Daf 130a (דַּף קל׳ ע״א)

Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי): one who sanctifies himself and guards himself in this world from becoming defiled (מַאן דְּאִתְקַדַּשׁ וְנָטִיר גַּרְמֵיהּ בְּהַאי עַלְמָא דְּלָא אִסְתָּאַב), his dwelling in that world is among those supernal holy ones who constantly perform missions (מְדוֹרֵיהּ בְּהַהוּא עַלְמָא בֵּין אִינוּן קַדִּישִׁין עִלָּאִין וְעָבְדִין שְׁלִיחוּתָא תָּדִיר), and these dwell in the courtyard, as it is said (וְאִלֵּין קָיְימֵי בַּחָצֵר כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר): “The courtyard of the Mishkan” (Exodus 27) (אֵת חֲצַר הַמִּשְׁכָּן). And there are others who are further inward, for they are not in the courtyard but in the house, as it is said (וְאִית אָחֳרָנִין דְּאִינוּן לְגוֹ יַתִּיר, דְּלָאו אִינוּן בַּחָצֵר אֶלָּא בְּבֵיתָא כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר): “We shall be sated with the goodness of Your house” (Psalms 65) (נִשְׂבְּעָה בְּטוּב בֵּיתֶךָ). David said: “We shall be sated with the goodness of Your house” (אָמַר דָּוִד: נִשְׂבְּעָה בְּטוּב בֵּיתֶךָ); since it already says “he shall dwell in Your courtyards”, why does it then say “we shall be sated with the goodness of Your house”? (כֵּיוָן דְּאָמַר: יִשְׁכֹּן חֲצֵרֶיךָ, אַמַּאי כְּתִיב: נִשְׂבְּעָה בְּטוּב בֵּיתֶךָ), it should have said “he shall be sated with the goodness of Your house” as it says “he shall dwell” (יִשְׂבַּע בְּטוּב בֵּיתֶךָ מִיבָּעֵי לֵיהּ כְּמָה דִכְתִיב: יִשְׁכֹּן).

Rather, we have learned: There is no sitting in the Azarah except for kings of the House of David alone (אֶלָּא הָא תָּנִינָן: לֵית יְשִׁיבָה בָּעֲזָרָה אֶלָּא לְמַלְכֵי בֵּית דָּוִד בִּלְחוּדַיְיהוּ). And there is a place for the Supernal Pious who enter further inward (וְאִית אֲתַר לַחֲסִידֵי עֶלְיוֹנִין דְּעַיְילֵי לְגוֹ), and what are these? As it is written (וּמַאי אִינוּן, כְּדִכְתִיב): “And those who encamped before the Mishkan eastward, before the Tent of Meeting, to the east: Moshe and Aharon and his sons…” And how many dwellings upon dwellings and lights upon lights are arrayed in that world (וְכַמָּה מָדוֹרִין עַל מָדוֹרִין וּנְהוֹרִין עַל נְהוֹרִין מִתְפָּרְשָׁן בְּהַהוּא עַלְמָא), and each one is ashamed before the light of his companion (וְכָל חַד אִכְסִיף מִנְּהוֹרָא דְּחַבְרֵיהּ); just as deeds are distinguished in this world, so too are the places and lights distinguished in that world (כְּמָה דְּעוֹבָדִין אִתְפָּרְשָׁן בְּהַאי עַלְמָא, הָכִי נָמֵי דּוּכְתִּין וּנְהוֹרִין מִתְפָּרְשָׁן בְּהַהוּא עָלְמָא).

And come and see, behold it has been taught (וְתָא חֲזֵי, הָא אִתְּמָר), that even in this world, when a man sleeps upon his bed (דְּאָפִילּוּ בְּהַאי עַלְמָא כַּד בַּר נָשׁ נָּאִים עַל עַרְסֵיהּ), and the Neshamot are required to wander in the world (וְנִשְׁמָתִין אִצְטְרִיכוּ לְאִתְשׁוֹטְטָא בְּעַלְמָא), and they go out from within the body (וְנָפְקוּ מִגּוֹ גּוּפָא), not every Neshamah ascends and wanders to behold the glorious radiance of the Face of Atik Yomin (לָאו כָּל נִשְׁמָתָא וְנִשְׁמָתָא סַלְקָא וְשַׁטְיָא לְמֶחזֵי בִּיקָר סֵבֶר אַפֵּי דְּעַתִּיק יוֹמִין), but only as is drawn constantly and according to one’s deeds - thus his Neshamah ascends (אֶלָּא כְּמָא דְאִתְמְשִׁיךְ תָּדִיר וּכְפוּם עוֹבָדֵי, הָכִי נִשְׁמָתֵיהּ סָלְקָא). If he is defiled (אִי אִסְתָּאַב אִיהוּ), while he is sleeping and the Neshamah departs (נָאִים וְנִשְׁמָתָא נָפְקָא), then all those impure spirits seize it (וְכָל אִינוּן רוּחִין מְסָאֲבִין נָקְטִין לָהּ), and it clings to them in those lower degrees that roam through the world (וְאִתְדַּבְּקַת בְּהוּ בְּאִינוּן דַּרְגִּין תַּתָּאִין דְּשָׁטְיָין בְּעַלְמָא), and they inform it of matters that are about to come into the world (וְאִינוּן מוֹדִיעִין לָהּ מִלִּין דְּאִינוּן קְרֵיבִין לְמֵיתֵי בְּעַלְמָא), and at times they inform it of things truthfully, and she believes them (וּלְזִמְנִין דְּמוֹדְעִין לָהּ מִלִּין כְּדִיבָן וְחָיְיכָן בָּהּ), and this has already been established (וְהָא אוּקְמוּהָ). But if the man is meritorious when he sleeps (וְאִי זָכֵי בַּר נָשׁ כַּד אִיהוּ נָאִים), and his Neshamah ascends (וְנִשְׁמָתֵיהּ סָלְקָא), she goes and roams and pierces through those impure spirits (אָזְלָא וְשָׁטְיָא וּבָקְעָא בֵּין אִלֵּין רוּחִין מְסָאֲבִין), and all of them proclaim and say: Clear a path! Clear a path! This one is not from our side (וְכֻלְּהוּ מַכְרִיזִין וְאָמְרִין: פַּנּוּן אֲתַר, פַּנּוּן לָאו דָּא מִסִּטְרָנָא), and she ascends among the supernal holy ones (וְאִיהִי סָלְקָא בֵּין אִינוּן קַדִּישִׁין), and a word of truth is revealed to her (וּמוֹדָעֵי לָהּ מִלָּה חָדָא דִקְשׁוֹט).
