The first adornment (תִּקּוּנָא קַדְמָאָה): hair is rectified from above (מְתַּתְקָּן שַׂעֲרָא מֵעֵילָּא), and goes forth before the opening of the ears (וְנָפִיק מִקַּמֵּי פִּתְחָא דְּאוּדְנִין), beneath the hooks that hang on the ears (מִתְּחוֹת קוֹצֵי דְּתַּלְיָין עַל אוּדְנִין). And the hairs descend, thread upon thread, until the top of the mouth
It was taught (תָּאנָא): all these threads of the beard (כָּל אִלֵּין נִימִין דִּבְדִיקְנָא) are stronger than all threads of the hooks of the hairs of the head (תַּקִּיפִין יַתִּיר מִכָּל נִימִין דְּקוֹצִין דְּשַׂעְרֵי דְּרֵישָׁא). And the hairs of the head are long and bent And these are not long And the hairs of the head, some are weak and some are strong And at the time when the white hairs of Atik Yomin are drawn into the hairs of Ze’ir Anpin (וּבְשַׁעֲתָא דְּאִתְמַשְּׁכָן שַׂעְרֵי חִוָּורֵי דְּעַתִּיק יוֹמִין, לְשַׂעְרֵי דִּזְעֵיר אַפִּין), it is written (Mishlei 1) “Wisdoms cry aloud outside” (כְּתִיב, חָכְמוֹת בַּחוּץ תָּרֹנָּה). What is “outside” (מַאי בַּחוּץ)? In this Ze’ir Anpin (בְּהַאי זְעֵיר אַפִּין), where two brains are joined (דְּמִתְחַבְּרַן תְּרֵי מוֹחֵי).
Two brains? Do you think so (תְּרֵי מוֹחֵי סַלְּקָא דַּעְתָּךְ), Rather say four brains (אֶלָּא אֵימָא אַרְבַּע מוֹחֵי). Three brains that are in Ze’ir Anpin (תְּלַת מוֹחֵי דַּהֲווֹ בִּזְעֵיר אַפִּין), found in the three cavities of the skull of the head (וְאִשְׁתְּכָחוּ בִּתְלַת חַלָלֵי דְּגוּלְגַּלְתָּא דְּרֵישָׁא). And one brain rests in its order (וְחַד מוֹחָא שָׁקִיט עַל בּוּרְיֵיהּ), including all three brains (דְּכָלִיל כָּל תְּלַת מוֹחֵי). From it is drawn complete extension, weighed in the white hairs, to this Ze’ir Anpin, to the three brains in it And four brains are found in this Ze’ir Anpin
Because of this were completed the four sections written in the tefillin In them is included the holy Name of Atik Yomin, Atika of Atikin, and Ze’ir Anpin This is the completeness of the holy Name As it is written (Devarim 28) “And all the nations of the earth shall see that the Name of Hashem is called upon you, and they shall fear you” (דִּכְתִיב, וְרָאוּ כָל עַמֵּי הָאָרֶץ כִּי שֵׁם יְיָ נִקְרָא עָלֶיךָ, וַיִּרְאוּ מִמֶּךָּ). The Name of Hashem, the Name of Hashem literally, which are the four compartments of the tefillin (שֵׁם יְיָ. And because of this “Wisdoms cry aloud outside” (וּבְגִין כָּךְ חָכְמוֹת בַּחוּץ תָּרֹנָּה). For here they are found (דְּהָכָא מִשְׁתַּכְּחִין). For Atika of Atikin, hidden of all hidden (דְּהָא עַתִּיקָא דְּעַתִּיקִין סְתִימָא דִּסְתִּימִין), is not found and its wisdom is not destined to be revealed (לָא אִשְׁתְּכַח וְלָא זַמִּין חָכְמְתָא דִּילֵיהּ). Because there is a wisdom hidden of all, and it is not spread out And because four brains are joined in this Ze’ir Anpin (וּבְגִין דְּאִתְחַבָּרוּ אַרְבָּעָה מוֹחִין בְּהַאי זְעֵיר אַפִּין), four fountains are drawn from it to four limbs (אִתְמַשְּׁכָן אַרְבַּע מַבּוּעִין מִנֵּיהּ לְאַרְבַּע עִיבָר). And they are spread out from one fountain that goes forth from all of them And because of this they are four
And it was taught (וְתָאנָא): this wisdom that is included in four (הַאי חָכְמְתָא דְּאִתְכְּלִילָא בְּאַרְבַּע), is drawn into these hairs that hang thread upon thread (אִתְמַשְּׁכָא בְּהָנֵי שַׂעְרֵי דְּאִינּוּן תַּלְיָין תִּלִּין עַל תִּלִּין). Some say: he is (נ״א: הוּא). And all are hard and strong And they are drawn and extended, each one to its side And thousands upon thousands, myriads of myriads hang from them, without number This is what is written (Shir haShirim 5) “His locks are curled” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב קְווּצּוֹתָיו תַּלְתַּלִּים), heaps upon heaps (תִּלֵי תִּלִּים). And all are hard and strong to be joined, like strong flint, like strong rock Until they make openings and fountains beneath the hair, and strong fountains go forth to every limb and to every side And because these hairs are black and dark, it is written (Iyov 12) “He uncovers deep things out of darkness and brings to light the shadow of death” (וּבְגִין דְּהָנֵי שַׂעֲרֵי אוּכָמֵי וַחֲשׁוֹכָן כְּתִיב מְגַלֶּה עֲמוּקוֹת מִנִּי חֹשֶׁךְ וַיּוֹצֵא לָאוֹר צַלְמָוֶת). And it was taught (וְתָנָא): these hairs of the beard are stronger than the other hairs of the head (הָנֵי שַׂעְרֵי דְּדִיקְנָא תַּקִּיפִין מִשְּׁאָר שַׂעְרֵי דְּרֵישָׁא), because these alone are distinct and found (מִשּׁוּם דְּהָנֵי בִּלְחוֹדַיְיהוּ מִתְפָּרְשָׁן וּמִשְׁתַּכְחָן), and they are strong in their ways (וְאִינּוּן תַּקִּיפִין בְּאוֹרְחַיְיהוּ). Why are they strong (אֲמַאי תַּקִּיפִין)?
If you say because all are judgment— not so For in these adornments are found mercy and judgment And at the time when the thirteen fountains of anointing rivers descend, all of these are mercy Rather it was taught (אֶלָּא תָּאנָא): all these hairs of the beard are strong (כָּל הָנֵי שַׂעְרֵי דְּדִיקְנָא כֻּלְּהוּ תַּקִּיפִין). What is the reason (מַאי טַעְמָא)? All those of mercy need to be strong to subdue judgment And all those that are judgment, behold they are strong And in any case they need to be strong from two sides When the world needs mercy, mercy is strong and prevails over judgment And when it needs judgment, judgment is strong and prevails over mercy And because of this they need to be strong from two sides For when mercy is desired, the hairs that are mercy stand, and it is seen—Some say: united—that the beard is in those hairs, and all is mercy And when judgment is desired, the beard is seen in those hairs, and all is established in the beard And when the holy white beard is revealed, all of these and all of those shine and are washed, like one washed in a deep river from what was in it And all are established in mercy, and no judgment is found And all these nine, when they flow together as one river, all are washed in mercy
