Chapter 40, Section 5 (פֶּרֶק מ׳ אוֹת ה׳)

5. And upon completing twelve days (ה. וּבְכַלּוֹתוֹ שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר יוֹם), he shall go forth to every measure of Torah which he may seek—whether for Mikra or for Mishnah or for contemplation of the Merkavah (יֵצֵא לְכָל מִדּוֹת תּוֹרָה שֶׁיְּבַקֵּשׁ לְמִקְרָא אוֹ לְמִשְׁנָה אוֹ לִצְפִיַּת הַמֶּרְכָּבָה), for with a measure of purity does he go forth (כִּי בְּמִדַּת טָהֳרָה הוּא יוֹצֵא), and with affliction and great self-mortification (וּמִצַּעַר וּמִסִּגּוּף גָּדוֹל), for the learning is in our hands (כִּי תַלְמוּד הוּא בְּיָדֵנוּ), and it is the ordinance of the early ones and the tradition of the ancients (וּתְקַנַּת הָרִאשׁוֹנִים וּמָסוֹרֶת עֲתִיקִים), which they wrote and left for the generations (שֶׁכָּתְבוּ וְהִנִּיחוּ הַדּוֹרוֹת), to be used by the modest (לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בּוֹ צְנוּעִים), and whoever is worthy is answered through them (וּמִי שֶׁרָאוּי נַעֲנֶה בָהֶם). Rabbi Yishma’el said: What shall a man begin with before he prays to this prince of Torah? (אָמַר רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל: מָה יִפְתַּח אָדָם קֹדֶם שֶׁיִּתְפַּלֵּל שַׂר שֶׁל תּוֹרָה זֶה) When he stands he shall say: Be exalted! Be lifted up! Be raised on high! etc. (כֵּיוָן שֶׁעוֹמֵד יֹאמַר: תִּתְהַדָּר תִּתְרוֹמֵם תִּתְנַשֵּׂא וְגוֹ'), as it is written in the first chapter (כַּדְכְּתִיב בְּפֶרֶק רִאשׁוֹן). And he shall adjure and say: Who shall not exalt You, O awesome and fearful King? (וְיַשְׁבִּיעַ וְיֹאמַר: מִי לֹא יְרוֹמֵם אוֹתְךָ מֶלֶךְ נוֹרָא), and overwhelmed are all Your ministers (וּמְבוֹהָל עַל כָּל מְשָׁרְתֶיךָ), with trembling and quaking they serve You (בְּרַתֵּת וּבְזִיעַ מְשָׁרְתִים אוֹתְךָ), in haste and dread they are shaken by the decree (בִּבְהָלָה וּבְרַעֲדָה מִתְבַּהֲלִים בַּגְּזֵרָה), with one voice they utter Your awesome Name (בְּפֶה אֶחָד שִׁמְךָ נוֹרָא מוֹצִיאִין), from fear and awe, for they stand before You (מִפְּנֵי אֵימָה וְיִרְאָה שֶׁעוֹמְדִים מִלְּפָנֶיךָ). There is no earlier and no later (אֵין מֻקְדָּם וְאֵין מְאֻחָר), and whoever delays a sage by Your Name—by even the measure of a gate—is thrust aside (וְכָל הַמְעַכֵּב אֶת חָכָם בִּשְׁמֶךָ בְּשִׁעוּר כַּמָּה שֶׁל שַׁעַר נִדְחָף), and from the flame they are driven (וּמִשַּׁלְהֶבֶת מִדַּחֶפֶת אוֹתָן), as it is said: “Holy, holy, holy is Hashem Tzeva’ot…” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: קָדוֹשׁ קָדוֹשׁ קָדוֹשׁ ה׳ צְבָאוֹת וְגוֹ'). And this is the Kabbalah: he shall adjure the final princes—Yofiya’el, Sarchiya’el, Shedriya’el, Chesediya’el (וְזֹאת הַקַּבָּלָה: יַשְׁבִּיעַ הַשָּׂרִים הָאַחֲרוֹנִים יוֹפִיאֵ״ל סַרְכִּיאֵ״ל שֶׁדְרִיאֵ״ל חֶסְדִּיאֵ״ל)—with a great seal and a terrible crown (בְּחוֹתָם גָּדוֹל וְכֶתֶר נוֹרָא), but he shall not speak it aloud (אֲבָל לֹא יוֹצִיא בְּפִיו), rather he shall write it in the language of an oath (אֶלָּא יִכְתְּבֶנּוּ בִּלְשׁוֹן שְׁבוּעָה). And this is the seal: Tzurt”k (וְזֶהוּ חוֹתָם: צוּרְט״ק), DeRa”a (דְּר״ע), Ginat (גִּינ״ת), Erech (עֵר״ך), Nazir (נְזִי״ר), Shurtin (שׁוּרְטִי״ן), Yedudi”yah (יְדוּדִי״ה). And this is the awesome crown: Azbug”ah (וְזֶהוּ כֶּתֶר נוֹרָא: אַזְבּוּג״ה), Avzadehu (אַבְזַדֵּה״וּ), Zoh (זוֹ״ה), Veziyah (וְזִי״ה), Zoh (זוֹ״ה), Tziyah (צִי״ה). And before he writes the great seal, he shall pray his prayer (וְקוֹדֶם שֶׁיִּכְתּוֹב חוֹתָם גָּדוֹל יִתְפַלֵּל תְּפִלָּתוֹ), “O True God, be sanctified forever and ever” (אֵל אֱמֶת תִּתְקַדֵּשׁ לְנֵצַח נְצָחִים), “You created in wisdom, and established the earth” (בָּרָאתָ בִתְבוּנָה אֶרֶץ יְסָדְתָּהּ).
