Daf 21b (דַּף כ״א ע״ב)
This one receives all the stones from the ballistae p1-26(הַזֶּה הַמְקַבֵּל כָּל אַבְנֵי בְּלִיסְטְרָאוֹת), and this is the meaning of, “the enlightened ones” (וְזֶהוּ אוֹמְרוֹ הַמַּשְׂכִּילִים) (Daniel 12:3), for they are the letters, and they too receive abundance (שֶׁהֵם הָאוֹתִיּוֹת גַּם הֵם יְקַבְּלוּ שֶׁפַע), and “they shall shine like the appearance of the movements of those who sing” (וְיַזְהִירוּ כְּגוַונָא דְּתָנוּעֵי דְּמַנְגְּנֵי). Its explanation is: like the angels who move in the mystery of song from their place in order to ascend (פֵּרוּשׁ כְּמוֹ הַמַּלְאָכִים הַמִּתְנוֹעֲעִים בְּסוֹד שִׁיר מִמְּקוֹמָם לַעֲלוֹת), and before this they were called those who stand (וְלִפְנֵי זֶה הָיוּ נִקְרָאִים עוֹמְדִים), in the mystery of, “And I will give you those who walk among these who stand” (בְּסוֹד וְאֶתְּנָה לְּךָ מַהְלְכִים בֵּין הָעוֹמְדִים הָאֵלֶּה) (Zechariah 3:7), spoken concerning Yehoshua ben Yehotzadak the Kohen Gadol [High Priest] (אֵצֶל יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בֶּן יְהוֹצָדָק הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדוֹל), and through the mystery of song they go (וּבְסוֹד הַשִּׁיר הֵם הוֹלְכִים). It is the mystery of prayer (הִיא סוֹד הַתְּפִלָּה), they go and move in order to ascend above (הֵם הוֹלְכִים וּמִתְנוֹעֲעִים לַעֲלוֹת לְמַעְלָה), for without the melody, which is the song, they have no movement whatsoever and are called those who stand (כִּי בְּזוּלַת הַנִּיגּוּן הוּא הַשִּׁיר אֵין לָהֶם תְּנוּעָה כְּלָל וְנִקְרְאוּ עוֹמְדִים), and they literally take the letters of the prayer (וְהֵם לוֹקְחִים מַמָּשׁ הָאוֹתִיּוֹת שֶׁל תְּפִלָּה), and sing with them and ascend (וּמְזַמְּרִים בָּהֶם וְעוֹלִים), as it is in the Zohar Chadash on the verse, “And you shall place it in the basket, and you shall go to the place” (כְּמוֹ שֶׁהוּא בְּזוֹהַר חָדָשׁ עַל פָּסוּק וְשַׂמְתָּ בַטֶּנֶא וְהָלַכְתָּ אֶל הַמָּקוֹם) (Deuteronomy 26:2), the mystery of the Keriat Shema (סוֹד הַקְּרִיאַת שְׁמַע), and Rabbi Elazar the Great, in Parashat Lech Lecha, Midrash HaNe'elam, daf 47, says (וְרַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר הַגָּדוֹל פּ׳ לֶךְ לְךָ מִדְרַשׁ הַנֶּעְלָם דַּף מ״ז בְּאוֹמְרוֹ), “And sixty angels surrounding the Throne of Glory take them, each and every one taking hold of them, and they sing with them every night” (וְנָסְבִין לוֹן שִׁתִּין מַלְאָכִין דְּסַחֲרִין כּוּרְסֵי יְקָרָא כָּל חַד וְחַד אִתְאַחַד וּמְזַמְּרִין בְּהוֹן כָּל לֵילְיָא). They are the mystery of the sixty attached words of the Keriat Shema (הֵם סוֹד הַשִּׁשִּׁים דְּבֵקִים שֶׁבַּקְּרִיאַת שְׁמַע), corresponding to the sixty Elohim in Ze'ir Anpin, guarding the Nukevah from the clinging of the Klipot (כְּנֶגֶד הַשִּׁשִּׁים אֱלֹהִים שֶׁבִּזְעֵיר הַשּׁוֹמְרִים אֶת הַנְּקֵבָה מִדְּבִיקוּת הַקְּלִיפּוֹת), when one places a separation between the attached words and divides them (כְּשֶׁמֵּבִיא רֶוַח בֵּין הַדְּבֵקִים וּמְחַלְּקָם), as it is written, “And the Kohen shall take the basket from your hand” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב וְלָקַח הַכֹּהֵן הַטֶּנֶא מִיָּדֶךָ) (Deuteronomy 26:4), etc. (וְכוּ׳).
Also here the angels take the letters of the prayer (גַּם בְּכָאן לוֹקְחִים הַמַּלְאָכִים אוֹתִיּוֹת הַתְּפִלָּה), and the forty-nine gates (וּמ״ט), and sing with them and move in order to ascend above (וּמְזַמְּרִין בְּהוּ וּמִתְנוֹעֲעִים לַעֲלוֹת לְמַעְלָה), therefore the Zohar says, “Like the appearance of the movements of those who sing” (וְלָכֵן אוֹמֵר הַזֹּהַר כְּגוַונָא דְּתָנוּעֵי דְּמַנְגְּנֵי), like the movement of the angels who move in the mystery of song (כְּגוֹן תְּנוּעַת הַמַּלְאָכִים הַמִּתְנוֹעֲעִים בְּסוֹד שִׁירָה), sparkling and cleaving together to ascend above (וּמִתְנוֹצְצִים וּמִתְדַּבְּקִים יַחַד לַעֲלוֹת לְמַעְלָה), in the mystery of the power and abundance of the letters (בְּסוֹד כֹּחַ וְשֶׁפַע הָאוֹתִיּוֹת), to ascend (נִמְחַק> לַעֲלוֹת>), and afterward they become enlightened ones, acquiring letters by selecting the food from the refuse (וְנַעֲשׂוּ אַחַ״כ מַשְׂכִּילִים הַקּוֹנִים אוֹתִיּוֹת מְבוֹרָר אֹכֶל מִתּוֹךְ הַפְּסֹלֶת), and the vocalization marks that move the letter itself (וּנְקוּדַת הַמְנַעֲנְעִים הָאוֹת עַצְמוֹ), and the cantillation marks of the Zarka [Throwing Accent], casting them upward (וּטְעָמִים שֶׁל הַזַּרְקָא הַזּוֹרֵק אוֹתָם לְעֵילָא), and saving them from the clinging of the serpent that is upon the Zarka [Throwing Accent] (וּמַצִּיל אוֹתָם מִדְּבִיקוּת הַנָּחָשׁ אֲשֶׁר עַל הַזַּרְקָא), and afterward they become Segulah [Treasure] (וְאַחַ״כ נַעֲשִׂים סְגֻלָּה), and become words and awesome Names (וְנַעֲשִׂים תֵּיבוֹת וְשֵׁמוֹת נוֹרָאִים), and through the Zivug [Union] of Ze'ir Anpin and His Nukvah, and Abba and Imma together (וּבְהִזְדַּוֵּג ז״א וְנוּקְבֵיהּ וְאַבָּא וְאִימָא יַחַד), in the mystery of Mayin Nukvin [Feminine Waters] (בְּסוֹד מַיִין נוּקְבִין), these bring forth angels, souls, and enlightened ones below (הַלָּלוּ מוֹצִיאִים מַלְאָכִים וּנְשָׁמוֹת וּמַשְׂכִּילִים לְמַטָּה), all the abundance of the Light of the Torah (כָּל שֶׁפַע אוֹר הַתּוֹרָה), and as soon as the angels begin to sing with the letters of the prayer and the Torah (וְכֵיוָן שֶׁהַמַּלְאָכִים מַתְחִילִים לְנַגֵּן בְּאוֹתִיּוֹת הַתְּפִלָּה וְהַתּוֹרָה), immediately the letters proceed as one united band (תֵּכֶף וּמִיָּד הוֹלְכִים הָאוֹתִיּוֹת בַּאֲגֻדָּה אַחַת), they are (הֵם).
Notes
Rashi on Shemot 19:4: Upon the wings of eagles (עַל כַּנְפֵי נְשָׁרִים). Like the eagle that carries its young upon its wings (כַּנֶּשֶׁר הַנּוֹשֵׂא גּוֹזָלָיו עַל כְּנָפָיו), for all the other birds place their young between their feet (שֶׁכָּל שְׁאָר הָעוֹפוֹת נוֹתְנִים אֶת בְּנֵיהֶם בֵּין רַגְלֵיהֶם), because they fear another bird flying above them (לְפִי שֶׁמִּתְיָרְאִין מֵעוֹף אַחֵר שֶׁפּוֹרֵחַ עַל גַּבֵּיהֶם), but this eagle fears only man, lest he shoot an arrow at it (אֲבָל הַנֶּשֶׁר הַזֶּה אֵינוֹ מִתְיָרֵא אֶלָּא מִן הָאָדָם שֶׁמָּא יִזְרֹק בּוֹ חֵץ), because no bird flies above it (לְפִי שֶׁאֵין עוֹף פּוֹרֵחַ עַל גַּבָּיו), therefore it places them upon its wings (לְכָךְ נוֹתְנוֹ עַל כְּנָפָיו), saying, “It is better that the arrow enter me than my son” (אוֹמֵר מוּטָב יִכָּנֵס הַחֵץ בִּי וְלֹא בִּבְנִי). So too did I do (אַף אֲנִי עָשִׂיתִי כֵן): “And the Angel of Elohim journeyed... and came between the camp of Egypt...” (וַיִּסַּע מַלְאַךְ הָאֱלֹהִים וְגוֹ׳, וַיָּבֹא בֵּין מַחֲנֵה מִצְרַיִם וְגוֹ׳) (Exodus 14:19–20), and the Egyptians were casting arrows and stones from ballistae (וְהָיוּ מִצְרַיִם זוֹרְקִים חִצִּים וְאַבְנֵי בָּלִיסְטְרָאוֹת), and the cloud received them (וְהֶעָנָן מְקַבְּלָם).
