The lulav is in the right hand (לוּלָב בַּיָּמִין), included of six species (כָּלִיל שִׁשָּׁה מִינִין). Three Chadasim-Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet And they resemble the three colors of the eye Two branches of aravot-Netzach and Hod And they resemble the two lips The lulav is Yesod, which resembles the spinal column In it is the sustaining of all the bones
And concerning it David said: “All my bones shall say, Hashem, who is like You” (Psalms 35) The etrog is Malkhut (אֶתְרוֹג, מַלְכוּת), resembling the heart, in which are thoughts (דּוֹמֶה לְלִבָּא, דְּבֵיהּ הִרְהוּרִין). The wavings of Hallel [Praise] are joined with the wavings of taking the lulav [palm branch] (וְנִעְנוּעִין דְּהַלֵל, אִינּוּן מְשׁוּתָּפִין בְּנִעְנוּעִין דִּנְטִילַת לוּלָב). And they are eighteen in Ana [Please] (וְאִינּוּן ח״י בְּאָנָא). Eighteen and eighteen (ח״י ח״י), in Hodu [Give Thanks] at the beginning and at the end (בְּהוֹדוּ תְּחִלָּה וָסוֹף). Eighteen of taking the lulav [palm branch]—behold, seventy-two Because of this, lulav [palm branch] has the numerical value of sixty-eight (וּבְגִין דָּא לוּלָב בְּחוּשְׁבַּן ח״ס), and the four species of the lulav [palm branch]—behold, Chesed [Kindness], the right arm (וְד׳ מִינִין דְּלוּלָב, הָא חֶסֶד, דְּרוֹעָא יְמִינָא).
And because of this, the lulav was ordained in the right hand, on the side of Chesed The etrog is on the side of Gevurah, to the left, the heart And because the etrog resembles the heart, it was ordained to be in the left hand As it was explained: lulav in the right, and etrog in the left These correspond to “Remember” and “Guard” (אִינּוּן לָקֳבֵל זָכוֹר וְשָׁמוֹר). And who takes both of them? Lulav in his right, and etrog in his left
The Patriarchs came, and Ra‘ya Meheimna, and Aharon and David and Shlomo, and they blessed him, and said to him: You are the Holy Luminary, and your friends, who are six, correspond to the seven And you, Holy Luminary, are the western light in the middle, from which all six lights shine And concerning each one it is said: “The lamp of Hashem is the soul of man” (Proverbs 20) And Ra‘ya Meheimna shines in you, and you in your friends, and all is one, with no separation at all And from there and onward, branches spread to all the Masters of Wisdom, completing the words of your first fellowship to crown them
The Holy Luminary opened and said: In the first fellowship it was said “Many waters cannot quench the love…” What is “disgrace”? It is the second day, the sixth day, and the seventh day of Sukkot, on which they would pour water and wine (מַאי בּוּז. For the seven days of Sukkot, in them Yisrael would offer seventy bulls (דְּשֶׁבַע יוֹמִין דְּסוּכּוֹת, בְּהוֹן הָיוּ מַקְרִיבִין יִשְׂרָאֵל שִׁבְעִים פָּרִים), to atone for the seventy princes (לְכַפְּרָא עַל שִׁבְעִין מְמָנָן), so that the world would not remain destroyed because of them (בְּגִין דְּלָא יִשְׁתְּאַר עָלְמָא חָרוּב מִנַּיְיהוּ). This is what is written: “And on the fifteenth day… you shall offer a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, a sweet savor to Hashem; thirteen young bulls, without blemish” (Numbers 29) And on the second day, twelve bulls And on the third day, eleven And on the fourth day, ten And on the fifth day, nine bulls And on the sixth day, eight And on the seventh day, seven And all together, seventy (וְכֻלְּהוּ שִׁבְעִין). And each day they were fewer Why were they fewer?
Rather, here it alludes (אֶלָּא הָכָא קָא רָמִיז), as it is written: “And the ark rested in the seventh month” (Bereshit 8) (וַתָּנַח הַתֵּיבָה בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי). And just as there, in the days of the flood, “and the waters receded continually” (Bereshit 8) (וּמַה הָתָם בִּימֵי טוֹפָנָא, וְהַמַּיִם הָלְכוּ הָלוֹךְ וְחָסוֹר), so too in Tishrei, which is the seventh month, in which there are many commandments: Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, Sukkah and lulav, etrog, the species of lulav, shofar (אוּף הָכִי בְּתִשְׁרֵי, דְּאִיהוּ יַרְחָא שְׁבִיעָאָה, דְּבֵיהּ כַּמָה פִּקוּדִין, רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה וְיוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים, סֻכָּה וְלוּלָב אֶתְרוֹג, מִינִין דְּלוּלָב שׁוֹפָר). The supernal Shekhinta rests upon Yisrael, which is Teshuvah, sukkah, etrog, and Kudsha Berikh Hu, which is lulav
Immediately: “And the waters receded continually”-the sins of Yisrael diminish So too diminish the princes, who are the destructive angels appointed over them, who are compared to the waters of the flood As it was explained: one who commits one transgression acquires for himself one accuser At that time, as the sins diminish, their bulls diminish, their princes diminish, the seventy nations diminish, and the good that belongs to them diminishes greatly
The ark of Noach-Kudsha Berikh Hu appointed to bring with him (תֵּיבַת נֹחַ, מָנֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, לְאַעֲלָא עִמֵּיהּ), “two by two, seven by seven, male and female, for an offering, to protect Noach and all those who entered with him into the ark” (Bereshit 7) (שְׁנַיִם שְׁנַיִם שִׁבְעָה שִׁבְעָה זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה, לְקָרְבָּנָא, לְאַגָּנָא עַל נֹחַ, וְעַל כָּל אִינּוּן דְּעָאלִין עִמֵּיהּ לַתֵּיבָה). So too, those who guard the festivals and seasons, which are the holy days, two by two, seven by seven Two by two-the two days of Rosh HaShanah, and the two days of Shavuot And because two of them are on account of doubt, behold there are two days of Purim in their places Seven by seven-the seven days of Pesach, the seven days of Sukkot Noach corresponds to the day of Shabbat, and this is “from all the living” (נֹחַ לָקֳבֵל יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת, וְהַאי אִיהוּ מִכָּל הַחַי).
The sukkah protects over Yisrael This is what is written: “And a sukkah shall be for shade by day from the heat” (Isaiah 4) The sukkah protects (סֻכָּה קָא אֲגִינָת). Just as the ark of Noach protected, so the sukkah protects And further, “from all the living”-these are the eighteen blessings of prayer From those nine and nine-the blessing of the minim-in it the ten Sefirot are completed, from above to below and from below to above And this corresponds to Noach And further, “from all the living”-the Shekhinta protects over those who keep the letter Yod, the sign of Shabbat, within its boundary, which is eight thousand, two thousand to each side And further, “from all the living”-these are those who keep the letter Yod of the covenant, which is in eight days, as it is said: “And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised” (Leviticus 12) And further, “from all the living”-these are those who keep the letter Yod of tefillin, in its eight passages
