And regarding this it is said: “Draw near, O nations, to hear; and listen, O peoples…” and it is written, “For the wrath of Hashem is upon all the nations” (Yeshayahu 34:1–2) This wrath is the end of all 'wraths' (זֶה הַקֶּצֶף הוּא סוֹף כָּל הַחֵמוֹת).
For there is wrath that passes; for example, when a certain king becomes angry with a certain province, he chastises it with some discipline, and afterward his anger passes But this anger will be at the end, with utter annihilation for the nations And therefore it says the term “wrath” (ketzef), which is derived from the root “end” (ketz) “And all the host of heaven shall waste away, and the heavens shall be rolled up like a scroll” (Yeshayahu 34:4) ("וְנָמַקוּ כָּל צְבָא הַשָּׁמַיִם וְנִגֹּלוּ כְּסֵפֶר הַשָּׁמָיִם)-this comes to inform us how Sama’el will be seized (בָּא לְהוֹדִיעֵנוּ אֵיךְ יִהְיֶה תָפוּשׂ סַמָּאֵ״ל). And that which he said, “And the heavens shall be rolled up like a scroll” (וּמַה שֶּׁאָמַר ״וְנָגֹלּוּ כַּסֵּפֶר הַשָּׁמַיִם״), means: since Sama’el will be investigated, he will sit in judgment before the Holy One, blessed be He, for all the evil that he did to His children (הַכַּוָּנָה: שֶׁכֵּיוָן שֶׁיִּהְיֶה נֶחְקָר סַמָּאֵ״ל, יֵשֵׁב לְדִין לִפְנֵי הקב״ה עַל כָּל הָרָעָה שֶׁעָשָׂה לְבָנָיו), just as the prince of Egypt stood in judgment (כְּמוֹ שֶׁעָמַד לְדִין שַׂרוֹ שֶׁל מִצְרַיִם). And all the sufferings he caused Israel will be demanded from him (וִיהְיוּ נִתְבָּעוֹת מִמֶּנּוּ כָּל הַצָּרוֹת שֶׁצֵּר לְיִשְׂרָאֵל). And it is said in Sefer Heikhalot: (וְאָמַר בְּסֵפֶר הֵיכָלוֹת)
Rabbi Yishmael said, that day was the fifth day of the week (אָמַר רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל: אוֹתוֹ הַיּוֹם חֲמִישִׁי בַּשַּׁבָּת הָיָה), when hard tidings came from the great city of Rome (כְּשֶׁבָּאָה שְׁמוּעָה קָשָׁה מֵעִיר גְּדוֹלָה שֶׁל רוֹמִי), saying: four men from the nobles of Israel shall be taken (לוֹמַר: יִתָּפְשׂוּ אַרְבָּעָה אֲנָשִׁים מֵאֲבִירֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל)-Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel, and Rabbi Yishmael ben Elisha, and Rabbi Yehudah ben Bava, and Rabbi Elazar ben Dama (רַבָּן שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן גַּמְלִיאֵל וְרַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל בֶּן אֱלִישָׁע וְרַבִּי יְהוּדָה בֶּן בָּבָא וְרַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן דַּמָּא), and eight thousand Torah scholars [from Jerusalem] as ransom for them (וּשְׁמוֹנַת אֲלָפִים תַּלְמִידֵי חֲכָמִים [מִירוּשָׁלַיִם] פִּדְיוֹן שֶׁלָּהֶם).
And when Rabbi Nechunya ben HaKanah saw this decree (וּכְשֶׁרָאָה רַבִּי נְחוּנְיָא בֶּן הַקָּנָה גְּזֵרָה זוֹ), he stood and brought me down to the Merkavah (עָמַד וְהוֹרִידַנִי לַמֶּרְכָּבָה), and I pleaded before the Sar haPanim (וּבִקַּשְׁתִּי מִשַּׂר הַפָּנִים), and he said to me: Ten [judges] wrote this in the heavenly Beit Din (וְאָמַר לִי: עֲשָׂרָה כָּתְבוּ בֵית דִּין שֶׁל מַעְלָה), and gave it to Sama’el, the prince of Rome (וְנָתְנוּ לְסַמָּאֵ״ל שַׂרוֹ שֶׁל רוֹמִי), saying: “Go and destroy from the nobles of Israel every fine portion-thigh and shoulder” (לוֹמַר: לֵךְ וְהַכְחֵד מֵאֲבִירֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל כָּל נִתַּח טוֹב יָרֵךְ וְכָתֵף), to fulfill the decree: “He who kidnaps a man and sells him… shall surely be put to death” (Shemot 21:16) ("וּגְנֵב אִישׁ וּמְכָרוֹ וְנִמְצָא בְיָדוֹ מוֹת יוּמָת).
And it is assured to him that vengeance will be taken from him (וּשְׁמוּרָה לוֹ לְהִנָּקֵם מִמֶּנּוּ), until the day comes when Hashem will punish the host of the high ones on high (עַד שֶׁיָּבֹא הַיּוֹם שֶׁיִּפְקֹד ה׳ עַל צְבָא הַמָּרוֹם בַּמָּרוֹם), when he will be slaughtered and cast down, he and all his heavenly ministers, like goats and sheep on Yom Kippur (שֶׁיִּהְיֶה נִשְׁחָט וּמוּטָל הוּא וְכָל שָׂרֵי מַלְכוּיו בַּמָּרוֹם כִּגְדָיִים וְכַכְּבָשִׂים שֶׁל יוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים). And when the Holy One Blessed Be He will find this fitting against Sama’el He will remove his power, as it says further on: “And all their host shall wither, as a leaf withers from the vine” (Yeshayahu 34:4)
And because the Holy One Blessed Be He will remove the power of the prince, evil will be drawn upon Edom (וּמִצַּד שֶׁיָּסִיר הקב״ה כֹּחַ הַשַּׂר יִימָשֵׁךְ הָרָע לְאֱדוֹם), as it says: “For My sword is sated in the heavens; behold, upon Edom it shall descend” (ibid. And that which it says “and a great slaughter in the land of Edom” (ibid. 34:6) (וּמַה שֶּׁאָמַר "וְטֶבַח גָּדוֹל בְּאֶרֶץ אֱדוֹם), alludes to Shabbat haGadol, as we said (לְרַמֵּז עַל שַׁבָּת הַגָּדוֹל כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ). And that which it says “and wild oxen shall go down with them, and bulls with mighty ones” (ibid. 34:7) (וּמַה שֶּׁאָמַר "וְיָרְדוּ רְאֵמִים עִמָּם וּפָרִים עִם אַבִּירִים), is an allusion to Mashiach ben Yosef, about whom it is said: “His firstborn bull-glory is his, and the horns of a wild ox are his horns” (Devarim 33:17) (רֶמֶז לְמָשִׁיחַ בֶּן יוֹסֵף, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר עָלָיו "בְּכוֹר שׁוֹרוֹ הָדָר לוֹ וְקַרְנֵי רְאֵם קַרְנָיו).
And besides the reason we explained above, why the vengeance upon Edom must come through the seed of Yosef (וּמִלְּבַד הַטַּעַם שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ לְמַעְלָה לָמָּה הָיְתָה נַקְמַת אֱדוֹם עַל יְדֵי זֶרַע יוֹסֵף), there is another reason, and it is this (יֵשׁ טַעַם אַחֵר, וְהוּא זֶה): for this evil that came to those Ten Martyrs was on account of the sale of Yosef (כִּי זֶה הָרָע שֶׁנִּמְשַׁךְ לָאֵלֶּה עֲשָׂרָה הֲרוּגֵי מַלְכוּת הוּא בְּסִיבַת מְכִירַת יוֹסֵף), and Yosef did not desire that these righteous ones endure that suffering (וִיוֹסֵף לֹא הָיָה רוֹצֶה שֶׁאֵלּוּ הַצַּדִּיקִים יַעַבְרוּ זֶה הַצַּעַר), and because of that, he tormented his brothers so greatly in Egypt (שֶׁבִּשְׁבִיל זֶה צִעֵר לְאֶחָיו כָּל כָּךְ בְּמִצְרַיִם), so that they would not need to return their souls again in reincarnation in those righteous ones (כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יִהְיוּ צְרִיכִים לְהַחְזִיר נִשְׁמָתָם בְּגִלְגּוּל בְּאֵלּוּ הַצַּדִּיקִים).
If so, it is fitting that the vengeance come by the seed of Yosef (אִם כֵּן, רָאוּי שֶׁתִּהְיֶה הַנָּקָם מִיָּד זֶרַע יוֹסֵף), for it is by his cause that all of this came upon them (הוֹאִיל וּבְסִיבָתוֹ נִמְשַׁךְ לָהֶם כָּל זֶה). And this vengeance will occur when the Holy One Blessed Be He subdues the power of the prince of Esav (וְזוֹ הַנְּקָמָה תִּהְיֶה כְּשֶׁיְּשַׁדֵּד הקב״ה כֹּחַ שַׂרוֹ שֶׁל עֵשָׂו), as it says in the teaching we cited above: “that Eliyahu slaughters him” (כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר בַּמַּאֲמָר שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ לְמַעְלָה, "שֶׁאֵלִיָּהוּ שׁוֹחֲטוֹ). And it says at the end of that teaching: “From there it is said: Who is this that comes from Edom” (Yeshayahu 63:1) (וְאָמַר בְּסוֹף הַמַּאֲמָר "מִשָּׁם אוֹמֵר: מִי זֶה בָּא מֵאֱדוֹם), to inform us that the Holy One Blessed Be He Himself will seize the prince of Edom (לְהוֹדִיעֵנוּ שֶׁהקב״ה בְּעַצְמוֹ יִתְפֹּשׂ שַׂרוֹ שֶׁל אֱדוֹם). And now I will explain to you how all this is hinted at in the verse
Know that all the lands of the world have a corresponding position above And therefore, when astrologers want to pronounce judgment concerning a particular city, they must know in which climate it lies (וְלָכֵן צְרִיכִין הַתּוֹכְנִים כְּשֶׁרוֹצִים לְהוֹצִיא אֵי זֶה מִשְׁפָּט עַל אֵי זוֹ עִיר לֵידַע בְּאֵי זֶה אֶקְלִים הִיא), to determine the place that corresponds to it in the heavens (לֵידַע הַמָּקוֹם שֶׁמְּכוּוָּן כְּנֶגְדּוֹ בַּשָּׁמַיִם).
If so, that which it says that the Holy One Blessed Be He will be revealed in Rome (אִם כֵּן, מַה שֶּׁאָמַר שֶׁהקב״ה עָתִיד לְהִיגָּלוֹת בְּרוֹמִי), the intention is not that He will be revealed in Rome itself (אֵין הַכַּוָּנָה שֶׁיֵּגָלֶה בְּרוֹמִי עַצְמָהּ), but in that supernal place which corresponds to it, where the power of Sama’el resides (אֶלָּא בְּאוֹתוֹ הַמָּקוֹם הַמְּכוּוָּן לְמַעְלָה כְּנֶגְדָּהּ, שֶׁשָּׁם כֹּחַ סַמָּאֵ״ל). And the Holy One Blessed Be He is destined to don garments of vengeance, to execute vengeance upon Edom and to remove, He Himself, the power of the prince of Edom
