And because of this: “For your love is better than wine” (וּבְגִין כָּךְ: כִּי טוֹבִים דּוֹדֶיךָ מִיָּיִן) [Shir haShirim 1:2]-better than that wine (מֵהַהוּא יַיִן) which brings joy, brightens the countenance, gladdens the eyes, and creates desire (דְּמְחַדֵּי וְנָהִיר אַנְפִּין וְחָיְיכִין עַיְינִין וְעָבִיד רְעוּתָא), and not like the wine that intoxicates and causes wrath, darkens the face and burns the eyes-the wine of anger (וְלָאו מִיַּיִן דִּמְשַׁכֵּר [דְּשַׁכִּיר] וְעָבִיד רוּגְזָא, וְאַחְשִׁיךְ אַנְפִּין, וְלָהֲטָאן עַיְינִין-יַיִן דְּרוּגְזָא). And for this, because this wine is good, it brightens the face, gladdens the eyes, and produces longing of love (וְעַל דָּא: בְּגִין דְּחֲמַר דָּא טַב, נָהִיר אַנְפִּין, וְחָדֵי עַיְינִין, וְעָבִיד תְּאוּבְתָּא דִּרְחִימוּ), they offer it every day upon the altar (מַקְרִיבִין לֵיהּ כָּל יוֹמָא עַל גַּבֵּי מַדְבְּחָא), the measure of one who drinks it is made glad and brings serenity (שִׁעוּרָא דְּמַאן דְּשָׁתֵי לֵיהּ, חָדֵי לֵיהּ, וְעָבִיד לֵיהּ נַיְיחָא), as it is written: “And its libation of wine, a quarter of a hin” (דִּכְתִיב: וְנִסְכּוֹ יַיִן רְבִיעִית הַהִין) [Bamidbar 28:7]. And because of this: “For your love is better than wine” (וּבְגִין כָּךְ: כִּי טוֹבִים דּוֹדֶיךָ מִיָּיִן), from that wine through which arousal of love and desire emerges (מֵהַהוּא יַיִן דְּאִתְעַר רְחִימוּתָא וְתְּאוּבְתָּא). And all is as below: when love is aroused below, so is it above Two lamps: when the light above is dimmed by the smoke that rises from below, then that which is above is kindled Rabbi Ḥizkiyah said: so it is indeed, that the supernal world depends upon the lower, and the lower upon the supernal And from the time that the Temple was destroyed, blessings are no longer found above or below (וּמֵזִמְנָא דְּאִתְחֲרִיב בֵּי מִקְדְּשָׁא, בִּרְכָאן לָא אִשְׁתַּכָּחוּ לְעֵילָא וְתַתָּא)-for the vision of this in that depends (לְאַחֲזָאָה דְּדָא בְּדָא תַּלְיָא).
Rabbi Yose said: blessings are not found, but curses are (וְאָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסֵי: בִּרְכָאן לָא אִשְׁתַּכָּחוּ, וּלְוָוטִין אִשְׁתַּכָּחוּ), for the nourishment of all now issues from that side (דְּהָא יְנִיקוּ דְּכֹלָּא בְּהַהוּא סִטְרָא נָפְקֵי), Some say: and blessings do not issue Why is that? Because Yisrael do not dwell in the land and do not perform the service (מַאי טַעְמָא בְּגִין דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל לָא שַׁרְיָין בְּאַרְעָא, וְלָא פָּלְחֵי פּוּלְחָנָא), which requires the lighting of lamps and the presence of blessings (דְּאִצְטְרִיךְ לְאַדְלָקָא בּוֹצִינִין וּלְאִשְׁתַּכָּחָא בִּרְכָאן). And because of this, blessings are not found above or below, and the world does not stand in its proper condition And Rabbi Ḥizkiyah said: “I will not again curse the ground for man’s sake” (וְאָמַר רַבִּי חִזְקִיָּה: לֹא אוֹסִיף לְקַלֵּל עוֹד אֶת הָאֲדָמָה בַּעֲבוּר הָאָדָם) [Bereishit 8:21]. What does this mean? (מַאי הוּא) Rabbi Yisa said: thus I heard from Rabbi Shim'on, who said (אָמַר רַבִּי יֵיסָא: הָכִי שְׁמַעְנָא מֵרַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן דְּאָמַר), whenever the supernal fire increases in strength, the smoke below-which is the judgment-intensifies wrath and pours everything out (כָּל זִמְנָא דְּאֵשָׁא דִּלְעֵילָא אוֹסִיף לְתָקְפָא, תְּנָנָא דְּאִיהוּ דִּינָא דִּלְתַּתָּא אַתְקִיף רוּגְזָא וְשָׁצֵי כֹּלָּא). Because when fire emerges, it does not stop before it completes the judgment And when the lower judgment no longer increases through the supernal judgment, judgment is executed and ceases, and no more judgment goes out to destroy And because of this it is written: “I will not again…” meaning, I will not again allow added strength to the lower judgment
The Yenuka said: I heard it because it is written: “Cursed is the ground for your sake” (אָמַר הַהוּא יְנוּקָא: שְׁמַעְנָא בְּגִין דְּכְתִיב: אֲרוּרָה הָאֲדָמָה בַּעֲבוּרֶךָ) [Bereishit 3:17]. For in that moment when the ground was ensnared in the sin of Adam (דְּהָא בְּהַהִיא שַׁעֲתָא דְּאִתְלַטְיָא אַרְעָא בְּחוֹבָא דְּאָדָם), permission was given for that evil serpent-who is the destroyer of the world-to rule over her, and he poured out upon the children of the world (אִתְיְיהִיב רְשׁוּ לְשַׁלְטָאָה עֲלָהּ הַהוּא חִוְיָא בִּישָׁא דְּאִיהוּ מְחַבְּלָא דְּעָלְמָא, וְשָׁצֵי בְּנֵי עָלְמָא). From that day that Noach brought an offering and Kudsha Berikh Hu inhaled it (מֵהַהוּא יוֹמָא דְּקָרִיב נֹחַ קָרְבָּנָא וְאָרַח לֵיהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא), permission was given to the earth to come forth from under that serpent and emerge from defilement (אִתְיְיהִיב רְשׁוּ לְאַרְעָא לְנַפְקָא מִתְּחוֹת הַהוּא נָחָשׁ, וְנָפְקָא מִמְּסָאָבָא). And for this, Yisrael offer offerings to Kudsha Berikh Hu in order to illuminate the face of the earth
Again The Yenuka opened and said: “For the fragrance of your oils is good” (עוֹד פָּתַח הַהוּא יְנוֹקָא וְאָמַר: לְרֵיחַ שְׁמָנֶיךָ טוֹבִים) [Shir haShirim 1:3]. “For the fragrance”-what does this mean? (לְרֵיחַ-מַאן) Rather, there is fragrance and there is fragrance (אֶלָּא: אִית רֵיחַ וְאִית רֵיחַ). The fragrance of the korban and the fragrance of the incense The fragrance of the korban draws near and unifies all those tribes of the palace of the House of David (רֵיחַ הַקָּרְבָּן מַקְרִיב וּמְיַיחֵד כָּל אִינוּן שִׁבְטַיָּא דְּהֵיכָלָא דְּבֵית דָּוִד), and the fragrance of the incense draws near, unifies, and illumines those supernal luminaries (וְרֵיחַ הַקְּטֹרֶת מַקְרִיב וּמְיַיחֵד וְאַנְהִיר אִינוּן בּוֹצִינִין עִלָּאִין), which shine like the pure balsam (נָהִירֵי אֲפַרְסְמוֹנָא דַּכְיָא). And for this reason, there were two altars: the altar of the incense and the altar of the burnt offering The altar of the incense is inner (מִזְבֵּחַ הַקְּטֹרֶת-אִיהוּ פְּנִימָאָה), and the altar of the burnt offering is external (וּמִזְבֵּחַ הָעוֹלָה-אִיהוּ לְבַר). The fragrance of the burnt offering altar prepares the illumination of the lower sparks (רֵיחַ מִזְבֵּחַ הָעוֹלָה מַתְקִין לְאַנְהֲרָא בּוֹצִינִין תַּתָּאִין), the fragrance of the incense altar prepares the illumination of the upper sparks (רֵיחַ מִזְבֵּחַ הַקְּטֹרֶת מַתְקִין לְאַנְהֲרָא בּוֹצִינִין עִלָּאִין). And for this: “For the fragrance of your oils is good” (וְעַל דָּא: לְרֵיחַ שְׁמָנֶיךָ טוֹבִים)-for the fragrance of that incense, “your oils” are good (לְרֵיחַ דְּהַהוּא קְטֹרֶת, שְׁמָנֶיךָ טוֹבִים).
Come and see: two altars there are-an inner altar above and an outer altar below The inner altar is whole, and this is what is written “the altar” with an added Hei (מִזְבֵּחַ הַפְּנִימִי-הוּא שָׁלֵם, וְזֶהוּ דִּכְתִיב: הַמִּזְבֵּחָה, בְּתוֹסֶפֶת הֵ״א), and it is so in every place (וְכָךְ הוּא בְּכָל מָקוֹם). But the outer altar is written missing a Hei, like na‘arah (girl) and na‘ar (youth), which are written without the Hei For from the arousal of the inner altar Some say: the outer altar below, the inner altar above is aroused And with what is it aroused? By fragrance (וּבְמָה אִתְעָר בְּרֵיחַ). Some say: by the fragrance of the offerings. And by the fragrance of the incense of the inner altar below, the inner altar above is aroused. And with what is it aroused? With the fragrance of the incense The incense above, and the fragrance of the korban below are aroused (הַקְּטֹרֶת שֶׁל מַעְלָה, וְאִתְעָר רֵיחַ הַקָּרְבָּן שֶׁל מַטָּה), and on this it is written: “For the fragrance of your oils is good” (וְעַל דָּא: לְרֵיחַ שְׁמָנֶיךָ טוֹבִים)-these are the sparks that shine and flash (אִינוּן בּוֹצִינִין נַהֲרִין וְנָצִיצִין). Here it is written: “Good”, and there it is written: “And Elohim saw the light, that it was good” (כְּתִיב הָכָא: טוֹבִים, וּכְתִיב הָתָם: וַיַּרְא אֱלֹהִים אֶת הָאוֹר כִּי טוֹב) [Bereishit 1:4].
Rabbi Chizkiyah said: it is fitting (אָמַר רַבִּי חִזְקִיָּה: יָאוֹת הוּא), and this was suspended until Yisra’el stood at Mount Sinai (וְהַאי הֲוָה תָּלֵי עַד דְּקָיְימוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל עַל טוּרָא דְּסִינַי). Rabbi Yisa said: Kudsha Berikh Hu diminished the moon, and that serpent ruled (אָמַר רַבִּי יִיסָא: קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אַזְעִיר לָהּ לְסִיהֲרָא וְשָׁלְטָא הַהוּא נָחָשׁ), but for the sin of Adam it was entrapped, in order to sustain the world (אֲבָל בְּגִין חוֹבָא דְּאָדָם אִתְלַטְיָיא בְּגִין לְמֵילַט עָלְמָא). On that day when the Orayta was given (בְּהַהוּא יוֹמָא [דְּאִתְיְהֶבֶת אוֹרַיְיתָא]) the earth emerged from that curse, and the moon remained in that diminished state (נַפְקַת אַרְעָא מֵהַהִיא קְלָלָה וְקָיְימָא סִיהֲרָא בְּהַהִיא גְּרִיעוּתָא), except in the time when offerings were present in the world and Yisra’el dwelled in their land (בַּר בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּקוּרְבָּנָא אִשְׁתַּכָּחוּ בְּעָלְמָא, וְיִשְׂרָאֵל יָתְבִין עַל אַרְעֲהוֹן).
Rabbi Yisa said to The Yenuka: what is your name? He said to him: Abba He said to him: Abba-may you be in everything with wisdom and with years He recited about him: “Let your father and your mother rejoice, and let she who bore you be glad” (קָרָא עֲלֵיהּ: יִשְׂמַח אָבִיךָ וְאִמֶּךָ וְתָגֵל יוֹלַדְתֶּךָ) [Mishlei 23:25].
Rabbi Chizkiyah said: Kudsha Berikh Hu is destined to remove the impure spirit from the world (אָמַר רַבִּי חִזְקִיָּה: זַמִּין קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְאַעֲבָרָא רוּחַ מְסָאֳבָא מִן עָלְמָא), as it is written: “And I will remove the unclean spirit from the land” (כְּמָה דִכְתִיב: וְאֶת רוּחַ הַטֻּמְאָה אַעֲבִיר מִן הָאָרֶץ) [Zekharyah 13:2]. And it is written: “He will swallow up death forever, and Hashem Elohim will wipe away the tear from every face, and the reproach of His people He shall remove from all the earth, for Hashem has spoken” (וּכְתִיב: בִּלַּע הַמָּוֶת לָנֶצַח, וּמָחָה יְיָ אֱלֹהִים דִּמְעָה מֵעַל כָּל פָּנִים, וְחֶרְפַּת עַמּוֹ יָסִיר מֵעַל כָּל הָאָרֶץ, כִּי יְיָ דִּבֶּר) [Yeshayahu 25:8]. And Kudsha Berikh Hu is destined to illuminate the moon and bring her out of darkness, on account of that wicked serpent (וְזַמִּין קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְאַנְהָרָא לְסִיהֲרָא וּלְאַפָּקָא לָהּ מֵחֲשׁוֹכָא, בְּגִין הַהוּא חִוְיָא בִּישָׁא), as it is written: “And the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days” (כְּמָה דִכְתִיב: וְהָיָה אוֹר הַלְּבָנָה כְּאוֹר הַחַמָּה, וְאוֹר הַחַמָּה יִהְיֶה שִׁבְעָתַיִם כְּאוֹר שִׁבְעַת הַיָּמִים) [Yeshayahu 30:26]. What is this “light”? It is that light which Kudsha Berikh Hu concealed in the work of Bereshit
“And Elohim blessed Noach and his sons, and said to them: be fruitful and multiply…” [Bereishit 9:1]. Rabbi Abba opened and said: “The blessing of Hashem, it makes rich, and He adds no sorrow with it” (רַבִּי אַבָּא פָּתַח וְאָמַר: בִּרְכַּת יְיָ הִיא תַעֲשִׁיר וְלֹא יוֹסִיף עֶצֶב עִמָּהּ) [Mishlei 10:22]. “The blessing of Hashem”-this is the Shekhinṭā, who is appointed over the blessings of the world (בִּרְכַּת יְיָ-דָּא שְׁכִינְתָּא דְּאִיהִי אִתְפַּקְּדָא עַל בִּרְכָאן דְּעָלְמָא), and from her all blessings go forth (וּמִנָּהּ נָפְקֵי בִּרְכָאן לְכֹלָּא).
