Daf 41b (דַּף מ״א ע״ב)
For Tohu is the Klipah surrounding this subtle black Fire in order to receive from it (כִּי תֹהוּ הִיא הַקְּלִיפָּה הַסּוֹבֶבֶת אֶת הָאֵשׁ הַדַּק [נמחק] הַשָּׁחוֹר הַזֶּה לְקַבֵּל מִמֶּנּוּ), and it is the aforementioned Gevurah of Hod (וְהִיא גְּבוּרַת הוֹד הַנִּזְכָּר), for all the Klipot become entangled in her Sefirah of Hod (כִּי כָּל הַקְּלִיפּוֹת מִסְתַּבְּכִים בִּסְפִירַת הוֹד דִּידָהּ), because Samael corrupted this thigh (כִּי סַמָּאֵ״ל קִלְקֵל הַיָּרֵךְ הַזֶּה), until even “the knees of the Rabbis grow weak from them” (עַד שֶׁאֲפִלּוּ בִּרְכֵי דְּרַבָּנָן דְּמִשְׁלַהֵי מִינַיְיהוּ הֲוֵי) (Bava Metzia 84a), and concerning it, it is said, “My splendor has been turned within me into destruction” (וְעָלָיו נֶאֱמַר וְהוֹדִי נֶהְפַּךְ עָלַי לְמַשְׁחִית) (Daniel 10:8). And Netzach has no power to sweeten it in the mystery of the Matkela [Balance] (וְנֵצַח אֵין לוֹ יְכֹלֶת לְמַתְּקָהּ בְּסוֹד מַתְקְלָא), for there too they take hold of part of it, though not all of it (כִּי גַּם שָׁם נֶאֱחָזִים בְּקְצָתוֹ וְלֹא בְּכֻלּוֹ), as it is said, “Moreover, the Netzach of Yisrael will not lie” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר וְגַם נֵצַח יִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא יְשַׁקֵּר) (I Samuel 15:29), entirely (כֻּלּוֹ), even though half of it is covered by bands of destroying angels (אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁחֶצְיוֹ מְכֻסֶּה בִּגְדוּדֵי מַלְאֲכֵי חַבָּלָה). Darkness is the Fire (חֹשֶׁךְ הוּא אֵשָׁא), that is, it kindles all the courts of judgment (דְּהַיְינוּ שֶׁמַּדְלִיק כָּל הַבָּתֵּי דִינִין), and Tohu is that which surrounds Holiness and receives from it (וְתֹהוּ הִיא הַמְסַבֶּבֶת הַקְּדֻשָּׁה מְקַבֶּלֶת מִמֶּנּוּ), and when Tohu has the power to cleave to this Darkness (וּכְשֶׁיֵּשׁ לְתֹהוּ כֹּחַ לְדָבֵק עִם הַחֹשֶׁךְ הַזֶּה), then it is certainly Fire (אָז הוּא אֵשׁ וַדַּאי), but when the Klipah cannot take hold of Hod (אֲבָל בִּזְמַן שֶׁאֵין הַקְּלִיפָּה יְכוֹלָה לֶאֱחֹז בְּהוֹד), then there is certainly sweetening there (אָז וַדַּאי יֵשׁ שָׁם מִתּוּק), as it was in the days of Mattityahu son of Yochanan the Kohen Gadol (כְּמוֹ שֶׁהָיָה בִּזְמַן מַתִּתְיָהוּ בֶּן יוֹחָנָן כֹּהֵן גָּדוֹל). Therefore it says, “Darkness is the Fire, but it is not Fire” (וְלָכֵן אוֹמֵר חֹשֶׁךְ הוּא אֵשָׁא וְלָאו אִיהוּ אֵשָׁא), “Darkness, except when it strengthens Tohu” (חֲשׁוֹכָא בַּר כַּד אִתְקְפִיף לְתֹהוּ), and the mystery of this is, “And his eyes grew dim from seeing” (וְרָזָא דָא וַתִּכְהֶיןָ עֵינָיו מֵרְאֹת) (Genesis 27:1).
Its explanation is: when Tohu takes hold of Hod (פֵּרוּשׁ בִּזְמַן שֶׁאוֹחֵז הַתֹּהוּ בְּהוֹד), then the exceedingly dark Fire prevails there (אָז גּוֹבֵר שָׁם הָאֵשׁ הַחָשׁוּךְ מְאֹד), and it is the final Gevurah of Hod (וְהִיא הַגְּבוּרָה הָאַחֲרוֹנָה שֶׁל הוֹד), in the mystery of, “The curves of your thighs” (בְּסוֹד חַמּוּקֵי יְרֵכַיִךְ) (Song of Songs 7:2), for the thighs extend farther downward than the Yesod (כִּי הַיְרֵכַיִם מִתְפַּשְּׁטִים יוֹתֵר לְמַטָּה מִיְּסוֹד), therefore it is the final Gevurah, called Bei Shimshi [Twilight] (וְלָכֵן הִיא גְּבוּרָה אַחֲרוֹנָה הַנִּקְרֵאת בֵּי שִׁמְשֵׁי), adjacent to the night (הַסְּמוּכָה לְלֵילְיָא), it is the Malkhut itself (הִיא מַלְכוּת עַצְמָהּ), and there no Light issues forth from it (וְשָׁם אֵין אוֹר יוֹצֵא מִמֶּנּוּ), rather everything there is Darkness (אֶלָּא הַכֹּל הוּא חָשׁוּךְ שָׁם), and it does not illuminate below (וְאֵינוֹ מֵאִיר לְמַטָּה), and no prophet ever prophesied from it (וְלֹא הָיָה שׁוּם נָבִיא מִתְנַבֵּא מִמֶּנּוּ מֵעוֹלָם), in the mystery of, “And it came to pass, when Yitzchak was old” (בְּסוֹד וַיְהִי כִּי זָקֵן יִצְחָק) (Genesis 27:1), for this is that Gevurah (שֶׁהִיא הַגְּבוּרָה הַזֹּאת), and it reached the level of Bei Shimshi [Twilight] (וְהִגִּיעַ לְמַדְרֵגַת בֵּי שִׁמְשֵׁי), “that his eyes grew dim from seeing” (וַתִּכְהֶיןָ עֵינָיו מֵרְאֹת) (Genesis 27:1). The Light and the sweetening departed from it (נִסְתַּלֵּק מִמֶּנּוּ הָאוֹר וְהַמִּתּוּק), and Darkness remained (וְנִשְׁאַר חֹשֶׁךְ), and then Yitzchak is the letters Ketz Chai [End of Life] (וְאָז יִצְחָק הוּא אוֹתִיּוֹת ק״ץ ח״י), for from there the end comes to every living being (מִשָּׁם פּוֹסְקִים קֵץ לְכָל חַי), and life is taken from him, Heaven forbid (וְנוֹטְלִים מִמֶּנּוּ חַיִּים ח״ו), and concerning this it is said, “The end of all flesh has come before Me” (וְעַל זֶה נֶאֱמַר קֵץ כָּל בָּשָׂר בָּא לְפָנַי) (Genesis 6:13). “The face of evil is Darkness, for it shows favor to evil” (חֹשֶׁךְ פְּנֵי רַע דְּאַסְבִּיר אַנְפִּין לְרַע), and when it shows favor to evil (וְכַד אַסְבִּיר אַנְפִּין לְרַע), then it is called Darkness, because it rests upon it to strengthen it (כַּדֵּין אִתְקְרֵי חֹשֶׁךְ דְּשָׁארֵי עֲלֵיהּ לְאִתְקְפָא לֵיהּ), and the mystery of this is, “And Darkness was upon the face of the Deep” (וְרָזָא דָא וְחֹשֶׁךְ עַל פְּנֵי תְהוֹם) (Genesis 1:2).
