“And Elohim made the two luminaries” (Bereshit 1) This is a luminary and this is a luminary Therefore, those lights that ascend above are called luminaries of light And those lights that descend below are called luminaries of fire (וְאִנּוּן נְהוֹרִין דְּנָחֲתוּ לְתַתָּא אִקְרוּן מְאוֹרֵי אֵשׁ), which are the levels below and rule all the weekdays (דְּאִנּוּן דַּרְגִּין לְתַתָּא וְשָׁלְטֵי כָּל יוֹמוֹי דְּחוֹל). And because of this, when Shabbat departs, one blesses over the candle, for permission was given to them to rule
The fingers of a person are the aspects of the levels and mysteries above (אֶצְבְּעָן דְּבַר נָשׁ אִנּוּן סִתְרָא דְּדַרְגִּין וְרָזִין דִּלְעֵילָא), and in them are inner and outer (וְאִית בְּהוּ פְּנִימָאִין וַאֲחוֹרַיִם). The outer are for the outside, and they are the hint to the nails of the fingers And because of this, permission is given to look at the nails on Motza’ei Shabbat, for they shine from that candle and they shine from that fire to rule These may be seen, but the inner fingers are not permitted to be seen by that candle, for they shine from above and are called the inner faces And this is the secret: “And you shall see My back, but My face shall not be seen” (Exodus 33) That a person should not gaze on Motza’ei Shabbat at the inner fingers at the time he says: “Creator of the lights of the fire” (דְּלָא יִסְתַּכַּל בַּר נָשׁ בְּמוֹצָאֵי שַׁבָּת בְּאֶצְבְּעָן לְגוֹ בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּאָמַר בּוֹרֵא מְאוֹרֵי הָאֵשׁ). “And you shall see My back” (Shabbat 33) (וְרָאִיתָ אֶת אֲחוֹרָי)—these are the outer faces hinted at in the nails (אִלֵּין פָּנִים דִּלְבַר דְּאִתְרְמִיזוּ בְּטוּפְרֵי). “But My face shall not be seen” (Shabbat 33) (וּפָנַי לֹא יֵרָאוּ)—these are the inner fingers (אִלֵּין אֶצְבְּעָן לְגוֹ). These rule on Shabbat, and those rule in the weekdays And on the day of Shabbat, Kudsha Berikh Hu rules alone, in those inner faces, upon His Throne of Glory, and all are included in Him, and the dominion is His And because of this, rest is found for all the worlds And the inheritance of this day is given to the holy nation, who are called “one nation in the earth” (וְיַרְתִין יְרוּתָא דְיוֹמָא דָא עַמָּא קַדִּישָׁא דְּאִקְרוּן עַמָּא חַד בְּאַרְעָא). Luminaries of light are from the side of the right, which is the primordial light that was on the first day For on the day of Shabbat, those luminaries of light shine alone and rule And from them all shine below And when Shabbat departs, the luminaries of light that are hidden and not revealed are concealed And the luminaries of fire rule, each one in its place When do they rule? On Motza’ei Shabbat until the coming of the day of Shabbat And because of this, it is necessary to shine from that candle on Motza’ei Shabbat “And the Chayot ran and returned” (Ezekiel 1) For the eye is not able to rule over them, because they are running and returning The Chayot that are revealed are those within which that Ofan stands And who is this? Metatron, who is great and precious above all the others Some say: above the other hosts (נ״א: חֵילִין). And above—five hundred parsah The Chayot that are concealed are those hidden beneath the two supernal letters that are concealed Yod–Heh, letters ruling over Vav–Heh These bond with those And that concealed One of all concealed, unknown entirely, rules over all and rides over all The Chayot that are revealed are those below, under those supernal concealed ones, and they shine from them, and take because of them
The supernal Chayot are all included (חַיּוֹת עִלָּאִין כֻּלְהוּ כְּלִילָן) in the firmament of the heavens (בִּרְקִיעַ הַשָּׁמָיִם). And upon them it is written: “Let there be luminaries in the firmament of the heavens, and let them be for luminaries in the firmament of the heavens” (Bereshit 1) All depend on that firmament of the heavens The firmament above the Chayot—this is that which is written: “And the likeness over the heads of the Chayah was a firmament, like the color of the terrible ice” (Ezekiel 1) This is the (Kadmon) Primordial Some say: the (Kadma’ah) Primordial Hashem For from there onward, there is no one able to gaze or to know What is the reason? Because it is concealed in thought And the thought of Kudsha Berikh Hu is the concealed supernal concealment The thought of a person in all the world—Some say: cannot—cling or know it Words that depend on supernal thought—no one is able to cling to them Thought itself—how much more so Within thought, who is it that makes imaginations? For there is no permission to ask, much less to know
Ein Sof has no Reshimu at all, and no question attaches to it, and no thought to gaze upon it at all From the concealment of concealments, from the beginning of the descent of Ein Sof, there shone a subtle radiance, unknown Concealed in concealment (Some say: in Reshimu) like the sharpness of a needle A hidden secret of thought, not known, until radiance spread from it In a place where there are Reshimot of all the letters From there they go forth (מִתַּמָּן נַפְקָן). At the Head of all (בְּרֵישׁ כֹּלָּא). Aleph is the head and the end of all levels The Reshimu, in which all levels were inscribed And it is called only one To show that even though it contains many forms, it is only one Surely it is the letter upon which supernal and lower worlds depend The beginning of Aleph is the concealment of the secret of supernal thought And that spreading forth of that supernal firmament—all is concealed in that head For when Aleph goes forth from that firmament, it goes forth in the likeness of the secret of the head of thought In the middle part of Aleph, six levels are included, the secret of all the supernal concealed Chayot Some say: that ascend (נ״א: דְּסָלִיקַן). Some say: that depend (נ״א: דְּתַלְיָין) within thought (מִגּוֹ מַחֲשָׁבָה).
One Nehiru shines and is hidden For this is the radiance of the letter Aleph of Bereshit Some say: the letter Bet of Bereshit “In the heat of the day, when Abraham sat at the entrance of the tent” (Bereshit 18) (חוֹם הַיּוֹם דְּהֲוָה אַבְרָהָם יָתִיב פֶּתַח הָאֹהֶל)—this is the opening from below to above (דְּאִיהִי פִּתְחָא מִתַּתָּא לְעֵילָא). And the heat of the day shone upon that opening and was radiant from there
A second Nehiru goes to become dark at the time of the turning of evening This is the secret of the prayer of Yitzchak, to rectify this level, as it is written: “And Yitzchak went out to meditate in the field toward evening” (Bereshit 24) The contemplation of evening and all darknesses are to him At this turning of evening, Ya‘akov looked—Some say: was tested—by that ruler of Esav
