Chapter One Hundred Fifty-Three (פֶּרֶק מֵאָה חֲמִשִּׁים וּשְׁלֹשָׁה)
And after I have informed you of the Name Havayah and its particulars (וְאַחַר שֶׁהוֹדַעְתִּיךָ שֵׁם הֲוָיָ״ה וּפְרָטִיּוֹתָיו), now I wish to reveal to you the Name of the Measuring Line that the Zohar mentions (עַתָּה אֲנִי רוֹצֶה לְגַלּוֹת לְךָ שֵׁם קַו הַמִּדָּה שֶׁאוֹמֵר הַזֹּהַר), because there are many opinions concerning it (לְפִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ סְבָרוֹת הַרְבֵּה), and you may choose this one (וְאַתָּה תִּבְחַר בְּזֹאת). And it is in this manner (וְהוּא בְּזֶה הָאֹפֶן): that it is entirely composed of lines (שֶׁכֻּלּוֹ קַוִּים), Yod Heh Heh Vav Vav Heh Heh (יו״ד ה״ה ו״ו ה״ה). Behold this Name before you (הִנֵּה שֵׁם זֶה לְפָנֶיךָ), which is called the Measuring Line (שֶׁנִּקְרָא קַו הַמִּדָּה), because it is entirely composed of lines (לְפִי שֶׁכֻּלּוֹ קַוִּים), namely Vavin (דְּהַיְנוּ וָוִי״ן). And now you see before you (וְהִנֵּה עַתָּה אַתָּה רוֹאֶה לְפָנֶיךָ), that in this Name there are seventeen Vavin (בְּזֶה הַשֵּׁם י״ז וָוִי״ן), whose numerical value is one hundred and two (שֶׁעוֹלִים ק״ב), and together with the four letters of the Name itself (וְעִם ד׳ אוֹתִיּוֹת הַשֵּׁם עַצְמוֹ), it equals one hundred and six (עוֹלֶה ק״ו), and this is the Measuring Line (וְהוּא קַו הַמִּדָּה). And this Name K"B together with its own Yod (וְזֶה הַשֵּׁם ק״ב עִם הַיו״ד שֶׁלּוֹ עַצְמוֹ), equals Yabok (עוֹלֶה יַבֹּק), and now the form of this Name should stand before your eyes (וְעַתָּה צוּרַת זֶה הַשֵּׁם יִהְיֶה נֶגֶד עֵינֶיךָ), for with this Name Yaakov crossed the crossing of Yabok (כִּי בְּשֵׁם זֶה עָבַר יַעֲקֹב אֶת מַעֲבַר יַבֹּק). For this Name equals Yabok (כִּי שֵׁם זֶה עוֹלֶה יַבֹּק), and likewise the Name Ehyeh, the Name Havayah, and the Name Adnut together equal Yabok (וְכֵן שֵׁם אֶהְיֶ״ה וְשֵׁם הֲוָיָ״ה וְשֵׁם אַדְנוּת עוֹלִים יַבֹּק), and likewise the Name Elohim and the Name Havayah together equal Yabok (וְגַם שֵׁם אֱלֹהִים וְשֵׁם הֲוָיָ״ה עוֹלִים יַבֹּק), and likewise YHV, fully spelled and triangulated (וְכֵן יה״ו מָלֵא מְשֻׁלָּשׁ), thus: Yod, Yod Heh Yod, Yod Heh Yod Vav (כָּזֶה יו״ד, יו״ד ה״י, יו״ד ה״י וי״ו), equals Yabok (עוֹלֶה יַבֹּק). And the meaning of the verse is (וּפֵירוּשׁ הַפָּסוּק הוּא), that Yaakov, in his intention, directed himself (שֶׁיַּעֲקֹב הָיָה בְּכַוָּנָתוֹ מְכַוֵּן), that this influx should pass to his covenant of the Holy Brit [Covenant], which is Yosef (שֶׁיַּעֲבֹר הַשֶּׁפַע הַזֶּה לִיסוֹד בְּרִית קֹדֶשׁ שֶׁלּוֹ, שֶׁהוּא יוֹסֵף), in the secret of the union between Ze’ir Anpin and its Nukvah (בְּסוֹד יִחוּד שֶׁבֵּין זְעֵיר וְנוּקְבֵיהּ), Yaakov and Rachel (יַעֲקֹב וְרָחֵל), through Yosef (עַל יְדֵי יוֹסֵף), who corresponds to the Brit [Covenant] (שֶׁהוּא נֶגֶד בְּרִית). And it is drawn from the blessing of Yaakov (וְנִמְשָׁךְ מִן בְּרָכָה שֶׁל יַעֲקֹב), who stands beneath the Yesod of Imma (שֶׁעוֹמֵד תַּחַת יְסוֹד אִמָּא), which is attached to Tevunah (הַדָּבוּק בִּתְבוּנָה), namely to the Malkhut of Tevunah, which is called Blessing (דְּהַיְנוּ בְּמַלְכוּת תְּבוּנָה הַנִּקְרֵאת בְּרָכָה), and the Supernal Pool (וּבְרֵיכָה עֶלְיוֹנָה). And all of this Yaakov was drawing from the Yesod of Abba, which is called Kedushah [Holiness] (וְכָל זֶה הָיָה יַעֲקֹב מוֹשֵׁךְ מִן יְסוֹד אַבָּא הַנִּקְרָא קְדוּשָׁה), and this is precisely the notarikon [acrostic expansion] of Yabok (וְזֶהוּ מַמָּשׁ נוֹטָרִיקוֹן שֶׁל יַבֹּק), namely Yichud [Union], Berakhah [Blessing], Kedushah [Holiness] (שֶׁהוּא י׳חוּד ב׳רָכָה ק׳דוּשָׁה). And the secret of the matter is (וְסוֹד הַדָּבָר הוּא), that all the Middot collectively are called lines (כִּי הַמִּדּוֹת כֻּלָּן בִּכְלָל נִקְרְאוּ קַוִּים), because the influx descends from one to another in the manner of a straight line (לְפִי שֶׁהַשֶּׁפַע יוֹרֵד מֵאַחַת אֶל אַחַת בְּדֶרֶךְ קַו יָשָׁר). And this Name of Havayah is present within all the Middot (וְשֵׁם הֲוָיָ״ה זֶה הוּא בְּכָל מִדּוֹת), and therefore it is called by the name Measuring Line (וְלָכֵן נִקְרָא בְּשֵׁם קַו הַמִּדָּה), for it is a line of illumination (שֶׁהוּא קַו הֶָאָרָה), which draws from its influx to all the Middot by way of a line (שֶׁהוּא מוֹשֵׁךְ מִשִּׁפְעוֹ לְכָל הַמִּדּוֹת בְּדֶרֶךְ קַו). And therefore, when we hope in Hashem and perform good deeds in accordance with that line (וְלָכֵן כְּשֶׁאָנוּ מְקַוִּים אֶל י״י וְעוֹשִׂים מַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים בְּאוֹתוֹ הַקַּו), we draw the lines from above downward (אָנוּ מוֹשְׁכִים הַקַּוִּים מִלְמַעְלָה לְמַטָּה), in the manner of: “Deep calls unto deep at the sound of Your channels” (עַל דֶּרֶךְ תְּהוֹם אֶל תְּהוֹם קוֹרֵא לְקוֹל צִנּוֹרֶיךָ) (Psalms 42:8). And concerning this the verse says (וְעַל זֶה אָמַר הַפָּסוּק): “Be strong and let your heart be courageous, and hope in Hashem” (חֲזַק וְיַאֲמֵץ לִבֶּךָ וְקַוֵּה אֶל י״י) (Psalms 27:14), meaning (רָצָה לוֹמַר), strengthen yourself through good deeds (חַזֵּק אֶת עַצְמְךָ בְּמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים), and hope in Hashem (וְקַוֵּה אֶל י״י), and you will cause the line of influx to descend from Arich Anpin (וְתִגְרֹם שֶׁקַּו הַשֶּׁפַע יוֹרֵד מֵאֲרִיךְ אַנְפִּין), to the light which is called Heh (לָאוֹר שֶׁנִּקְרָא ה׳), behold, you see with your own eyes how everything alludes to the Name Havayah (הִנְּךָ רוֹאֶה בְּעֵינֶיךָ אֵיךְ הַכֹּל רוֹמֵז לְשֵׁם הֲוָיָ״ה). And this is the secret of: “I have set Hashem before me always” (וְזֶהוּ סוֹד שִׁוִּיתִי י״י לְנֶגְדִּי תָמִיד) (Psalms 16:8), which is the general principle of all the intentions (שֶׁהוּא כְּלָל כָּל הַכַּוָּנוֹת כֻּלָּם), and it draws the inner influx up to the light of His Essence (וּמוֹשֵׁךְ שֶׁפַע הַפְּנִימִי עַד אוֹר עַצְמוּתוֹ), and encompasses all the emanated beings (וְתוֹפֵס כָּל הַנֶּאֱצָלִים), and He was, He is, and He will be (וְהוּא הָיָה הוֶה וְיִהְיֶה), excluding all the other Names (לְאַפּוֹקֵי הַשְּׁאָר שֵׁמוֹת), which in the future will be absorbed into their sources (שֶׁיִּהְיוּ לֶעָתִיד נִבְלָעִים בִּמְקוֹרֵיהֶם), which is the light of Havayah itself (שֶׁהִיא אוֹר הֲוָיָ״ה עַצְמָהּ), which is the secret of the Neshamah [Soul] (שֶׁהִיא סוֹד נְשָׁמָה). And this is precisely the intention of Mosheh our teacher, peace be upon him (וְזֶהוּ מַמָּשׁ כַּוָּנַת מֹשֶׁה רַבֵּינוּ עָלָיו הַשָּׁלוֹם), in all his prayers and in all his studies (בְּכָל תְּפִלּוֹתָיו וּבְלִמּוּדָיו), and especially in the Sefer Ra‘aya Meheimna which he composed concerning the six hundred and thirteen commandments (וּבִפְרָט בְּסֵפֶר הָרַעְיָא מְהֵימְנָא שֶׁעָשָׂה עַל תַּרְיַ״ג מִצְוֹת), and the entire purpose of his allusions in every commandment (וְכָל מְגַמַּת רְמָזָיו שֶׁל כָּל מִצְוָה), is to establish it upon the Name Havayah (מַעֲמִיד עַל שֵׁם הֲוָיָ״ה), as is known to one who has read it (כַּנּוֹדָע לְמִי שֶׁקָּרָא בּוֹ), for it is his attribute and the root of his emanation (כִּי הוּא מִדָּתוֹ וְשֹׁרֶשׁ אֲצִילוּתוֹ), and therefore he was the master of all the prophets (וְלָכֵן הָיָה אֲדוֹן כָּל הַנְּבִיאִים). And I too, the small one, the least among the companions (וְגַם אֲנִי הַקָּטָן זְעֵירָא דְּמִן חַבְרַיָּא), have taken my intentions for all the prayers and blessings (לָקַחְתִּי כַּוָּנָתִי לַתְּפִלּוֹת וְהַבְּרָכוֹת כֻּלָּם), to be founded upon the four fine golden letters of the Name Havayah (מְיוּסָדִים עַל אַרְבַּע אַדְנֵי פַז אוֹתִיּוֹת שֵׁם הֲוָיָ״ה), and I would sense and behold wonders (וְהָיִיתִי מַרְגִּישׁ וְרוֹאֶה נִפְלָאוֹת), for they are truly the keys of wisdom (שֶׁהֵם מַמָּשׁ מַפְתְּחוֹת הַחָכְמָה), and they open the windows of the supernal heavens (וּפוֹתְחִים אֲרֻבּוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם הָעֶלְיוֹנִים), fortunate is the one who merits them (אַשְׁרֵי מִי שֶׁזָּכָה לָהֶם). And concerning this it is said (וְעַל זֶה נֶאֱמַר): “In all your ways know Him, and He shall make your paths straight” (בְּכָל דְּרָכֶיךָ דָעֵהוּ וְהוּא יְיַשֵּׁר אֹרְחֹתֶיךָ) (Proverbs 3:6), in the entrances of the Merkavah [Chariot] (בִּמְבוֹאוֹת הַמֶּרְכָּבָה), and He will save you from every harm and fear (וְיַצִּילְךָ מִכָּל נֵזֶק וָפַחַד), and the verse will be fulfilled in you (וְיִתְקַיֵּם בְּךָ): “And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the Name of Hashem is called upon you, and they shall fear you” (וְרָאוּ כָּל עַמֵּי הָאָרֶץ כִּי שֵׁם י״י נִקְרָא עָלֶיךָ וְיָרְאוּ מִמֶּךָּ) (Deuteronomy 28:10). And therefore the Sefer Berit Menuchah says (וְלָכֵן אוֹמֵר הַבְּרִית מְנוּחָה), that every verse containing twenty-six letters is Holy of Holies (שֶׁכָּל פָּסוּק וּפָסוּק שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ כ״ו אוֹתִיּוֹת הוּא קֹדֶשׁ קָדָשִׁים), and if its numerical value is so beloved (וּמַה אִם הַמִּסְפָּר שֶׁלּוֹ כָּל כָּךְ חָבִיב), how much more so the Name itself (מִכָּל שֶׁכֵּן הַשֵּׁם עַצְמוֹ). And therefore all the letters of our holy Torah together with the final letters Mem, Nun, Tzadi, Peh, and Kaf (וְלָכֵן כָּל אוֹתִיּוֹת תּוֹרָתֵינוּ הַקְּדוֹשָׁה עִם מנצפ״ך), are only twenty-seven (אֵינָם אֶלָּא כ״ז), corresponding to the numerical value of the Name together with the kolel [inclusive count] (כְּמִנְיַן הַשֵּׁם וְהַכּוֹלֵל). And if you always direct your intention to the Name Havayah in every blessing (וְאִם תְּכַוֵּן לְעוֹלָם בְּשֵׁם הֲוָיָ״ה שֶׁבְּכָל בְּרָכָה וּבְרָכָה), toward the construction of the Partzufim and their great light descending from above through your intention (לְבִנְיַן הַפַּרְצוּפִים וְאוֹרָם הַגָּדוֹל הַיּוֹרֵד מִלְמַעְלָה עַל יְדֵי כַּוָּנָתְךָ), then “in all your ways know Him” (לָכֵן בְּכָל דְּרָכֶיךָ תֵּדָעֵהוּ) (Proverbs 3:6), you will succeed and prosper (תַּצְלִיחַ וְתַרְוִיחַ), and you will be beloved above and cherished below (וְתִהְיֶה אָהוּב לְמַעְלָה וְנֶחְמָד לְמַטָּה), and you will have no accuser or adversary against you (וְלֹא יִהְיֶה לְךָ שׁוּם מְקַטְרֵג וּמַשְׂטִין עָלֶיךָ). And all this is beneficial throughout the entire year (וְכָל זֶה מוֹעִיל כָּל יְמוֹת הַשָּׁנָה), and this intention is exceedingly beneficial (וְטוֹבָה הַכַּוָּנָה הַזֹּאת מְאֹד מְאֹד), and you will perceive within yourself wonder upon wonder (וְתַרְגִּישׁ בְּעַצְמְךָ הַפֶּלֶא וָפֶלֶא), the effect of the intention (פְּעֻלַּת הַכַּוָּנָה). But from the seventeenth day of Tammuz until the eleventh day of Av, which is during Bein haMetzarim [the Three Weeks] (אֲבָל מִיּוֹם י״ז בְּתַמּוּז עַד יוֹם י״א בְּאָב שֶׁהוּא בֵּין הַמְּצָרִים), this intention alone will not suffice (אָז לֹא יַסְפִּיק הַכַּוָּנָה הַזֹּאת לְבַדָּהּ), as I shall explain in its place (כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲבָאֵר בִּמְקוֹמוֹ), with the help of the Holy One Blessed Be He and His Shekhinah (בְּסִיַּעְתָא דְּקב״ה וּשְׁכִינְתֵּיהּ). Blessed is Hashem forever, Amen and Amen (יִתְבָּרַךְ י״י לְעוֹלָם אָמֵן וְאָמֵן).
