And it was after these things, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt sinned, etc. (וַיְהִי אַחַר הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה חָטְאוּ מַשְׁקֵה מֶלֶךְ מִצְרַיִם וְגו׳) (Bereishit 40) Rabbi Yehudah opened: (רִבִּי יְהוּדָה פָּתַח:) (Amos 3) Shall a lion roar in the forest when it has no prey? Will a young lion cry out from his den unless he has taken something? Shall a lion roar in the forest…
Come and see how much men must be mindful in the service of Kudsha Berikh Hu For whoever labors in Orayta and in the service of Kudsha Berikh Hu, His awe and fear rest upon all For when Kudsha Berikh Hu created the world, He made all creatures of the world each in its proper form Then He created man in the supernal image (וּלְבָתַר בָּרָא לֵיהּ לְבַר נָשׁ בְּדִיוּקְנָא עִלָּאָה), and appointed him over all in that image (וְשַׁלְטֵיהּ עַל כֻּלְּהוּ בְּדִיוּקְנָא דָּא). As long as man stands properly in the world, all creatures lift their heads and gaze upon the supernal form of man (דְּכָל זִמְנָא דְּבַר נָשׁ קָאֵים בְּעַלְמָא, כָּל אִינוּן בִּרְיָין דְּעַלְמָא זָקְפִין רֵישָׁא, וּמִסְתַּכְּלָן בְּדִיוּקְנָא עִלָּאָה דְּבַר נָשׁ), and then they all tremble before him (כְּדֵין כֻּלְּהוּ דַּחֲלִין וְזָעִין מִקַּמֵּיהּ), as it is written: And your fear and dread shall be upon all beasts of the earth and all birds of the sky, etc. (Bereishit 9). And these things-when they behold in him this form and the soul within him
Rabbi El'azar said: even though the soul is not in him, the Righteous do not change from the image they had initially But when a person does not walk in the ways of Orayta, that holy image is changed for him Then beasts and birds of the sky can rule over him (וּכְדֵין חֵיוַת בְּרָא וְעוֹפָא דִּשְׁמַיָּא יָכְלִין לְשַׁלְּטָאָה עֲלֵיהּ), because that holy form has been altered-his human image has been exchanged (בְּגִין דְּאִתְחַלַּף לֵיהּ הַאי דִּיוּקְנָא קַדִּישָׁא, אִתְחַלַּף לֵיהּ הַאי דִּיוּקְנָא דְּבַר נָשׁ).
Come and see: Kudsha Berikh Hu altered actions above and below (וְתָּא חֲזֵי, קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אַחְלַף עוֹבָדִין דִּלְעֵילָא וְתַתָּא), in order to restore things to their proper place, and to make His will manifest in all the deeds of the world (בְּגִין לְאַהֲדָרָא מִלִּין לְאַתְרַיְיהוּ, וּלְאִשְׁתַּכְּחָא רְעוּתֵיהּ בְּכָל עוֹבָדֵי דְּעַלְמָא). Daniel’s form did not change when he was cast into the lions’ den, and because of this he was saved
Rabbi Ḥizkiyah said: If so, isn’t it written: My God sent His angel and closed the mouths of the lions and they did not harm me? (Daniel 6) It implies that it was because of the angel who closed their mouths that he wasn’t harmed He said to him: That is why he was not harmed-because that form of the meritorious man is itself truly an angel (אָמַר לֵיהּ: בְּגִין דָּא לָא אִתְחַבַּל, דְּהָא הַהוּא דִּיוּקְנֵיהּ דְּבַר נָשׁ זַכָּאָה, אִיהוּ מַלְאָכָא מַמָּשׁ), which closes their mouths, restrains them, and protects him, that they not harm him (דִּסְגִּיר פּוּמָא, וְקָשִׁיר לוֹן, לְנַטְרָא לֵיהּ, דְּלָא יְחַבְּלוּן לֵיהּ). And because of this: My God sent His angel-this refers to the one in whom all forms of the world are engraved, who strengthened His form in me, and they could not overpower me, and closed their mouths. Therefore, He sent His angel indeed And this angel is the one in whom all forms are engraved (וְהַאי מַלְאָכָא, הַהוּא דְּכָל דִּיוּקְנִין מִתְחַקְּקָן בֵּיהּ), as it is written: (Tehillim 110) He will judge among the nations, filling with corpses (דִּכְתִיב: יָדִין בַּגּוֹיִם מָלֵא גְוִיּוֹת). This is the one before whom no forms of the world are altered Therefore, a man must guard his ways and paths (וְעַל דָּא מִבָּעֵי לֵיהּ לְבַר נָשׁ, לְאִסְתַּמְּרָא אָרְחוֹי וּשְׁבִילוֹי), so he does not sin before his Master and remains established in the form of Adam (בְּגִין דְּלָא יֶחטָא קַמֵּיהּ דְּמָארֵיהּ, וְיִתְקַיֵּים בְּדִּיוּקְנָא דְּאָדָם).
Come and see: Yeḥezkel guarded his mouth from forbidden foods, as it is written: And flesh of detestable things did not enter my mouth (Yeḥezkel 4), he merited and was called Son of Adam Daniel-what is written regarding him? And Daniel placed upon his heart not to be defiled by the king’s bread and the wine of his feasts (Daniel 1), he too merited and remained in the image of Adam For all things in the world are in awe of the form of Adam, who rules over all, and he is king over all
Rabbi Yosei said: Therefore, a person must guard himself from sin, not veering to the right or left And even with all that, a person must examine his sins daily For when a person rises from his bed, two witnesses stand before him and go with him the entire day When a person stands, those witnesses say to him at the moment he opens his eyes: Let your eyes look straight ahead and your eyelids direct in front of you (Mishlei 4). When he sets his feet to walk, they say: Weigh the path of your feet… (Mishlei 4). Therefore, each day a person must guard himself from sin Every day, when night comes, he must reflect and examine all that he did that day (בְּכָל יוֹמָא וְיוֹמָא, כַּד אָתֵי לֵילְיָא, בָּעֵי לְאִסְתַּכְּלָא וּלְמִבְדַּק, בְּכָל מַה דְּעֲבַד כָּל הַהוּא יוֹמָא), in order to repent and reflect on them continually, to stand before his Master (בְּגִין דְּיֵיתוּב מִנַּיְיהוּ, וְיִסְתַּכֵּל בְּהוּ תָּדִיר, בְּגִין דְּיֵיתוּב קַמֵּי מָארֵיהּ), as it is said: My sin is always before me (כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר: וְחַטָּאתִי נֶגְדִּי תָמִיד) (Tehillim 51), in order to return from them
