Daf 140a (דַּף ק״ם ע״א)
Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי), Kudsha Berikh Hu did not judge Adam Kadma’ah (לָא דָן קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְאָדָם קַדְמָאָה) until He commanded him for his own benefit (עַד דְּפָּקִּיד לֵיהּ לְתוֹעַלְתֵּיהּ), that he not turn his heart and Desire to another path (דְּלָא יִסְטֵי לִבֵּיהּ וּרְעוּתֵיהּ לְאֹרַח אָחֳרָא), so that he not become corrupted (בְּגִין דְּלָא יִסְתָּאַב). But he did not guard himself (וְאִיהוּ לָא אִסְתַּמַּר), and transgressed the commandments of his Master (וְעֲבַר עַל פִּקּוּדֵי דְמָארֵיהּ), and afterward he was judged (וּלְבָתַר כֵּן דָּן לֵיהּ דִּינָא). And even with all this (וְעִם כָּל דָּא), He did not judge him as he deserved (לָא דָן לֵיהּ כְּדְקָא חָזֵי לֵיהּ), but prolonged His wrath with him (וְאוֹרִיךְ עִמֵּיהּ רוּגְזֵיהּ), and one day was fulfilled-one thousand years (וְאִתְקְיַּים יוֹמָא חַד דְּאִיהוּ אֶלֶף שְׁנִין), except for the seventy years he gave to King David (בַּר אִינוּן שִׁבְעִים שָׁנִין דְּמָסַר לֵיהּ לְדָוִד מַלְכָּא), for he had nothing of his own (דְּלָא הֲוָה לֵיהּ מִגַּרְמֵיהּ כְּלוּם).
In this manner (כְּגַוְונָא דָא), He does not judge a human according to the evil he constantly does (לָא דָן לֵיהּ לְבַּר נָשׁ כְּעוֹבָדוֹי בִּישִׁין דְּאִיהוּ עָבִיד תָּדִיר), for if He did, the world could not endure (דְּאִי הָכִי לָא יָכִיל עַלְמָא לְאִתְקַיְימָא), but Kudsha Berikh Hu lengthens His wrath with the Righteous (אֶלָּא קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אָרִיךְ רוּגְזֵיהּ עִם צַדִּיקַיָּא), and with the Wicked even more than with the Righteous (וְעִם רַשִּׁיעַיָּא יַתִּיר מִצַּדִּיקַיָּא). With the Wicked so they return in complete Teshuvah (עִם רַשִּׁיעַיָּא בְּגִין דִּיתוּבוּן בִּתְיוּבְתָּא שְׁלֵימָתָא), that they endure in this world and the next (דְּיִתְקַיְימוּן בְּהַאי עַלְמָא וּבְעַלְמָא דְאָתֵי), as it is written: “As I live, says Hashem… if I desire… except in the return of the wicked from his way, and he shall live” (Ezekiel 33) (כְּמָה דִכְתִיב חַי אָנִי נְאֻם יְיָ וְגו׳ אִם אֶחְפֹּץ וְגו׳ כִּי אִם בְּשׁוּב רָשָׁע מִדַּרְכּוֹ וְחָיָה). “And he shall live”-in this world (וְחָיָה בְּעַלְמָא דֵין), and he shall live in the World to Come (וְחָיָה בְּעַלְמָא דְאָתֵי), and for this He always prolongs His anger toward them (וְעַל דָּא אוֹרִיךְ רוּגְזֵיהּ לוֹן תָּדִיר). Or because from them may emerge a good shoot in the world (אוֹ בְּגִין דְּיִפּוּק מִנְּהוֹן גִּזְעָא טָבָא בְּעַלְמָא), like Avraham who came from Terach (כְּמָה דְאַפִּיק אַבְרָהָם מִתֶּרַח), who is a good shoot, a good root, and a good portion for the world (דְּאִיהוּ גִּזְעָא טָבָא, וְשָׁרָשָׁא וְחוּלָקָא טָבָא לְעַלְמָא). But Kudsha Berikh Hu is exacting with the Righteous always (אֲבָל קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא מְדַקְדֵּק עִם צַדִּיקַיָּא תָּדִיר), in all the actions they do (בְּכָל עוֹבָדִין דְּאִינוּן עָבְדִין), because He knows they will not turn right or left (בְּגִין דְּיָדַע דְּלָא יִסְטוּן לְיָמִינָא וּשְׂמָאלָא), and therefore He examines them (וּבְגִין כָּךְ אַבְחִין לוֹן). Not for His own sake (לָאו בְּגִינֵיהּ), for He knows their inclination and the strength of their faith(דְּהָא אִיהוּ יָדַע יִצְרָא וְתוּקְפָא דִמְהֵימְנוּתָא דִלְהוֹן), but in order to exalt their heads through them (אֶלָּא בְּגִין לַאֲרָמָא רִישֵׁיהוֹן בְּגִינַיְיהוּ).
