Rabbi Shimon opened and said (פָּתַח רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן וְאָמַר): (Devarim 4) “But you who cleave unto Hashem your Elohim, etc.” Who is a holy nation like Yisrael (מַאן עַמָּא קַדִּישָׁא כְּיִשְׂרָאֵל), as it is written of them (Devarim 33) “Happy are you, Yisrael, who is like you” (דִּכְתִיב בֹּהוּ אַשְׁרֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל מִי כָמוֹךָ), and it is written (Shemot 15) “Who is like You among the mighty, Hashem” (דִּכְתִיב מִי כָמֹכָה בָּאֵלִם יְיָ). Because their cleaving is in the holy Name in this world And in the World to Come, even more than here For there they are not separated from Him, from that bundle in which the Righteous are bound This is what is written: “But you who cleave unto Hashem” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב וְאַתֶּם הַדְּבֵקִים בַּיְיָ)—and it is not written “to Hashem,” but rather “in Hashem” literally (וְלָא כְּתִיב הַדְּבֵקִים לַיְיָ, אֶלָּא בַּיְיָ מַמָּשׁ).
It was taught (תָּאנָא): when from the precious supernal beard of the Holy Atika (כַּד נָחִית מִן דִּיקְנָא יַקִּירָא עִלָּאָה, דְּעַתִּיקָא קַדִּישָׁא), hidden and concealed from all (סָתִים וְטָמִיר מִכֹּלָּא), flows the oil of holy abundance (מִשְׁחָא דִּרְבוּת קַדִּישָׁא), [it flows] to the beard of Ze’ir Anpin (לְדִיקְנָא דִּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין). Then his beard is rectified in nine adornments And at the time when the precious beard of Atika of Atikin shines into this beard of Ze’ir Anpin (וּבְשַׁעֲתָא דְּנָהִיר דִּיקְנָא יַקִּירָא דְּעַתִּיקָא דְּעַתִּיקִין, בְּהַאי דִּיקְנָא דִּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין), there flow thirteen fountains of supernal oil into this beard (נַגְדִּין תְּלֵיסַר מַבּוּעִין דְּמִשְׁחָא עִלָּאָה, בְּהַאי דִּיקְנָא). And there are found in it twenty-two adornments And from it flow twenty-two letters—Some say: of the Orayta (וּמִנֵּיהּ נַגְדִּין, עֶשְׂרִין וּתְרֵין אַתְוָון [נ״א: דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא])—of the holy Name (דִּשְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא).
Some say: and in the World to Come (נ״א: וּבְעָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי), because their cleaving is in the holy Name (מִשּׁוּם דְּאִתְדַּבְּקוּתָא דִּילְהוֹן הוּא בִּשְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא), in this world and in the World to Come, more than here (בְּעָלְמָא דֵּין וּבְעָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי יַתִּיר מֵהָכָא). For there they are not separated from that bundle of life (דְּהָתָם לָא מִתְפָּרְשִׁין מֵהַהוּא צְרוֹרָא דְּחַיֵּי), in which the Righteous are bound (דְּצְרוּרִין בֵּיהּ צַדִּיקַיָּא). This is what is written (Devarim 4): “But you who cleave in Hashem” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, וְאַתֶּם הַדְּבֵקִים בַּיְיָ), in Hashem literally (בַּיְיָ מַמָּשׁ). Of you it is written (Devarim 33) “Happy are you, Yisrael, who is like you, a people saved in Hashem” (עָלַיְיכוּ כְּתִיב, אַשְׁרֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל מִי כָמוֹךָ עַם נוֹשַׁע בַּיְיָ). And it is written (Shemot 15) “Who is like You among the mighty, Hashem” (וְכָתִיב, מִי כָמֹכָה בָּאֵלִם יְיָ).
Now set your hearts to honor the King (הַשְׁתָּא אִתְכַּוְּנוּ דַּעְתָּא לְאוֹקוֹרֵי לְמַלְכָּא), and to honor the glory of the holy beard of the King (וּלְאוֹקִיר יְקָרָא דְּדִיקְנָא קַדִּישָׁא דְּמַלְכָּא). It was taught (תַּנָא): the supernal beard is rectified (מִתְתַּקֵּן דִּיקְנָא עִלָּאָה), the holy beard, in nine adornments (דִּיקְנָא קַדִּישָׁא בְּט׳ תִּקּוּנִין). And this is the beard of Ze’ir Anpin And when it descends from the precious supernal beard of the Holy Atika (וְכַד נָחֵית מִן דִּיקְנָא יַקִּירָא עִלָּאָה דְּעַתִּיקָא קַדִּישָׁא), into this beard of Ze’ir Anpin (בְּהַאי דִּיקְנָא דִּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין), there flow thirteen fountains of supernal oil (נַגְדִּין י״ג מַבּוּעִין דְּמִשְׁחָא עִלָּאָה). And there are found in it twenty-two adornments And from it flow twenty-two letters of the holy Name
And if you say the beard is not found (וְאִם תֹּאמַר דִּיקְנָא לָא אִשְׁתְּכַח), and Shlomo only said (Shir haShirim 5) “His cheeks” (וְלֹא אָמַר שְׁלֹמֹה אֶלָּא לְחָיָיו), and did not call it “beard” (וְלֹא קָארֵי דִּיקְנָא)—thus it was taught in the Concealed Book (אֶלָּא הָכִי תָּאנָא בִּצְנִיעוּתָא דְּסִפְרָא): whatever is sealed, hidden, not mentioned, not revealed (כָּל מַה דְּאַטְמָר וְגָנִיז, וְלָא אִדְכַּר וְלָא אִתְגַּלְיָיא), that word is supernal and precious above all (הַהוּא מִלָּה הֲוִי עִלָּאָה וְיַקִּירָא מִכֹּלָּא). And because of this it is concealed and hidden And the beard, since it is praise, perfection, and preciousness of the whole partzuf Scripture concealed it and did not reveal
And it was taught (וְתָאנָא): this beard, which is the perfection of the partzuf and the beauty of Ze’ir Anpin (הַאי דִּיקְנָא דְּאִיהוּ שְׁלֵימוּתָא דְּפַרְצוּפָא וְשַׁפִּירוּתָא דִּזְעֵיר אַפִּין), goes forth from his ears, descends, rises, and covers in fragrance of perfume (נָפִיק מֵאוּדְנוֹי, וְנָחִית וְסָלִיק וְחָפֵי, בְּתַקְרוֹבָא דְּבוּסְמָא). What is fragrance of perfume As it is said (Shir haShirim 5) “His cheeks are like beds of perfume” (כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר, לְחָיָיו כַּעֲרוּגַת הַבּוֹשֶׂם). Not “beds” but “bed” (וְלֹא עֲרוּגוֹת). In nine adornments this beard of Ze’ir Anpin is rectified With black hairs of the beard (בְּשַׂעֲרֵי [דְּדִיקְנָא] אוּכָמֵי), it is rectified in beautiful adornment (מִתַּתְקְנָא בְּתִקּוּנָא שַׁפִּיר). Like a mighty warrior, fair to see (כְּגִבָּר תַּקִּיף, שַׁפִּיר לְמֵחֱזֵי), as it is written (Shir haShirim 5) “As a young man among the cedars” (דִּכְתִּיב, בָּחוּר כָּאֲרָזִים).
The first adornment (תִּקּוּנָא קַדְמָאָה): hair is rectified above (מְתַּתְקָּן שַׂעֲרָא מִלְּעֵילָּא), and that spark goes forth from the Hard spark p1-35(וְנָפִיק הַהוּא נִיצוֹצָא בּוּצִינָא דְּקַרְדִּינוּתָא), and goes out from the pure air (וְנָפִיק מִכְּלָלָא דַּאֲוִירָא דַּכְיָא), and strikes beneath the hair of the head (וּבָטַשׁ בִּתְחוֹת שַׂעֲרָא דְּרֵישָׁא), beneath the hooks above the ears (מִתְּחוֹת קוֹצִין דְּעַל אוּדְנִין). And it descends before the opening of the ears, threads upon threads, until the head of the mouth
The second adornment (תִּקּוּנָא תִּנְיָינָא): hair goes forth and ascends from the head of the mouth (נָפִיק שַׂעֲרָא, וְסָלִיק מֵרֵישָׁא דְּפוּמָא), until the other side of the opening of the mouth (עַד רֵישָׁא אַחֲרָא דְּפִתְחָא דְּפוּמָא). And it descends beneath the mouth, until the other side, threads upon threads, in fair adornment
The third adornment (תִּקּוּנָא תְּלִיתָאָה): from the middle beneath the nose (מֵאֶמְצָעִיתָא דִּתְחוֹת חוֹטָמָא), beneath two nostrils (מִתְּחוֹת תְּרֵין נוּקְבִין), goes forth one path (נָפִיק חַד אָרְחָא). Small strong hairs fill that path (וְשַׂעֲרִין זְעִירִין תַּקִּיפִין, מַלְיָין לְהַהוּא אָרְחָא), and the other hairs fill from this side and from that side, surrounding that path (וּשְׁאַר שַׂעֲרִין מַלְיָין מֵהַאי גִּיסָא, וּמֵהַאי גִּיסָא, סוֹחֲרָנֵיהּ דְּהַהוּא אָרְחָא). The path is not seen below at all (וְאָרְחָא לָא אִתְחֲזֵי לְתַתָּא כְּלַל), but that path above descends to the top of the lips, and there the path sinks (אֶלָּא הַהוּא אָרְחָא דִּלְעֵילָּא, דְּנָחִית עַד רֵישָׁא דְּשִׂפְוָותָן, וְתַמָּן שְׁקִיעָא הַהוּא אָרְחָא).
The fourth adornment (תִּקּוּנָא רְבִיעָאָה): hair goes forth, is rectified, rises, and covers above in the fragrance of perfume (נָפִיק שַׂעֲרָא, וְאִתְתָּקַּן, וְסָלִיק וְחָפֵּי בְּעִלְעוֹי דְּתִקְרוֹבָא דְּבוּסְמָא).
The fifth adornment (תִּקּוּנָא חֲמִשָׁאָה): hair is parted, and two apples are seen (פָּסִיק שַׂעֲרָא, וְאִתְחַזְיָין תְּרֵין תַּפּוּחִין), here and here (מִכָּאן וּמִכָּאן), red like a red rose (סוּמָקָן כְּהַאי וַרְדָא סוּמָקָא). And they blaze into two hundred and seventy worlds that blaze from there—Some say: from them
The sixth adornment (תִּקּוּנָא שְׁתִיתָאָה): a hair goes forth like one thread in the surrounding of the beard (נָפִק שַׂעֲרָא כְּחַד חוּטָא בְּסַחֲרָנֵיהּ דְּדִיקְנָא), and hangs until the head of the belly, but does not descend to the navel (וְתַּלְיָין עַד רֵישָׁא דְּמֵעוֹי, וְלָא נָחִית עַד טַבּוּרָא).
The seventh adornment (תִּקּוּנָא שְׁבִיעָאָה): hairs do not hang on the mouth (דְּלָא תַּלְיָין שַׂעְרֵי עַל פּוּמָא), and the mouth is exposed from all sides (וּפוּמָא אִתְפְּנֵי מִכָּל סִטְרוֹי). And the hairs sit in adornment surrounding it
The eighth adornment (תִּקּוּנָא תְּמִינָאָה): hairs descend beneath the beard, covering the jugular, which is not seen (דְּנַחְתִּין שַׂעְרֵי בִּתְחוֹת דִּיקְנָא, דִּמְחַפְּיָין קְדָלָא, דְּלָא אִתְחַזְיָא). All the hairs are thin, threads upon threads, filling from all sides
The ninth adornment (תִּקּוּנָא תְּשִׁיעָאָה): the hairs intermingle with those (מִתְעָרְבִין שַׂעֲרֵי עִם אִינּוּן) that are joined—Some say: that are drawn (דְּמִתְחַבְּרָן [נ״א: אִתְמַשְׁכַּן])—all the hairs in a supernal balance (שַׂעְרֵי כֻּלְּהוּ בְּשִׁקּוּלָא מְעַלְּיָיא). Some say: in a fullness (נ״א: מְלֵיָּא). Until—Some say: with—those hairs that hang All in a beautiful balance (כֻּלְּהוּ בְּשִׁקּוּלָא שַׁפִּיר), like one mighty warrior, masters of victorious battles (כְּחַד גִּבָּר תַּקִּיף, מָארֵי נָצַח קְרָבִין).
From these nine adornments (בְּתִשְׁעָה תִּקּוּנִין אִלֵּין), flow and go forth nine fountains of the supernal anointing (נַגְדִּין וְנָפְקִין ט׳ מַבּוּעִין דִּמְשַׁח רְבוּת דִּלְעֵילָּא). And from that anointing flow to all those below These nine adornments are found in this beard And with the completion of the adornments of this beard (וּבִשְׁלֵימוּת תִּקּוּנָא דְּדִיקְנָא דָּא), the man below is called a mighty warrior (אִתְקְרֵי [בַּר נָשׁ לְתַתָּא] גִּבָּר תַּקִּיף). For whoever beholds the beard established in its order (דְּכָל מַאן דְּחָמֵי דִּיקְנָא קַיְּימָא בְּקִיּוּמֵיהּ), upon him depends strong Gevurah (תַּלְיָיא בֵּיהּ גְּבוּרָה תַּקִיפָא). Until here, the adornments of the supernal beard of Ze’ir Anpin
