Daf 160a (דַּף ק״ס ע״א)
Alef, which remained, ascended to its place (א' דְּאִשְׁתְּאַר, אִסְתַּלָּק בְּדוּכְתֵּיהּ), and rose upward (וְסָלִיק לְעֵילָּא), and was crowned with Y”H (וְאִתְעַטַּר בֵּיהּ יָ״ה). With these it was strengthened (בְּאִלֵּין אִתְתַּקַּף), and it joined and brought forth He–Vav (וְאַעְדֵּי וְאוֹלִיד ה״ו), and it stood in its place (וְקָאִים בְּדוּכְתֵּיהּ). Then it was crowned (כְּדֵין אִתְעַטַּר), and radiated (וְאַנְהִיר), and extended radiance (וּפָשִׁיט נְהִירוּ), and brought forth radiance (וְאוֹלִיד נְהִירוּ), and emitted the letter Tet (וְאַפִּיק אָת ט'), through the striking by which it struck and illuminated the Secret of the supernal world (בַּטִישׁוּ דְּקָא בָּטַשׁ וְנָהִיר רָזָא דְּעָלְמָא עִלָּאָה), with radiance (בִּנְהִירוּ).
Then Alef ascended (כְּדֵין אִסְתַּלָּק א'), and took from the air Mem–Shin (וְנָטִיל מִגּוֹ אֲוִירָא מ״ש), and they joined with it (וְאִתְחַבָּרוּ בַּהֲדֵיהּ), and they became Alef–Mem–Shin as at first (וַהֲווּ א–מ–ש כְּמִלְּקַדְּמִין). Alef settled in the direction of the south (וְאִתְיָישַׁב א' בְּסִטְרָא דְּדָרוֹם), Shin in the direction of the east (ש' בְּסִטְרָא דְּמִזְרָח), Mem in the direction of the north (מ' בְּסִטְרָא דְּצָפוֹן). Gimel, which had been in the east, ascended (סַלְּקָא ג' דְּהֲוָה בְּסִטְרָא דְּמִזְרָח), and joined and brought forth Tzadi–Tav (וְאַעְדֵּי וְאוֹלִיד צ״ת). The letter Bet, which was in the west, came (אָתָא ב' דְּהֲוָה בִּסְטַר מַעֲרָב), and rose and joined between Tzadi–Tav (וְסָלִיק וְאִתְחַבָּר בֵּין צ״ת). Alef and Vav ascended (סְלִיקוּ א' ו'), this one from the west (דָּא מִסְּטַר מַעֲרָב) - some say: south (נ״א דָּרוֹם) - and that one from the east (וְדָּא מִסְּטַר מִזְרָח), and both joined with Bet between Tzadi–Tav (וְאִתְחַבָּרוּ תַּרְוַיְיהוּ בַּהֲדֵי ב' בֵּין צ״ת), and the Name Tzevaot radiated (וְאַנְהִיר שְׁמָא צְבָאוֹת). When this Name shone within the Mishkan (כַּד אִתְנְהִיר שְׁמָא דָּא גּוֹ מַשְׁכְּנָא), the letters joined and brought forth Zayin, Bet - some say: Gimel - Nun (אַעְדּוּ אַתְּוָון וְאוֹלִידוּ ז' ב' נ״א ג'). Alef–Mem–Shin rose as at first (סְלִיקוּ א–מ–ש כְּמִלְּקַדְּמִין), and they joined and brought forth Samekh, Ayin, Peh (וְאַעֲדוּ וְאוֹלִידוּ ס' ע' פ').
Qof alone remained (אִשְׁתְּאַר ק' יְחִידָאִי), and it ascended and descended (וְסַלְּקָא וְנַחְתָּא), and stood within the Nukvah of the great Tehom (קַיְּימָא גּוֹ נוּקְבָא דִּתְהוֹמָא רַבָּא). Kudsha Berikh Hu saw it (חָמָא לֵיהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא), that it was agitated (דְּקָא מִתְעַרְבְּבָא), without body and without form (בְּלֹא גּוּפָא וְלָא צִיּוּרָא), and it did not enter into the Mishkan (וְלָא עָיִיל לְמַשְׁכְּנָא). He made a chuppah for it, for the Mishkan (עָבֵד לֵיהּ חוּפָּאָה לְמַשְׁכְּנָא). And what is it? (וּמַאי נִיהוּ): “Goat hair curtains for a tent over the Mishkan” (יְרִיעוֹת עִזִּים לְאֹהֶל עַל הַמִּשְׁכָּן), as you say (כְּמָה דְּאַתְּ אָמֵר): “And you shall make goat hair curtains for a tent over the Mishkan” (וְעָשִׂיתָ יְרִיעֹת עִזִּים לְאֹהֶל עַל הַמִּשְׁכָּן) (Exodus 26). For a tent, and not a tent (לְאֹהֶל וְלָא אֹהֶל). A Qof and not Adam (קוֹ״ף וְלָא אָדָם).
Then the letters rolled as before (תּוּ אִתְגַּלְגָּלוּ אַתְּוָון כְּמִלְּקַדְּמִין), in the labor of the Mishkan (גוֹ עוֹבָדָא דְּמַשְׁכְּנָא). Alef–Mem–Shin (א–מ–ש): Shin rolled and settled in the east (ש' אִתְגַּלְגְּלָא וְאִתְיָישְׁבָא בִּסְטַר מִזְרָח), and Gimel remained, hanging in the air (וְאִשְׁתְּאַר ג' תַּלְיָיא בַּאֲוִירָא). Mem rolled and settled in the north (מ' אִתְגַּלְגְּלָא וְאִתְיָישְׁבָא בִּסְטַר צָפוֹן), and Dalet emerged and joined within Shin in that direction (וְנָפַק ד' וְאִתְחַבָּר גּוֹ ש' בְּהַהוּא סִטְרָא). Alef rolled and settled and ascended to Yod (א' אִתְגַּלְגַּל וְאִתְיָישָׁב וְסָלִיק לְגַבֵּי י'), and ascended and was strengthened with it (וְסַלְּקָא וְאִתְתַּקְפָא בַּהֲדֵיהּ), and took it (וְנָטִיל לֵיהּ), and joined with it in one union (וְאִתְחַבָּר גּוֹ בְּחִבּוּרָא חֲדָא): Shaddai (שַׁדָּ״י). When this Name was established in the Mishkan (כַּד שְׁמָא דָּא אִתְתַּקַּן גּוֹ מַשְׁכְּנָא), then it was sustained, and it endures from within the lower Mishkan (כְּדֵין קִיּוּמָא וְקַיְּמָא אִיהוּ מִגּוֹ מַשְׁכְּנָא דִּלְתַּתָּא).
Then the letters rolled as at first (תּוּ אַתְּוָון אִתְגַּלְגַּלוּ כְּמִלְּקַדְּמִין), to establish the Mishkan (לְאִתְיַישְּׁבָא מַשְׁכְּנָא). The letters ascended (סְלִיקוּ אַתְּוָון), Alef first (א' בְּרֵישָׁא), Tav after (ת' לְבָתַר), Alef–Tav (א״ת). Bet first (ב' בְּרִישָׁא), Shin after (ש' לְבָתַר). The letters were reversed (אִתְחַלָּפוּ אַתְּוָון), Alef–Bet–Gimel, Yod–Tav–Tzadi (אַב״ג יִת״ץ), they rolled in the carvings of holiness (אִתְגַּלְגַּלוּ בְּגִלּוּפֵי קֻדְשָׁא): Alef brought forth Qof (א' אַפִּיק ק'), to guard the Mishkan (לְנַטְרָא מַשְׁכְּנָא). Qof brought forth Reish (ק' אַפִּיק ר'). Reish brought forth Ayin (ר' אַפִּיק ע') - Qof–Reish–Ayin [KARA] (קר״ע).
This is the secret (רָזָא דָּא): “And the skins of the goats she put upon his hands and upon the smooth of his neck” (וְאֶת עוֹרוֹת גְּדָיֵי הָעִזִּים הִלְבִּישָׁה עַל יָדָיו וְעַל חֶלְקַת צַוָּארָיו) (Bereshit 27). In this manner: “And you shall make goat-hair curtains for a tent over the Mishkan” (כְּגַוְונָא דָּא, וְעָשִׂיתָ יְרִיעֹת עִזִּים לְאֹהֶל עַל הַמִּשְׁכָּן). For this covering is required to be revealed on the outside (דְּהָא חוּלָקָא דָּא, אִצְטְרִיךְ לְאַחֲזָאָה לְבַר), to guard that which is inside (לְנַטְרָא הַהִיא דִּלְגָּאו), and for this secret, she clothed Ya'akov externally (וְעַל רָזָא דָּא אַלְבִּישַׁת לֵיהּ לְיַעֲקֹב לְבַר).
Shin–Tet–Nun, Qof–Reish–Ayin [SATAN KARA] (שט״ן קר״ע), those letters are inscribed on the outside (אַתְּוָון אִינּוּן רְשִׁימָן לְבַר), for guarding the Mishkan (בְּגִין נְטוּרָא דְּמַשְׁכְּנָא), which is the secret of the Holy Covenant (דְּאִיהוּ רָזָא דִּבְרִית קַדִּישָׁא), and the foreskin was punished afterwards in this chuppah (וְאִתְפָּרְעָא עָרְלָה לְבָתַר בְּחוּפָּאָה דָּא). Then the letters rolled again (תּוּ אִתְגַּלְגְּלוּ אַתְּוָון), and brought forth ATBSH (וְאַפִּיק א״ת ב״ש), "Detestable thing" [shiqquzit] (שִׁקּוּצִי״ת): “In the beginning, Elohim created the heavens and the earth, and the earth was tohu…” etc. (בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ, וְהָאָרֶץ הָיְתָה תֹהוּ וְגוֹ'). In this rolling: “And the earth was tohu va-vohu” (בְּגִלְגּוּלָא דָּא וְהָאָרֶץ הָיְתָה תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ), in the letters “Tear Satan” (Kara Satan) (בְּאַתְּוָון קר״ע שט״ן). “And darkness was upon the face of the deep” (וְחֹשֶׁךְ עַל פְּנֵי תְהוֹם): Gimel brought forth Reish (ג' אַפִּיק ר'), Dalet [brought forth] Qof (ד' ק'), until here the letters (עַד הָכָא אַתְּוָון), they rolled (אִתְגַּלְגְּלוּ), and in this striking, one with the other, for rectification within the Mishkan (וּבְטִישׁוּ דָּא בְּדָא לְתִקּוּנָא גּוֹ מַשְׁכְּנָא). p1-37
These Alef–Mem–Shin brought forth offspring (אִינּוּן א–מ–ש אַפִּיקוּ תּוֹלָדִין), some say: Tav (נ״א ת'): Hei, Tzadi, Vav, Final Peh (ה' צ' ו' ף') - letters suspended in the air (אַתְּוָון דְּתַלְיָין גּוֹ אֲוִירָא), and striking among those others, they brought forth the form of the Mishkan (וּבְטִישׁוּ בְּאִינּוּן אַחֲרָנִין וְאַפִּיקוּ צִיּוּרָא דְּמַשְׁכְּנָא): Zayin, Ayin (ז' ע'). Until here it stands: “And darkness upon the face of the deep” - Chet (עַד הָכָא קַיְּימָא וְחֹשֶׁךְ עַל פְּנֵי תְהוֹם ח') - all of them on his side (כֻּלְּהוּ בְּסִטְרוֹי). Came Samekh and joined with it (אָתָא ס' וְאִתְחַבָּר בַּהֲדֵיהּ), then: “Let there be light, and there was light” (כְּדֵין יְהִי אוֹר וַיְהִי אוֹר).
The letters rolled as before (אִתְגַּלְגְּלוּ אַתְּוָון כְּמִלְּקַדְּמִין): ABGYTTZ (אַב״ג יִת״ץ), they joined and brought forth and generated a form within the secrets of the Mishkan (אַעְדּוּ וְאוֹלִידוּ וְאַפִּיקוּ צִיּוּרָא גּוֹ רָזִין דְּמַשְׁכְּנָא), some say: as a whole (ס״א בִּכְלָלָא). They rolled as one in the Secret: ALBM (אִתְגַּלְגְּלוּ חֲדָא בְּרָזָא א' ל' ב' ם'). For the letter Alef joined (דְּהָא אָת א' אַעְדֵּי), and generated in the secret of awe and strength the letter Lamed (וְאוֹלִיד בְּרָזָא דְּחֵילָּא וּתְּקִיפָּא אָת ל'). It strengthened in its might (אִתְגַּבַּר בְּתוּקְפֵּיהּ), and ascended in its glory (וְאִסְתַּלָּק בִּיקָרֵיהּ), and brought forth the letter Bet (וְאוֹלִיד אָת ב'), then they joined and brought forth other letters (כְּדֵין אַעְדִּיאוּ וְאוֹלִידוּ אַתְּוָון), and these others were joined (וְאִתְחַבָּרוּ אַחֲרָנִין אִלֵּין). Alef joined in its carving with the letter Bet (א' אִתְחַבָּר בְּגִלּוּפֵיהּ בְּאָת ב'), then Tet–Reish joined (כְּדֵין ט״ר בְּחִבּוּרָא), Tet–Tav, to raise the letters to their places (ט״ת לְמֶהוֵי אַתְּוָון סַלְּקִין בְּאַתְרַיְיהוּ), within the combination of the Secret of the Mishkan (גוֹ צֵרוּפָא דְּרָזָא דְּמַשְׁכְּנָא): “The laver and its base” (שְׁמוֹת ל״ה: אֶת הַכִּיּוֹר וְאֶת כַּנּוֹ) (Exodus 35).
Notes
Sulam on Zohar, Terumah: “Again the letters revolved, etc.” (תּוּ אִתְגַּלְגְּלוּ אַתְוָון וְכוּ׳): again the letters revolved and produced the permutations from Atbash [Aleph–Tav, Bet–Shin] through Shakutzit (שׁוּב נִתְגַּלְגְּלוּ הָאוֹתִיּוֹת, וְהוֹצִיאוּ הַצֵּירוּף א״ת ב״ש עַד שַׁקּוּצִי״ת). That is, Atbash produced all seven names of the Name of Forty-Two [Shem Mem-Bet] of Ana BeKoach [Please, by Your strength], through Shakutzit (כְּלוֹמַר, שֶׁא״ת ב״ש הוֹצִיא כָּל ז׳ הַשֵּׁמוֹת שֶׁל הַשֵּׁם מ״ב דְּאָנָּא בְּכֹחַ, עַד שַׁקּוּצִי״ת): namely, Abgitatz, Kera Satan, Neged Yakhash, Beteratzag, Chakbetana, Yagel Pazak, and Shakutzit (שֶׁהֵם אַבְגִית״ץ, קְרַ״ע שָׂטָ״ן, נֶגֶדִיכַ״שׁ, בְּטַרְצַת״ג, חַקְבַּטְנַ״ע, יְגַלְפַּזַ״ק, שַׁקּוּצִי״ת). And they are the mystery of the forty-two letters of: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, and the earth was chaos,” etc., through the second Heh of “and void” (וְהֵם סוֹד מ״ב אוֹתִיּוֹת שֶׁל, בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ וְהָאָרֶץ הָיְתָה תֹהוּ וְגוֹ׳ עַד ה ב׳ שֶׁל ו ב הו). For these forty-two letters are the mystery of the Name of Forty-Two (שֶׁמ״ב אוֹתִיּוֹת אֵלּוּ הֵן סוֹד הַשֵּׁם מ״ב), as brought above in the Introduction to the Book of the Zohar (כַּמּוּבָא לְעֵיל בְּהַקְסָה״ז דַּף ד׳ דִּבּוּר הַמַּתְחִיל וְזֶה). In this revolution of the letters is the mystery of “and the earth was chaos and void,” through the letters Kera Satan [KR‘ STN] (בְּגִלְגּוּל זֶה שֶׁל הָאוֹתִיּוֹת הוּא סוֹד וְהָאָרֶץ הָיְתָה תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ עַל יְדֵי הָאוֹתִיּוֹת קְרַ״ע שָׂטָ״ן), namely, by the power of the fierce judgments within it (דְּהַיְנוּ בְּכֹחַ הַדִּינִים הָעַזִּים שֶׁבּוֹ). Thus there came to be: “And darkness was upon the face of the deep” (נַעֲשֶׂה, וְחֹשֶׁךְ עַל פְּנֵי תְהוֹם). The Gimel brought forth Resh, and the Dalet Qof (ה ג׳ הוֹצִיאָה ר׳ וְה ד׳ ק׳), and the permutations Gimel-Resh [GR] and Dalet-Qof [DQ] were formed (וְנַעֲשׂוּ הַצֵּירוּפִים ג״ר ד״ק). Up to this point, after the four permutations—Atbash, Gimel-Resh, and Dalet-Qof—emerged (עַד כָּאן, אַחַר שֶׁיָּצְאוּ ד׳ הַצֵּירוּפִים א״ת ב״ש ג״ר ד״ק), the letters revolved and struck one another in order to become a rectification within the Mishkan [Tabernacle] (הָאוֹתִיּוֹת נִתְגַּלְגְּלוּ וְהִכּוּ זוֹ בָּזוֹ לִהְיוֹת לְתִקּוּן תּוֹךְ הַמִּשְׁכָּן). This is because the alphabetic permutations of Atbash, which are eleven permutations—Atbash, Gimel-Resh, Dalet-Qof, Heh-Tzadi, Vav-Peh, Zayin-Ayin, Ḥet-Samekh, Tet-Nun, Yod-Mem, and Kaf-Lamed—are divided into three lines: right, left, and middle And these first four—Atbash, Gimel-Resh, and Dalet-Qof—are their right line (וְאֵלּוּ ד׳ הָרִאשׁוֹנִים, א״ת ב״ש ג״ר ד״ק, הֵן קַו יָמִין שֶׁבָּהֶם). Therefore, they are the aspect of rectification in the Mishkan (וְעַל כֵּן הֵם בְּחִינַת תִּקּוּן בַּמִּשְׁכָּן).
