And there is a question (וְיֵשׁ לִסְפֵּק), how could the Erev Rav request a calf or any leader (אֵיךְ עֵרֶב רַב הָיוּ מְבַקְּשִׁים עֵגֶל אוֹ שׁוּם מַנְהִיג) after they saw the plagues that Hashem performed in Egypt (אַחֲרֵי שֶׁרָאוּ הַמַּכּוֹת אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה ה׳ בְּמִצְרַיִם), and judgments upon their gods (וּשְׁפָטִים בֵּאלֹהֵיהֶם), and the wonders and miracles they saw at the splitting of the Sea (וְהַמּוֹפְתִים וְהַנִּסִּים שֶׁרָאוּ בְּקְרִיעַת יַם סוּף), and in the war with Amalek (וּבְמִלְחֶמֶת עֲמָלֵק), and in the descent of the manna and the well (וּבְיְרִידַת הַמָּן וּבַבְּאֵר).
And further, how did Yisrael not protest against them? (וְעוֹד, אֵיךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא מָחוּ בְּיָדָם), for they should have killed them and destroyed them from the world (כִּי הָיָה לָהֶם לְהָרְגָם וּלְאַבְּדָם מִן הָעוֹלָם). And it had not been many days since they heard “I am (Anokhi) [Hashem your God]” and “You shall have no other gods” from the mouth of the Almighty If so, how did they incline their ears and become seduced and tested after the counsel of these sinners who endangered their souls? (אִם כֵּן, אֵיךְ הִטּוּ אֶת אָזְנָם וְנִתְפַּתּוּ וְנִסְּתוּ אַחַר עֲצַת הַחוֹטְאִים הָאֵלֶּה בְּנַפְשׁוֹתָם), for their souls desired the flesh of donkeys and their abominations (כִּי בִּבְשַׂר חֲמוֹרִים וּבְשִׁקּוּצֵיהֶם נַפְשָׁם חָפֵצָה).
It is a wonder that Yisrael consented to this evil counsel And we say: the Erev Rav also merited to see the Chariot at the splitting of the Sea (וְנֵאָמֵר, כִּי עֵרֶב רַב גַּם כֵּן זָכוּ לִרְאוֹת הַמֶּרְכָּבָה בְּקְרִיעַת יַם סוּף), at the time when all said, “This is my God and I will glorify Him” (שֶׁבִּזְמַן שֶׁכֻּלָּם אָמְרוּ ״זֶה אֵלִי וְאַנְוֵהוּ). A hint to this is in what our Sages said: “A maidservant saw at the Sea what Yechezkel son of Buzi did not see” (רֶמֶז לָזֶה בְּמַה שֶׁאָמְרוּ רַז״ל: ״רָאֲתָה שִׁפְחָה עַל הַיָּם מַה שֶּׁלֹּא רָאָה יְחֶזְקֵאל בֶּן בּוּזִי). And it says “maidservant” to allude also to the Erev Rav who perceived the Chariot And in the Chariot they saw the four-faced Chayot-one of which was the face of an ox (וּבַמֶּרְכָּבָה רָאוּ פְּנֵי ד׳ חַיּוֹת, וְאֶחָד מֵהֶם פְּנֵי שׁוֹר), and the sole of their feet was “like the sole of a calf’s foot” (וְכַף רַגְלֵיהֶם שֶׁל ד׳ חַיּוֹת ״כְּכַף רֶגֶל עֵגֶל), as in the language “And Hashem blessed you at my feet” (Deuteronomy 33:29) (כִּלְשׁוֹן ״וַיְבָרֶכְךָ ה׳ לְרַגְלִי).
Therefore the Erev Rav came to Yisrael and spoke into their ears (לָכֵן בָּאוּ עֵרֶב רַב אֶצֶל יִשְׂרָאֵל וְדִּבְּרוּ בְּאָזְנֵיהֶם), and they gathered from Yisrael groups and bundles (וְאָסְפוּ מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל אֲגוּדוֹת וַחֲבִילוֹת), and said to them: You already know that the lamb is the minister of Egypt (וְאָמְרוּ לָהֶם: כְּבָר יְדַעְתֶּם שֶׂטָלֶה שַׂרּוֹ שֶׁל מִצְרַיִם), and he is greater than all the ministers Above (וְהוּא גָּדוֹל עַל כָּל שָׂרֵי מַעְלָה), and when we used to worship him, we would make him an image of gold (וּכְשֶׁהָיִינוּ עוֹבְדִים אוֹתוֹ הָיִינוּ עוֹשִׂים לוֹ דְּמוּת שֶׁל זָהָב), and we would place it in a great palace (וְשַׂמְנוּ אוֹתוֹ בְּהֵיכָל גָּדוֹל), and we would bow and offer incense before it (וְהָיִינוּ מִשְׁתַּחֲוִים וּמַקְטִירִים לְפָנָיו), and we succeeded in our works (וְהָיִינוּ מַצְלִיחִים בְּמַעֲשֵׂינוּ), and ruled over many kingdoms (וְהָיִינוּ מוֹשְׁלִים עַל מַמְלָכוֹת רַבּוֹת).
And now that the Holy One Blessed Be He has humbled him (וְעַתָּה שֶׁהקב״ה הִשְׁפִּיל אוֹתוֹ), and destroyed his dominion in order to bring Yisrael out of Egypt (וְשָׁדַד מֶמְשַׁלְתּוֹ כְּדֵי לְהוֹצִיא אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל מִמִּצְרַיִם), we agreed to worship the God of Yisrael (אֲנַחְנוּ הִסְכַּמְנוּ לַעֲבֹד אֶת אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל), and because He has no image (וּמִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵין בּוֹ תְּמוּנָה), we do not know how to direct our thoughts in His service (לֹא יָדַעְנוּ לְכַוֵּן דַּעְתֵּנוּ בַּעֲבוֹדָתוֹ).
Now know that the second to the lamb, which was the firstborn, is the ox Therefore let us make a form for him (לָכֵן נַעֲשֶׂה לוֹ צוּרָה), for now he is the firstborn and esteemed before the Holy One Blessed Be He (כִּי עַתָּה הוּא הַבְּכוֹר וְחָשׁוּב לִפְנֵי הקב״ה), and through him Hashem will bestow good and success upon us (וּבְאֶמְצָעוּתוֹ יַשְׁפִּיעַ עָלֵינוּ הקב״ה טוֹבָה וְהַצְלָחָה). And it has another advantage besides being a foot of the Chariot (וְגַם יֵשׁ לוֹ מַעֲלָה אַחֶרֶת מִלְּבַד הֱיוֹתוֹ רֶגֶל הַמֶּרְכָּבָה): it is one of the four Chayot (אֶחָד שֶׁל ד׳ חַיּוֹת הוּא), and it has a higher status and superiority (וְיֵשׁ לוֹ מַעֲלָה וְיִתְרוֹן) because all four Chayot are sealed with its seal (שֶׁכָּל ד׳ חַיּוֹת הֵן חֲתוּמוֹת בַּחֲתוֹמוֹ), and it is a greater cause than them (וְהוּא סִבָּה גְּדוֹלָה מֵהֶם), as it says, “Like the sole of a calf's foot” (Ezekiel 1:7) (כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר: ״כְּכַף רֶגֶל עֵגֶל). If so, let us ask Aharon to make us a golden image of a bull (אִם כֵּן נְבַקֵּשׁ מֵאַהֲרֹן שֶׁיַּעֲשֶׂה לָנוּ צוּרַת שׁוֹר מִזָּהָב), for he is wise, the disciple of Moshe (שֶׁהוּא חָכָם, תַּלְמִידוֹ שֶׁל מֹשֶׁה), and he knows how to align the hour (וְיוֹדֵעַ לְכַוֵּן הַשָּׁעָה), so that our intention will emerge perfectly into actuality (כְּדֵי שֶׁיֵּצֵא לְפוֹעַל שָׁלֵם כַּוָּנָתֵנוּ).
This is what the verse says, “And the people gathered upon Aharon and said to him, Arise, make us gods…” A form of the upper bull (צוּרַת שׁוֹר שֶׁל מַעְלָה), “who shall go before us” (אֲשֶׁר יֵלְכוּ לְפָנֵינוּ), meaning: when we request something we need (פֵּרוּשׁ: כַּאֲשֶׁר נְבַקֵּשׁ אֵי זֶה דָּבָר אֲשֶׁר אֲנַחְנוּ צְרִיכִים אוֹתוֹ), it will go before us to ask from Hashem that which we require (יֵלֵךְ לְפָנֵינוּ לְבַקֵּשׁ מֵהקב״ה אוֹתָהּ בַּקָּשָׁה שֶׁנִּצְטָרֵךְ לָהּ). And they said, “For this Moshe, the man…” (Exodus 32:1) (וְאָמְרוּ: ״כִּי זֶה מֹשֶׁה הָאִישׁ), meaning: let our request not be displeasing in your eyes that we seek a form (פֵּרוּשׁ: אַל יֵרַע בְּעֵינֶיךָ בַּקָּשָׁתֵנוּ הַזֹּאת שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ מְבַקְּשִׁים דְּמוּת), “This is my God and I will glorify Him” (Exodus 15:2) (״זֶה אֵלִי וְאַנְוֵהוּ״), for in that vision we saw the form of a bull and the sole of a calf’s foot (כִּי לְשָׁם רָאִינוּ צוּרַת שׁוֹר וְכַף רֶגֶל עֵגֶל); it is this that we seek (כָּמוֹ זֶה אֲנַחְנוּ מְבַקְּשִׁים).
Therefore there is a pause between “for this | Moshe” (Exodus 32:1) (לָכֵן יֵשׁ פֶּסֶק בֵּין "כִּי זֶה | מֹשֶׁה), to say: we do not know where Moshe is (לוֹמַר: לֹא יָדַעְנוּ הֵיכָן מֹשֶׁה), for if we knew his location, we would request from him what we now ask from you (כִּי אִלּוּ הָיִינוּ יוֹדְעִים בְּאֵי זֶה מָקוֹם הוּא, מִמֶּנּוּ הָיִינוּ מְבַקְּשִׁים מַה שֶּׁאֲנַחְנוּ מְבַקְּשִׁים מִמְּךָ). This is what the verse says: “For this | Moshe the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt-we do not know what has become of him” (Exodus 32:1) (זֶהוּ שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב: ״כִּי זֶה | מֹשֶׁה הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר הֶעֱלָנוּ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם לֹא יָדַעְנוּ מֶה הָיָה לוֹ).
And with this false claim (וּבַטְּעָנָה הַמְּזוּיֶּפֶת הַזֹּאת), Yisrael were seduced by the counsel of the Erev Rav (נִתְפַּתּוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל לַעֲצַת הָעֵרֶב רַב). And this was the reply of Aharon when Moshe Rabbeinu said to him, “What did this people do to you…?” (Exodus 32:21) (וְזֹאת הָיְתָה תְּשׁוּבָתוֹ שֶׁל אַהֲרֹן כַּאֲשֶׁר אָמַר לוֹ מֹשֶׁה רַבֵּנוּ ״מֶה עָשָׂה לְךָ הָעָם הַזֶּה״ וגו׳), and he replied: “Let not the anger of my lord burn” (Exodus 32:22) (וְהוּא הֵשִׁיב: ״אַל יִחַר אַף אֲדֹנִי), for you know the Erev Rav, that their hearts are evil and obstinate (כִּי אַתָּה יָדַעְתָּ אֶת הָעֵרֶב רַב כִּי לְבָבָם רָע וְקָשֶׁה), and he recounted to him their arguments as we have written (וְסִפֵּר לוֹ טַעֲנוֹתֵיהֶם כַּאֲשֶׁר כָּתַבְנוּ).
Then Moshe saw the people-the Erev Rav-for already their evil hearts were exposed (אָז רָאָה מֹשֶׁה אֶת הָעָם – עֵרֶב רַב – כִּי כְּבָר נִתְפַּרְסֵם רֹעַ לְבָבָם), for Aharon had revealed and publicized it in their disgrace (כִּי אַהֲרֹן גִּלָּהוּ וּפֵרְסָמוֹ לְשִׁמְצָה בְּקָמֵיהֶם עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל), to say: you did this calf (לֵאמֹר: אַתֶּם עֲשִׂיתֶם הָעֵגֶל). For Yisrael have a response that they themselves did not make it And this is already hinted in Shemot Rabbah This is what the verse says: “The ox knows its owner…” (Isaiah 1:3) (זֶהוּ שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב ״יָדַע שׁוֹר קֹנֵהוּ״ וגו׳)-that they asked the calf: who made you? And it replied: the Erev Rav made me
