Once Kudsha Berikh Hu saw thus He was aroused from within the Tree of Life (אַתְעַר מִגּוֹ אִילָנָא דְחַיֵּי), a breath of wind blew (נְשִׁיבָא דְרוּחָא), and struck against another tree (וּבָטַשׁ בְּאִילָנָא אָחֳרָא), and another side of good was aroused (וְאַתְעַר סִטְרָא אָחֳרָא דְטוֹב), and the day was sanctified (וְאִתְקַדַּשׁ יוֹמָא). For the health of bodies and the arousal of spirits is on the side of good on this night (דְּהָא בְּרִיאוּ דְּגוּפִין וְאִתְעָרוּ דְרוּחִין בְּסִטְרָא דְטוֹב אִיהוּ בְּהַאי לֵילְיָא), and not on the other side (וְלָא בְּסִטְרָא אָחֳרָא). And were the other side to come first on this night, before the side of good came first (וְאִלְמָלֵא אַקְדִּים סִטְרָא אָחֳרָא בְּהַאי לֵילְיָא עַד דְּלָא יַקְדִּים סִטְרָא דְטוֹב), the world could not endure before them even one moment (לָא יָכִיל עָלְמָא לְמֵיקַם קַמַּיְיהוּ אֲפִילּוּ רִגְעָא חָדָא). But the healing—Kudsha Berikh Hu preceded, leaping before the sanctification of the day (אֲבָל אַסְוָותָא אַקְדִּים קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא דְּדָלִיג קַמֵּיהּ קִדּוּשָׁא דְיוֹמָא), and He came before the sitra achra (וְאַקְדִּים קַמֵּי סִטְרָא אָחֳרָא), and the world was established (וְאִתְקְיַּים עָלְמָא). And that which the sitra achra thought to build in the world in order to strengthen itself (וּמַה דְּחֲשִׁיב סִטְרָא אָחֳרָא לְאִתְבְּנֵי בְּעָלְמָא לְאִתְתַּקְּפָא), was built on this night by the side of good (אִתְבְּנֵי בְּהַאי לֵילְיָא סִטְרָא דְטוֹב), and it was strengthened (וְאִתְתַּקַּף), and bodies and holy spirits were built on this night from the side of good (וְאִתְבְּנוּן גּוּפִין וְרוּחִין קַדִּישִׁין בְּהַאי לֵילְיָא מִסִּטְרָא דְטוֹב). And therefore, the union-time of the sages who know this is from Shabbat to Shabbat For then that other side saw that as much as it intended to act (דְּהָא כְּדֵין חָמַאת דָּא סִטְרָא אָחֳרָא דְּכַמָּה דְאִיהִי חֲשִׁיבַת לְמֶעְבַּד), the side of holiness acted (עֲבִידֵי (עביד) סִטְרָא דִקְדוּשָׁה). It goes and wanders with many troops and its aspects (אָזְלָא וּמְשַׁטְּטָא בְּכַמָּה חַיָּילִין וְסִטְרִין דִּילָהּ), and it sees all those who are engaging in intimacy upon their beds with exposure of their bodies to the light of the lamp (וְחָמַאת כָּל אִנּוּן דְּקָא מְשַׁמְשֵׁי עַרְסַיְיהוּ בְּגִלּוּיָא דְגוּפֵיהוֹן לִנְהוֹרָא דְבוּצִינָא), and all those children who go forth from there are epileptics (וְכָל אִנּוּן בְּנִין דְּנָפְקִין מִתַּמָּן הֲווּ נִכְפִין), upon whom spirits from that other side rest (דְּשָׁרוּ עֲלַיְיהוּ רוּחִין מֵהַהוּא סִטְרָא אָחֳרָא). And those are naked spirits of the guilty, who are called mazikin (וְאִנּוּן רוּחִין עַרְטִילָאִין דְּחַיָּיבַיָא דְּאִקְרוּן מַזִּיקִין), and Lilith dwells among them and slays them (וְשָׁרִיאַת בְּהוּ לִילִי״ת וּקְטִילַת לוֹן). Once the day is sanctified and holiness rules over the world (כֵּיוָן דְּאִתְקַדַּשׁ יוֹמָא וְשָׁלְטָא קְדוּשָׁה עַל עָלְמָא), that other side diminishes itself (הַהוּא סִטְרָא אָחֳרָא אַזְעִירַת גַּרְמָהּ), and is concealed the whole night of Shabbat and the day of Shabbat (וְאִטַּמְרַת כָּל לֵילְיָא דְשַׁבַּתָּא וְיוֹמָא דְשַׁבַּתָּא), except for Asimon and all his band (בַּר מִן אַסִימוֹ״ן וְכָל כַּת דִּילֵיהּ) who go upon the lamps in secret to look upon exposed intercourses (דְּאַזְלֵי עַל שְׁרַגֵּי בִּטְמִירוּ לְמֶחמֵי עַל גִּלּוּיֵי דְּשִׁמּוּשָׁא), and afterward they are concealed within the female of the Great Abyss (וּלְבָתַר אִטַּמְּרוּן גּוֹ נוּקְבָא דִּתְהוֹמָא רַבָּא).

Once Shabbat departs (כֵּיוָן דְּנָפַק שַׁבַּתָּא), many troops and encampments fly and wander in the world (כַּמָּה חַיָּילִין וּמַשִּׁרְיָין פָּרְחִין וּמְשַׁטְּטִין בְּעָלְמָא), and because of this the Song of Plagues was instituted so they shall not rule over the holy people (וְעַל דָּא אִתְקַן שִׁיר שֶׁל פְּגָעִים דְּלָא יִשְׁלְטוּן עַל עַמָּא קַדִּישָׁא). To whatever place they roam on that night (לְאָן אֲתַר מְשַׁטְּטֵי בְּהַהוּא לֵילְיָא), when they go out in haste and think to rule in the world over the holy people (כַּד נַפְקֵי בִּבְהִילוּ וְחָשְׁבִין לְשַׁלְּטָאָה בְּעָלְמָא עַל עַמָּא קַדִּישָׁא), and they see them in prayer and saying this song (וְחָמָאן לוֹן בִּצְלוֹתָא וְאָמְרִין שִׁירָתָא דָא), and with the singing they make havdalah in prayer and make havdalah over the cup (וּבְשֵׁירוּתָא מַבְדְּלֵי בִּצְלוֹתָא וּמַבְדְּלֵי עַל הַכּוֹס), they fly from there and go and wander and arrive into the wilderness (פַּרְחֵי מִתַּמָּן וְאָזְלֵי וּמְשָׁטְטֵי וּמָטָאן לְגוֹ מַדְבְּרָא). May the Merciful One save us from them and from the evil side

Our Sages, of blessed memory, said (אָמְרוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ ז״ל): Three there are who bring evil upon themselves (תְּלָתָא אִנּוּן גַּרְמִין בִּישָׁא לְגַרְמַיְיהוּ). One: whoever curses himself (חַד מָאן דְּלַיִּיט גַּרְמֵיהּ). Second: whoever throws bread or crumbs in which there is an olive’s measure Third: whoever kindles a lamp at the going-out of Shabbat before Yisrael reaches the side of holiness (תְּלִיתָאָה מָאן דְּאוֹקִיד שְׁרַגָּא בְּמִפְקָא דְּשַׁבַּתָּא עַד לָא מָטוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל לְקִדּוּשָׁא דְסִדְרָא), for he causes the fire of Gehinnom to be kindled with this fire before its time (דְּגָרִים לְנוּרָא דְּגֵיהִנֹּם לְאַדְלָקָא בְּהַאי נוּרָא עַד לָא מָטָא זִמְנַיְיהוּ).

For there is one place in Gehinnom for those who profane Sabbaths (דְּחַד דּוּכְתָּא אִית בַּגִּיהִנָּם לְאִנּוּן דְּקָא מְחַלְּלֵי שַׁבָּתוֹת), and those who are punished in Gehinnom curse the one who kindled the lamp before its time (וְאִנּוּן דַּעֲנוּשִׁין בַּגֵיהִנֹּם לַייטִין לֵיהּ לְהַהוּא דְּאוֹקִיד שְׁרַגָּא עַד לָא מָטָא זִמְנֵיהּ), and they say to him: “Behold, Hashem will hurl you—hurling, O man, etc.” (Isaiah 22), “He will surely wind you—winding, like a ball, to a land of wide spaces.” (Isaiah 22). Because it is not fitting (בְּגִין דְּלָאו יָאוֹת) to kindle fire (הוּא לְאַדְלָקָא נוּרָא) when Shabbat departs (כַּד נָפִיק שַׁבַּתָּא) until Yisrael make havdalah in prayer (עַד דְּמַבְדְּלֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בִּצְלוֹתָא) and make havdalah over the cup (וּמַבְדְּלֵי עַל כַּסָּא).

Because until that time it is Shabbat (בְּגִין דְּעַד הַהוּא זִמְנָא שַׁבָּת הוּא), and the holiness of Shabbat rules over us (וּקְדוּשָׁה דְשַׁבַּת שָׁלִיט עֲלָנָא). And at the time that they make havdalah over the cup (וּבְשַׁעֲתָא דְמַבְדִּילִין עַל כַּסָּא), all those troops (כָּל אִנּוּן חַיָּילִין) and all those camps (וְכָל אִנּוּן מַשִּׁרְיָין) that are appointed over the weekdays (דְּאִתְמְנָן עַל יוֹמֵי דְחוֹל), each and every one sits (כָּל חַד וְחַד יָתִיב) in his place and his service that he was appointed over (לְאַתְרֵיהּ וּפוּלְחָנֵיהּ דְּאִתְמְנֵי עֲלֵיהּ).

Because when Shabbat enters (בְּגִין דְּכַד עָאל שַׁבַּתָּא) and the day is sanctified (וְאִתְקַדַּשׁ יוֹמָא), holiness is aroused (קֹדֶשׁ אִתְעַר) and rules in the world (וְשַׁלִּיט בְּעָלְמָא). And weekday is removed from its dominion (וְחוֹל אִתְעַדֵּי מִשּׁוּלְטָנוּתָא דִילֵיהּ), until the time that Shabbat departs (עַד שַׁעֲתָא דְּנָפִיק שַׁבַּתָּא), they do not return to their places (לָא תַיְיבִין לְאַתְרַיְיהוּ). And even though Shabbat departs (וְאַף עַל גַּב דְּנָפִיק שַׁבַּתָּא), they do not return to their places (לָא תַיְיבִין לְאַתְרַייהוּ) until the time Yisrael say (עַד זִמְנָא דְאָמְרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל): Blessed are You Hashem, Who separates between holy and weekday (בָּרוּך אַתָּה יְיָ הַמַּבְדִּיל בֵּין קֹדֶשׁ לְחוֹל). Then holiness departs (כְּדֵין קֹדֶשׁ אִסְתַּלַּק), and the camps appointed over the weekdays (וּמַשִּׁרְיָין דְּאִתְמַנִיאוּ עַל יוֹמֵי דְחוֹל) are aroused (מִתְעָרִין) and return to their places (וְתַיְיבִין לְאַתְרַייהוּ), each and every one (כָּל חַד וְחַד) to his charge that he was commanded over (עַל מַטְרֵיהּ דְּאִתְפְּקַד עֲלֵיהּ). And with all this they do not rule (וְעִם כָּל דָּא לָא שָׁלְטִין) until they shine from the secret of the lamp (עַד דִּיהוֹן נְהוֹרִין מֵרָזָא דִשְׁרַגָא). And all of them are called the luminaries of fire (וְכֻלְהוֹן אִקְרוּן מְאוֹרֵי הָאֵשׁ), because from the light of the fire of plague (בְּגִין דמנהורא דנורא דנגדא). Some say: from the secret of the pillar of fire And from the foundation of fire they all come (וּמִיסוֹדָא דְנוּרָא אָתְיָאן כֻּלְהוּ), and rule over the lower world (וְשָׁלְטִין עַל עַלְמָא תַּתָּאָה). And all this is when a man kindles a lamp (וְכָל דָּא כַּד בַּר נָשׁ אַדְלִיק שְׁרַגָּא) before Yisrael complete the side of holiness (עַד לָא שְׁלִימוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל קִדּוּשָׁא דְסִדְרָא). But if he waits until they complete the side of holiness (אֲבָל אִי אִיהוּ מַמְתִּין עַד דְּיַשְׁלִימוּ קִדּוּשָׁא דְסִדְרָא), those guilty ones of Gehinnom (אִנּוּן חַיָּיבִין דְּגֵיהִנֹּם) justify upon him the judgment of Kudsha Berikh Hu (מַצְדִיקִין עֲלַיְיהוּ דִינָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא). And the congregation establishes upon that man (וְאִנּוּן מְקַיְּימֵי עַל הַהוּא בַּר נָשׁ) all the blessings that the community says (כָּל בִּרְכָאן דְּקָא אָמְרֵי צִבּוּרָא): “And may the Elohim give you from the dew of the heavens” (Bereshit 27) (וְיִתֶּן לְךָ הָאֱלֹהִים מִטַּל הַשָּׁמַיִם), “Blessed are you in the city and blessed are you in the field” (Deuteronomy 28) (בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה בָּעִיר וּבָרוּךְ אַתָּה בַּשָּׂדֶה וְגו׳). “Happy is one who is wise to the poor; on the day of evil Hashem will deliver him” (Psalms 41) On the day of evil, it is asked: what is ‘on the day of evil’?

The day that that evil one rules to take his soul “Happy is one who is wise to the poor”—this is the sick man upon his bed, to heal him from his sins before Kudsha Berikh Hu Another matter: this is the day of judgment resting upon the world, and he is saved from it, as it is said: “On the day of evil Hashem will deliver him” (Psalms 41) The day that judgment is handed over to that evil one to rule over the world
