Rabbi El'azar said, it is only necessary to mention the Holy Name after a word (ר׳ אֶלְעָזָר אָמַר, לָא אִצְטְרִיךְ לְמִדְכַּר שְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא אֶלָּא בָּתַר מִלָּה), that is, after a matter (כלומר: עַל מִלָּה). For the Holy Name is not mentioned in the Orayta except after two words (דְּהָא שְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא, לָא אִדְכַּר בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, אֶלָּא בָּתַר תְּרֵין מִלִּין), as it is written, “In the beginning Elohim created” (דִּכְתִּיב, בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים) (Bereshit 1).
Rabbi Shimon said, the Holy Name is not mentioned except upon a complete world (רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אָמַר, לָא אִדְכַּר שְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא, אֶלָּא עַל עוֹלָם שָׁלֵם), as it is written, “On the day that Hashem Elohim made earth and heaven” (דִּכְתִּיב, בְּיוֹם עֲשׂוֹת יְיָ אֱלֹהִים אֶרֶץ וְשָׁמָיִם) (Bereshit 2). From here, one must not mention the Holy Name in vain (מִכָּאן, דְּלָא לְאַדְכְּרָא שְׁמֵיהּ קַדִּישָׁא בְּרֵיקַנְיָּא), as it is written, “You shall not bear the Name of Hashem your Elohim in vain” (וּכְתִיב, לֹא תִשָּׂא אֶת שֵׁם יְיָ אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַשָּׁוְא) (Exodus 20). Some say: it is written, “You shall not bear the Name of Hashem your Elohim in vain”-that one must not mention the Holy Name in vain, except in blessing or prayer (ס״א: כְּתִיב, לֹא תִשָּׂא אֶת שֵׁם יְיָ אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַשָּׁוְא דְּלָא לְאַדְכְּרָא שְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא בְּרֵיקַנְיָּא, אֶלָּא בִּבְרָכְתָּא אוֹ בִּצְלוֹתָא), and whoever mentions the Holy Name in vain, not in blessing or prayer, woe to him-his soul departs from him, and punishment is prepared for him, and vengeance will be exacted from him (וּמַאן דְּאַדְכַּר שְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא בְּרֵיקַנְיָּא דְּלָא בִּבְרָכְתָּא אוֹ בִּצְלוֹתָא, כֵּיהּ נִשְׁמָתֵיהּ נָפְקָא מִינֵיהּ, זְמִינִין לְאִתְפְּרְעָא מִינֵיהּ, וּלְנִקְמָא מִינֵיהּ נוֹקְמִין), as it is written, “For Hashem will not cleanse one who bears His Name in vain” (דִּכְתִּיב, כִּי לֹא יְנַקֶּה יְיָ אֵת אֲשֶׁר יִשָּׂא אֶת שְׁמוֹ לַשָּׁוְא) (Exodus 20).
And we have learned, Rabbi Yose said, what is blessing?-it is the Holy Name (וְתָנֵינָן, אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסֵי, מַהוּ בְּרָכָה שְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא), because from it blessing is found for the whole world (בְּגִין דְּמִינֵיהּ מִשְׁתְּכַח בִּרְכְתָא לְכָל עָלְמָא). And blessing is not found on an empty place, nor does it rest upon it (וּבִרְכְתָא לָא אִשְׁתְּכַח עַל אֲתָר רֵיקָנַיָּא, וְלָא שַׁרְיָיא עֲלוֹי), this is what is written, “You shall not bear the Name of Hashem your Elohim in vain” (הֲדָא הוּא דִּכְתִּיב, לֹא תִשָּׂא אֶת שֵׁם יְיָ אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַשָּׁוְא) (Exodus 20). “Remember the day of Shabbat to sanctify it” (זָכוֹר אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת לְקַדְּשׁוֹ) (Exodus 20).
Rabbi Yitzchak said, it is written, “And Elohim blessed the seventh day” (רַבִּי יִצְחָק אָמַר, כְּתִיב, וַיְבָרֶךְ אֱלֹהִים אֶת יוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי) (Bereshit 2), and it is written regarding the manna, “For six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day-it will not be there” (וּכְתִיב בַּמָּן, שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים תִּלְקְטֻהוּ, וּבְיוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי שַׁבָּת לֹא יִהְיֶה בּוֹ) (Exodus 16). Since no sustenance is found on that day, what blessing is found in it?
Rather, this is what was taught: all blessings above and below depend on the seventh day And it was taught, why is no manna found on the seventh day? Because from that day all six supernal days are blessed (וְתָאנָא, אֲמַאי לָא אִשְׁתְּכַח מָנָּא בְּיוֹמָא שְׁבִיעָאָה מִשּׁוּם דְּהַהוּא יוֹמָא, מִתְבָּרְכָאן מִינֵּיהּ כָּל שִׁיתָא יוֹמִין עִלָּאִין), and each gives its sustenance below, each on its day, from the blessing that is given on the seventh day (וְכָל חַד וְחַד יָהִיב מְזוֹנֵיהּ לְתַתָּא, כָּל חַד בְּיוֹמוֹי, מֵהַהִיא בְּרָכָה דְּמִתְבָּרְכָאן בְּיוֹמָא שְׁבִיעָאָה).
And because of this, one who is in the level of faith (וּבְגִינֵי כַּךְ, מַאן דְּאִיהוּ בְּדַרְגָּא דִּמְהֵימָנוּתָא), must set his table and prepare the meal on the night of Shabbat (בָּעֵי לְסַדְּרָא פָּתוֹרָא, וּלְאַתְקְנָא סְעוּדָתָא בְּלֵילְיָא דְּשַׁבְּתָא), so that his table will be blessed with all six days (בְּגִין דְּיִתְבָּרֵךְ פָּתוֹרֵיהּ, כָּל אִינּוּן שִׁיתָא יוֹמִין), for at that time, blessing is summoned to bless all six days of the week (דְּהָא בְּהַהוּא זִמְנָא, אִזְדָּמַן בְּרָכָה, לְאִתְבָּרְכָא כָּל שִׁיתָא יוֹמִין דְּשַׁבְּתָא), and blessing is not found on an empty table (וּבִרְכָתָא לָא אִשְׁתְּכַח בְּפָתוֹרָא רֵיקָנַיָּא). And for this reason, one must set his table on the night of Shabbat with bread and food
Rabbi Yitzchak said, even on the day of Shabbat as well Rabbi Yehudah said, a person must delight in this day, and eat three meals on Shabbat (רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אָמַר בָּעֵי לְאִתְעַנְגָּא בְּהַאי יוֹמָא, וּלְמֵיכַל תְּלַת סְעוּדָתֵי בְּשַׁבְּתָא), so that satiety and delight will be found in this day in the world (בְּגִין דְּיִשְׁתְּכַח שָׂבְעָא וְעִנּוּגָא בְּהַאי יוֹמָא בְּעָלְמָא).
Rabbi Abba said, to summon blessing into those supernal days which are blessed from this day And this day fills the head of Ze’ir Anpin from the dew that descends from Atika Kadisha, the concealed one of all (וְהַאי יוֹמָא, מַלְיָא רֵישֵׁיהּ דִּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין, מִטַּלָּא דְּנָחִית מֵעַתִּיקָא קַדִּישָׁא סְתִימָא דְּכֹלָּא), and it is cast into the orchard of the Holy Apples three times, from when Shabbat enters, and all are blessed together (וְאָטִיל לְחַקְלָא דְּתַפּוּחִין קַדִּישִׁין, תְּלַת זִמְנֵי, מִכַּד עָיִיל שַׁבְּתָא, דְּיִתְבָּרְכוּן כֻּלְּהוּ כַּחֲדָא).
And because of this, a person must delight in these three times (וְעַל דָּא בָּעֵי בַּר נָשׁ, לְאִתְעַנְגָּא תְּלַת זִמְנִין אִלֵּין), for in this is dependent the supernal faith, in Atika Kadisha, and in Ze’ir Anpin, and in the orchard of the Holy Apples (דְּהָא בְּהָא תַּלְיָא מְהֵימָנוּתָא דִּלְעֵילָּא, בְּעַתִּיקָא קַדִּישָׁא, וּבִזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין, וּבְחַקְלָא דְּתַפּוּחִין). And a person must delight in them and rejoice in them And one who diminishes from any of these meals causes a blemish above, and the punishment for that person is great And because of this, a person must set his table three times from the moment Shabbat enters (בְּגִינֵי כַּךְ, בָּעֵי לְסַדְּרָא פָּתוֹרֵיהּ, תְּלַת זִמְנֵי, מִכַּד עָיִיִל שַׁבְּתָא), and his table must not be found empty (וְלָא יִשְׁתְּכַח פָּתוֹרֵיהּ רֵיקָנַיָּא), so that blessing may rest upon it for all the other days of the week (וְתִשְׁרֵי בִּרְכְתָא עֲלֵיהּ, כָּל שְׁאַר יוֹמֵי דְּשַׁבְּתָא). And in this matter, behold, the supernal faith depends
Rabbi Shimon said, one who completes the three meals on Shabbat (רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אָמַר, הַאי מַאן דְּאַשְׁלִים תְּלַת סְעוּדָתֵי בְּשַׁבָּתָא), a voice emerges and proclaims about him, “Then you shall delight in Hashem” (קָלָא נָפִיק וּמַכְרְזָא עָלֵיהּ, אָז תִּתְעַנַּג עַל יְיָ') (Isaiah 58) this is the first meal (דָּא סְעוּדָתָא חֲדָא), corresponding to Atika Kadisha, the Ancient of Days, who is holier than all the holy ones (לָקֳבֵל עַתִּיקָא קַדִּישָׁא דְּכָל קַדִּישִׁין). “And I will cause you to ride on the heights of the earth”-this is the second meal (וְהִרְכַּבְתִּיךָ עַל בָּמֳתֵי אָרֶץ, דָּא סְעוּדָתָא תִּנְיָינָא), corresponding to the orchard of the Holy Apples (לָקֳבֵל חַקְלָא דְּתַפּוּחִין קַדִּישִׁין). “And I will feed you the heritage of Ya'akov your father”-this is the completion that is fulfilled in Ze’ir Anpin (Leviticus 26). And corresponding to them, one must complete his meals (וּלֳקָבְלַיְיהוּ בָּעֵי לְאַשְׁלְמָא סְעוּדָתֵיהּ), and he must delight in all the meals and rejoice in each one of them (וּבָעֵי לְאִתְעַנְּגָא בְּכֻלְּהוּ סְעוּדָתֵי, וּלְמֵחדֵי בְּכָל חַד וְחַד מִנַּיְיהוּ), for this is complete faith (מִשּׁוּם דְּאִיהוּ מְהֵימָנוּתָא שְׁלֵימָתָא).
And for this reason, Shabbat is more honored than all other times and festivals (וּבְגִין כַּךְ, שַׁבְּתָא אִתְיָקָּר, מִכָּל שְׁאַר זִמְנִין וְחַגִּין), because everything is found within it (מִשּׁוּם דְּכֹלָּא בֵּיהּ אִשְׁתְּכַח), and nothing like it is found in all other times and festivals (וְלָא אִשְׁתְּכַח הָכִי בְּכֻלְּהוּ זִמְנֵי וְחַגֵּי).
Rabbi Ḥiyya said, and because everything is found in it, it is mentioned three times As it is written: “And Elohim completed on the seventh day” (דִּכְתִּיב, וַיְכַל אֱלֹהִים בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי), “And He rested on the seventh day” (וַיִּשְׁבֹּת בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי), “And Elohim blessed the seventh day” (וַיְבָרֶךְ אֱלֹהִים אֶת יוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי) (Bereshit 2).
