Chapter Twenty-Six (פֶּרֶק עֶשְׂרִים וְשִׁשָּׁה)

The first action is (הַפְּעוּלָּה הָרִאשׁוֹנָה הִיא): that which is called the division of the hairs, as we have said (שֶׁנִּקְרֵאת פַּלְגוּתָא דְשַׂעֲרֵי שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ), and it is made from the secret of Arich itself (נַעֲשֵׂית מִסּוֹד אֲרִיךְ מַמָּשׁ), within whom there are four hundred worlds of longing (אֲשֶׁר יֵשׁ בּוֹ אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת עָלְמִין דְּכִסּוּפִין). The explanation is (פֵּרוּשׁ): “My soul longs, yea, even faints for the courts of Hashem” (נִכְסְפָה וְגַם כָּלְתָה נַפְשִׁי לְחַצְרוֹת יְהוָה) (Psalms 84:3), and it is an expression of hidden longing (וְהוּא לְשׁוֹן חֶמְדָּה גְּנוּזָה), and it is said (וְנֶאֱמַר): “Surely you longed greatly for your father's house” (נִכְסֹף נִכְסַפְתָּ לְבֵית אָבִיךָ) (Genesis 31:30). And the secret of these four hundred worlds is (וְסוֹד אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת עָלְמִין אֵלֶּה הוּא), that in Arich there is the Name Havayah in the Milui Yodin [Yod-expansion] (כִּי בַּאֲרִיךְ יֵשׁ שֵׁם הֲוָיָ״ה בְּמִלּוּי יוּדִי״ן), and these four Yodin are included in ten (וְד׳ יוּדִי״ן אֵלּוּ כְּלוּלִים מֵעֶשֶׂר), and ten from ten are “four hundred shekels of silver, current with the merchant” (וְעֶשֶׂר מֵעֶשֶׂר הֵם אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת שֶׁקֶל כֶּסֶף עֹבֵר לַסֹּחֵר) (Genesis 23:16). This merchant is the Tzaddik [Righteous One] (הוּא הַצַּדִּיק), who returns to ascend from Heichal [Palace] to Heichal [Palace] (הַמַּחֲזִיר לַעֲלוֹת מֵהֵיכָל אֶל הֵיכָל), like this merchant who travels with his merchandise from city to city (כַּסּוֹחֵר הַזֶּה הַמַּחֲזִיר עִם הַסְּחוֹרוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ מֵעִיר לְעִיר), so too this Tzaddik [Righteous One] through his good deeds (כָּךְ הַצַּדִּיק הַזֶּה עַל יְדֵי הַמַּעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים שֶׁלּוֹ). And Kesef [silver] is an expression of Kisufin [longings] (וְכֶסֶף הוּא לְשׁוֹן דְּכִסּוּפִין), and the Name Havayah of Yodin (וְשֵׁם הֲוָיָה דְּיוּדִי״ן), rectified the four thousand myriad letters (תִּקֵּן הָאַרְבַּע אֲלָפִים רִבּוֹא אוֹתִיּוֹת), which entered into all the vessels of Binah (שֶׁנִּכְנְסוּ אֶל כָּל כֵּלֶיהָ שֶׁל הַבִּינָה), and afterward Arich Anpin was formed, as is known (וְאַחַר כָּךְ נַעֲשָׂה אֲרִיךְ אַנְפִּין כַּנּוֹדָע), for the split Binah became Arich (שֶׁבִּינָה הַסְּדוּקָה נַעֲשָׂה מִמֶּנָּה אֲרִיךְ). Thus she attained for each one of her Sefirot four hundred myriads (נִמְצָא שֶׁהִשִּׂיגָה לְכָל אֶחָד מִסְּפִירוֹתֶיהָ אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת רִבּוֹא), and these four hundred myriads illuminate within the vessel of Arich (וְאֵלּוּ הָאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת רִבּוֹא, הֵם מְאִירִים בְּתוֹךְ כְּלִי אֲרִיךְ). And afterward the aforementioned light emerges through the Tabur [navel] of Arich (וְאַחַר כָּךְ יוֹצֵא הָאוֹר הַנִּזְכָּר דֶּרֶךְ טַבּוּרוֹ שֶׁל אֲרִיךְ), and illuminates in the division of the hairs of the head of Ze’ir Anpin (וּמֵאִיר בְּפַלְגוּתָא דְּשַׂעֲרֵי דְּרֵישָׁא דְּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין), namely from the Metzach [forehead] until the Kadkod [crown of the head] (דְּהַיְינוּ מִן הַמֵּצַח עַד הַקָּדְקֹד), namely through the middle of the head (דְּהַיְינוּ דֶּרֶךְ אֶמְצָעִיּוּת הָרֹאשׁ), where the hairs divide, half to the right and half to the left (שֶׁשָּׁם מִתְחַלְּקִים הַשְּׂעָרוֹת חֶצְיָם לְיָמִין וְחֶצְיָם לִשְׂמֹאל). Because the hairs are Dinim [judgments] (מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהַשְּׂעָרוֹת הֵם דִּינִים), and through this illumination they are sweetened (וּבְהַהֶאָרָה הַזֹּאת הֵם מְמוּתָּקִים), therefore they divide into two so that the Dinim [judgments] should not be together (וְעַל כֵּן הֵם מִתְחַלְּקִים לִשְׁנַיִם כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יִהְיוּ הַדִּינִים יַחַד), and these four hundred myriad letters are the four hundred worlds of Kisufin [longings] that we mentioned (וְאֵלּוּ הָאַרְבַּעָה מֵאוֹת רִבּוֹא אוֹתִיּוֹת הֵם ד׳ מֵאוֹת עָלְמִין דְּכִסּוּפִין שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ), which illuminate in the division of the hairs of Ze’ir Anpin (שֶׁהֵם מְאִירִים בְּפַלְגוּתָא דְּשַׂעֲרֵי דְּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין). And the hairs are five Havayot of the five Havayot of Gevurot [strengths] (וְהַשְּׂעָרוֹת הֵם חֲמִשָּׁה הֲוָיוֹת שֶׁל חֲמֵשׁ הֲוָיוֹת גְּבוּרוֹת), which are with the vocalization of Elohim thus: YHVH (שֶׁהֵם בְּנִקּוּד אֱלֹהִי״ם כָּזֶה יְהֶוֺהִ), whose letters together with the vowel points equal in numerical value Talmud (שֶׁאוֹתִיּוֹתֵיהֶם עִם הַנְּקֻדּוֹת עוֹלִים כְּמִנְיַן תַּלְמוּד), which is entirely Dinim [judgments] and dispute that exists in Dinim [judgments] (שֶׁכֻּלּוֹ דִּינִים וּמַחֲלֹקֶת שֶׁיֵּשׁ בְּדִינִים), such as forbidden and permitted, impure and pure, valid and invalid (כְּגוֹן אֲסוּרֵי מוּתָּר טָמֵא טָהוֹר כָּשֵׁר פָּסוּל), to distinguish between the impure and the pure, and between the holy and the profane (לְהַבְדִּיל בֵּין הַטָּמֵא וְהַטָּהוֹר וּבֵין הַקֹּדֶשׁ וְהַחוֹל).
