Come and see (וְתָּא חֲזֵי), on this day because of you (יוֹמָא דֵּין בְּגִינָךְ), fifty crowns were given to Rabbi Pinchas ben Ya’ir, your father-in-law (אִתְעַטָּרוּ חַמְשִׁין כִּתְרִין לְרִבִּי פִּנְחָס בֶּן יָאִיר חָמוּךְ). And I went with him through all those rivers of the mountains of pure balsam (וַאֲנָא אֲזִילְנָא עִמֵּיהּ בְּכָל אִינּוּן נַהֲרֵי דְּטוּרֵי דְּאֲפַרְסְמוֹנָא דַּכְיָא), and he clarified his place and was rectified (וְהוּא בָּרִיר דּוּכְתֵּיהּ, וְאִתְתָּקַּן). Some say: “and I too saw that it was clarified…”

He said to him (אָמַר לֵיהּ): “The Righteous are bound in a bundle of crowns (קְטוּרִין צַדִּיקַיָּיא בְּקַרְטוּפָא דְּעִטְרִין), on new moons, on festivals, and on Shabbatot (בְּרֵישׁ יַרְחֵי וּבִזְמַנֵּי וְשַׁבָּתֵי), more than on all other days (יַתִּיר מִכָּל שְׁאַר יוֹמִין).”

He said to him (אָמַר לֵיהּ): “And so with all those below, as it is written: ‘And it shall be that from one new moon to another, and from one Shabbat to another…’ (וְהָיָה מִדֵּי חֹדֶשׁ בְּחָדְשׁוֹ וּמִדֵּי שַׁבָּת בְּשַׁבַּתוֹ וְגוֹ׳) (Isaiah 66). If these come, how much more so the Righteous (אִי אִלֵּין אַתְיָין, כָּל שֶׁכֵּן צַדִּיקַיָּיא). ‘From one new moon to another’—why (מִדֵּי חֹדֶשׁ בְּחָדְשׁוֹ, לָמָּה)? Because the Patriarchs, are crowned [within] the Holy Chariot (מִשּׁוּם דְּמִתְעַטְּרֵי אֲבָהָתָא רְתִיכָא קַדִּישָׁא). ‘And from one Shabbat to another’—because the seventh is crowned above all the six days (וּמִדֵּי שַׁבָּת בְּשַׁבַּתוֹ, דְּמִתְעַטָּר שְׁבִיעָאָה דְּכָל אִינּוּן שִׁיתָא יוֹמִין), as it is written: ‘And Elohim blessed the seventh day…’ (וַיְבָרֶךְ אֱלֹהִים אֶת יוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי וְגוֹ׳) (Bereshit 2).

And you are, Rabbi Shimon (וְאַנְתְּ הוּא רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן), the seventh of the six (שְׁבִיעָאָה דְּשִׁיתָא), who shall be crowned and sanctified more than all (תְּהֵא מִתְעַטָּר וּמִתְקַּדָּשׁ יַתִּיר מִכֹּלָּא). And the three delights that are found in the seventh (וּתְלַת עִדּוּנִין דְּמִשְׁתַּכְחִין בִּשְׁבִיעָאָה), these friends, the Righteous, are destined to delight in because of you in the World to Come (זְמִינִין חַבְרַיָּיא אִלֵּין צַדִּיקַיָּיא לְאִתְעַדְּנָא בְּגִינָךְ לְעָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי). As it is written: “And you shall call the Shabbat a delight, the holy of Hashem, honored” (וְקָרָאתָ לְשַׁבָּת עֹנֶג, לִקְדוֹשׁ יְיָ מְכוּבָּד) (Isaiah 58). Who is ‘the holy of Hashem’ (מַאן הוּא קְדוֹשׁ יְיָ)? This is Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai (דָּא רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן יוֹחָאי), who is called ‘honored’ in this world and in the World to Come p1-36(דְּאִקְרֵי מְכוּבָּד בְּעָלְמָא דֵּין, וּבְעָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי).

Rabbi Yitzchak opened and said (רִבִּי יִצְחָק פָּתַח וְאָמַר): “But the Chesed of Hashem is from world to world upon those who fear Him, and His righteousness upon children’s children” (וְחֶסֶד יְיָ מֵעוֹלָם וְעַד עוֹלָם עַל יְרֵאָיו, וְצִדְקָתוֹ לִבְנֵי בָנִים) (Psalms 103). How great is the Yirah before Kudsha Berikh Hu (כַּמָה גְּדוֹלָה הַיִּרְאָה לִפְנֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא), for Yirah included humility (שֶׁבִּכְלַל הַיִּרְאָה עֲנָוָה), and in humility is included piety (וּבִכְלַל הָעֲנָוָה חֲסִידוּת). It follows that whoever has fear of sin, has them all But whoever is not in fear of Heaven, has neither humility nor piety

Ra‘aya Meheimna

The commandment, the twenty-second (פִּקּוּדָא כ״ב), is for the Kohen to bless the people every day (דָּא לְבָרְכָא כַּהֲנָא יַת עַמָּא בְּכָל יוֹמָא), with the raising of the fingers (בִּזְקִיפוּ דְּאֶצְּבְּעָן). And to bless the blessing every day (וּלְבָרְכָא בִּרְכָתָא בְּכָל יוֹמָא), so that blessings may be found above and below (לְאִשְׁתַּכְּחָא בִּרְכָאן עֵילָּא וְתַתָּא). For the fingers stand in the supernal mystery, five opposite five (דְּהָא אֶצְּבָּעָאן קַיְימָן בְּרָזָא עִלָּאָה, חָמֵשׁ גוֹ חָמֵשׁ)—five of the right, and five of the left (חָמֵשׁ דִּימִינָא, וְחָמֵשׁ דִּשְׂמָאלָא).

The five of the right are greater in praise than those of the left (חָמֵשׁ דִּימִינָא, אִינּוּן שְׁבָחָא יְתֵירָא עַל אִינּוּן דִּשְׂמָאלָא), because the right has greater praise than the left (בְּגִין, דְּהָא יְמִינָא אִית לֵיהּ שְׁבָחָא יְתֵירָא עַל שְׂמָאלָא). And because of this, in the blessing where the Kohen blesses the people (וְעַל דָּא בְּבִרְכָתָא דְּקָא בָּרִיךְ כַּהֲנָא יַת עַמָּא), he must raise the right over the left (אִצְּטְרִיךְ לְזַקְפָא יְמִינָא עַל שְׂמָאלָא), and look with a good eye (וּלְעַיְינָא בְּעֵינָא טָבָא). And when the Kohen spreads his hands (וְכַד פָּרִישׂ יְדוֹי כַּהֲנָא), the Shekhinta rests upon those fingers (שְׁכִינְתָּא שַׁרְיָא עַל אִינּוּן אֶצְּבְּעָן).

For Kudsha Berikh Hu consents with the Kohen in those blessings And Yisrael are blessed from two sides, above and below (וְיִשְׂרָאֵל מִתְבָּרְכִין מִתְּרֵין סִטְרִין מֵעֵילָּא וְתַתָּא)—from above, the Shekhinta that rests upon those fingers (מֵעֵילָּא, שְׁכִינְתָּא דְּשַׁרְיָא עַל אִינּוּן אֶצְּבְּעָן), and the Kohen who blesses (וְכַהֲנָא דְּקָא מְבָרֵךְ).

Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי): the words that are done here arouse words above (מִלִּין דְּקָא עַבְדֵי, מִתְעָרִין מִלִּין לְעֵילָּא). In this manner, when the fingers of the Kohen are spread below (כְּגַוְונָא דָּא בִּפְרִישׁוּ דְּאֶצְּבְּעָן דְּכַהֲנָא לְתַתָּא), the Shekhinta is aroused to come and dwell upon us (אִתְּעָרַת שְׁכִינְתָּא לְמֵיתֵי וּלְשַׁרְיָא עֲלָן). And so there are many matters in the world (וְכֵן כַּמָה מִלִּין אִינּוּן בְּעָלְמָא), where actions below arouse supernal matters (דְּמִתְעֲרִין מִלִּין לְעֵילָּא). For by arousal below, another power is aroused above And we have established this in many places

And this is the reason of the lulav (וְהַיְינוּ טַעֲמָא דְּלוּלָב), and this is the reason of the shofar (וְהַיְינוּ טַעֲמָא דְּשׁוֹפָר). And so it is with these ten fingers (וּכְמָּה אִינּוּן בְּהַאי גַּוְונָא עֶשֶׂר אֶצְּבָּעָן): they arouse the Shekhinta to dwell upon them (מִתְעָרֵי שְׁכִינְתָּא לְשַׁרְיָיא עָלַיְיהוּ). And they arouse ten other supernal levels to shine And all is at once, in one time And because of this (וְעַל דָּא), it is forbidden for a man to raise his fingers in elevation for no purpose (אָסִיר לֵיהּ לְבַר נָשׁ לְזַקְפָא אֶצְּבְּעָן בִּזְקִיפוּ לְמַגָּנָא), but only in prayer, and in blessings, and in the Name of Kudsha Berikh Hu (אֶלָּא בִּצְּלוֹתָא, וּבְבִרְכָּאן, וּבִשְׁמָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא). And we have already established (וְהָא אוֹקִימְנָא), that they are an arousal of the holy Name, and the secret of faith (דְּאִינּוּן אַתְּעֲרוּ דִּשְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא, וְרָזָא דִּמְהֵימְנוּתָא). The raising of the fingers (זְקִיפוּ דְּאֶצְּבְּעָן): in that raising of theirs are appointed ten rulers (מְמָנָן בְּהַהוּא זְקִיפוּ דִּלְהוֹן, עֲשְׂרָה שַׁלִּיטִין), as has been established (כְּמָה דְּאוּקְמוּהָ). And the Kohen must bless with a good eye (וְכַהֲנָא בָּעֵי לְבָרְכָא בְּעֵינָא טָבָא), through the gaze of the Shekhinta, as it has been said (בְּאִסְתַּכְּמוּתָא דִּשְׁכִינְתָּא, כְּמָה דְּאִתְּמַר).

At that moment when this blessing goes forth from the mouth of the Kohen (בְּהַהִיא שַׁעֲתָא דְּבִרְכְתָא דָּא נָפְקָא מִפּוּמֵיהּ דְּכַהֲנָא), those sixty letters go forth (אִינּוּן שִׁתִּין אַתְוָון נָפְקִין), and fly in the firmament (וְטָסִין בִּרְקִיעָא), and sixty mighty ones are appointed, one over each letter (וּמְמָנָן שִׁתִּין רַבְרְבִין, עַל כָּל אָת וְאָת). And all of them stand over all these blessings Why sixty letters in these blessings Because Yisrael are sixty myriads (בְּגִין דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל שִׁתִּין רִבּוֹא אִינּוּן), and the mystery of the sixty myriads stands in the world (וְרָזָא דְּשִׁתִּין רִבּוֹא קַיְימִין בְּעָלְמָא), and each one is a myriad (וְכָל חַד וְחַד אִיהוּ חַד רִבּוֹא).

The Holy Name that goes forth from this (שְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא דְּנָפְקָא מֵהַאי), ascends above until that supernal throne (סַלְּקָא לְעֵילָּא, עַד הַהוּא כֻּרְסְיָיא דִּלְעֵילָּא). And all is the supernal Shekhinta and the lower Shekhinta (וְכֹלָּא שְׁכִינְתָּא עִלָּאָה, וּשְׁכִינְתָּא דִּלְתַּתָּא), that stand with the Kohen in those blessings (אוֹדָן בְּכַהֲנָא בְּאִינּוּן בִּרְכָאָן), and all those sixty appointees (וְכָל אִינּוּן שִׁתִּין מְמָנָן). And because of this it is written: “And they shall put My Name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them” (וְעַל דָּא כְּתִיב, וְשָׂמוּ אֶת שְׁמִי עַל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַאֲנִי אֲבָרַכֵם) (Numbers 6). And then Kudsha Berikh Hu blesses Israel (Here ends) (ע״כ).

It was taught (תָּאנָא): one who goes forth from Yirah and is clothed in humility (מִי שֶׁיָּצָא מִן הַיִּרְאָה, וְנִתְלָבַּשׁ בַּעֲנָוָה), humility is greater (עֲנָוָה עָדִיף), and is included in all (וְנִכְלַל בְּכֻלְּהוּ). This is what is written: “The result of humility is Yirat Hashem” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, עֵקֶב עֲנָוָה יִרְאַת יְיָ) (Proverbs 22). Whoever possesses fear of Heaven, merits humility Whoever possesses humility, merits piety (כָּל מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ עֲנָוָה, זוֹכֶה לַחֲסִידוּת). And whoever possesses fear of Heaven, merits them all To humility, as it is written: “The result of humility is Yirat Hashem” (לַעֲנָוָה, דִּכְתִּיב עֵקֶב עֲנָוָה יִרְאַת יְיָ) (Proverbs 22). To piety, as it is written: “And the Chesed of Hashem is from everlasting to everlasting upon those who fear Him” (לַחֲסִידוּת, דִּכְתִּיב וְחֶסֶד יְיָ מֵעוֹלָם וְעַד עוֹלָם עַל יְרֵאָיו) (Psalms 103).
