Come and see: if Efron had seen in the cave what Avraham saw in it (תָּא חֲזֵי, אִי עֶפְרוֹן הֲוָה חָמֵי בִּמְעַרְתָּא מַה דְּהֲוָה חָמֵי אַבְרָהָם בָּהּ), he would never have sold it (לָא יַזְבִּין לָהּ לְעָלְמִין). But certainly he saw nothing in it at all (אֶלָּא וַדַּאי לָא חָמָא בָהּ וְלֹא כְלוּם), for nothing is revealed except to its rightful owner (דְּהָא לֵית מִלָּה אִתְגַּלְּיָא אֶלָּא לְמָארִיָּהּ), and therefore to Avraham it was revealed and not to Efron (וּבְגִין כָּךְ לְאַבְרָהָם אִתְגַלְּיָיא וְלָא לְעֶפְרוֹן). To Avraham it was revealed because it was his (לְאַבְרָהָם אִתְגַלְּיָיא דִּילֵיהּ הֲוָה); to Efron it was not revealed, because he had no portion in it (לְעֶפְרוֹן לָא הֲוַת אִתְגַלְּיָא לֵיהּ דְּלָא הֲוָה לֵיהּ חוּלָקָא בֵּיהּ). And for that reason nothing was revealed to Efron at all, and he saw only darkness-and on that account, he sold it And the reason Avraham did not initially ask to purchase it outright was (וּמַה דְּלָא תָּבַע אַבְרָהָם בְּקַדְמִיתָא דְּיַזְבִּין לֵיהּ זָבִין), that Avraham only said: “And let him give me the cave of Machpelah which belongs to him…” (דְּהָא אַבְרָהָם לָא קָאָמַר אֶלָּא: וְיִתֶּן לִי אֶת מְעָרַת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה אֲשֶׁר לוֹ וְגו׳), “for full silver let him give it to me…” But he (Efron) said: “The field I have given you, and the cave that is in it-to you I have given it…” Because all of it was repulsive to Efron, who did not know what it was And come and see: when Avraham entered the cave at first (וְתָּא חֲזֵי, כַּד עָאל אַבְרָהָם בִּמְעַרְתָּא בְּקַדְמִיתָא), he saw there a light (חָמָא תַּמָּן נְהוֹרָא), and dust arose before him (וְאִתְרְמֵי עַפְרָא קַמֵּיהּ), and two graves were revealed to him (וְאִתְגְּלִי לֵיהּ תְּרִין קִבְרִין). At that moment, Adam arose in his image and appeared to Avraham face to face (אַדְהָכִי אִסְתַּלַּק אָדָם בִּדִיוּקְנֵיהּ וְחָמָא לֵיהּ לְאַבְרָהָם וְחַיֵּיךְ), and by that Avraham knew that there he was destined to be buried (וּבֵיהּ הֲוָה יָדַע אַבְרָהָם דְּתַמָּן הֲוָה זַמִּין לְאִתְקְבָרָא).
He said to him: Avraham, by your leave, a bundle of bones is bound here He said to him: Kudsha Berikh Hu has hidden me here, and from that time until now I have been hidden like a peeled garlic clove, until you came into the world (אָמַר לֵיהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא טְמָרַנִּי הָכָא וּמֵהַהוּא זִמְנָא עַד הַשְׁתָּא אִתְטַמַּרְנָא כְּגִילְדָא דְּקִירְטָא עַד דַּאֲתִית אַנְתְּ בְּעַלְמָא), now, from here onward, behold, permanence is mine and for the world, because of you (הַשְׁתָּא מִכָּאן וָאֵילָךְ הָא קִיּוּמָא לִי וּלְעַלְמָא הֲוָה בְּגִינָךְ).
See what is written: “And the field and the cave within it were established…” - actual permanence came to it, something it did not have until now Rabbi Abba said (רַבִּי אַבָּא אָמַר): “And the field arose” (וַיָּקָם הַשָּׂדֶה), certainly an actual rising (וַדַּאי קִימָה מַמָּשׁ), that it stood and was elevated before Avraham (דְּקָם וְאִסְתַּלַּק קַמֵּיהּ דְּאַבְרָהָם), because until now nothing had been seen there (בְּגִין דְּעַד הַשְׁתָּא לָא אִתְחֲזֵי תַּמָּן כְּלוּם), and now that which had been hidden arose and was revealed, and then all arose according to its order (וְהַשְׁתָּא מַה דְּהֲוָה טָמִיר קָם וְאִסְתַּלִּיק, וּכְדֵין קָם כֹּלָּא בְּנִמּוּסוֹי).
Rabbi Shim'on said: At the moment when Avraham entered the cave and brought Sarah there Adam and Chavah arose and did not consent to be buried there They said: And shall we now be in shame before Kudsha Berikh Hu in that world because of the sin we caused? (אָמְרוּ: וּמַה אֲנַן בְּכִסּוּפָא קַמֵּי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא בְּהַהוּא עַלְמָא בְּגִין הַהוּא חוֹבָא דְּגָרִימְנָא), and now shall another shame be added to us in the face of the righteous deeds of this woman?
