And because of this, heaven and earth and all their hosts stand upon this covenant (וְעַל דָּא, שְׁמַיָא וְאַרְעָא, וְכָל חֵילֵיהוֹן, כֻּלְּהוּ קָיְימָא עַל קִיּוּמָא דָא), as it is written: If not for My covenant day and night, I would not have set the ordinances of heaven and earth (דִּכְתִיב: אִם לֹא בְרִיתִי יוֹמָם וָלַיְלָה חֻקּוֹת שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ לֹא שָׂמְתִּי) (Yirmeyahu 33). Therefore, one must be vigilant in this, as it has been established Thus it is written: And Yosef was handsome of form and appearance… (Bereishit 39) and afterwards: his master's wife lifted her eyes to Yosef... and spoke to him day by day
Rabbi El'azar opened and said: (רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר פָּתַח וְאָמַר:) (Mishlei 6) To guard you from the evil woman… Fortunate are the Righteous who know the ways of Kudsha Berikh Hu to walk in them (זַכָּאִין אִינוּן צַדִּיקַיָּא, דְּיָדְעֵי אָרְחוֹי דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְמֵיזַל בְּהוּ), because they engage in Orayta day and night (בְּגִין דְּאִינוּן מִשְׁתַּדְּלֵי בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא יְמָמָא וְלֵילְיָא). For whoever engages in Orayta day and night, inherits two worlds (דְּכָל מַאן דְּאִשְׁתַּדַּל בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא יוֹמֵי וְלֵילֵי, אַחְסִין תְּרֵין עָלְמִין): the upper world and the lower world (עַלְמָא עִלָּאָה, וְעַלְמָא תַּתָּאָה). He inherits this world, even if not for its own sake (אַחְסִין הַאי עַלְמָא, אַף עַל גַּב דְּלָא אִתְעַסַּק בָּהּ בַּר נָשׁ לִשְׁמָהּ), and he inherits the upper world when he learns for its own sake (וְאַחְסִין הַהוּא עַלְמָא עִלָּאָה, כַּד אִתְעַסַּק בָּהּ בַּר נָשׁ לִשְׁמָהּ).
Come and see what is written: (תָּא חֲזֵי, מַה כְּתִיב:) (Mishlei 3) Length of days in her right, in her left wealth and honor (אֹרֶךְ יָמִים בִּימִינָהּ בִּשְׂמֹאלָהּ עשֶׁר וְכָבוֹד). Length of days in her right-one who walks on the right side of Orayta, he has eternal life in the World to Come There he merits the glory of Orayta, which is the supreme crown over all The crown of Orayta is there in that world In her left, wealth and honor-in this world (בִּשְׂמֹאלָהּ עשֶׁר וְכָבוֹד, בְּהַאי עַלְמָא), for even without learning for its own sake, he merits wealth and honor here (דְּאַף עַל גַּב דְּלָא אִתְעַסַּק בָּהּ לִשְׁמָהּ, זָכֵי בְּהַאי עַלְמָא בְּעוּתְרָא וִיקָרָא). For when Rabbi Ḥiyya came from there to the Land of Yisrael (דְּהָא רִבִּי חִיָּיא כַּד אֲתָא מֵהָתָם לְאַרְעָא דְיִשְׂרָאֵל), he engaged in Orayta until his face shone like the sun (קָרָא בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, עַד דְּהֲווּ אַנְפּוֹי נְהִירִין כְּשִׁמְשָׁא). And when all those who studied Orayta stood before him (וְכַד הֲווּ קָיְימִין קַמֵּיהּ כָּל אִינוּן דְּלָעָאן בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא), he would say: this one studied for its own sake, and that one did not (הֲוָה אָמַר: דָּא אִשְׁתַּדַּל בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא לִשְׁמָהּ, וְדָא לָא אִשְׁתַּדַּל לִשְׁמָהּ). And he would pray for the one who studied lishmah, that he should remain so always and merit the World to Come (וְהֲוָה צַלֵּי עַל הַהוּא דְּאִתְעַסַּק לִשְׁמָהּ, דְּלֶיהוֵי הָכִי תָּדִיר, וְיִזְכֵּי לְעַלְמָא דְאָתֵי), and he would pray for the one who did not study lishmah, that he should come to study lishmah and merit eternal life (וְצַלֵּי עַל הַהוּא דְּלָא אִתְעַסַּק בָּהּ לִשְׁמָהּ, דְּיֵיתֵי לְאִתְעַסְּקָא בָּהּ לִשְׁמָהּ, וְיִזְכֵּי לְחַיֵּי עָלְמָא).
One day, he saw a student who was learning Orayta but whose face was yellow-green He said: surely this one is entertaining sinful thoughts He brought him near, and drew him close with words of Orayta (אָחִיד לֵיהּ לְקַמֵּיהּ, וְאַמְשִׁיךְ עֲלֵיהּ בְּמִלִּין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא), until his spirit was calmed within him (עַד דְּאִתְיַישַׁב רוּחֵיהּ בְּגַוֵּיהּ). From that day forward, he directed himself not to chase after those evil thoughts (מִן הַהוּא יוֹמָא וּלְהָלְאָה, שַׁוֵּי עַל רוּחֵיהּ, דְּלָא יִרְדֹּף בָּתַר אִינוּן הִרְהוּרִין בִּישִׁין), and strove in Orayta lishmah (for its own sake) (וְיִשְׁתַּדַּל בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא לִשְׁמָהּ). Rabbi Yosi said: when a person sees that evil thoughts come upon him, he should engage in Orayta, and then they will depart from him Rabbi El'azar said: when that evil side comes to entice a person, let him draw himself to Orayta, and it will depart from him
Come and see, for we have learned: when this evil side stands before Kudsha Berikh Hu to accuse the world due to wicked deeds Kudsha Berikh Hu has mercy on the world and gives time to mankind to be rescued from him Then he cannot rule over them or their actions What is this time? To engage in Orayta and be saved from him From where do we learn this? It is written: For a mitzvah is a lamp and Torah is light, and the way of life are rebukes of discipline (Mishlei 6). What is written after it? To guard you from the evil woman, from the smoothness of the foreign tongue And this is the impure side, the other side (וְדָא הוּא סִטְרָא מְסָאֲבָא, סִטְרָא אָחֳרָא), which stands always before Kudsha Berikh Hu to accuse for the sins of mankind (דְּאִיהִי קָיְימָא תָּדִיר קַמֵּיהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְאַסְטָאָה עַל חוֹבֵיהוֹן דִּבְנֵי נָשָׁא). It constantly accuses below among people (וְקָיְימָא תָּדִיר לְאַסְטָאָה לְתַתָּא לִבְנִי נָשָׁא), and stands always above to remind the sins of mankind and accuse them for their deeds (קָיְימָא תָּדִיר לְעֵילָא, בְּגִין לְאַדְכָּרָא חוֹבֵיהוֹן דִּבְנֵי נָשָׁא, וּלְאַסְטָאָה לוֹן עַל עוֹבָדֵיהוֹן). And since they were handed over into her domain, like what happened to Job (וּבְגִין דְּאִתְיְהִיבוּ בִּרְשׁוּתֵיהּ, כְּמָה דְּעֲבַד לֵיהּ לְאִיּוֹב), so she stands over them to accuse and recall their sins in all that they do (וְכֵן קָיְימָא עֲלַיְיהוּ לְאַסְטָאָה וּלְאַדְכָּרָא חוֹבֵיהוֹן בְּכָל מַה דְּעֲבָדוּ), in those times when Kudsha Berikh Hu stands over them in judgment (בְּאִינוּן זִמְנִין דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא קָיְימָא עֲלַיְיהוּ בְּדִינָא), then she rises to accuse and recall their sins (כְּדֵין קָאִים לְאַסְטָאָה לוֹן וּלְאַדְכָּרָא חוֹבֵיהוֹן). But Kudsha Berikh Hu has mercy on Yisrael and gives them time to be saved from her How? Through the shofar on Rosh Hashanah (וּבְמָּה, בַּשּׁוֹפָר בְּיוֹמָא דְרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה), and on Yom Kippur through the scapegoat which is given to her (וּבְיוֹמָא דְכִפּוּרֵי בְּשָׂעִיר הַמִּשְׁתַּלֵּחַ דְּיָהֲבִין לֵיהּ), in order to separate her from them, and to engage her in that portion (בְּגִין לְאִתְפְּרָשָׁא מִנַּיְיהוּ, וּלְאִשְׁתַּדְּלָא בְּהַהוּא חוּלָקֵיהּ), and this has already been established (וְהָא אוּקְמוּהָ).
Come and see, what is written? (תָּא חֲזֵי, מַה כְּתִיב) (Mishlei 5): Her feet go down to death, her steps support She’ol (רַגְלֶיהָ יוֹרְדוֹת מָוֶת שְׁאוֹל צְעָדֶיהָ יִתְמוֹכוּ). And in the mystery of faith, what is written? (וּבְרָזָא דִּמְהֵימְנוּתָא מַה כְּתִיב) (Mishlei 3): Her ways are ways of pleasantness and all her paths are peace (דְּרָכֶיהָ דַּרְכֵי נוֹעַם וְכָל נְתִיבוֹתֶיהָ שָׁלוֹם). These are the paths and ways of Orayta, and all is one (וְאִלֵּין אִינוּן אָרְחִין וּשְׁבִילִין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, וְכֹלָּא חַד) this is shalom, and that is death, and all is opposites, one from the other (הַאי שָׁלוֹם וְהַאי מָוֶת, וְכֹלָּא הִיפּוּכָן דָּא מִן דָּא). Fortunate is the portion of Yisrael, who cleave to Kudsha Berikh Hu properly (זַכָּאָה חוּלְקֵהוֹן דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, דְּאִינוּן מִתְדַּבְּקִין בֵּיהּ בְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא כְּדְקָא חָזֵי), and He gives them time to be saved from all other sides of the world (וְיָהִיב לוֹן עֵיטָא לְאִשְׁתְּזָבָא מִכָּל סִטְרִין אָחֳרָנִין דְּעַלְמָא), because they are a holy people, the heritage and portion of Kudsha Berikh Hu (בְּגִין דְּאִינוּן עַמָּא קַדִּישָׁא לְאַחְסַנְתֵּיהּ וְחוּלָקֵיהּ), and therefore He grants them time in all things (וְעַל דָּא יָהִיב לוֹן עֵיטָא בְּכֹלָּא). Fortunate are they in this world and in the World to Come
Come and see: when that evil side descends and roams the world (תָּא חֲזֵי, כַּד הַאי סִטְרָא בִישָׁא נָחַת וְשָׁאט בְּעָלְמָא), and sees the deeds of mankind, who all deviate from their ways in the world (וְחָמֵי עוֹבָדִין דִּבְנֵי נָשָׁא, דְּאִינוּן כֻּלְּהוּ סָטְאִין אָרְחַיְיהוּ בְּעָלְמָא), he ascends above and accuses them (סָלִיק לְעֵילָא וְאַסְטִין לוֹן). And were it not that Kudsha Berikh Hu has mercy on His handiwork (וְאִלְמָלֵא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא חָיִיס עַל עוֹבְדֵי יְדוֹי), they would not remain in the world (לָא יִשְׁתָּאֲרוּן בְּעָלְמָא).
