Daf 39b (דַּף ל״ט ע״ב)
For its place becomes recognizable (כִּי נִכָּר מְקוֹמוֹ), that is to say, “within it is He” (ר״ל בּוֹ הוּא), and He becomes distinguishable from within it, so that I am able to say, “This is He” (וְנִכָּר מִתּוֹכוֹ עַד שֶׁאֲנִי יָכוֹל לוֹמַר זֶה הוּא), therefore it does not acquire form (וְלָכֵן אֵינוֹ קוֹנֶה צוּרָה), because it does not cleave to their life-force, namely the Light of the drops within it (מֵאַחַר שֶׁאֵינוֹ נִדְבָּק עִמָּהֶם הַחַיּוּת שֶׁלָּהֶם שֶׁהוּא אוֹר הַטִּפִּין שֶׁבּוֹ), for in Holiness they are ten and not eleven (כִּי בַּקְּדֻשָּׁה הוּא עֶשֶׂר וְלֹא אַחַד עָשָׂר), while in impurity there are “eleven curtains of goats” (וּבַטֻּמְאָה עַשְׁתֵּי עֶשְׂרֵה יְרִיעוֹת עִזִּים) (Exodus 26:7), for in Holiness their life-force is mingled within them (כִּי בַּקְּדֻשָּׁה הַחַיּוּת שֶׁלָּהֶם מְעוֹרָב בְּתוֹכָם), in the mystery of, “She and Her life-force are one within Them” (בְּסוֹד אִיהִי וְחַיּוֹהִי חַד בְּהוֹן), and as long as it has no union it does not take on form (וְכָל זְמַן שֶׁאֵין לוֹ יִחוּד אֵינוֹ מִצְטַיֵּיר), for form is composed of many colors (כִּי הַצּוּרָה הִיא מִכַּמָּה גְּוָנִים), because it is not revealed so clearly in the mind of Adam Belial (כִּי הִיא אֵינָהּ מִתְגַּלָּה כָּל כָּךְ בְּמוֹחַ אָדָם בְּלִיַּעַל), since it has no form (מֵאַחַר שֶׁאֵין לָהּ צִיּוּר), for the first Gevurah [Power of Judgment] is not so much a Klipah and does not take on form to perform its function (כִּי הַגְּבוּרָה הָרִאשׁוֹנָה אֵינָהּ כָּל כָּךְ קְלִיפָּה וְאֵינָהּ מִצְטַיֶּרֶת לִפְעֹל פְּעֻלָּתָהּ), therefore it is said, “Cursed are you above all cattle” (וְלָכֵן נֶאֱמַר אָרוּר אַתָּה מִכָּל הַבְּהֵמָה) (Genesis 3:14), for they do not have such permission to appear in the form and likeness of a human being (שֶׁאֵין לָהֶם רְשׁוּת כָּל כָּךְ לְהִתְרָאוֹת בְּצוּרַת וּבִדְמוּת אָדָם), except for the Darkness, namely Samael, the prince of Esav and Edom (אִם לֹא הַחֹשֶׁךְ הוּא סַמָּאֵ״ל שַׂר עֵשָׂו וֶאֱדוֹם), which is the third force of impurity (אֲשֶׁר הוּא כֹּחַ שְׁלִישִׁי לַטֻּמְאָה), and because the Gevurah [Power of Judgment] of Binah within the Malkhut is the first Gevurah of MNTZPKH (וּלְהִיוֹת שֶׁגְּבוּרַת בִּינָה שֶׁבַּמַּלְכוּת הִיא הַגְּבוּרָה הָרִאשׁוֹנָה שֶׁבְּמנצפ״ך), it did not establish so strong a Klipah (לָכֵן לֹא הֶעֱמִידָה כָּל כָּךְ קְלִיפָּה), because it itself is Rachamim [Mercies] (מֵאַחַר שֶׁהִיא עַצְמָהּ רַחֲמִים), and does not acquire the form of Judgment for itself in the mighty Fire (וְאֵינָהּ קוֹנָה צִיּוּר דִּין לְעַצְמָהּ בָּאֵשׁ הֶחָזָק), rather it did not abandon its sweetening (אֶלָּא לֹא הִנִּיחָה מִמִּתּוּקָהּ), and through this only a small amount of refuse was cast away (וְעַל יָדָהּ נִשְׁלַךְ פְּסוֹלֶת מְעַט קְט), namely the portion within the Malkhut, which is called “the earth was” (שֶׁהוּא חֵלֶק שֶׁבַּמַּלְכוּת אֲשֶׁר נִקְרֵאת הָאָרֶץ הָיְתָה), therefore it does not acquire form, blackness, or Darkness until its descent (לָכֵן אֵינָהּ קוֹנָה צִיּוּר וְהָאוֹכֶם וְהַחֹשֶׁךְ עַד יְרִידָתָם), its descent below into the third level (יְרִידָתוֹ לְמַטָּה בַּמַּדְרֵגָה הַשְּׁלִישִׁית), therefore it does not become actually clothed nor visible to the eyes (לָכֵן אֵינָהּ מִתְלַבֶּשֶׁת בְּפֹעַל וְאֵינָהּ נִרְאֵית לָעֵינַיִם), for it does not yet so strongly grasp the Fire of the mighty Judgment (שֶׁכָּל כָּךְ אֵינָהּ אוֹחֶזֶת בָּאֵשׁ שֶׁל הַדִּין הֶחָזָק), like a flame bound and clothed within a burning coal visible to all (כְּשַׁלְהֶבֶת קְשׁוּרָה וּמְלֻבֶּשֶׁת בְּגַחֶלֶת הַבּוֹעֶרֶת לְעֵינֵי כֹּל), for from a person's name and from his form his activity, essence, and place are recognized (כִּי מִתּוֹךְ שֵׁם הָאָדָם וּמִתּוֹךְ צוּרָתוֹ מַכִּירִים פְּעֻלָּתוֹ וּמַהוּתוֹ וּמְקוֹמוֹ), but here it has neither form nor activity (אֲבָל כָּאן אֵין לוֹ צוּרָה וּפְעוּלָּה), because the perverted Judgment is hidden within it and is not revealed until its descent (כִּי הַדִּין הַמְעֻוָּת נֶעְלָם בּוֹ וְאֵינוֹ מִתְגַּלֶּה עַד יְרִידָתוֹ), and this is the reason it is not clothed in the very mighty Fire of the Gevurah of Gevurah or the Gevurah of Hod (וְזֶהוּ הַסִּבָּה שֶׁאֵינוֹ מִתְלַבֵּשׁ בְּעֶצֶם הָאֵשׁ הֶחָזָק שֶׁל גְּבוּרַת גְּבוּרָה אוֹ גְּבוּרַת הוֹד), from which the Darkness is born and from which the activity of the mighty Judgment and its form in the colors are drawn (שֶׁנּוֹלַד מִמֶּנּוּ הַחֹשֶׁךְ וְיִמָּשֵׁךְ מִזֶּה פְּעֻלַּת הַדִּין הֶחָזָק וְצִיּוּרוֹ בַּגְּוָנִים), but because it is clothed in absolute Darkness it does not produce Darkness (אֲבָל מֵאַחַר שֶׁמִּתְלַבֵּשׁ בַּחֹשֶׁךְ הַמֻּחְלָט אֵינוֹ פּוֹעֵל חֹשֶׁךְ), on the contrary, it acquires the blocking, concealment, and hiding of Judgment (וְאַדְרַבָּה הוּא קוֹנֶה חֲסִימַת הַדִּין וְהַעֲלָמָתוֹ וּגְנִיזָתוֹ), therefore he said, “Everything has a garment with which to be clothed” (לָכֵן אָמַר לְכֹלָּא אִית לֵיהּ לְבוּשָׁא לְאִתְלַבְּשָׁא). Its explanation is: Bohu is clothed in the Gevurah of Gevurah, therefore it performs its function (פֵּרוּשׁוֹ בֹּהוּ הוּא מִתְלַבֵּשׁ בִּגְבוּרַת גְּבוּרָה לָכֵן הִיא פּוֹעֶלֶת פְּעוּלָּתוֹ).
