Rabbi Chizkiyah said: Whoever engages in Orayta at this hour (אָמַר רַבִּי חִזְקִיָּה כָּל מַאן דְּאִשְׁתַּדַּל בְּהַאי שַׁעֲתָא בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא), surely he has a constant portion in the world to come (וַדַּאי אִית לֵיהּ חוּלָקָא תָּדִיר בְּעָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי). Rabbi Yose said: What is the reason it is constant? He said to him: Thus I have learned-that at every midnight when Kudsha Berikh Hu awakens in the Garden of Eden (אָמַר לֵיהּ הָכִי אוֹלִיפְנָא, דְּכָל פַּלְגוּת לֵילְיָא כַּד קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אִתְעַר בְּגִנְתָא דְעֵדֶן), all the plantings of the garden are watered more than from that river called the ancient river, the river of delights, whose waters never cease (כָּל אִנּוּן נְטִיעָן דְּגִינְתָא אִשְׁתַּקְיָין יַתִּיר מֵהַהוּא נַחֲלָא דְּאִקְרֵי נַחַל קְדוּמִים, נַחַל עֲדָנִים דְּלָא פָּסְקוּ מֵימוֹי לְעָלְמִין). It is as if that stream flows over his head and waters him among the plantings of the Garden of Eden Rabbi Yose said: And not only that, since all the Righteous in the Garden of Eden listen to him (וְאָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסֵי: וְלֹא עוֹד, אֶלָּא הוֹאִיל וְכֻלְהוּ צַדִּיקַיָּא דְּבְגוֹ גִנְתָּא דְעֵדֶן צָיְיתִין לֵיהּ), they assign him a portion in the drink of that river (חוּלְקָא שַׁוְיָין לֵיהּ בְּהַהוּא שַׁקְיוּ דְּנַחֲלָא), so that he has a constant portion in the world to come (אִשְׁתְּכַח דְּאִית לֵיהּ חוּלָקָא תָּדִיר בְּעָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי).
Rabbi Abba was coming from Tiberias to Tronya, the town of his father-in-law (רַבִּי אַבָּא הֲוָה אָתֵי מִטְבֶרְיָה לְבֵי טְרוֹנְיָא דְּחָמוּי), and Rabbi Ya'akov his son was with him (וְרַבִּי יַעֲקֹב בְּרֵיהּ הֲוָה עִמֵּיהּ), and they lodged in the village of Tarsha (אִעָרְעוּ בִּכְפַר טַרְשָׁא). When they wanted to sleep, Rabbi Abba said to the owner of the house: Is there a rooster here? The homeowner said to him: Why? He said to him: Because I rise at midnight precisely [And I need a rooster to wake me up at midnight] (אָמַר לֵיהּ: בְּגִין דְּקָאִימְנָא בְּפַלְגוּת לֵילְיָא מַמָּשׁ). He said to him: It is not necessary, for I have a sign in the house-this basin before my bed I fill with water, and it drips drop by drop (אָמַר לֵיהּ: לָא אִצְטְרִיךְ, דְּהָא סִימָנָא לִי בְּבֵיתָא דְּהָדֵין טִקְלָא דְּקַמֵּי עַרְסָאי, מָלִינָא לֵיהּ מַיָא וְנָטִיף טִיף טִיף), and at exactly midnight all the water stops (בְּפַלְגוּת לֵילְיָא מַמָּשׁ אִתְרָקוּ כֻּלְהוּ מַיָא), and then I rise and give thanks to You for Your righteous judgments (חֲצוֹת לַיְלָה אָקוּם לְהוֹדוֹת לְךָ עַל מִשְׁפְּטֵי צִדְקֶךָ). What did David see, that he said “at midnight” and not “in the middle of the night”? Rather, at midnight precisely (אֶלָּא: חֲצוֹת לַיְלָה וַדַּאי), Kudsha Berikh Hu said so (לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אָמַר הָכִי). And is Kudsha Berikh Hu called that? Yes (וְכִי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא הָכִי אִקְרֵי אִין), for midnight itself is Kudsha Berikh Hu with His retinue (דְּהָא חֲצוֹת לַיְלָה מַמָּשׁ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אִשְׁתְּכַח וְסִיעָתָא דִילֵיהּ), and that is the hour when He enters the Garden of Eden to delight with the Righteous (וּכְדֵין הִיא שַׁעֲתָא דְּעָיִיל בְּגִנְתָא דְעֵדֶן לְאִשְׁתַּעְשְׁעָא עִם צַדִּיקַיָּא).
Rabbi Abba said to Rabbi Ya'akov: Surely he has joined with the Shekhinta and is united as one Come near and sit with him They said to him: Speak a word from your mouth, for you have spoken well From where have you this? He said to them: This word I learned from the Elders Furthermore, he said: At the first third of the night all judgments below are awakened and roam throughout the world At exactly midnight, Kudsha Berikh Hu awakens in the Garden of Eden and no judgments are found below And all the orders of above at night are found only at exactly midnight From where do we learn this? From Avraham, as it is written: “And he divided against them by night” (Bereshit 14) In Egypt: “And it came to pass at midnight” (Exodus 12) And in many other places in the Orayta, this is what is found And David knew (וְדָוִד הֲוָה יָדַע). But how did he know? Rather, thus said the Elder: His kingship depended on this night And therefore he stood at that hour and sang praises And for this reason, Kudsha Berikh Hu is called midnight itself (וּלְהָכִי קָרְיֵיהּ לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא: חֲצוֹת לַיְלָה מַמָּשׁ), “At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto You…” (Psalms 119) (אָקוּם לְהוֹדוֹת לְךָ וְגו׳), for all judgments hang from there, and the judgments of Malkhuth are found from there (דְּהָא כָּל דִּינִין תַּלְיָין מֵהָכָא, וְדִינִין דְּמַלְכוּתָא מֵהָכָא מִשְׁתַּכְּחִין). And at that hour David would bind himself and rise and say praises Rabbi Abba came and kissed him (אֲתָא רַבִּי אַבָּא וּנְשָׁקֵיהּ), he said to him: Surely it is so-blessed is the Merciful One who brought me here (אָמַר לֵיהּ: וַדַּאי הָכִי הוּא, בָּרוּךְ רַחֲמָנָא דְּשַׁדְּרַנִי הָכָא).
Come and see: night is judgment in every place (תָּא חֲזֵי: לַיְלָה דִּינָא בְּכָל אֲתַר), and this we have already explained (וְהָא אוֹקִימְנָא מִילֵּי), and so it certainly is (וְהָכִי הוּא וַדַּאי), and this was awakened before Rabbi Shim'on (וְהָא אִתְעַר קַמֵּי דְרַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן). That child, the son of that man, said: If so, why is it written midnight? He said to him: It has already been said that at midnight the kingship of heaven is awakened
He said: I have heard a word Rabbi Abba said to him: Say it, my son, for a word from your mouth is the sound of a glowing ember He said: I have heard that night is the judgment of Malkhuth, and everywhere it is judgment And that it says midnight, because it draws from two aspects-judgment and Chesed Surely, the first half is judgment (וַדַּאי פַּלְגוּתָא קַדְמִיתָא דִּינָא הוּא), for the latter half is the shining of the face from the side of Chesed (דְּהָא פַּלְגוּתָא אָחֳרָא נְהִירוּ אַנְפָּהָא בְּסִטְרָא דְּחֶסֶד), and for this reason it is written midnight-surely (וְעַל דָּא: חֲצוֹת לַיְלָה כְּתִיב וַדַּאי).
