Sefer HaMefo’ar
The wise Kabbalist, the Pious one, Rabbi Shlomo Molcho—may his light shine, said (אָמַר הַחָכָם הַמְּקוּבָּל הַחָסִיד הָרַב שְׁלֹמֹה מוֹלְכוֹ נֵרוֹ יָאִיר):
For the sake of my brothers and friends, the beloved ones who dwell in Salonika, (לְמַעַן אַחַי וְרֵעַי הַנֶּאֱהָבִים הַיּוֹשְׁבִים בְּשַׁאֲלוֹנִיקִי) who request of me to send them some sort of discourse according to the way of Truth (Derech Ha-Emet) (הַדּוֹרְשִׁים מִמֶּנִּי לִשְׁלֹחַ לָהֶם אֵי זֶה דְּרוּשׁ עַל דֶּרֶךְ הָאֱמֶת) or some commentary on a certain parashah or statement of our Rabbis, of blessed memory, (אוֹ אֵי זֶה פֵּרוּשׁ עַל שׁוּם פָּרָשָׁה אוֹ מַאֲמָר מֵרַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה) and in order to fulfill their question and their request, (וּכְדֵי לְמַלֵּאות שְׁאֵלָתָם וּבַקָּשָׁתָם) I saw fit to write for them this composition (רָאִיתִי לִכְתֹּב לָהֶם הַחִבּוּר הַזֶּה).
Even though it is not hidden from me how short is my attainment and understanding, (אַף כִּי לֹא נֶעְלַם מִמֶּנִּי קֹצֶר הַשְּׂגָּתִי וּבִינָתִי) for my sins have driven me away from being joined to the heritage of Hashem, (כִּי עֲוֹנוֹתַי גֵּרְשׁוּנִי מֵהִסְתַּפֵּחַ בְּנַחֲלַת ה׳) and I was raised among the nations- (וְנִתְגַּדַּלְתִּי בֵּין הַגּוֹיִים) yet with all this, I have trusted in the kindness of the Most High, that He will guide me in the proper path (עִם כָּל זֹאת בָּטַחְתִּי בְּחֶסֶד עֶלְיוֹן יַדְרִיכֵנִי בַּדֶּרֶךְ הַנְּכוֹנָה).
And if there be found in me some error, (וְאִם יִמָּצֵא בִּי אֵי זֶה שְׁגִיאָה) I cast myself down before all who behold it (הִנְנִי מִתְנַפֵּל לִפְנֵי כָּל רוֹאֶיהָ) let them judge me for merit, (יְדִינֵנִי לְכַף זְכוּת) for in truth, it is not my intention to glorify myself by this, (כִּי הָאֱמֶת שֶׁאֵין כַּוָּנָתִי לְהִתְגַּדֵּל בָּזֶה) only to fulfill the will of my pleasant companions (כִּי אִם לְמַלֵּאות רְצוֹן חֲבֵרַי הַנְּעִימִים) and to give thanks, to praise, and to glorify the God who answers me in every trouble, (וּלְהוֹדוֹת, לְשַׁבֵּחַ, לְפָאֵר לָאֵל הָעוֹנֶה אוֹתִי מִכָּל צָרָה) who enlightens my eyes with the light of His holy Torah, (הַמֵּאִיר עֵינַי בְּאוֹר תוֹרָתוֹ הַקְּדוֹשָׁה) more precious than gold and fine gold (יְקָרָה מִזָּהָב וּמִפָּז).
I rejoice at Your word, like one who finds great spoil.
I will never forget Your precepts, for through them You have given me life.
How I love Your Torah! All day it is my meditation.
Give me understanding, that I may keep Your Torah and observe it with all my heart.
How sweet are Your words to my palate, more than honey to my mouth.
Were it not for Your Torah being my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.
My soul has longed for Your salvation; for Your word I have hoped.
I will speak of Your testimonies before kings and will not be ashamed.
