A second adornment below, the adornment of the bride which Shlomo spoke in Shir haShirim, this adornment is more revealed (תִּקּוּנָא אָחֳרָא תַּתָּאָה, תִּקּוּנָא דְּכַלָּה דְּקָאֲמַר שְׁלֹמֹה בְּשִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים, הַאי תִּקּוּנָא דְּאִתְגַּלְּיָיא יַתִּיר), and this adornment is by the twelve tribes that are beneath her, and the adornment of her body (וְתִקּוּנָא דָא בִּתְרֵיסַר שִׁבְטִין דְּאִינוּן תְּחוֹתָהּ, וְתִקּוּנָא דְגוּפָא דִילָהּ).

Rabbi Abba opened and said (I Kings 7:23–25): “And he made the sea of cast metal…”, and it is written: “It stood upon twelve oxen, three facing north, three facing west, three facing south…” And it is written: “And the sea was above them…”, and it is written: “And the twelve oxen were beneath the sea” (וְהַיָּם עֲלֵיהֶם מִלְמַעְלָה וְגו׳, וּכְתִיב: וְאֶת הַבָּקָר שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר תַּחַת הַיָּם).

It stood upon twelve oxen-so it is certainly, for this sea is constructed upon twelve, into two worlds (עוֹמֵד עַל שְׁנֵי עָשָׂר בָּקָר, הָכִי הוּא וַדַּאי, דְּדָא יָם מִתַּקְנָא בְּי״ב בִּתְרֵין עָלְמִין), twelve above are appointed (בִּתְרֵיסַר לְעֵילָא רְתִיכִין מְמַנָּן). Above are twelve, and below are twelve tribes When Ya‘aqov saw the supernal adornment and saw the Shekhinṭa standing before him, he wished to complete her adornment (כֵּיוָן דְּחָמָא יַעֲקֹב תִּקּוּנָא עִלָּאָה, וְחָמָא שְׁכִינְתָּא קָאִים לְקֳבְלֵיהּ, בָּעָא לְאַשְׁלָמָא תִּקּוּנָהָא), he called his twelve sons and said to them: “gather yourselves” (קָרָא לִבְנוֹהִי תְּרֵיסַר, וְאָמַר לוֹן: הֵאָסְפוּ). Prepare yourselves to complete the faith

Come and see, twelve tribes, in four banners, in four directions (תָּא חֲזֵי, תְּרֵיסַר שִׁבְטִין, בְּד׳ דִּגְלִין, בְּד׳ סִטְרִין), three facing north, three facing west, three facing south, and three facing east, and the sea upon them (שְׁלשָׁה פּוֹנִים צָפוֹנָה, וּשְׁלשָׁה פּוֹנִים יָמָה, וּשְׁלשָׁה פּוֹנִים נֶגְבָּה, וּשְׁלשָׁה פּוֹנִים מִזְרָחָה, וְהַיָּם עֲלֵיהֶם). And so it is certainly-three tribes for every direction of the four winds of the world (וְהָכִי הוּא וַדַּאי, תְּלַת שִׁבְטִין לְכָל סְטַר לְד׳ רוּחֵי עַלְמָא), and three tribes for the right arm, and three tribes for the left arm, and three tribes for the right thigh, and three tribes for the left thigh, and the body of the Shekhinṭa upon them (וּתְלַת שִׁבְטִין לִדְרוֹעָא דִּימִינָא, וּתְלַת שִׁבְטִין לִדְרוֹעָא דִשְׂמָאלָא, וּתְלַת שִׁבְטִין לְיַרְכָא יְמִינָא, וּתְלַת שִׁבְטִין לְיַרְכָא שְׂמָאלָא, וְגוּפָא דִשְׁכִינְתָּא עֲלַיְיהוּ). This is what is written: “and the sea was upon them” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב: וְהַיָּם עֲלֵיהֶם). What is the reason that there are three tribes to the arm and three tribes to the thigh, and likewise for all Rather, the secret of the matter is that there are three bonds on the right arm, and three on the left, and three on the right thigh, and three on the left thigh (אֶלָּא רָזָא דְמִלָּה, תְּלַת קִשְׁרִין אִינוּן בִּדְרוֹעָא יְמִינָא, וּתְלַת בִּשְׂמָאלָא, וּתְלַת בְּיַרְכָא יְמִינָא, וּתְלַת קִשְׁרִין בְּיַרְכָא שְׂמָאלָא), thus twelve bonds to four directions, and the body above them (אִשְׁתַּכָּחוּ תְּרֵיסַר קִשְׁרִין לְאַרְבַּע סִטְרִין, וְגוּפָא עֲלַיְיהוּ).

There are found twelve with the body, corresponding to that which is above From where do we learn this? As it is written (Bereshit 49:28) “All these are the tribes of Yisrael, twelve” (מְנָא לָן, דִּכְתִיב, כָּל אֵלֶּה שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר). And “this”-because in her is the totality of the number, as it is said, “and the sea upon them from above” (וְזֹאת, בְּגִין דְּבָהּ אִשְׁתְּלִים חוּשְׁבְּנָא, כְּמָה דְאִתְּמָר: וְהַיָּם עֲלֵיהֶם מִלְּמַעְלָה). (Zechariah 4:10) “The seven eyes of Hashem”-these are the seven eyes of the assembly (שִׁבְעָה עֵינֵי יְיָ, אִינוּן שִׁבְעָה עֵינֵי הָעֵדָה), seventy of the Sanhedrin (שִׁבְעִין סַנְהֶדְּרִין). Their number, as it is written (Numbers 2:9) “All that were numbered in the camp of Yehudah: one hundred thousand…” (שַׂעֲרָהָא, כְּמָה דִכְתִיב, כָּל הַפְּקוּדִים לְמַחֲנֵה יְהוּדָה מְאַת אֶלֶף וְגו׳), likewise for all the others (כָּל הַפְּקוּדִים לְמַחֲנֶה רְאוּבֵן, וְכֵן לְכֻלְּהוּ). And if you say, in Egypt when Ya’aqov departed the world, that completeness was found at that time, where is all this now Surely there were seventy souls (וַדַּאי שִׁבְעִין נַפְשִׁין הֲווּ), and all those who were born in the seventeen years have no reckoning (וְכָל אִינוּן דְּאוֹלִידוּ בִּשְׁבַע עֶשְׂרֵה שְׁנִין, דְּלֵית לוֹן חוּשְׁבְּנָא), as it is written (Exodus 1:7) “And the children of Yisrael were fruitful and swarmed and multiplied and became very very strong” (כְּמָה דִכְתִיב: וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל פָּרוּ וַיִּשְׁרְצוּ וַיִּרְבּוּ וַיַּעַצְמוּ בִּמְאֹד מְאֹד). And it is written (Psalms 40:13) “They are more numerous than the hairs of my head” (וּכְתִיב: עָצְמוּ מִשַּׂעֲרוֹת רֹאשִׁי). Fortunate is the portion of Ya’aqov the complete one, who was completed above and below

Rabbi El’azar said, surely it is so, but how is it that in the supernal adornment of the Jubilee all this is found He said to him, Aryeh, when he sets his feet to enter the vineyard, who is it that enters with him

Rabbi El'azar opened and said, (Job 23:13) “But He is one-and who can turn Him? And what His soul desires, that He does” (פָּתַח רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר וְאָמַר, וְהוּא בְּאֶחָד וּמִי יְשִׁיבֶנּוּ וְנַפְשׁוֹ אִוְתָה וַיָּעַשׂ). This supernal arrangement is all one-it does not contain division like the lower one (הַאי תִּקּוּנָא עִלָּאָה, הוּא כֹּלָּא חַד, לָא הֲוֵי בֵּיהּ פִּירוּדָא כְּהַאי תַּתָּאָה), for it is written (Bereshit 2:10) “And from there it parted and became four heads” (דְּהָא כְּתִיב: וּמִשָּׁם יִפָּרֶד וְהָיָה לְאַרְבָּעָה רָאשִׁים). Yet even though there is division in it, when one contemplates the matters, all rises to one But this supernal arrangement of the Jubilee stands on twelve like the lower one And even though it is one, this oneness completes each side, in this side and in that side Those six supernal directions are twelve, for each adds to the other, and is integrated from it דְּכָל חַד אוֹזִיף לְחַבְרֵיהּ, וְאִתְכְּלִיל מִנֵּיהּ), and twelve are found-and the body-and all stands upon twelve (וְאִשְׁתַּכָּחוּ תְּרֵיסַר, וְגוּפָא, וְכֹלָּא קָיְימָא עַל תְּרֵיסַר).

What is the body? This is Ya’aqov, and this has already been said But the head and the body stand as one Further, the twelve: three bonds of the right arm-Chesed, kindnesses Three bonds of the left arm-Gevurah, mights Three bonds in the right thigh-Netzaḥ, victories Three bonds in the left thigh-Hod, glories These are twelve, and the body stands upon them-this is thirteen Furthermore, in these thirteen the Orayta is encompassed and explained, and all is one, from above to below in union, until that place which stands upon separation
