What is written afterward: “For therefore I have seen your face as one sees the face of Elohim, and you were pleased with me” (מַה כְּתִיב לְבָתַר: כִּי עַל כֵּן רָאִיתִי פָנֶיךָ כִּרְאוֹת פְּנֵי אֱלֹהִים וַתִּרְצֵנִי) (Bereshit 33). That he saw in those faces of Esav the likeness that had appeared to him of Sama’el himself (דְּחָמָא בְּאִינּוּן אַנְפִּין דְּעֵשָׂו כְּדִּיוּקְנָא דְּאִתְחָזֵי לֵיהּ סָמָאֵ״ל מַמָּשׁ), for in every place where a person is attached, thus does it appear to him in the face (דְּהָא בְּכָל אֲתָר דְּבַּר נָשׁ אִתְקָשַּׁר, הָכִי אִתְחָזֵי בְּאַנְפּוֹי). And you, holy ones on high, the Shekhinta is with you (וְאַתּוּן קַדִּישֵׁי עֶלְיוֹנִין, שְׁכִינְתָּא בַּהֲדַיְיכוּ), and your faces are like her faces (וְאַנְפִּין דִּלְכוֹן כְּאִינּוּן אַנְפִּין דִּילָהּ); blessed are you (זַכָּאִין אַתוּן). He said: if we were going on one path, I would go with you I would sit with you (הֲוֵינָא יַתְבֵי עִמְּכוֹן); now that you are on your path and I am on my path (הַשְּׁתָּא דְּאַתּוּן לְאָרְחַיְיכוּ, וַאֲנָא לְאָרְחִי), I will separate from you with matters of Orayta
He opened and said: “A Song of Ascents, of Shlomo: unless Hashem builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless Hashem guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain” (פָּתַח וְאָמַר: שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת לִשְׁלֹמֹה אִם יְיָ' לֹא יִבְנֶה בַיִת שָׁוְא עָמְלוּ בוֹנָיו בּוֹ אִם יְיָ' לֹא יִשְׁמָר עִיר שָׁוְא שָׁקַד שׁוֹמֵר) (Psalms 127). And did Shlomo say this song when he built the Beit haMikdash? Not so, for King David said it for King Shlomo his son (לָאו הָכִי, דְּהָא דָּוִד מַלְכָּא אֲמַר לֵיהּ בְּגִין שְׁלֹמֹה מַלְכָּא בְּרֵיהּ), when Natan came to him and said to him about Shlomo, that he would build the Beit haMikdash (כַּד אָתָא נָתָן לְגַבֵּיהּ, וְאֲמַר לֵיהּ עַל שְׁלֹמֹה דְּאִיהוּ יִבְנִי בֵּי מַקְדְּשָׁא). And afterward, King David saw for Shlomo his son the image of the Beit haMikdash When David saw the image of the Beit haMikdash and all of its arrangements (כֵּיוָן דְּחָמָא דָּוִד דִּיּוּקְנָא דְּבֵי מַקְדְּשָׁא וְכָל תִּקּוּנוֹי), he sang this song over Shlomo his son (אָמַר שִׁירָתָא עַל שְׁלֹמֹה בְּרֵיהּ), and said: “Unless Hashem builds the house…”
Another matter: “A Song of Ascents, of Shlomo” — for the king to whom all shalom belongs And this song is a song and praise above all other songs (וְהַאי שִׁירָתָא אִיהוּ שִׁירָתָא וְתוּשְׁבַּחְתָּא עַל כָּל שְׁאַר שִׁירָתָא), and this song rises above all (וְשִׁירָתָא הֲדָא סַלְּקָא עַל כֻּלְּהוּ). “Unless Hashem builds the house…” — that King David saw all those seven pillars (אִם יְיָ' לֹא יִבְנֶה בַיִת — דְּחָמָא דָּוִד מַלְכָּא, כָּל אִינּוּן עַמּוּדִין שִׁבְעָה), upon which this house stands (דְּהַאי בַּיִת קָאִים עָלַיְיהוּ), that they stand in rows upon rows to build this house (דְּאִינּוּן קַיְימֵי שׁוּרִין שׁוּרִין לְמִבְנִי הַאי בַּיִת). Above them all stands the Master of the House (לְעֵילָּא מִכֻּלְּהוּ קַיְּימָא מָארֵיהּ דְּבֵיתָא), who walks upon them (דְּאָזִיל עַל גַּבַּיְיהוּ), and gives them strength and might (וְיָהִיב לוֹן חֵילָא וְתוּקְפָּא), to each and every one according to what is fitting (לְכָל חַד וְחַד כְּדְקָא יֵאוֹת). And concerning this, David said: if this King to whom all shalom belongs (וְעַל דָּא אָמַר דָּוִד: אִי הַאי מַלְכָּא דִּשְׁלָמָא כֹּלָּא דִּילֵיהּ), who is the Master of the House (דְּאִיהוּ מָארֵיהּ דְּבֵיתָא), does not build this house (לָא בָּנֵי לְהַאי בֵּיתָא), then in vain do its builders labor in it (שָׁוְא עָמְלוּ בוֹנָיו בּוֹ), those pillars (אִינּוּן [פי': עמודים) who stand to build this house (קַיָּימִין דְּקַיְימִין לְמִבְנִי עַל הַאי בֵּיתָא). “Unless Hashem guards the city…” — this refers again to the King to whom all shalom belongs “The watchman watches in vain” — this is that one established upon the world And who is he? The Tzaddik (וּמַנּוּ: צַדִּיק), for he is the one who watches over this city (דְּהָא אִיהוּ נָטִיר לָהּ לְהַאי עִיר).
What is written afterward (מַה כְּתִיב לְבָתַר): “For therefore I have seen your face as one sees the face of Elohim, and you were pleased with me” (כִּי עַל כֵּן רָאִיתִי פָנֶיךָ כִּרְאוֹת פְּנֵי אֱלֹהִים וַתִּרְצֵנִי) (Bereshit 33). That he saw in those faces of Esav the likeness that Sama’el himself had appeared to him in (דְּחָמָא בְּאִינּוּן אַנְפִּין דְּעֵשָׂו כְּדִּיוּקְנָא דְּאִתְחָזֵי לֵיהּ סָמָאֵ״ל מַמָּשׁ), for in every place that a person is connected, so does it appear in his face (דְּהָא בְּכָל אֲתָר דְּבַּר נָשׁ אִתְקָשַּׁר, הָכִי אִתְחָזֵי בְּאַנְפּוֹי). And you, holy ones above (וְאַתּוּן קַדִּישֵׁי עֶלְיוֹנִין), the Shekhinta is with you (שְׁכִינְתָּא בַּהֲדַיְיכוּ), and your faces are like her faces (וְאַנְפִּין דִּלְכוֹן כְּאִינּוּן אַנְפִּין דִּילָהּ); fortunate are you (זַכָּאִין אַתוּן). He said: If we were on one path, I would have gone with you I would have sat with you (הֲוֵינָא יַתְבֵי עִמְּכוֹן); now that you are on your path and I am on my path (הַשְּׁתָּא דְּאַתּוּן לְאָרְחַיְיכוּ, וַאֲנָא לְאָרְחִי), I separate from you with words of Orayta
He opened and said (פָּתַח וְאָמַר): “A Song of Ascents, of Shlomo: Unless Hashem builds the house, those who build it labor in vain; unless Hashem guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain” p1-38(שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת לִשְׁלֹמֹה אִם יְיָ' לֹא יִבְנֶה בַיִת שָׁוְא עָמְלוּ בוֹנָיו בּוֹ אִם יְיָ' לֹא יִשְׁמָר עִיר שָׁוְא שָׁקַד שׁוֹמֵר) (Psalms 127). And did Shlomo say this praise when he built the Beit haMikdash?
Not so (לָאו הָכִי), for King David said it for King Shlomo his son (דְּהָא דָּוִד מַלְכָּא אֲמַר לֵיהּ בְּגִין שְׁלֹמֹה מַלְכָּא בְּרֵיהּ), when Natan came to him and said regarding Shlomo that he would build the Beit haMikdash (כַּד אָתָא נָתָן לְגַבֵּיהּ, וְאֲמַר לֵיהּ עַל שְׁלֹמֹה דְּאִיהוּ יִבְנִי בֵּי מַקְדְּשָׁא). And afterward, King David saw the image of the Beit haMikdash for Shlomo his son When David saw the image of the Beit haMikdash and all of its arrangements (כֵּיוָן דְּחָמָא דָּוִד דִּיּוּקְנָא דְּבֵי מַקְדְּשָׁא וְכָל תִּקּוּנוֹי), he sang a song over Shlomo his son (אָמַר שִׁירָתָא עַל שְׁלֹמֹה בְּרֵיהּ), and said: “Unless Hashem builds the house…” Another explanation (דָּבָר אַחֵר): “A Song of Ascents, of Shlomo” — to the king to whom shalom belongs (שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת לִשְׁלֹמֹה, לְמַלְכָּא דִּשְׁלָמָא דִּילֵיהּ). And this song is a song and a praise above all other songs (וְהַאי שִׁירָתָא אִיהוּ שִׁירָתָא וְתוּשְׁבַּחְתָּא עַל כָּל שְׁאַר שִׁירָתָא), and this song ascends above them all (וְשִׁירָתָא הֲדָא סַלְּקָא עַל כֻּלְּהוּ). “Unless Hashem builds the house” — for King David saw all those seven pillars upon which this house stands (אִם יְיָ' לֹא יִבְנֶה בַיִת, דְּחָמָא דָּוִד מַלְכָּא כָּל אִינּוּן עַמּוּדִין שִׁבְעָה דְּהַאי בַּיִת קָאִים עָלַיְיהוּ), that they stand in rows upon rows to build this house (דְּאִינּוּן קַיְימֵי שׁוּרִין שׁוּרִין לְמִבְנִי הַאי בַּיִת).
Above them all stands the Master of the House, who goes upon them (לְעֵילָּא מִכֻּלְּהוּ קַיְּימָא מָארֵיהּ דְּבֵיתָא דְּאָזִיל עַל גַּבַּיְיהוּ), and gives them strength and power (וְיָהִיב לוֹן חֵילָא וְתוּקְפָּא) to each and every one as is proper (לְכָל חַד וְחַד כְּדְקָא יֵאוֹת). And concerning this David said: If this king to whom all shalom belongs, who is the Master of the House, does not build this house (וְעַל דָּא אָמַר דָּוִד: אִי הַאי מַלְכָּא דִּשְׁלָמָא כֹּלָּא דִּילֵיהּ דְּאִיהוּ מָארֵיהּ דְּבֵיתָא, לָא בָּנֵי לְהַאי בֵּיתָא), then in vain did its builders labor in it — those pillars that stand to build upon this house (שָׁוְא עָמְלוּ בוֹנָיו בּוֹ, אִינּוּן [פי': עמודים] קַיָּימִין דְּקַיְימִין לְמִבְנִי עַל הַאי בֵּיתָא). “Unless Hashem guards the city” — this refers to the king to whom all shalom belongs “In vain does the watchman stay awake” — this is the one establishment upon which the world is founded And who is that? The Tzaddik (וּמַנּוּ: צַדִּיק), for he guards this city (דְּהָא אִיהוּ נָטִיר לָהּ לְהַאי עִיר).
