And the Orayta that was broken (some say: that was given) (וְאוֹרַיְיתָא דְּאִתְבְּרִיאַת [נ״א דְּאִתְיֵיהִיבַת]), its tablets were broken, which are likened to virgins (אִתְּבָּרוּ לוּחִין דִּילָהּ, דְּאִינּוּן מְשׁוּלִים לַבְּתוּלִים). And Kudsha Berikh Hu returned and gave them to Yisrael, to guard her The Oral Orayta is called “Halakhah to Moshe from Sinai” (אוֹרַיְיתָא דְבְּעַל פֶּה אִתְקְרִיאַת הֲלָכָה לְמֹשֶׁה מִסִּינַי). And her bridegroom broke her virginity And one who brings forth an evil name upon her, saying that this Orayta is not the same, for her tablets were broken Kudsha Berikh Hu will say to him that He is the father of the damsel
“Bat” (daughter) - that is in the word “Bereshit” - she is the daughter of the King Kudsha Berikh Hu said: “And they shall spread the garment” (Deuteronomy 22) (קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אָמַר, וּפָרְשׂוּ הַשִּׂמְלָה), and the curtain of the Sefer Torah was opened, and they shall see that which is written in it (וְאִתְפַּתְחַת יְרִיעָה מִסֵפֶר תּוֹרָה, וְיֶחֶזּוּן דְּאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ): “Carve for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, and I shall write upon the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke” (Exodus 34) (פְּסָל לְךָ שְׁנֵי לוּחוֹת אֲבָנִים כָּרִאשׁוֹנִים, וְכָתַבְתִּי עַל הַלּוּחוֹת אֶת הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר הָיוּ עַל הַלּוּחוֹת הָרִאשׁוֹנִים אֲשֶׁר שִׁבַּרְתָּ).
Immediately Eliyahu arose, and all the masters of the academy, and they blessed him and said: Sinai, Sinai! Thus it appeared to hear your words and be silent, but with permission of Kudsha Berikh Hu and His Shekhinta, I desire to speak a word with you, for your honor He said to him: Speak, my son
He opened and said (פָּתַח וְאָמַר): “Ra‘aya Meheimna, this bride of yours (רַעְיָא מְהֵימָנָא, הַאי כַּלָּה דִּילָךְ), Kudsha Berikh Hu gave to Avraham (קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא יָהַב לָהּ לְאַבְרָהָם), to raise her for your sake (לְגַדְּלָא לָהּ לְגַבָּךְ). Because he guarded her (וּבְגִין דְּאִיהוּ נָטִיר לָהּ), she was called his daughter (אִתְקְרִיאַת בְּרָתֵיהּ). This is what is written: ‘A daughter was to Avraham, and her name was Bakol [with all]’ (Bereshit 24) (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, בַּת הָיְתָה לוֹ לְאַבְרָהָם וּבַכֹּל שְׁמָהּ). Through her, he fulfilled the entire Orayta (וּבָהּ קִיֵּים כָּל אוֹרַיְיתָא כֻּלָּהּ), even eruvei tavshilin [joining cooked foods] (וַאֲפִילּוּ עֵירוּבֵי תַּבְשִׁילִין). This is what is written: ‘And he kept My charge …’ (Bereshit 26) (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, וַיִּשְׁמוֹר מִשְׁמַרְתִּי וְגוֹ׳). He was to her a foster-father (וְאִיהוּ הֲוָה לְגַבָּהּ אוֹמֵן), as in: ‘And he was bringing up Hadassah’ (Esther 2) (כְּגוֹן, וַיְהִי אוֹמֵן אֶת הֲדַסָּה). Kudsha Berikh Hu blessed him because of her (וְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא בָּרִיךְ לֵיהּ בְּגִינָהּ).
This is what is written: “And Hashem blessed Avraham in all” (Bereshit 24) And He raised her with all good qualities, and bestowed upon her Chesed, and elevated her in greatness with the attribute of Chesed of Avraham His house was, for her sake, open wide (וַהֲוָה בֵּיתֵיהּ בְּגִינָהּ פָּתוּחַ לָרְוָוחָה), to bestow Chesed [Kindness] upon all who enter the world (לְמִגְמַל חֶסֶד עִם כָּל בָּאֵי עוֹלָם). Because he bestowed kindness toward her (וּבְגִין דְּאִיהוּ גָּמִיל חֶסֶד עִמָּהּ), when the children of Avraham were held in pledge through many sins in Egypt (כַּד בְּנוֹי דְּאַבְרָהָם הֲווֹ מְמוּשְׁכָּנִין בְּכַמָּה חוֹבִין בְּמִצְרַיִם), Kudsha Berikh Hu said to Ra‘aya Meheimna: “Go and repay kindness (אָמַר קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לָךְ רַעְיָא מְהֵימָנָא, זִיל וְגָמִיל טִיבוּ), to him who bestowed kindness with you (לְמַאן דְּגָמִיל לֵיהּ עִמָּךְ). For this bride of yours, you gave her to him (דְּדָא כַּלָּה דִּילָךְ, יְהִיבַת לָהּ לֵיהּ), to raise her with good qualities (לְגַדְּלָא לָהּ בְּמִדּוֹת טָבִין), and he raised her through the thirteen attributes of mercy (וְאִיהוּ גָּדִיל לָהּ בִּתְלֵיסָר מְכִילָן דְּרַחֲמֵי).”
These are hinted in the three words Vahu Ani Vahu (דִּרְמִיזִין בִּתְלַת תֵּיבִין וָה״ו אֲנִ״י וָה״ו), whose initial letters are Vav, Alef, and Vav (דְּאִינּוּן וָא״ו). They contain seventy-two Names (דְּכָלִיל בְּהוֹן ע״ב שְׁמָהָן), corresponding to the numerical value of Chesed [Kindness] (כְּמִנְיַן חֶסֶד). With them Avraham overcame the seventy-two nations, and in your bride there was a treasure in the seventy-two Names, and he triumphed over every nation and tongue And for this reason: “Who leads Moshe by the right hand, the arm of His Tiferet” (Isaiah 63) And He split the waters, for the sea was torn before His children into twelve splits, corresponding to Vav And in the merit of Alef the sea became dry land And in it the Egyptians drowned, for they did not believe in the Vav which is One And at the time to come: “As in the days of your going out from the land of Egypt, I will show him wonders” (Micah 7) (וּלְזִמְנָא דְּאָתֵי, כִּימֵי צֵאתְךָ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם אַרְאֶנּוּ נִפְלָאוֹת), it will be fulfilled in Yisrael, the seed of Avraham (יִתְקַיֵּים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל זַרְעָא דְּאַבְרָהָם). And in you will be fulfilled: “Who leads Moshe by the right hand, the arm of His Tiferet” - the seed of Avraham - and splits the waters of the Orayta before them, to be for you an eternal name. And there your bride shall prosper And because this daughter was given to Yisrael, she is your Halakhah, from the side of the left, the Halakhah to Moshe from Sinai For from the side of the right, Heh - your Halakhah - from the side of the Name of Avraham Yod is Yitzchak (יוֹ״ד דְּיִצְחָק). And all of it is Heh from Elohim And you are Vav, her fullness, her completeness, the full cup At first Kes Yah And in the end: the full cup, the blessing of Hashem And because it was given to Yisrael through your hand (וּבְגִין דְּאִתְיְיהִיבַת לְיִשְׂרָאֵל עַל יְדָךְ), who are from the side of the middle pillar (דְּאִינּוּן מִסִּטְרָא דְּעַמּוּדָא דְּאֶמְצָעִיתָא), it is necessary to reveal why it was given to them (אִית לְגַלָּאָה אֲמַאי אִתְיְיהִיבַת לוֹן), for indeed Avraham-it is said: why was it given to him? And you performed Chesed with his children (וְאַנְתְּ גְּמִילַת חֶסֶד עִם בְּנוֹי), in the manner that he performed with you (כְּגַוְונָא דְּגָמִיל הוּא עִמְּךָ).
To Yitzchak, Kudsha Berikh Hu gave it to him and to his seed (לְיִצְחָק יָהַב לֵיהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לֵיהּ וּלְזַרְעֵיהּ), to guard it from the Tree of Good and Evil (לְנַטְרָא לָהּ מֵאִילָנָא דְּטוֹב וָרָע) [Some say: to crown it (נ״א לְעַטְרָא)]. And they made for it many fences (וְעַבְדּוּ לָהּ כַּמָּה גְּדָרִין), and they cut for it many garments (וַחֲתִּיכוּ לָהּ כַּמָּה לְבוּשִׁין), which are garments of gold (דְּאִינּוּן לְבוּשֵׁי דַּהֲבָא), in many divisions (בְּכַמָּה פְּסָקוֹת). And they were dividing and challenging upon them regarding these divisions (וַהֲווּ חוֹלְקִין וּמַקְשִׁין עָלַיְיהוּ עַל אִלֵּין פְּסָקוֹת), to rectify it with many resolutions (לְתַקְּנָא לָהּ בְּכַמָּה פִּרוּקִין), to adorn it with many kinds of adornments (לְקַשֵּׁט לָהּ בְּכַמָּה מִינֵי קִשּׁוּטִין), for Shabbatot and Festivals (לְשַׁבָּתוֹת וְיָמִים טוֹבִים), so that it should be adorned for you at the time that you will come to her in the final redemption (לְמֶהֱוֵי מְקֻשָּׁטָא לְגַבָּךְ בְּזִמְנָא דְּתֵיתֵי לְגַבָּהּ בְּפוּרְקָנָא בַּתְרַיְיתָא), as it is said of her: what was, that it is (דְּאִתְּמַר בָּהּ מַה שֶּׁהָיָה הוּא) (Ecclesiastes 1). And because they caused it for you (וּבְגִין דְּאִינּוּן גָּרְמוּ לָךְ), and did good with you (וַעֲבִידוּ עִמָּךְ טָבִין), you endured on their behalf many afflictions (אַנְתְּ סְבִילַת בְּגִינַיְיהוּ כַּמָּה מַכְתְּשִׁין), because Mashiach ben Yosef should not be killed (בְּגִין דְּלָא יִתְקְטִיל מָשִׁיחַ בֶּן יוֹסֵף), as it is said of him: and the face of an ox from the left (וּפְנֵי שׁוֹר מֵהַשְּׂמֹאל) (Ezekiel 1), from the seed of Yosef (מִזַּרְעָא דְּיוֹסֵף), as it is said of him: his firstborn ox, majesty is his (בְּכוֹר שׁוֹרוֹ הָדָר לוֹ) (Deuteronomy 33). And because he and his seed should not be desecrated among the star worshippers and constellations (וּבְגִין דְּלָא יִתְחַלֵּל הוּא וְזַרְעֵיהּ בֵּין עוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים וּמַזָּלוֹת), through the sin of Yerav‘am who made idolatry (בְּחוֹבֵיהּ דְּיָרָבְעָם דְּעֲבַד עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה), he was about to be desecrated among the star worshippers and constellations he and his seed (הֲוָה הוּא לְאִתְחַלְּלָא בְּעוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים וּמַזָּלוֹת הוּא וְזַרְעֵיהּ), because Yerav‘am ben Nevat was from his seed (בְּגִין דְּיָרָבְעָם בֶּן נְבָט מִזַּרְעֵיהּ אִיהוּ).p1-2 Because of him it is said about you: and he was wounded for our transgressions (וְהוּא מְחוֹלָל מִפְּשָׁעֵינוּ) (Isaiah 53), and with his wounds we are healed (וּבַחֲבוּרָתוֹ נִרְפָּא לָנוּ). And Yisrael, because they are inclusive of right and left (וְיִשְׂרָאֵל בְּגִין דְּאִינּוּן כְּלִילָן יְמִינָא וּשְׂמָאלָא), there your Hei was in wholeness (תַּמָּן הֵ״י דִּילָךְ בִּשְׁלִימוּ הֲוָה), you are to be united with her among them (אִית לָךְ לְאִתְיַחֲדָא עִמָּהּ בֵּינַיְיהוּ). And because it is said of you (וּבְגִין דְּאִתְּמַר בָּךְ), when he brought forth an evil name upon the virgin of Yisrael (כִּי הוֹצִיא שֵׁם רָע עַל בְּתוּלַת יִשְׂרָאֵל), it is said of you: and she shall be his wife, he shall not be able to send her away all his days (אִתְּמַר בָּךְ וְלוֹ תִהְיֶה לְאִשָּׁה לֹא יוּכַל לְשַׁלְּחָהּ כָּל יָמָיו), in exile he is not able to be separated from her all his days (בְּגָלוּתָא לָא יָכִיל לְמִפְרַשׁ לֵיהּ מִנָּהּ כָּל יוֹמוֹי). And how is this evil name that you brought forth upon her Rather, after she was given to Yisrael (אֶלָּא בָּתַר דְּאִתְיְיהִיבַת אִיהִי לְיִשְׂרָאֵל), whoever brings forth an evil name upon Yisrael (כָּל מַאן דְּאַפִּיק שׁוּם בִּישׁ עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל), it is as if he brought it forth upon her (כְּאִילּוּ אַפִּיק עָלָהּ). And it was indeed an evil name (וְשׁוּם בִּישׁ הֲוָה), that you said before Kudsha Berikh Hu (דְּאַמָרְת לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא): Why Hashem does Your anger burn against Your people (לָמָה יְיָ יֶחֱרֶה אַפְּךָ בְּעַמֶּךָ) (Exodus 32). And Kudsha Berikh Hu said (וְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אָמַר): And you brought forth an evil name upon Yisrael who made the calf (וְכִי אַנְתְּ אַפִּיק שׁוּם בִּישׁ עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל דְּעַבְדּוּ יַת עֶגֶל)? Go, descend, for your people have corrupted A mixed-multitude indeed (עֶרֶב רַב וַדַּאי), for you converted them (דְּאַנְתְּ גַּיְירַת לוֹן), they made the calf (עַבְדוּ יַת עֶגְלָא). And because of this (וּבְגִין דָּא): when he brought forth an evil name upon the virgin of Yisrael, and she shall be his wife (כִּי הוֹצִיא שֵׁם רָע עַל בְּתוּלַת יִשְׂרָאֵל וְלוֹ תִהְיֶה לְאִשָּׁה).
Notes
Ohr HaChammah on Zohar: And Rabbi Chaim Vital wrote (וְהָרַח״ו כָּתַב), in order that Mashiach ben Ephraim will not be killed (בְּגִין דְּלָא יִתְקְטַל מָשִׁיחַ בֶּן אֶפְרַיִם), the matter of Mashiach ben Yosef who is killed due to the sin of Yerovam (עִנְיַן מָשִׁיחַ בֶּן יוֹסֵף שֶׁנֶּהֱרָג בַּעֲוֹן יָרָבְעָם), for he is from the seed of Ephraim (כִּי מִזֶּרַע אֶפְרַיִם הוּא), this will be understood at greater length from Midrash Eichah (זֶה יוּבַן יוֹתֵר בַּאֹרֶךְ מִמִּדְרַשׁ אֵיכָה), from the Zohar on the verse “I will see him, but not now” (מִן הַזֹּהַר עַל פָּסוּק אֶרְאֶנּוּ וְלֹא עַתָּה), for Mashiach ben Yosef is literally the grandson of Yerovam ben Nevat (כִּי מָשִׁיחַ בֶּן יוֹסֵף הוּא מַמָּשׁ בֶּן בְּנוֹ שֶׁל יָרָבְעָם בֶּן נְבָט), and this is alluded to in the verse regarding Aviyah son of Yerovam (וְזֶה נִרְמָז בַּפָּסוּק עַל אֲבִיָּה בֶּן יָרָבְעָם), “this one alone of Yerovam shall come to the grave” (זֶה לְבַדּוֹ יָבוֹא לְיָרָבְעָם אֶל קָבֶר), because something good was found in him (יַעַן נִמְצָא בּוֹ דָּבָר טוֹב), which is the Mashiach (שֶׁהוּא הַמָּשִׁיחַ), as it is said “and she saw him that he was good” (עַל דֶּרֶךְ וַתֵּרֶא אוֹתוֹ כִּי טוֹב הוּא), and by this you will know why The Holy One Blessed Be He delayed so long in punishing Yerovam (וּבָזֶה תֵּדַע לָמָּה אִחֵר כָּל כָּךְ זְמַן הקב״ה לְיָרָבְעָם לִפְרֹעַ מִמֶּנּוּ), in order that Mashiach ben Yosef would be born (כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּוָּלֵד מָשִׁיחַ בֶּן יוֹסֵף), and you know that thirty generations are included among those punished for the sins of their fathers (וְיָדַעְתָּ כִּי דּוֹר שְׁלֹשִׁים הֵם מִכְּלַל הַנֶּעֱנָשִׁים בַּעֲוֹן אֲבוֹתָם), as it is written “and our pains he bore” (כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב וּמַכְאֹבֵינוּ הוּא סְבָלָם), end of his words (עכ״ל).
