Daf 8b (דַּף ח׳ ע״ב)

And on that day (וְהַהוּא יוֹמָא), one flame of fire will be aroused in the great city of Rome (יִתְּעַר בְּקַרְתָּא דְּרוֹמִי רַבְּתָא), by that voice that is stirred in all the world (חַד שַׁלְהוֹבָא דְּאֶשָּׁא, בְּהַהוּא קַלָּא דְּיִתְּעַר בְּכָל עָלְמָא). And it will ignite many towers (וְיוֹקִיד כַּמָּה מִגְדָּלִין), and many palaces (וְכַמָּה הֵיכָלִין), and many towers will fall (וְכַמָּה מִגְדָּלִין יִפְּלוּן), and many princes and nobles will fall on that day (וְכַמָּה פַּרְדַּשְׁכֵּי וְרַבְרְבֵי יִפְּלוּן בְּהַהוּא יוֹמָא), and all will gather upon her for evil (וְכֻלְּהוּ, יִתְכַּנְּשׁוּן עָלָּה לְבִישׁ). And none among the inhabitants of the world will be able-some say: will think-to be saved (וְכָל בְּנֵי עָלְמָא לָא יַכְלִין (ס״א יַחְשְׁבוּן) לְאִשְׁתְּזָבָא).

From that day, for twelve months (מֵהַהוּא יוֹמָא, עַד תְּרֵיסַר יַרְחִין), all the kings will conspire (יִתְיַעֲטוּן כָּל מַלְכַּיָּא), and they will decree many decrees (וְיִגְזְרוּן כַּמָּה גְּזֵרוֹת), and many decrees of destruction upon Yisrael (וְכַמָּה שְׁמָדוֹת עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל), and they will succeed in it-some say: in them (וְיִצְלְחוּן בֵּיהּ (נ״א בְּהוֹן)), as it was said: Blessed is he who will be stirred there (כְּמָה דְּאִתְּמַר זַכָּאָה אִיהוּ מַאן דְּיִעְרַע תַּמָּן), and blessed is he who will not be stirred there (וְזַכָּאָה אִיהוּ מַאן דְּלָא יִעֲרַע תַּמָּן), and the whole world will be in great confusion (וְכָל עָלְמָא יְהֵא בְּעִרְבוּבְיָא סַגְיָא). At the end of twelve months (לְסוֹף תְּרֵיסַר יַרְחֵי), a scepter will arise from Yisrael (יָקוּם שֵׁבֶט מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל), this is the King Mashiach (דָּא מַלְכָּא מְשִׁיחָא), who will be stirred within the Garden of Eden (דְּיִתְּעַר גּוֹ גִּנְתָּא דְּעֵדֶן). And all those Righteous will crown him there (וְכָל אִינּוּן צַדִּיקַיָּא יַעְטְרוּן לֵיהּ תַּמָּן), and will gird him with weapons of war (וְיַחְגְּרוּן לֵיהּ מָאנֵי זַיְינָא), with the inscribed letters of the garments of the Holy Name (בְּאַתְוָון רְשִׁימָן דְּמָאנֵי דִּשְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא). And a voice will burst forth among the branches of the trees of the Garden (וְקָלָא יִתְפּוֹצֵץ בְּעַנְפֵי אִילָּנִין דְּגִנְתָּא), crying out with might (קָרֵי בְּחַיִל), and saying (וְאָמַר), “Awaken, O supernal holy ones (אִתְעֲרוּ קַדִּישֵׁי עֶלְיוֹנִין), arise before Mashiach (קוּמוּ מִקָּמֵי מְשִׁיחָא), behold the time to unite the Woman with her Husband (הָא עִדָנָא לְאִתְחַבְּרָא אִיתְּתָא בְּבַעְלָהּ), and her Husband seeks to avenge her vengeance from the world (וּבַעְלָהּ בָּעֵי לְנַקְמָא לָהּ נוּקְמִין דְּעָלְמָא), and to raise her up (וּלְאָקָמָא לָהּ), and to shake her from the dust” (וּלְאַנְעָרָה לָהּ מֵעַפְרָא).

Then they will all rise (כְּדֵין יְקוּמוּן כֻּלְּהוּ), and they will gird him as before with the garments of his weaponry (וְיַחְגְּרוּן לֵיהּ כְּמִלְּקַדְּמִין מָאנֵי זַיְינֵיהּ): Avraham at his right (אַבְרָהָם מִימִינֵיהּ), Yitzchak at his left (יִצְחָק מִשְּׂמָאלֵיהּ), Ya‘akov before him (יַעֲקֹב קָמֵיהּ), Moshe the faithful shepherd (Ra‘aya Meheimna) (מֹשֶׁה רַעְיָא מְהֵימְנָא), over all these Righteous (עַל כָּל אִלֵּין צַדִּיקַיָּא), and he walks and dances in the Garden of Eden (אָזִיל וְרָקִיד גּוֹ גִּנְתָּא דְּעֵדֶן). When Mashiach is prepared (כֵּיוָן דְּאִתְקַן מָשִׁיחַ), by the hands of the Righteous in the Garden of Eden (עַל יְדָא דְּצַדִיקַיָּא בְּגִנְתָּא דְּעֵדֶן), he will enter that place called “The Birds nest” as before (יֵעוּל בְּהַהוּא דּוּכְתָּא דְּאִקְרֵי קַ״ן צִפּוֹ״ר כְּמִלְּקַדְּמִין), and there he will behold that form of the destruction of the Beit haMikdash (וְחָמֵי תַּמָּן הַהוּא דִּיּוּקְנָא דְּחָרְבַּן בֵּית מַקְדְּשָׁא), and all the Righteous who were slain there (וְכֻלְּהוּ צַדִּיקַיָּא דְּאִתְקְטָלוּ בֵּיהּ).

Then he takes from there (some say: ten) garments (כְּדֵין נָטִיל מִתַּמָּן (ס״א עֶשֶׂר) לְבוּשִׁין), and they are (some say: and are called) ten garments of vengeance (וְאִינּוּן (נ״א וַאֲקָרוֹן) עֶשֶׂר לְבוּשֵׁי קִנְאָה). And he will be concealed there for forty days (וְיִתְגְּנִיז תַּמָּן אַרְבְּעִין יוֹמִין), not to be revealed at all (דְּלָא אִתְגַּלְיָא כְּלָל). At the end of forty days (לְסוֹף אַרְבְּעִין יוֹמִין), one voice will be aroused (קָלָא חַד יִתְּעַר), and it will be proclaimed from within the upper Throne (וְיִתְקְרֵי מִגּוֹ כּוּרְסְיָּא עִלָּאָה), that “Bird’s nest,” regarding King Mashiach who is concealed within it (הַהוּא קַ״ן צִפּוֹר בְּמַלְכָּא מְשִׁיחָא דְּאִתְגְּנִיז בֵּיהּ). Then they will ascend on high (וּכְדֵין סַלְּקִין לֵיהּ לְעֵילָּא), and Kudsha Berikh Hu will look upon King Mashiach (וְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא חָמֵי לֵיהּ לְמַלְכָּא מְשִׁיחָא), clothed in a garment of vengeance (מִתְלָבַשׁ בִּלְבוּשָׁא נוּקְמָא), and girded with weapons of war (וְחָגִיר מָאנֵי זַיְינֵי), and He will take him (נָטִיל לֵיהּ), and kiss him on his head (וְנָשִׁיק לֵיהּ עַל רֵישֵׁיהּ). Then, three hundred and ninety firmaments will tremble (כְּדֵין, מִזְדַּעְזְעָן ג׳ מְאָה וְתִשְׁעִין רְקִיעִין), and Kudsha Berikh Hu will signal to one firmament (וְאַרְמִיז קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְחַד רְקִיעָא), one that was hidden from the six days of Bereshit (מֵאִינוּן דְּהֲוָה גָּנִיז מִשֵׁשֶׁת יְמֵי בְּרֵאשִׁית), and from one palace within that firmament p5-11(וְאַפִּיק מֵחַד הֵיכְלָא דִּבְהַהוּא רְקִיעָא), a single crown carved and engraved with the sacred Names (חַד כִּתְרָא גְּלִיפָא, מְחַקְּקָא בִּשְׁמָהָן קַדִּישִׁין).

With that crown (בְּהַהוּא עִטְרָא), Kudsha Berikh Hu crowned Himself (אִתְעַטַּר קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא), when Yisrael passed through the sea (כַּד עָבְרוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל יַת יַמָּא), to exact vengeance upon all the chariots of Pharaoh and his horsemen (לְמֵיטַל נוּקְמִין מִכָּל רְתִיכֵי פַרְעֹה וּפָרָשׁוֹי), and He will crown King Mashiach with it (וְאַעְטַר לֵיהּ לְמַלְכָּא מְשִׁיחָא). When he is crowned and prepared with all these adornments (כֵּיוָן דְּאִתְעַטָּר וְאִתְתָּקַּן בְּכָל הָנֵי תִּקּוּנִין), Kudsha Berikh Hu takes him and kisses him as before (נָטִיל לֵיהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא וְנָשִׁיק לֵיהּ כְּמִלְּקַדְּמִין). Who can see-those sacred chariots and supernal hosts that circle him (מַאן חָמֵי, רְתִיכִין קַדִּישִׁין, וּמַשִׁרְיָין עִלָּאִין, דְּסָחֲרִין לֵיהּ), and they give him many gifts and treasures (וְיָהֲבִין לֵיהּ מַתְּנָן וּנְבִזְבְּזָן סַגִּיאִין), and he is crowned from them all (וְיִתְעַטָּר מִכֻּלְּהוּ). He enters there into one palace (עָאל תַּמָּן בְּחַד הֵיכְלָא), and sees all those supernal angels (וְחָמֵי כָּל אִינּוּן מַלְאֲכֵי עִלָּאֵי), who are called the mourners of Zion (דְּאִקְרוּן אֲבֵלֵי צִיּוֹן), those who wept over the destruction of the Beit haMikdash (אִינּוּן דְּבָכוּ עַל חָרְבַּן בֵּי מַקְדְּשָׁא), and weep there continually (וּבָכָאן תָּדִיר), and they give him one purple cloak dyed red (וְאִינּוּן יַהֲבִין לֵיהּ חַד פּוּרְפִירָא סוּמָקָא), to exact vengeance (לְמֶעְבַּד נוּקְמִין). Then Kudsha Berikh Hu conceals him in that “Birds nest” (כְּדֵין, קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא גָּנִיז לֵיהּ בְּהַהוּא קַן צִפּוֹר), and he is hidden there for thirty days (וְאִתְכַּסֵּי תַּמָּן תְּלָתִין יוֹמִין).

After thirty days (לְבָתַר תְּלָתִין יוֹמִין), in that “Birds nest” he will appear crowned with all those adornments from above and below (בְּהַהוּא קַ״ן צִפּוֹר, יֵחוּת מְעֻטָר בְּכָל אִינּוּן תִּקּוּנִין מֵעֵילָּא וּמִתַּתָּא), and many holy hosts will surround him (כַּמָּה מַשִׁרְיָין קַדִּישִׁין סַחֲרָנֵיהּ), and all the world will see (וְיֵחְמוּן כָּל עָלְמָא), one illumination (חַד נְהִירוּ), suspended from heaven to earth (תָּלֵי מֵרְקִיעָא לְאַרְעָא), and it will remain for seven days (וְיֵקוּם שִׁבְעָה יוֹמִין), and all the inhabitants of the world will be amazed and confounded (וְכָל בְּנֵי עָלְמָא יִתְמְהוּן וְיִתְבָּהֲלוּן), and they will not understand anything (וְלָא יִנְדְּעוּן כְּלַל), except those wise ones who know these secret’in (בַּר אִינּוּן חַכִּימִין, דְּיַדְעִין בְּרָזִין אִלֵּין), blessed is their portion (זַכָּאָה חוּלָקֵיהוֹן). And for all those seven days (וְכָל אִינּוּן שִׁבְעָה יוֹמִין), he will prepare-some say: be crowned-on the earth (יִתְעַתֵּד (ס״א יִתְעַטֵּר) בְּאַרְעָא), in that “Birds nest” (בְּהַהוּא קַ״ן צִפּוֹר). In which place? On the road-this is the tomb of Rachel (בְּאָן אֲתָר. בַּדֶּרֶךְ, דָּא קְבוּרַת רָחֵל), which stands at the crossroad of paths (דְּאִיהִי קַיְּימָא בְּפָרָשַׁת אוֹרְחִין). And he will announce to her (וִיבַשֵּׂר לָהּ), and comfort her (וַיִּנָחֵם לָהּ), and then she will accept consolation (וּכְדֵין תְּקַבֵּל תַּנְחוּמִין), and she will rise and kiss him (וְתָקוּם וְתְנַשִׁיק לֵיהּ). After that, that illumination will rise from that place (לְבָתַר יֵקוּם הַהוּא נְהִירוּ מֵהַהוּא אֲתָר), and rest in Yericho, the city of trees (וְשָׁרֵי בִּיְרִיחוֹ קַרְתָּא דְּאִילָנֵי). “On every tree”-this is Yericho (בְּכָל עֵץ דָּא יְרִיחוֹ); “or on the ground”-this is Yerushalayim (אוֹ עַל הָאָרֶץ, דָּא יְרוּשְׁלֵם). And that illumination of the “Birds nest” will be hidden there for twelve months (וִיהֵא גָּנִיז בְּהַהוּא נְהִירוּ דְּקַ״ן צִפּוֹר תְּרֵיסַר יַרְחֵי).
