of the eyes” (שְׁרָקוּתָא דִּבְגַבְתָּא דְּעַל רִיסֵי עֵינִין), “darkens them with blackness” (מְכַחְלָן בְּאוּכָּמְתָא), meaning (כְּלוֹמַר), they apply kohl and color the color of the eyes (הֵם כּוֹחֵל וּמְצַבְּעִים צֶבַע שֶׁל הָעֵינַיִם). “They hang, mound upon mound of hairs” (תַּלְיָין תִּילִין עַל תִּילִין דְּשַׂעֲרֵי), “and they are the Tikkunim upon the eyes” (וְאִינוּן תִּיקּוּנִין דְּעַל עֵינִין), meaning (רָצָה לוֹמַר), from the hairs of the eyebrows of the eyelids (מִן שַׂעֲרוֹת הַגַּבִּינִין שֶׁל הָעַפְעַפַּיִם), from them comes the color of the blackness in the forehead of the Metzach [Forehead] (מֵהֶם בָּאָה הַצֶּבַע שֶׁל הַשַּׁחֲרוּת בְּרֵישָׁא דְּמִצְחָא), and it is the blackness born from the hairs of the head (וְהוּא הַשַּׁחֲרוּת הַנּוֹלָד מִשַּׂעֲרוֹת הָרֹאשׁ). “And they unite from both of them” (וּמִתְאַחֲדִין מִתַּרְוַויְיהוּ), meaning (רָצָה לוֹמַר), from the power of the hairs of the two eyelids of the eyes of Ze’ir (מִכֹּחַ שַׂעֲרוֹת שְׁנֵי עַפְעַפֵּי עֵינֵי זְעֵיר), “seven hundred thousand masters of supervision over the shutters of the eyes” (שְׁבַע מֵאָה אַלְפֵי מָארֵי דְּאַשְׁגָּחוּתָא דְּעַל תְּרִיסֵי דְעֵינִין), and these are the hairs of his eyelashes (וְהֵם שַׂעֲרֵי רִיסֵי עֵינָיו), and they are born from the seven Sefirot of Ze’ir of Tohu (וְהֵם נוֹלָדִים מִן ז׳ סְפִירוֹת זְעֵיר דְּתֹהוּ), included within ten and ten from ten (כְּלוּלִים מֵעֶשֶׂר וְעֶשֶׂר מֵעֶשֶׂר), thus they are seven hundred (הֲרֵי שְׁבַע מֵאוֹת). And afterward one hundred included within one hundred (וְאַחַר כָּךְ מֵאָה כְּלוּלָה מֵאָה), thus they are seven hundred thousand (הֲרֵי שִׁבְעָה מֵאָה אֶלֶף), masters of the Supernal supervision (בַּעֲלֵי הַהַשְׁגָּחָה הָעֶלְיוֹנָה), they are the angels and appointees (הֵם הַמַּלְאָכִים וְהַמְמֻנִּים), appointed to examine and supervise the deeds of human beings (לְעַיֵּן וּלְהַשְׁגִּיחַ עַל מַעֲשֵׂה בְּנֵי אָדָם), and they are the ones who record the steps of a man (וְהֵם הַסּוֹפְרִים מִצְעֲדֵי גָבֶר), whether for evil or for good (אִם הוּא לְרָעָה אוֹ לְטוֹבָה), and the thoughts of a man, his appointments, and his schemes (וּמַחְשְׁבוֹת אִישׁ וּפְקוּדוֹתָיו וְתַחְבּוּלוֹתָיו). “In the covering of the eyes” (בְּכַסּוּתָא דְעֵינִין), these are the hairs that cover the eyes (הֵם הַשְּׂעָרוֹת הַמְכַסִּים הָעֵינַיִם), blazing one thousand and four hundred myriads (לַהֲטִים אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאָה רִבּוֹא), “which are united in the eyebrows, for they are the covering” (דְּמִתְאַחֲדִין בְּגַבִּינִין דְּאִינְהוּ כַּסּוּתָא). And the number of one thousand and four hundred myriads (וְהַמִּסְפָּר שֶׁל אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאָה רִבּוֹא), is the secret of the letters MNTZP”KH (הֵן סוֹד אוֹתִיּוֹת מנצפ״ך), for they are five Gevurot (דְּאִינוּן ה׳ גְּבוּרוֹת), their number together is P”R [280] (מִסְפָּרָן יַחַד פ״ר), and each one is included from all five of them (וְכָל אֶחָד כְּלוּלָה מֵחֲמִשְׁתָּן), say now (אֱמוֹר מֵעַתָּה), five times P”R [280] is one thousand and four hundred myriads (ה׳ פְּעָמִים פ״ר הוּא אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת רִבּוֹא), those who grasp the eyelids (אוֹתָן הָאוֹחֲזִים בָּעַפְעַפַּיִם). And they are masters of harsh judgments (וְהֵם בַּעֲלֵי דִינִים קָשִׁים), “and the supervision of the eye of Atik Yomin is over them” (וְאַשְׁגָּחוּתָא דְּעֵינָא דְּעַתִּיק יוֹמִין עֲלַיְיהוּ), to sweeten them in their ascent above (לְמַתֵּק אוֹתָם בַּעֲלִיָּתָם לְמַעְלָה), to overcome as at the time of Minchah of Shabbat (לְהִתְגַּבֵּר כְּמוֹ בְּעֵת מִנְחָה שֶׁל שַׁבָּת). And this is what it says (וְזֶהוּ אוֹמְרוֹ): “At the time when those coverings ascend, he appears like one who awakens from his sleep” (בְּשַׁעְתָּא דְּסָלְקִין אִינוּן כַּסּוּתָא, אִתְחֲזֵי כְּמָאן דְּאִתְעַר מִשִּׁנְתֵּיהּ), meaning (רָצָה לוֹמַר), Ze’ir Anpin appears like a person who awakens from his sleep (זְעֵיר אַנְפִּין נִרְאֶה כְּמוֹ הָאָדָם שֶׁנֵּעוֹר מִשְּׁנָתוֹ), “and his eyes open and behold the Open Eye and are washed in one whiteness of the Good Eye” (וְאִתְפַּקְחָן עִינוֹי וְחָמָאן לְעֵינָא פְקִיחָא וְאִתְסַחָן בְּחַד חִוָּורָא דְעֵינָא טָבָא), this is as it is written: “washed with milk” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב רֹחֲצוֹת בֶּחָלָב) (Song of Songs 5:12), “what is ‘with milk’? With the first supernal whiteness” (מַאי בֶּחָלָב בְּחִוָּורָא דִלְעֵילָא קַדְמָאָה). “And at that time supervision of mercy is found” (וּבְהַהִיא שַׁעְתָּא אִשְׁתְּכַח אַשְׁגָּחוּתָא דְרַחֲמֵי), “and because of this, the prayer of Israel ascends” (וּבְגִין כָּךְ צְלוֹתָא דְיִשְׂרָאֵל סַלְקָא), for it is a time of favor (שֶׁהִיא עֵת רָצוֹן), “so that His eyes will open and be washed in that whiteness, as it is written: ‘Awake, why do You sleep, Hashem? Arise’” (בְּגִין דְּיִפְקַח עִינוֹי וְיִתְסְחוּן בְּהַהוּא חִוָּורָא דִכְתִיב עוּרָה לָמָּה תִישַׁן י״י הָקִיצָה) (Psalms 44:24). “And whenever His eyes are not opened, all the masters of judgment subdue Israel, and the other nations rule over them” (וְכָל זִימְנָא דְּעִינוֹי לָאו מִתְפַּקְחָן, כָּל מָארֵיהוֹן דְּדִינִין, כָּפְיָין לְהוּ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, וּשְׁאָר עַמִּין שָׁלְטִין עֲלַיְיהוּ), “and when His eyes open, they are washed in the Good Eye, and He has mercy upon Israel, and the eye turns and performs vengeance upon the other nations” (וּבְזִמְנָא דְּיִפְקַח עִינוֹי יִתְסְחוּן בְּעֵינָא טָבָא וְרַחֲמֵי עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְאִסְתַּחַר עֵינָא וְעָבִיד נוּקְמִין בִּשְׁאָר עַמִּין), this is as it is written: “Awaken and arise” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב הָעִירָה וְהָקִיצָה) (Psalms 35:23), “awaken, to be washed in that whiteness” (הָעִירָה לְאִתְסַחָאָה בְּהַהוּא חִוָּורָא), “arise, to perform vengeance upon those who subdue them” (הָקִיצָה לְמֶעְבַּד נוּקְמִין לְאִינוּן דְּכָפְיָין לוֹן). “When his eyes open, they appear beautiful” (עֵינוֹי כַּד אִתְפַּקְחָן אִתְחֲזוֹן שַׁפִּירִין), “like doves” (כְּיוֹנִים), in white, red, black, and green (בְּחִוָּור וְסוּמָק וְאוּכָם וְיָרוֹק), “and the white of the eye is not revealed except at the time when it gazes with the Good Eye” (וְעֵינָא חִוָּור לָא אִתְגַּלְיָא אֶלָּא בְּזִמְנָא דְּאִסְתַּכַּל בְּעֵינָא טָבָא), “and all those colors are washed in that whiteness” (וּמִתְסַחֲאִין כָּל אִינוּן גַּוְונִין בְּהַהוּא חִוָּור). “Colors run forth” (רָהֲטִין גַּוְונִין), for seven eyes of supervision are revealed (שֶׁמִּתְגַּלִּים שִׁבְעָה עֵינִים שֶׁל הַהַשְׁגָּחָה), emerging from the blackness of his eyes (הַיּוֹצְאִים מִשַּׁחֲרוּת עֵינָיו), as it is said: “Upon one stone are seven eyes” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר עַל אֶבֶן אַחַת שִׁבְעָה עֵינַיִם) (Zechariah 3:9). Who is the one stone (מִי הוּא אֶבֶן אַחַת), say: it is this blackness (הֱוֵי אוֹמֵר הַשַּׁחוֹר הַזֶּה), from which emerge the masters of supervision (שֶׁיּוֹצְאִים מִמֶּנּוּ מָארֵי הַהַשְׁגָּחָה). Furthermore (עוֹד), from the redness in the eyes emerge seven runners (מֵאוֹדֶם שֶׁבָּעֵינַיִם יוֹצְאִים שִׁבְעָה רָהֲטִים), who hasten in the work of this Supernal supervision (שֶׁמְּמַהֲרִים בִּמְלֶאכֶת הַהַשְׁגָּחָה הָעֶלְיוֹנָה הַזֹּאת), for they support the side of the left (שֶׁהֵם סוֹמְכִים צַד הַשְּׂמֹאל), and blaze in the fire of the northern side (וּמִתְלַהֲטִים בָּאֵשׁ שֶׁל צַד צָפוֹן), which sparkles from the Hod of Imma on the left side (הַמִּתְנוֹצֵץ מִן הוֹד דְּאִמָּא בְּצַד שְׂמֹאל), and the north of Ze’ir Anpin (וּצְפוֹן שֶׁל זְעֵיר אַנְפִּין). And they are grasped there (וַאֲחוּזִים מִשָּׁם), to spread throughout the world (לְהִתְפַּשֵּׁט בָּעוֹלָם), to reveal the ways of the wicked (לְגַלָּאָה דַּרְכֵי הָרְשָׁעִים), who perform their deeds in darkness (הָעוֹשִׂים בַּמַּחְשָׁךְ מַעֲשֵׂיהֶם), and retribution is exacted from them (וְנִפְרָעִים מֵהֶם), as it is said: “These seven are the eyes of Hashem, they roam throughout all the earth” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר שִׁבְעָה אֵלֶּה עֵינֵי י״י הֵמָּה מְשׁוֹטְטִים בְּכָל הָאָרֶץ) (Zechariah 4:10). From the green color in the eyes spread seven illuminations (מִגּוֹן יָרוֹק שֶׁבָּעֵינַיִם מִתְפַּשְּׁטִים שִׁבְעָה נְהִירִין), which illuminate the world (הֵם הַמְּאִירִים אֶת הָעוֹלָם), for they are from the balanced color (כִּי הֵם מִגּוֹן הַמְּמוּזָג), and they are connected to the southern side (וְהֵם מְקוּשָּׁרִים לְצַד דָּרוֹם), and they grasp from there (וְאוֹחֲזִים מִשָּׁם), to spread throughout the world (לְהִתְפַּשֵּׁט בָּעוֹלָם), to reveal the deeds of human beings (לְגַלּוֹת מַעֲשֵׂה בְּנֵי אָדָם), until below, in the Heikhalot [Palaces] (עַד שֶׁלְּמַטָּה בַּהֵיכָלוֹת), hosts of angels and operative names emerge from them (יוֹצְאוֹת מֵהֶם כִּתּוֹת מַלְאָכִים וּשְׁמוֹת פּוֹעֲלִים), carrying out their appointed watch (מִשְׁמַרְתָּם), as it is written: “For His eyes are upon the ways of a man” (דִּכְתִיב כִּי עֵינָיו עַל דַּרְכֵי אִישׁ) (Job 34:21), “to know every man’s deeds” (לָדַעַת כָּל אִישׁ מַעֲשֵׂהוּ). “When they are washed in the whiteness from Arich” (כַּד אִתְסַחִין בְּחִוָּורָא מֵאֲרִיךְ), “they are found to supervise the masters of truth” (מִשְׁתַּכְחִין לְהַשְׁגִּיחַ עַל מָארֵי קְשׁוֹט), they are the true Tzaddikim (הֵם צַדִּיקֵי אֱמֶת), to benefit the world on their account (לְהֵיטִיב לָעוֹלָם בַּעֲבוּרָם), and all the supervision is for good (וְכָל הַהַשְׁגָּחָה הוּא לְטוֹבָה), at that time upon Israel (בְּאוֹתוֹ הַפַּעַם עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל). And He supervises through the color of redness (וּמַשְׁגִּיחַ בְּגוֹן הָאוֹדֶם), upon those who afflict them (לְאוֹתָם שֶׁמְּצֵרִים לָהֶם), and this is what the verse says: “I have surely seen the affliction of My people” (וְזֶהוּ שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב רָאֹה רָאִיתִי אֶת עֳנִי עַמִּי) (Exodus 3:7), meaning (רְצוֹנוֹ לוֹמַר), I have seen to take vengeance (רָאִיתִי לִנְקוֹם נָקָם), upon those who afflict, oppress, and pressure them (מֵאוֹתָם הַמְצַעֲרִים וְדוֹחֲקִים וְלוֹחֲצִים אוֹתָם). And because of this the verse says (וּבַעֲבוּר זֶה אוֹמֵר הַכָּתוּב): “Awake, why do You sleep, Hashem? Arise, do not cast us off forever” (עוּרָה לָמָּה תִישַׁן י״י הָקִיצָה אַל תִּזְנַח לָנֶצַח) (Psalms 44:24). “Awake” and “Arise” (עוּרָה וְהָקִיצָה), are two modes of supervision (שְׁתֵּי הַשְׁגָּחוֹת), the two eyes of Ze’ir are open (שְׁתֵּי עֵינֵי זְעֵיר פְּקוּחוֹת), two benefits come from them for Israel (שְׁתֵּי טוֹבוֹת מֵהֶם לְיִשְׂרָאֵל), mercy from one eye (רַחֲמִים מֵעַיִן אֶחָד), and vengeance upon their enemies from the side of the left eye (וּנְקָמוֹת לְאוֹיְבֵיהֶם מִצַּד עַיִן שְׂמֹאל). But in Arich Anpin (אֲבָל בַּאֲרִיךְ אַנְפִּין), there is only the action of one eye (אֵין שָׁם אֶלָּא פְּעֻלַּת עַיִן אֶחָד), the first is mercy (הָאֶחָד רַחֲמֵי), and the second is mercy within mercy (וְהַשֵּׁנִי רַחֲמֵי גּוֹ רַחֲמֵי) (Zohar Bamidbar 145b), from below upward (מִמַּטָּה לְמַעְלָה), and the one who understands will understand (וְהַמֵּבִין יָבִין).
And even though we said that the eyes of Ze’ir have the colors red, black, white, and green (וְאַף עַל פִּי שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ שֶׁעֵינֵי זְעֵיר יֵשׁ לָהֶם גּוֹן אָדוֹם שָׁחוֹר לָבָן יָרוֹק), nevertheless, since it receives influence from the Open Eye of Arich Anpin (עִם כָּל זֹאת כֵּיוָן שֶׁמְּקַבֵּל הַשְׁפָּעָה מֵעֵינָא פְקִיחָא דַאֲרִיךְ), everything returns to white (הַכֹּל חוֹזֵר לְלָבָן), and the other colors are no longer seen (וְאֵינָם נִרְאִים עוֹד שְׁאָר הַגְּוָנִים), as mentioned there in the Idra Rabba (כַּנִּזְכָּר שָׁם בָּאִדְּרָא רַבָּא). And this is its language (וְזֶה לְשׁוֹנוֹ): “And when the whiteness is revealed and the eye is washed” (וְכַד אִתְגַּלֵּי חִוָּורָא וְאִסְתַּחִי עֵינָא), “all those colors become quieted and sink below” (כָּל אִינוּן גַּוְונִין מִשְׁתַּכְּכִין וּמִשְׁתַּקְּעִין לְתַתָּאָה), “red, green, and black are not seen” (סוּמָקָא יְרוֹקָא אוּכָּמָא לָא אִתְחֲזֵי), “except that whiteness alone which shines” (בַּר הַהוּא חִוָּורָא דְּנָהִיר), “which shines from Atik Yomin” (דְּנָהִיר מֵעַתִּיק יוֹמִין), “and no color is seen there except that whiteness alone” (וְלֵית גַּוְונָא אִתְחֲזֵי בַּר הַהוּא חִוָּורָא בִּלְחוֹדוֹי), “and because of this all the masters of red and black departed” (וּבְגִין כָּךְ אִסְתַּלְּקוּ כָּל מָארֵיהוֹן דְּסוּמָקָא וְאוּכָּמָא), “for they are twins” (דְּאִינוּן תְּאוֹמִים). They are neighbors and brothers (שֶׁהֵם שְׁכֵנִים וְאַחִים), and one never departs from the other (וְזֶה אֵינוֹ יוֹצֵא מִזֶּה לְעוֹלָם), for “this black is actually red, except that it has been stricken” (כִּי הַאי שָׁחוֹר אָדוֹם הוּא אֶלָּא שֶׁלָּקָה) (Sukkah 33b), and both are judgment (וּשְׁנֵיהֶם הֵם דִּין). Therefore, if both are visible (לָכֵן אִם שְׁנֵיהֶם נִרְאִים), the eye of Arich Anpin is not whitening the eyes of Ze’ir Anpin (אֵין הָעַיִן שֶׁל אֲרִיךְ אַנְפִּין מַלְבִּין עֵינֵי זְעֵיר אַנְפִּין). But if the eye of Arich supervises below (וְאִם הָעַיִן שֶׁל אֲרִיךְ מַשְׁגִּיחַ לְמַטָּה), upon the eyes of Ze’ir Anpin (בְּעֵינֵי זְעֵיר אַנְפִּין), to whiten them and sweeten them (לְלַבְּנָם וּלְהַמְתִּיקָם), then the two colors, red and black, are both no longer seen (אָז הַשְּׁתֵּי גְּוָנִים אָדוֹם וְשָׁחוֹר שְׁנֵיהֶם אֵינָם נִרְאִים). And their sign is: “You shall not kindle a fire in all your dwellings on the day of Shabbat” (וְסִימָנָם לֹא תְבַעֲרוּ אֵ״שׁ בְּכָל מוֹשְׁבֹתֵיכֶם בְּיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת) (Exodus 35:3), for this refers to red and black (שֶׁהוּא אָדוֹם וְשָׁחוֹר). Therefore one should be careful not to wear the two colors together upon his body on the day of Shabbat (לָכֵן יֵשׁ לִזָּהֵר שֶׁלֹּא לִלְבֹּשׁ שְׁנֵי הַגְּוָנִים בְּיַחַד עַל גּוּפוֹ בְּיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת), so as not to arouse the Attribute of Judgment of the eyes of Ze’ir (שֶׁלֹּא לְהִתְעוֹרֵר מִדַּת הַדִּין שֶׁל עֵינֵי זְעֵיר), but rather to intend to wear white garments (אֶלָּא לְכַוֵּן לִלְבֹּשׁ לְבָנִים). To wash away its redness and its blackness (לִרְחֹץ אַדְמִימוּתוֹ וְשַׁחֲרוּרוּתוֹ), from this eye of Atika which is called (מֵעֵינָא דְּעַתִּיקָא זֶה הַנִּקְרָא): “the Open Eye that does not sleep and constantly guards” (עֵינָא פְקִיחָא דְּלָא נָאִים וְנָטִיר תְּדִירָא) (Zohar Shemot, Sifra DiTzniuta 176b). And this is the meaning of: “And because of this all the masters of judgment of red and black departed, for they are twins together” (וְזֶהוּ אוֹמְרוֹ וּבְגִין כָּךְ אִסְתַּלְּקוּ כָּל מָארֵיהוֹן דְּדִינָא דְּסוּמָקָא וְאוּכָּמָא דְּאִינוּן תְּאוֹמִים כַּחֲדָא), this is as it is written: “that came up from the washing” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב שֶׁעָלוּ מִן הָרַחְצָה), from that washing of the holy supernal Good Eye (מֵהַהוּא אִסְתַּחוּתָא דְּעֵינָא טָבָא קַדִּישָׁא עִלָּאָה), “all of them are twins, mingled one with another” (שֶׁכֻּלָּם מַתְאִימוֹת מִתְעַרְבָן דָּא בְּדָא). And concerning what it says: “Your teeth are like a flock of shorn sheep” (וּמַה דְּאָמַר שִׁנַּיִךְ דָּא לְדָא כְּעֵדֶר הַקְּצוּבוֹת) (Song of Songs 4:2), and everything that is fixed by number and count is separated, each one from its fellow (וְכָל דָּבָר הַקָּצוּב בְּמִסְפָּר וּמִנְיָן הוּא נִפְרָד אִישׁ מֵעַל רֵעֵהוּ), yet you say: “all of them are twins” (וְאַתְּ אָמַרְתְּ שֶׁכֻּלָּם מַתְאִימוֹת), a term of twins (לְשׁוֹן תְּאוֹמִים), meaning (כְּלוֹמַר), all of them are complete, and good to protect Israel (כֻּלָּם שְׁלֵמוֹת וְטוֹב לְהָגֵן עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל), each color by itself (כָּל גָּוֶן בִּפְנֵי עַצְמוֹ), as we explained above (כִּדְפֵירַשְׁנוּ לְמַעְלָה). And this is the meaning of: “their whiteness is like that whiteness of the eyes when they are washed in the whiteness of the Supernal Eye” (וְזֶהוּ אוֹמְרוֹ כְּלוֹמַר חִוָּורָא דִלְהוֹן כְּהַהוּא חִוָּורָא דְּעֵינִין כַּד אִסְתַּחִין בְּחִוָּורְתָּא דְּעֵינָא עִלָּאָה), “and the righteous are destined to know this, to behold through the spirit of wisdom” (וְדָא זְמִינִין לְמִנְדַּע צַדִּיקַיָּא לְמֶחֱזֵי בְּרוּחָא דְחָכְמְתָא), which light from the eyes of Ze’ir kills the enemies of Israel (אֵיזֶה אוֹר מֵעֵינֵי זְעֵיר מֵמִית אֶת שׂוֹנְאֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל), and which light gives life (וְאֵיזֶה אוֹר מְחַיֶּה), and they shall have knowledge (וְיִהְיֶה לָהֶם יְדִיעָה), to perform awesome actions (לִפְעוֹל פְּעֻלּוֹת נוֹרָאוֹת), and to bring down the light of Atika upon them (וּלְהוֹרִיד אוֹר עַתִּיקָא עֲלֵיהֶם), to protect Israel and punish their enemies (לְהָגֵן עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְלַעֲנוֹשׁ אֶת שׂוֹנְאֵיהֶם). As it is said: “For eye to eye they shall see” (כְּמָא דְאַתְּ אָמַר כִּי עַיִן בְּעַיִן יִרְאוּ) (Isaiah 52:8), when? “When Hashem returns to Zion” (אֵימָתַי בְּשׁוּב י״י צִיּוֹן) (Isaiah 52:8), and it is written: “For You, Hashem, are seen eye to eye” (וּכְתִיב אֲשֶׁר עַיִן בְּעַיִן נִרְאָה אַתָּה י״י) (Numbers 14:14), and then the opening of the eyes will be for good upon Israel (וּכְדֵין פְּקִיחוּתָא דְעֵינִין לְטַב עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל), and the opening of the eyes for evil upon their enemies (וּפְקִיחוּתָא דְעֵינִין לְבִישׁ עַל שׂוֹנְאֵיהֶם). “For good,” as it is written: “Open Your eyes and behold our desolations and the city upon which Your Name is called” (לְטַב כְּמָה דִכְתִיב פְּקַח עֵינֶיךָ וּרְאֵה אֶת שֹׁמְמוֹתֵינוּ וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶיהָ) (Daniel 9:18), here it is for good (הָכָא לְטַב), “and for evil,” as it is written: “Your eyes shall behold Jerusalem, a tranquil habitation, a tent that shall not be removed, whose stakes shall never be uprooted” (וּלְבִישׁ דִּכְתִיב עֵינֶיךָ תִּרְאֶנָה יְרוּשָׁלַיִם נָוֶה שַׁאֲנָן אֹהֶל בַּל יִצְעָן בַּל יִסַּע יְתֵדֹתָיו לָנֶצַח) (Isaiah 33:20), behold here are good and evil (הָא הָכָא לְטַב וּלְבִישׁ), “for one is not done without the other” (דְּלָא אִתְעֲבִיד דָּא בְּלָא דָּא). For the eyes are mercy and judgment (כִּי הָעֵינַיִם הֵם רַחֲמֵי וְדִינָא), the right eye is mercy (הָעַיִן הַיָּמִין הוּא רַחֲמִים), and the left eye is judgment (וְהָעַיִן הַשְּׂמָאלִי הוּא דִּין), to execute vengeance upon the enemies of Hashem (לִנְקוֹם בּוֹ נְקָמוֹת בְּאוֹיְבֵי י״י), and Jerusalem is the Nukvah of Ze’ir Anpin (וִירוּשָׁלַיִם הִיא נוּקְבֵיהּ דְז״א), she shall go forth from exile (הִיא תֵּצֵא מִן הַגָּלוּת), and Hashem shall cut off from her every hold of the Klipot (וְיַכְרִית י״י מִמֶּנָּה כָּל אֲחִיזַת הַקְּלִיפּוֹת), as it is said: “To grasp the corners of the earth, and the wicked shall be shaken out of it” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר לֶאֱחֹז בְּכַנְפוֹת הָאָרֶץ וְיִנָּעֲרוּ רְשָׁעִים מִמֶּנָּה) (Job 38:13; Zohar Shemot 32a). And then, since “Your eyes shall behold Jerusalem” (וְאָז כֵּיוָן שֶׁעֵינֶיךָ תִּרְאֶנָה יְרוּשָׁלַיִם) (Isaiah 33:20), to whiten her judgments (לְהַלְבִּין דִּינֶיהָ), certainly she shall be “a tent that shall not be removed, whose stakes shall never be uprooted” (בְּוַדַּאי תִּהְיֶה אֹהֶל בַּל יִצְעָן בַּל יִסַּע יְתֵדֹתָיו לָנֶצַח) (Isaiah 33:20). And then also the eye of Atika shall supervise the eyes of Ze’ir (וְאָז גַּם עֵינָא דְּעַתִּיקָא יַשְׁגִּיחַ בְּעֵינֵי זְעֵיר), and especially upon its left eye (וּבִפְרָט בְּעֵין שְׂמֹאל דִילֵיהּ), to sweeten it (לְהַמְתִּיקוֹ), in the secret of: “Eye to eye You are seen, Hashem” (בְּסוֹד עַיִן בְּעַיִן נִרְאֶה אַתָּה י״י) (Numbers 14:14), for this is Ze’ir Anpin (שֶׁהוּא זְעֵיר אַנְפִּין), the Name Havayah in every place (סְתָם שֵׁם הֲוָיָה בְּכָל מָקוֹם), and You are seen through the Eye which is the Open Eye (וְאַתָּה נִרְאֶה מֵעַיִן שֶׁהוּא עֵינָא פְקִיחָא). And in Sifra DiTzniuta it was taught in the Idra Rabba (וּבְסִפְרָא דִצְנִיעוּתָא תָּנָא [בָּאִדְּרָא רַבָּא]): “What is the meaning of ‘Your eyes shall behold Jerusalem, a tranquil habitation’?” (מַהוּ עֵינֶיךָ תִּרְאֶנָה יְרוּשָׁלַיִם נָוֶה שַׁאֲנָן), “Is Jerusalem a tranquil habitation?” (וְכִי יְרוּשָׁלַיִם נָוֶה שַׁאֲנָן הוּא), for Jerusalem is the Nukvah (וַהֲלֹא יְרוּשָׁלַיִם הִיא נוּקְבֵיהּ), and all the arousal of the warfare of judgments is in her hand (וְכָל הִתְעוֹרְרוּת הַמִּלְחָמָה שֶׁל הַדִּינִים הֵם בְּיָדָהּ), and she is not tranquil and quiet (וְאֵינוֹ שַׁאֲנָן וְשָׁקֵט), for judgments are never tranquil and at rest (כִּי הַדִּינִים אֵינָם שׁוֹקְטִים וְנָחִים לְעוֹלָם), except when they are weakened and sweetened by the Chasadim (אֶלָּא בִּזְמַן שֶׁנֶּחְלָשִׁים וּמִתְמַתְּקִים מִן הַחֲסָדִים), then they are compelled to be quiet (מוּכְרָחִים הֵם לִשְׁקֹט). “And is it not written: ‘Righteousness lodges in her’” (וְהָא כְּתִיב צֶדֶק יָלִין בָּהּ) (Isaiah 1:21), and the Nukvah is called righteous judgment (וְנוּקְבֵיהּ נִקְרָא דִּין צֶדֶק), in the secret of: “Righteousness and judgment are the foundation of Your throne” (בְּסוֹד צֶדֶק וּמִשְׁפָּט מְכוֹן כִּסְאֶךָ) (Psalms 89:15), which are Ze’ir and its Nukvah (שֶׁהֵם זְעֵיר וְנוּקְבֵיהּ), “and in a place where righteousness is found, there is neither tranquility nor quiet” (וּבַאֲתַר דְּאִשְׁתְּכַח צֶדֶק לָאו שָׁקִיט וְשַׁאֲנָן הוּא). “Rather, ‘Your eyes shall behold Jerusalem, a tranquil habitation’ refers to Atik Yomin [Ancient of Days]” (אֶלָּא עֵינֶיךָ תִּרְאֶנָה יְרוּשָׁלַיִם נָוֶה שַׁאֲנָן לְעַתִּיק יוֹמִין), “who supervises these eyes” (דְּיִשְׁגַּח בְּאִלֵּין עֵינִין), “for He is the tranquil and quiet Eye” (דְּהוּא עֵינָא שָׁקִיט וְשַׁאֲנָן), “the Eye of mercy” (עֵינָא דְּרַחֲמֵי), “the Eye that does not move from this supervision to another supervision” (עֵינָא דְּלָא נָטִיל מֵאַשְׁגָּחוּתָא דָא לְאַשְׁגָּחוּתָא אָחֳרָא). “And because of this it is written ‘Your eye shall behold’ with the Yud missing” (וּבְגִין כָּךְ כְּתִיב עֵינֶיךָ תִּרְאֶנָה עֵינְךָ חָסֵר יוּ״ד כְּתִיב), for it implies the secret of the one Eye of Atika (שֶׁמַּשְׁמַע סוֹד עַיִן אֶחָד דְּעַתִּיקָא), whereas in Ze’ir there are two eyes (וּבִזְעֵיר הֵם שְׁתֵּי עֵינִים). Rather, you shall behold the Eye Above (אֶלָּא אַתָּה תִּרְאֶה לָעַיִן שֶׁלְּמַעְלָה), which will supervise you with mercy (שֶׁיַּשְׁגִּיחַ עָלֶיךָ לְרַחֲמְךָ), and wash them from the redness and the blackness (וּלְרָחְצָם מִן הָאוֹדֶם וְהַשַּׁחֲרוּת). And concerning what it says, “Jerusalem” and not “Zion” (וּמַה דְּאָמַר יְרוּשָׁלַיִם וְלֹא צִיּוֹן), for this is the Yesod of Imma which is called Zion (שֶׁהוּא יְסוֹד אִמָּא הַנִּקְרֵאת צִיּוֹן), whose numerical value is Yosef HaTzaddik, clothed in the Yesod of Ze’ir (בְּגִימַטְרִיָּא יוֹסֵף הַצַּדִּיק הַמְלוּבָּשׁ בִּיסוֹד זְעֵיר), “thus it is necessary to subdue the judgment found within her and to have mercy upon her” (הָכִי אִצְטְרִיךְ לְאַכְפְּיָיא לְדִינָא דְּאִשְׁתְּכַח בָּהּ וּלְרַחֲמָא עֲלָהּ). “We learned: It is written, ‘The eyes of Hashem your God are upon it, from the beginning of the year until the end of the year’” (תָּאנָא כְּתִיב עֵינֵי י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ בָּהּ מֵרֵאשִׁית הַשָּׁנָה וְעַד אַחֲרִית שָׁנָה) (Deuteronomy 11:12), this is what is written: “Righteousness lodges in her” (הַיְינוּ דִּכְתִיב צֶדֶק יָלִין בָּהּ) (Isaiah 1:21), for within her they are found more than in all other places (דְּבָהּ אִשְׁתְּכְחוּ יַתִּיר מִכָּל שְׁאָר אַתְרֵי), therefore it says “the eyes” (לָכֵן אוֹמֵר עֵינֵי), of Ze’ir (דִּזְעֵיר), for they are judgment (שֶׁהֵם דִּין), also “the eyes of Hashem your God” (גַּם כֵּן עֵינֵי י״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ), specifically two eyes (דַּיְיקָא שְׁתֵּי עֵינִים). “And in the time to come there shall be found one Eye of mercy” (וּלְזִמְנָא דְּאָתֵי יִשְׁתְּכַח עֵינָא חַד דְּרַחֲמֵי), “the Eye of Atika DeAtikin [the Ancient of Ancients]” (עֵינָא דְּעַתִּיקָא דְּעַתִּיקִין), this is as it is written: “And with great mercies I shall gather you” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב וּבְרַחֲמִים גְּדֹלִים אֲקַבְּצֵךְ) (Isaiah 54:7). Since it says mercies, what is meant by “great” (כֵּיוָן דְּאָמַר רַחֲמִים מַהוּ גְדוֹלִים)? And he answers (וְתֵירֵץ), certainly there is a difference (בְּוַדַּאי יֵשׁ הֶפְרֵשׁ): “There are mercies and there are mercies” (אִית רַחֲמֵי וְאִית רַחֲמֵי), “the mercies of Atika DeAtikin are called great mercies” (רַחֲמֵי דְּעַתִּיקָא דְּעַתִּיקִין אִינוּן אִקְרוּן רַחֲמִים גְּדוֹלִים), “the mercies of Ze’ir Anpin are called mercies without qualification” (רַחֲמֵי דְּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין אִקְרוּן רַחֲמִים סְתָם), because there is within it right and left, judgment and mercy (מִשּׁוּם דְּאִית בֵּיהּ יְמִינָא וּשְׂמָאלָא דִּינָא וְרַחֲמֵי), and therefore: “with great mercies I shall gather you” refers to Atik Yomin [Ancient of Days] (וּבְגִין כָּךְ בְּרַחֲמִים גְּדוֹלִים אֲקַבְּצֵךְ דְּעַתִּיק יוֹמִין). “We learned: In these eyes, from two of their colors, namely red and black” (תָּאנָא בְּהָנֵי עֵינִין בִּתְרֵין גַּוְונִין מִנַּיְיהוּ בְּסוּמָקָא וְאוּכָּמָא), “there abide two tears” (שָׁרָאן תְּרֵין דִּמְעִין), and the tears are salty (שֶׁהַדְּמָעוֹת הֵם מְלוּחִין), and they are the secret of judgment (וְהֵם סוֹד הַדִּין), “and when the Holy One Blessed Be He desires to have mercy upon Israel, He brings down two tears to be sweetened in the Great Sea” (וְכַד בָּעֵי הקב״ה לְרַחֲמָא עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל אַחִית תְּרֵין דִּמְעִין לְאִתְבַּסָּמָא בְּיַמָּא רַבָּא). “Who is the Great Sea?” (מָאן יַמָּא רַבָּא), “the Sea of Supernal Chokhmah” (יַמָּא דְּחָכְמְתָא עִלָּאָה), as it is said: “And the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר וּמָלְאָה הָאָרֶץ דֵּעָה אֶת י״י כַּמַּיִם לַיָּם מְכַסִּים) (Isaiah 11:9), and this alludes to the Sea of Chokhmah of Reisha DeEin [Head of Nothingness] (וְהוּא רוֹמֵז עַל יַם הַחָכְמָה שֶׁל רֵישָׁא דְּאֵין), which is in Atika (אֲשֶׁר הוּא בְּעַתִּיקָא), meaning (כְּלוֹמַר), “that they should be washed in the river, in the spring that emerges from the Great Chokhmah, and He has mercy upon Israel” (דְּיִתְסַחוּן בְּנַהֲרָא בְּמַבּוּעָא דְּנָפִיק מֵחָכְמְתָא רַבָּא וּמְרַחֵם לְהוּ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל) (until here the discourse, Idra Rabba, Bamidbar 137b) (עַד כָּאן הַמַּאֲמָר אִדְּרָא רַבָּא בַּמִּדְבָּר קל״ז־ב).
And in the Idra Zuta (וּבָאִדְּרָא זוּטָא) (Zohar Devarim 293b), it speaks of the secret of these eyes (אוֹמֵר מִסּוֹד הָעֵינַיִם הַלָּלוּ), and this is its language (וְזֶה לְשׁוֹנוֹ): “The eyes of the Head” (עֵינִין דְּרֵישָׁא), “are eyes from which the wicked are not hidden” (אִינוּן עֵינִין דְּלָא מִסְתַּמְרִין מִינַּיְיהוּ חַיָּיבַיָּא), “eyes that sleep and do not sleep” (עֵינִין דְּנָיְימִין וְלָא נָיְימִין), meaning (רָצָה לוֹמַר), at the time when Israel does the will of the Omnipresent (בִּזְמַן שֶׁיִּשְׂרָאֵל עוֹשִׂים רְצוֹנוֹ שֶׁל מָקוֹם), the Open Eye supervises and whitens them (מַשְׁגַּח עֵינָא פְקִיחָא וּמַלְבִּין אוֹתָם), and it opens its eyes to receive the Supernal Light (וְהוּא פּוֹתֵחַ עֵינָיו לְקַבֵּל אוֹר הָעֶלְיוֹן), the Eye of Atika (עֵין עַתִּיקָא), as it is said: “Open Your eyes and behold our desolations” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר פְּקַח עֵינֶיךָ וּרְאֵה אֶת שֹׁמְמוֹתֵינוּ) (Daniel 9:18). And at the time when Israel does not do the will of the Omnipresent, Heaven forbid (וּבִזְמַן שֶׁיִּשְׂרָאֵל אֵינָם עוֹשִׂים רְצוֹנוֹ שֶׁל מָקוֹם חַס וְשָׁלוֹם), they cause sleep (גּוֹרְמִים שֵׁנָה), and the Mochin depart because of our many sins (וְהַמּוֹחִין מִסְתַּלְּקִים בַּעֲוֹנוֹתֵינוּ הָרַבִּים), and then it is said: “Awake, why do You sleep?... Arise, do not cast us off forever” (וְאָז נֶאֱמַר עוּרָה לָמָּה תִישַׁן... הָקִיצָה אַל תִּזְנַח לָנֶצַח) (Psalms 44:24). Therefore it says: “eyes that sleep and do not sleep” (לָכֵן אוֹמֵר עֵינִין דְּנָיְימִין וְלָא נָיְימִין), just as our Sages of blessed memory said: “At times they are silent, at times they speak” (כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמְרוּ רַז״ל עִתִּים חָשׁוֹת עִתִּים מְמַלְּלוֹת) (Chagigah 13b), so too is the matter here (כֵּן הָעִנְיָן כָּאן). “And because of this they are called ‘His eyes are like doves’” (וּבְגִין כָּךְ אִקְרוּ עֵינָיו כְּיוֹנִים), in Shir HaShirim [Song of Songs] (בְּשִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים), as it is said: “His eyes are like doves beside streams of water” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר עֵינָיו כְּיוֹנִים עַל אֲפִיקֵי מָיִם) (Song of Songs 5:12). “What is ‘doves’?” (מַאי יוֹנִים), “as you say: ‘You shall not wrong one another’” (כְּמָא דְּאַתְּ אָמַר לֹא תוֹנוּ אִישׁ אֶת עֲמִיתוֹ) (Leviticus 25:17), for the deceiver deceives his fellow (שֶׁהָרַמַּאי עוֹשֶׂה רְמָאוּת לַחֲבֵרוֹ), he blinds his eyes (הוּא מְסַמֵּא אֶת עֵינָיו), until he does not see the deception (עַד שֶׁאֵינוֹ רוֹאֶה אֶת הָרְמָאוּת), and does not understand how to guard himself from that deceiver (וְאֵינוֹ מֵבִין לִשְׁמוֹר עַצְמוֹ מֵהָרַמַּאי הַזֶּה). For had he been able to guard himself from the deception, he could not have been deceived (שֶׁאִלְמָלֵא הָיָה יָכוֹל לִשְׁמוֹר עַצְמוֹ מִן הָרְמָאוּת לֹא הָיָה יָכוֹל לְרַמּוֹת אוֹתוֹ), and certainly there is a blinding of the eyes in the matter (וּבְוַדַּאי סִמּוּי עֵינַיִם יֵשׁ בַּדָּבָר), therefore the Zohar says in the Idra Zuta (לָכֵן אוֹמֵר הַזֹּהַר בָּאִדְּרָא זוּטָא): “Eyes that sleep and do not sleep, and because of this they are called ‘His eyes are like doves,’ as you say: ‘You shall not wrong one another’” (עֵינִין דְּנָיְימִין וְלָא נָיְימִין וּבְגִין כָּךְ אִקְרוּ עֵינָיו כְּיוֹנִים, כְּמָא דְּאַתְּ אָמַר לֹא תוֹנוּ אִישׁ אֶת עֲמִיתוֹ). And concerning this it is written (וְעַל דָּא כְּתִיב): “And they say: Hashem does not see, nor does the God of Yaakov understand” (וַיֹּאמְרוּ לֹא יִרְאֶה יָהּ וְלֹא יָבִין אֱלֹהֵי יַעֲקֹב) (Psalms 94:7), for the wicked are judged measure for measure (שֶׁנִּידּוֹנִים הָרְשָׁעִים מִדָּה כְּנֶגֶד מִדָּה), “for the guilty are not concealed from them” (דְּלָא מִתְטַמְּרִין מִנַּיְיהוּ חַיָּיבַיָּא), woe to them (אוֹי לָהֶם), for they remove the Supernal Eye of the Open Eye (שֶׁהֵם מְסַלְּקִים הָעַיִן הָעֶלְיוֹן שֶׁל עֵינָא פְקִיחָא), and there is no greater blinding of the eyes than this (וְאֵין לְךָ סִמּוּי עֵינַיִם גָּדוֹל מִזֶּה). And it is written: “He who planted the ear, shall He not hear? He who formed the eye, shall He not see?” (וּכְתִיב הֲנֹטַע אֹזֶן הֲלֹא יִשְׁמָע אִם יֹצֵר עַיִן הֲלֹא יַבִּיט) (Psalms 94:9), from which it follows that there are times when He does not see, כביכול (מִכְּלָל שֶׁיֵּשׁ עִתִּים שֶׁאֵינוֹ מַבִּיט כִּבְיָכוֹל), during the sleep of exile (בְּעֵת שֵׁנַת הַגָּלוּת), until the illumination of the Open Eye shines upon Him and awakens Him from His sleep (עַד שֶׁמֵּאִיר עָלָיו הֶאָרַת עֵינָא פְקִיחָא וּמְעִירוֹ מִשְּׁנָתוֹ), as it is said: “On that night the sleep of the king fled” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר בַּלַּיְלָה הַהוּא נָדְדָה שְׁנַת הַמֶּלֶךְ) (Esther 6:1), and our Sages of blessed memory said: “The sleep of the King of the universe” (וְאָמְרוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ ז״ל שְׁנַת מַלְכּוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם) (Megillah 15b). Fortunate is the one who merits the supervision of the eye of the Open Eye of Atika Kadisha [the Holy Ancient One] (אַשְׁרֵי מִי שֶׁזוֹכֶה לְהַשְׁגָּחַת הָעַיִן שֶׁל עֵינָא פְקִיחָא דְּעַתִּיקָא קַדִּישָׁא), as it is said: “A good eye shall bless” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר טוֹב עַיִן הוּא יְבָרֵךְ) (Proverbs 22:9), like Yosef, who merited the gaze and supervision of the light of this Open Eye (כְּמוֹ יוֹסֵף שֶׁזָּכָה לְהַבָּטַת וְהַשְׁגָּחַת אוֹר עֵינָא פְקִיחָא הַזֶּה), by virtue of not gazing upon sin (בִּזְכוּת שֶׁלֹּא הִבִּיט בַּעֲבֵרָה), as it is said: “A fruitful son is Yosef, a fruitful son above the eye” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר בֵּן פֹּרָת יוֹסֵף בֵּן פֹּרָת עֲלֵי עָיִן) (Genesis 49:22; Zohar Bamidbar 130a). And our Sages said: “Do not read ‘above the eye,’ but rather ‘those who rise above the eye’” (וְאָמְרוּ חֲזָ״ל אַל תִּקְרֵי עֲלֵי עָיִן אֶלָּא עוֹלֵי עָיִן) (Berakhot 20a), meaning (רוֹצֶה לוֹמַר), that he ascended above the eye of Ze’ir (שֶׁנִּתְעַלָּה עַל עַיִן שֶׁל זְעֵיר), to the eye of Arich (לְעַיִן שֶׁל אֲרִיךְ), which are two and yet are one aspect (שֶׁהֵם שְׁנַיִם וְהֵם בְּחִינָה אַחַת), the first is mercy (הָאֶחָד רַחֲמֵי), and the second is mercy within mercy (וְהַשֵּׁנִית רַחֲמֵי גּוֹ רַחֲמֵי). And this is the meaning of “above the eye” (וְזֶהוּ שֶׁאָמַר עֲלֵי עָיִן), meaning above the eye of Ze’ir (רוֹצֶה לוֹמַר עַל עַיִן שֶׁל זְעֵיר), but the eye of Ze’ir Anpin contains a right side and a left side (אֲבָל עֵינָא דְזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין אִית בֵּיהּ יְמִינָא וּשְׂמָאלָא), whereas the Open Eye that does not sleep and constantly guards (אֲבָל עֵינָא פְקִיחָא דְּלָא נָאִים וְנָטִיר תְּדִירָא), concerning which it is written: “Behold, the eye of Hashem is toward those who fear Him, those who await His kindness” (דִּכְתִיב בֵּיהּ הִנֵּה עֵין יְהוָה אֶל יְרֵאָיו לַמְיַחֲלִים לְחַסְדּוֹ) (Psalms 33:18; Zohar Bamidbar 129b). And the allusion for the wise is (וְהָרֶמֶז לַחֲכִימֵי עַיִן הוּא), five times Havayah (ה׳ פְּעָמִים יְהוָ״ה), five corresponding to five (חָמֵשׁ כְּנֶגֶד חָמֵשׁ), equals two times Ayin [eye] (עוֹלֶה ב׳ פְּעָמִים עַיִן). Fortunate is the one who merits His supervision (אַשְׁרֵי לְמִי הַזּוֹכֶה לְהַשְׁגָּחָתוֹ), certainly he shall be blessed from the Good Eye (בְּוַדַּאי הוּא יִתְבָּרַךְ מִטּוֹב עַיִן), as it is said: “A good eye shall bless” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר טוֹב עַיִן הוּא יְבָרֵךְ) (Proverbs 22:9), “do not read ‘shall be blessed,’ but rather ‘shall bless’” (אַל תִּקְרֵי יְבֹרָךְ אֶלָּא יְבָרֵךְ) (Sotah 38b). And may Hashem, the Good Eye, bless me (וַי״י טוֹב עַיִן הוּא יְבָרֵךְ אוֹתִי), and strengthen me and give me courage (וִיחַזְּקֵנִי וִיאַמְּצֵנִי), to magnify Torah and glorify it in my heart (לְהַגְדִּיל תּוֹרָה וּלְהַאֲדִירָהּ בְּלִבִּי), and in the heart of all who take refuge in my shadow (וּבְלֵב כָּל הַחוֹסִים בְּצִלִּי). And may I merit to complete the compositions that I have begun (וְאֶזְכֶּה לְסַיֵּם הַחִבּוּרִים שֶׁהִתְחַלְתִּי), to illuminate before the Holy One Blessed Be He and His Shekhinah forever (לְהָאִיר לִפְנֵי הקב״ה וּשְׁכִינְתֵּיהּ עַד עוֹלָם), and may Hashem command with us the blessing (וִיצַו ה׳ אִתָּנוּ אֶת הַבְּרָכָה), life forevermore (חַיִּים עַד הָעוֹלָם) (Psalms 133:3). Blessed is Hashem forever, Amen and Amen (יִתְבָּרַךְ י״י לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן).
