Daf 50a (דַּף נ׳ ע״א)

On the contrary (וְאַדְרַבָּה), it brings forth the refuse and casts it outside (הוּא מוֹצִיא הַפְּסוֹלֶת וְדוֹחֶה אוֹתוֹ לַחוּץ), taking the good within it and driving away the evil (וְלוֹקֵחַ הַטּוֹב שֶׁבּוֹ וּמְגָרֵשׁ הָרַע), but Shaddai is not so (אֲבָל שַׁדַּ״י אֵינוֹ כֵן), for from it come both good and evil princes (כִּי מִמֶּנּוּ בָּאִים הַשָּׂרִים טוֹבִים וְרָעִים), as the Zohar Chadash says in Parashat Lech Lecha (כְּמוֹ שֶׁאוֹמֵר הַזֹּהַר חָדָשׁ פּ׳ לֶךְ לְךָ), “The good one—this is the Jewish Shed [Demon]” (אֶת הַטּוֹב דָּא שֵׁד יְהוּדָאִי), “who gives him wealth in this world” (דְּיָהִיב לֵיהּ עוֹשֶׁר בְּעָלְמָא דֵּין), and assists him (וְהוּא מְסַיְּעוֹ), in the mystery of Ruach [Spirit], which is from the World of Yetzirah (בְּסוֹד רוּחַ שֶׁהוּא מֵעוֹלָם הַיְצִירָה), and understand this (וְהָבֵן).

“And after the wind, an earthquake; Hashem was not in the earthquake, for the Name Tzevaot rules over it in the mystery of Bohu, therefore it is called Bohu-Ra'ash [Bohu–Earthquake], for it is never without commotion” (וְאַחַר הָרוּחַ רַעַשׁ לֹא בָרַעַשׁ יהו״ה דְּהָא שֵׁם צְבָאוֹת שָׁלְטָא בֵּיהּ בְּרָזָא דְּבֹהוּ וְעַל דָּא אִקְרֵי בֹּהוּ רַעַשׁ דְּלָאו אִיהוּ בְּלָא רַעַשׁ) (I Kings 19:11). Its explanation is: after this storm wind, this earthquake takes hold (וּפֵרוּשׁוֹ וְאַחַר הָרוּחַ סְעָרָה הַזֶּה אוֹחֵז הָרַעַשׁ הַזֶּה), and if you reverse the letters of Ra'ash [Earthquake], you obtain Se'ar [Hair] (הָפוּךְ רַעַשׁ וְתִמְצָא שַׂעַר), namely the storm wind (דְּהַיְינוּ רוּחַ סְעָרָה). At first, Tohu was mixed in its fall together with Bohu (וּבָרִאשׁוֹנָה הָיְתָה תֹּהוּ מְעוֹרֶבֶת בִּנְפִילָתָהּ עִם הַבֹּהוּ), which is the mystery of the aforementioned drops (שֶׁהוּא סוֹד הַטִּפִּין הַנִּזְכָּרִים), and it was scarcely distinguishable (וְכִמְעַט שֶׁלֹּא הָיְתָה נִכֶּרֶת), afterward the food was separated from the refuse (וְאַחַ״כ אֹכֶל מִתּוֹךְ הַפְּסוֹלֶת), and although we said that a very small amount remained in this Tohu to sustain its life (וְאַף שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר שֶׁנִּשְׁאַר בַּתֹּהוּ הַזֶּה מְעַט הַקָּט כְּדֵי חַיּוּתוֹ), nevertheless there remained there the preparation continually to raise these sparks (עַל כָּל זֹאת הָיְתָה שָׁם הֲכָנָה לְהַעֲלוֹת תָּמִיד הַנִּיצוֹצִין הַלָּלוּ), to give them life (לְהַחֲיוֹתָם), and to slay the sacrifices to the dead that had been created from them (וּלְהָמִית הַזִּבְחֵי מֵתִים שֶׁנִּבְרְאוּ מֵהֶם), from the sin (מֵחֵטְא), and Tohu itself (וְהַתֹּהוּ עַצְמוֹ), until each acquired its own name (עַד שֶׁכָּל אֶחָד קוֹנֶה שֵׁם לְעַצְמוֹ), in the mystery of Tohu, the nest of impurity (בְּסוֹד תֹּהוּ קִינָא דְּמְסָאֲבוּתָא), while Bohu consists of the drops and sparks within it (וּבֹהוּ הֵם הַטִּפִּין וְהַנִּיצוֹצוֹת שֶׁבָּהּ). And who brought this about (וּמִי עָשָׂה זֶה)? The storm wind (הָרוּחַ סְעָרָה), which kept raging and moving (שֶׁהָיָה מַרְעִישׁ וְהוֹלֵךְ), and from it came the earthquake that shakes the world (וְנַעֲשֶׂה מִמֶּנּוּ רַעַשׁ הַמַּרְעִישׁ אֶת הָעוֹלָם), desiring to destroy the work of Holiness (וּרְצוֹנוֹ לַהֲרֹס פְּעֻלַּת הַקְּדֻשָּׁה), together with its hosts, namely the angels (וְחַיָּלוֹתֶיהָ הֵם הַמַּלְאָכִים), so that they could not wage war, Heaven forbid (שֶׁלֹּא יָכְלוּ לְהִלָּחֵם ח״ו). Although we have said that Bohu consists of the holy drops mentioned above (וְאַף כִּי אָמַרְנוּ בֹּהוּ הֵם הַטִּפִּין הַקְּדוֹשִׁים הַנִּזְכָּרִים), nevertheless around it remains a portion of the Manin Tevirin [Shattered Vessels], called Ra'ash [Earthquake] (עַל כָּל זֹאת יֵשׁ סְבִיבוֹ חֵלֶק מָאנִין תְּבִירִין הַנִּקְרָא רַעַשׁ), although it is not as much impurity as the Tohu that fell below (אַף שֶׁאֵינוֹ כָּל כָּךְ זוֹהֲמָא כְּמוֹ הַתֹּהוּ שֶׁנָּפַל לְמַטָּה), and the expression Bohu is fitting for it (וְיִצְדַּק בּוֹ לְשׁוֹן בֹּהוּ), because it consists of two words, “within it is He” (שֶׁהֵם שְׁתֵּי מִלּוֹת בּוֹ הוּא), that is to say, within the earthquake is its inner core, namely the drops held captive under its power (פֵּרוּשׁ בְּהָרַעַשׁ הוּא הַתּוֹךְ שֶׁלּוֹ שֶׁהֵם הַטִּפִּין הַכְּבוּשִׁים תַּחַת יָדוֹ), and it keeps them in turmoil so that they cannot ascend and cleave to their root (וּמַרְעִישָׁם שֶׁלֹּא יוּכְלוּ לַעֲלוֹת וְלִדְבֹּק בְּשָׁרְשָׁם), for Ra'ash [Earthquake] is Eser [Ten] with the letters reversed (כִּי רַעַשׁ הוּא עֶשֶׂר בְּהָפוּךְ אַתְוָון), and it throws them into turmoil so that they cannot cleave to the Ten Holy Levels of the Malkhut (וְהוּא מַרְעִישָׁם שֶׁלֹּא יוּכְלוּ לִדְבֹּק בְּהָעֶשֶׂר מַעֲלוֹת קְדוֹשׁוֹת שֶׁבַּמַּלְכוּת).
