Daf 202a (דַּף ר״ב ע״א)
And this garden (וְהַאי גִּנְתָּא), is transformed and becomes a spring that waters them (אִתְהַפָּךְ וַהֲוִי מַעְיָין דְּאַשְׁקֵי לוֹן), a well of living waters (בְּאֵר מַיִם חַיִּים), when needed it becomes a spring (כַּד אִצְטְרִיךְ הֲוִי מַעְיָין), and when needed it becomes a well (וְכַד אִצְטְרִיךְ הֲוִי בְּאֵר), what is the difference between this and that (מַה בֵּין הַאי לְהַאי). It is not the same (לָא דָּאמֵי), when the waters flow from themselves (כַּד אִתְמַשְּׁכוּן מַיָּא מִאֵלַיְיהוּ), as when they are drawn to water (לְכַד שַׁאֲבִין מַיָּא לְאַשְׁקָאָה). And “flowing from Lebanon” (וְנוֹזְלִים מִן לְבָנוֹן), what is “flowing” (מַאי נוֹזְלִים). These flowings return to the spring (אִלֵּין נוֹזְלִים אָהַדְרוּ לְמַעְיָין), some say: all of them (ס״א דכלהו), when waters well forth and flow in drops above (כַּד נַבְעִין מַיִין וְנוֹזְלִים טִפִּין לְּעֵילָּא), some say: from above (ס״א מלעילא), these one after another (אִלֵּין בָּתַר אִלֵּין), sweet waters (מַיִין מְתִיקָן), that the soul goes after them (דְּנַפְשָׁא אַזְלָא אֲבַּתְרַיְיהוּ). So too are these five sources (כַּךְ אִינּוּן חָמֵשׁ מְקוֹרִין), that go forth from Lebanon (דְּנָפְקוּ מִן לְבָנוֹן), they become flowings in this spring (אִתְעָבִידוּ נוֹזְלִים בְּהַאי מַעְיָין).
So Kudsha Berikh Hu (כַּךְ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא) wrought for us a miracle in this place (רָחִישׁ לָן נִיסָא בַּאֲתָר דָּא), we call upon this spring this verse (קָרֵינָּא עַל מַעְיָינָא דָּא קְרָא דָּא). (Some say: What is “flowings” (ס״א מאי נוזלים). These are the five sources that go forth from Lebanon above (אלין חמש מקורין דנפקו מן לבנון לעילא), they became flowings that when they returned to the spring (אתעבידו נוזלים דכד אהדרו למעיין), waters well forth and flow in drops, these one after another, sweet waters (נבעין מיין ונוזלים טפין אלין בתר אלין מיין מתיקן), that the soul goes after them (דנפשא אזלא אבתרייהו). So Kudsha Berikh Hu wrought for us a miracle in this place (כך קודשא בריך הוא רחיש לן ניסא באתר דא), with this spring, and upon this spring we call this verse (בהאי מעיין ועל מעיינא דא קרינא קרא דא).
Then he opened and said (תּוּ פָּתַח וְאָמַר) “When you besiege a city many days, to make war against it, to capture it…” (כִּי תָצוּר אֶל עִיר יָמִים רַבִּים לְהִלָּחֵם עָלֶיהָ לְתָפְשָׂה וְגוֹ׳) (Devarim 20). How good are these paths and ways of Orayta (כַמָה טָבִין אִינּוּן אָרְחִין וּשְׁבִילִין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא), for behold in every single word (דְּהָא בְּכָל מִלָּה וּמִלָּה), there are many counsels (אִית כַּמָּה עֵיטִין), how good they are for mankind (כַמָה טָבִין לִבְנֵי נָשָׁא), how many pearls that shine to every side (כַמָה מַרְגְּלָאן דְּקָא מְנַהֲרָן לְכָל סְטָר), and there is not a single word in Orayta (וְלֵית לָךְ מִלָּה בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא), that does not contain many illuminations shining to every side (דְּלֵית בָּהּ כַּמָה בּוּצִינִין מְנַהֲרָן לְכָל סְטָר). This verse is according to its plain meaning (הַאי קְרָא אִיהוּ כְּפוּם פְּשָׁטֵיהּ). And it has according to its Midrashic meaning (וְאִית בֵּיהּ כְּפוּם מִדְרָשֵׁיהּ). And it has supernal wisdom (וְאִית בֵּיהּ חָכְמְתָא עִלָּאָה), to be enlightened for one who needs it (לְאִזְדַּהֲרָא לְמַאן דְּאִצְטְרִיךְ).
Fortunate is his portion who toils in Orayta continually (זַכָּאָה חוּלָקֵיהּ מַאן דְּאִשְׁתְּדַּל בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא תָּדִיר). One who toils in it (מַאן דְּאִשְׁתְּדַל בָּהּ), what is written about him (מַה כְּתִיב בֵּיהּ), “But his delight is in the Torah of Hashem, and in His Torah he meditates day and night, and he shall be like a tree” (כִּי אִם בְּתוֹרַת יְיָ חֶפְצוֹ וּבְתוֹרָתוֹ יֶהְגֶּה יוֹמָם וָלָיְלָה, וְהָיָה כְּעֵץ) (Psalms 1). Why is this written adjacent to that (אֲמַאי דָּא סָמִיךְ לְדָא).
Rather, one who toils in Orayta day and night (אֶלָּא מַאן דְּאִשְׁתְּדַל בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא יוֹמָם וָלָיְלָה), should not be like a withered tree (לָא לִיהֱוִי כְּאָעָא יְבֵישָׁא), but rather like a tree planted by streams of water (אֶלָּא כְּעֵץ שָׁתוּל עַל פַּלְגֵי מָיִם). As a tree has roots (מַה אִילָן אִית בֵּיהּ שָׁרָשִׁין), and it has bark (וְאִית בֵּיהּ קְלִיפִּין), and it has pith (וְאִית בֵּיהּ מוֹחָא), and it has branches (וְאִית בֵּיהּ עַנְפִין), and it has leaves (וְאִית בֵּיהּ טַרְפִּין), and it has blossoms (וְאִית בֵּיהּ פַּרְחִין), and it has fruit (וְאִית בֵּיהּ אִיבָּא). These seven kinds (שִׁבְעַת זִינִין אִלֵּין), ascend to seventeen, to seventy (סַלְּקִין לְשִׁבְעָה עָשָׂר, לְשִׁבְעִין).
So too the words of Orayta (אוּף מִלִּין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא), in them there is the plain meaning of the verse (אִית בְּהוּ פְּשָׁטָא דִּקְרָא). The homiletical teaching (דְּרָשָׁא). The allusion (רֶמֶז), that hints at wisdom (דְּקָא רָמִיז חָכְמְתָא). Gematriot (גִימַטְרִיָיאוֹת). Hidden secrets (רָזִין טְמִירִין). Concealed mysteries, one above another (רָזִין סְתִימִין אִלֵּין עַל אִלֵּין). Disqualified and valid (פָּסוּל וְכָשֵׁר). Impure and pure (טָמֵא וְטָהוֹר). Forbidden and permitted (אִיסוּר וְהֶיתֵּר). From here and onward, the branches spread to every side (מִכָּאן וּלְהָלְאָה, מִתְפַּשְּׁטָאָן עַנְפִין לְכָל סְטָר). And “he shall be like a tree” indeed (וְהָיָה כְּעֵץ וַדַּאי), and if not (וְאִי לָאו), he is not wise in wisdom (לָאו אִיהוּ חָכָם בְּחָכְמְתָא).
Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי), how beloved are those who toil in Orayta before Kudsha Berikh Hu (כַמָה חֲבִיבִין אִינּוּן דְּמִשְׁתַּדְּלֵי בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא קַמֵּי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא), for even at a time when judgment hangs in the world (דְּאֲפִילּוּ בְּזִמְנָא דְּדִינָא תַּלְיָא בְּעָלְמָא), and permission is given to the destroyer to destroy (וְאִתְיְיהִיב רְשׁוּ לִמְחַבְּלָא לְחַבְּלָא), Kudsha Berikh Hu commands him concerning them (קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא פָּקִיד לֵיהּ עִלָוַויְיהוּ), upon those who toil in Orayta (עַל אִינּוּן דְּקָא מִשְׁתַּדְּלֵי בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא). And thus Kudsha Berikh Hu said to him (וְהָכִי אָמַר לֵיהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא), “When you besiege a city” (כִּי תָצוּר אֶל עִיר), because of the many sins that they sinned before Me (בְּגִין חוֹבֵיהוֹן סַגִּיאִין דְּחָטָּאן לְקַמָּאי), and they became liable in judgment (וְאִתְחַיְּיבוּ בְּדִינָא).
“Many days” (יָמִים רַבִּים), what are “many” (מַאי רַבִּים). Three days, this after that, is called “many days” (תלתא יומא, דא בתר דא, אקרי ימים רבים), so too here “When you besiege a city, many days” (אוף הכא כי תצור על עיר, ימים רבים), three days, this after that (תְּלָתָא יוֹמִין, דָּא בָּתַר דָּא), when pestilence is recognized in the city (דְּאִשְׁתְּמוֹדְעָא דֶבֶר בְּמָתָא). From where do we know that “many days” are three days (מְנָלָן דְּיָמִים רַבִּים תְּלָתָא יוֹמִין אִינּוּן), as it is written (דִכְתִּיב), “And a woman when she has a flow of her blood many days” (וְאִשָּׁה כִּי יָזוּב זוֹב דָּמָהּ יָמִים רַבִּים) (Leviticus 15). And are “many days” more than three (וְכִי יָמִים רַבִּים אִינּוּן). Rather, three days, this after that, is called “many days” (אֶלָּא תְּלָתָא יוֹמִין דָּא בָּתַר דָּא, אִקְרֵי יָמִים רַבִּים). So too here, “When you besiege a city many days,” three days, this after that, when pestilence is recognized in the city Come, and I will charge you over all the members of My household (תָּא וְאַפְקִיד לָךְ עַל כל בְּנֵי בֵּיתִי). “You shall not destroy its tree” (לֹא תַּשְׁחִית אֶת עֵצָהּ), this is a wise student who is in the city (דָּא תַּלְמִיד חָכָם דְּאִיהוּ בְּמָתָא), for he is a tree of life (דְּאִיהוּ אִילָנָא דְּחַיֵּי), a tree that gives fruit (אִילָנָא דְּיָהִיב אִיבִין).
Another matter: “its tree” (דָּבָר אַחֵר אֶת עֵצָהּ), that one who gives counsel to the city (הַהוּא דְּיָהִיב עֵיטָא לְמָתָא), to be delivered from judgment (לְאִשְׁתְּזָבָא מִן דִּינָא), and teaches them the path in which they should go (וְאוֹלִיף לוֹן אָרְחָא דְּיָהֲכוּן בָּהּ). And therefore “you shall not destroy its tree by wielding an axe against it” (וְעַל דָּא לֹא תַשְׁחִית אֶת עֵצָהּ לִנְדּוֹחַ עָלָיו גַּרְזֶן), to bring judgment against him (לְנַדְחָא עָלֵיהּ דִּינָא), and not to draw upon him the flaming sword (וְלָא לְאוֹשָטָא עָלֵיהּ חַרְבָּא מְלָהֲטָא), the sharpened sword (חַרְבָּא מְשָׁנָּנָא), that slays the rest of mankind of the world (הַהִיא דְּקָטְלָא לִשְׁאַר אִינְשֵׁי דְּעָלְמָא). “For from it you shall eat” (כִּי מִמֶּנּוּ תֹאכֵל). And does that destroyer eat from it? No (וְכִי הַהוּא מְחַבְּלָא אָכִיל מִנֵּיהּ, לָא). Rather, “for from it you shall eat” (אֶלָּא כִּי מִמֶּנּוּ תֹאכֵל), that mighty fire (הַהִיא טִנְרָא תַּקִּיפָא), that from it go forth all mighty and holy spirits (הַהִיא דְּכָל רוּחִין תַּקִּיפִין וְקַדִּישִׁין נָפְקִין מִנָּהּ), for there is no delight nor satisfaction for the The Holy Spirit in this world (דְּלֵית הֲנָאָה וְתִיאוּבְתָּא לְרוּחַ קוּדְשָׁא בְּהַאי עָלְמָא), except Orayta of that righteous one (אֶלָּא אוֹרַיְיתָא דְּהַהוּא זַכָּאָה). As it were, he sustains her (כִּבְיָכוֹל אִיהוּ מְפַרְנֵס לָהּ), and gives her nourishment in this world (וְיָהֵיב לָהּ מְזוֹנָא בְּהַאי עָלְמָא), more than all the offerings of the world (יַתִּיר מִכָּל קָרְבְּנִין דְּעָלְמָא).
In the offering, what is written (בְּקָרְבָּן מַה כְּתִיב). “I have eaten my forest with my honey; eat, friends” (אָכַלְתִּי יַעְרִי עִם דִּבְשִׁי אִכְלוּ רֵעִים) (Song of Songs 5). And from the day that the Temple was destroyed (וּמִיּוֹמָא דְּאִתְחָרַב בֵּי מַקְדְּשָׁא), and the offerings were nullified (וּבָטְלוּ קָרְבְּנִין), Kudsha Berikh Hu has nothing (לֵית לֵיהּ לְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא), except those words of Orayta (אֶלָּא אִינּוּן מִלִּין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא), and the Orayta that is renewed in his mouth (וְאוֹרַיְיתָא דְּאִתְחַדְּשָׁא בְּפוּמֵיהּ). Therefore, “for from it you shall eat” (בְּגִין כָּךְ כִּי מִמֶּנּוּ תֹאכֵל), for she has no nourishment in this world except from him (וְלֵית לָהּ מְזוֹנָא בְּהַאי עָלְמָא, אֶלָּא מִמֶּנּוּ), and from those like him (וּמֵאִינּוּן דִּכְוָותֵיהּ). And since from him she eats (וְכֵיוָן דְּמִמֶּנּוּ תֹאכֵל), and he nourishes her (וְאִיהוּ זָן לָהּ), that one you shall not cut off (אוֹתוֹ לֹא תִּכְרוֹת), rather be hiddenly careful with him (הֲוִי טמיר זָהִיר בֵּיהּ), that you not come near him (דְּלָא תִּקְרַב בֵּיהּ).
