He said to him: the judgment of the guilty of Gehinom is twelve months (אָמַר לֵיהּ דִּינָא דְּחַיָּיבֵי דְּגֵיהִנֹּם תְּרֵיסַר יַרְחֵי), and Kudsha Berikh Hu raises them up from Gehinom (וְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא סָלִיק לוֹן מִגֵּיהִנֹּם), and there they are whitened and sit at the gate of Gehinom (וְתַמָּן מִתְלַבְּנִין וְיָתְבִין לְתַרְעָא דְּגֵיהִנֹּם), and they see those guilty who enter and are judged there (וְחָמָאן אִנּוּן חַיָּיבִין דְּעָאלִין וְדָנִין לוֹן תַּמָּן), and they seek mercy upon them (וְאִנּוּן תָּבְעֵי רַחֲמֵי עֲלַיְיהוּ). And afterward, Kudsha Berikh Hu has mercy upon them (וּלְבָתַר קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא חַיֵּיס עֲלַיְיהוּ), and brings them into the place prepared for them (וְאָעִיל לוֹן לְדוּכְתָּא דְּאִצְטְרִיךְ לוֹן). From that day and onward the body is found in dust (מֵהַהוּא יוֹמָא וּלְהָלְאָה גּוּפָא אִשְׁתְּכַךְ בְּעַפְרָא), and the Neshamah returns to her place as is proper for her (וְנִשְׁמָתָא יַרְתָּא אַתְרָהּ כִּדְחָזֵי לָהּ).
Come and see: for it is said that even those of the generation of the Flood were not judged except with fire and water Cold water descends from above (מַיָּא קְרִירָן נַחֲתֵי מִלְּעֵילָא), and boiling water rises from below like fire (וּמַיָּא רְתִיחָן סָלְקֵי מִתַּתָּא כְּאֶשָּׁא), and they were judged by two judgments (וְאִתְּדָּנוּ בִּתְרֵי דִּינִין), because the judgment from above was thus (בְּגִין דְּדִינָא דִּלְעֵילָא הָכִי הֲוָה), and for this reason in Sedom there was brimstone and fire (בְּגִין כָּךְ בִּסְדוֹם גָּפְרִית וָאֵשׁ).
He said to him: will they rise for the Day of Judgment? He said to him: Behold, it is said (אָמַר לֵיהּ: הָא אִתְּמַר): but these of Sedom and Amorah shall not rise (אֲבָל אִלֵּין דְּסְדוֹם וַעֲמוֹרָה לָא יְקוּמוּן). And the verse proves it, as it is written: “Brimstone and salt, burning, all her land; it shall not be sown, nor shall it sprout…” “Which Hashem overturned in His anger and in His wrath” (אֲשֶׁר הָפַךְ יְיָ בְּאַפּוֹ וּבַחֲמָתוֹ). Which Hashem overturned - in this world (אֲשֶׁר הָפַךְ יְיָ בְּעָלְמָא דֵּין); in His anger - in the World to Come (בְּאַפּוֹ בְּעָלְמָא דְאָתֵי); in His wrath - at the time when Kudsha Berikh Hu will resurrect the dead (וּבַחֲמָתוֹ בִּזְמְנָא דְּזַמִּין קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לַאֲחָיָיא מֵתַיָּיא). He said to him: come and see (אָמַר לֵיהּ: תָּא חֲזֵי): just as their land is utterly obliterated forever and ever (כַּמָּה דְּאַרְעָא דִּלְהוֹן אִתְאֲבִיד לְעָלַם וּלְעָלְמֵי עָלְמַיָּא), so too are they utterly obliterated forever and ever (הָכִי נָמֵי אִתְאֲבִידוּ אִנּוּן לְעָלַם וּלְעָלְמֵי עָלְמַיָּא). And come and see: the judgment of Kudsha Berikh Hu is a judgment against judgment They did not grant the soul of the poor sustenance in food or drink (אִנּוּן לָא הֲוָה תַּיְּבִין נַפְשָׁא דְּמִסְכֵּנָא בְּמֵיכְלָא וּבְמִשְׁתַּיָּא); so too, Kudsha Berikh Hu did not restore their souls in the World to Come (אוּף הָכִי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לָא אָתִיב לוֹן נַפְשַׁיְיהוּ לְעָלְמָא דְאָתֵי). And come and see: they withheld Charity, which is called Life (וְתָּא חֲזֵי: אִנּוּן אִתְמְנָעוּ מִצְּדָקָה דְּאִקְּרֵי חַיִּים); so too Kudsha Berikh Hu withheld from them Life in this world and in the World to Come (אוּף קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא מָנַע מִנַּיְיהוּ חַיִּים בְּעָלְמָא דֵּין וּבְעָלְמָא דְאָתֵי). And just as they withheld paths and ways from the people of the world (וְכַמָּה דְּאִנּוּן מָנְעוּ אָרְחִין וּשְׁבִילִין מִבְּנֵי עָלְמָא), so too Kudsha Berikh Hu withheld from them the paths and ways of mercy (הָכִי נָמֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא מָנַע מִנַּיְיהוּ אוֹרְחִין וּשְׁבִילִין דְּרַחֲמֵי) to have mercy upon them in this world and in the World to Come (לְרַחֲמָא עֲלַיְיהוּ בְּעָלְמָא דֵּין וּבְעָלְמָא דְאָתֵי).
Rabbi Abba said: all people of the world will rise (רַבִּי אַבָּא אָמַר: כֻּלְּהוּ בְּנֵי עָלְמָא יְקוּמוּן), and they will rise for judgment (וִיקוּמוּן לְדִינָא), and about them it is written (וְעֲלַיְיהוּ כְּתִיב): “And these to disgrace and everlasting abhorrence” (Daniel 12) (וְאֵלֶּה לַחֲרָפוֹת וּלְדֵרָאוֹן עוֹלָם). And Kudsha Berikh Hu is Master of Mercy (וְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא מָארִי דְרַחֲמִין אִיהוּ), and once they were judged in this world and received judgment (כֵּיוָן דְּדָן לְהוּ בְּהַאי עָלְמָא וְקַבִּילוּ דִּינָא), they are not judged with all the judgments (לָא אִתְּדָּנוּ בְּכֻלְּהוּ דִּינִין).
