Ten curtains they are, (עֶשֶׂר יְרִיעוֹת אִינּוּן,) for they are ten firmaments. And who are the curtains of the Mishkan, that they are ten? And they exist to be known to those wise of heart.

One who knows them, (מַאן דְּיִנְדַּע בְּהוּ,) contemplates great wisdom (אִסְתַּכַּל בְּחָכְמְתָא סַגְיָא), and in the secrets of the world (וּבְרָזִין דְּעָלְמָא), and looks above to that place (וְאִסְתַּכַּל לְעֵילָּא בְּהַהוּא אֲתָר), where each and every one is connected to it (דְּכָל חַד וְחַד אִתְדַּבָּק בֵּיהּ), except for two that stand at the right and at the left (בַּר תְּרֵין אִינּוּן דְּקַיְּימָן בִּימִינָא וּבִשְׂמָאלָא), and they are hidden with the Shekhinta.

Rabbi Yosi said: nine firmaments there are, (רַבִּי יוֹסִי אָמַר תֵּשַׁע רְקִיעִין אִינּוּן,) and the Shekhinta, she is the tenth. For if you say because it is written “ten,” (דְּאִי תֵּימָא בְּגִין דִּכְתִּיב עֶשֶׂר,) it excludes the Shekhinta (בַּר מִשְּׁכִינְתָּא אִיהוּ). If so, then the Shekhinta would be the eleventh, who stands over the ten.

Rather, certainly they are nine, (אֶלָּא וַדַּאי תֵּשַׁע אִינּוּן,) and they are the nine days between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, (וְאִינּוּן תֵּשַׁע יוֹמִין שֶׁבֵּין רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה לְיוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים,) and she is the tenth. In this manner, the Mishkan is ten curtains. These ten firmaments are the secret of secrets, (אִינּוּן עֶשֶׂר רְקִיעִין רָזָא דְּרָזִין,) that was not delivered to any but those who know wisdom. And all is in the secrets of the Holy Luminary, (וְכֹלָּא אִיהוּ בְּרָזִין דְּבוּצִינָא קַדִּישָׁא,) who reveals the secret of each and every firmament, (דְּאִיהוּ גַּלֵּי רָזָא דְּכָל רְקִיעָא וּרְקִיעָא,) and they are the ministers who serve in each one.

Seven firmaments there are above, (שֶׁבַע רְקִיעִין אִינּוּן לְעֵילָּא,) and seven firmaments below, (שֶׁבַע רְקִיעִין אִינּוּן לְתַתָּא,) corresponding to that which is above. Seven firmaments there are, (שֶׁבַע רְקִיעִין אִינּוּן,) in which are stars and constellations to direct this world (דְּבְהוּ כּוֹכָבַיָּא וּמַזָּלֵי לְאַנְהָגָא עָלְמָא דָא), each according to its path (כְּפוּם אָרְחֵיהּ), as is needed for it.

In all of them, the seventh is superior, (בְּכֻלְּהוּ שְׁבִיעָאָה עָדִיף,) except for the eighth, (בַּר תְּמִינָאָה,) which directs them all, (דְּקָא מַדְבַּר לְכֻלְּהוּ,) and stands over them all. It is written: “Extol the Rider in Aravot” (Psalms 68) (כְּתִיב סֹלּוּ לָרוֹכֵב בָּעֲרָבוֹת), who is the Rider in Aravot? (מַאן רוֹכֵב בָּעֲרָבוֹת) And what are these Aravot? (וּמַאן אִינּוּן עֲרָבוֹת) Rather, Aravot is the seventh firmament.

Why is it called Aravot? (אֲמַאי אִתְקְרֵי עֲרָבוֹת) Because it includes fire and water as one, (עַל דְּאִיהוּ כָּלִיל מֵאֵשָׁא וּמַיָּא כַּחֲדָא,) and from the south side, and from the north side, (וּמִסִּטְרָא דְּדָרוֹם, וּמִסִּטְרָא דְּצָפוֹן,) and it is intermingled from two sides. And if you say: if so, (וְאִי תֵּימָא, אִי הָכִי,) two Aravot that are joined in the lulav— (שְׁתֵּי עֲרָבוֹת דְּקָא מִתְחַבְּרָן בְּלוּלָב,) and we have learned: Aravot, (וְתָנֵינָן עֲרָבוֹת,) this is what is written: “Extol the Rider in Aravot.” If so, who gives thighs into a body, (אִי הָכִי, מַאן יָהִיב יַרְכִּין בְּגוּפָא,) or a body into thighs?

For this produces fruit and limbs, (דְּהָא דָּא עָבִיד פֵּרִין וְאֵיבִין,) and this does not produce fruit and limbs. p1-40(וְדָא לָא עָבִיד פֵּרִין וְאֵיבִין). Rather, surely all is the secret of Aravot in the lulav, (אֶלָּא, וַדַּאי כֹּלָּא הוּא רָזָא דַּעֲרָבוֹת דְּבַלוּלָב,) they are the Aravot of the lulav, (אִינּוּן עֲרָבוֹת דְּבַלוּלָב,) one is fire, and one is water, (חַד אֵשׁ, וְחַד מַיִם). In this secret that includes them all, (בְּרָזָא דָּא דְּכֻלְּהוּ,) and it is the seventh, (וְאִיהוּ שְׁבִיעָאָה,) it is fire and water combined as one, (אִיהוּ אֵשׁ וּמַיִם כָּלִיל כַּחֲדָא,) in one secret, (בְּרָזָא חֲדָא,) and because Aravot is the inclusive secret of all six others, (וּבְגִין דַּעֲרָבוֹת אִיהוּ רָזָא כְּלָלָא דְּכֻלְּהוּ שִׁית אַחֲרָנִין,) it is the secret of supernal chariot, (אִיהוּ רָזָא דִּרְתִיכָא עִלָּאָה,) and the Kudsha Berikh Hu is aroused in this firmament, (וְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אִתְרְעֵי בְּהַאי רְקִיעָא,) more than all the firmaments, (יַתִּיר מִכֻּלְּהוּ רְקִיעִין,) and His desire is constantly to adorn that firmament (וְתִיאוּבְתֵיהּ תָּדִיר לְאַתְקְנָא לְהַהוּא רְקִיעָא) in supernal beauty. And concerning this it is written: “Extol the Rider in Aravot” (Psalms 68) (וְעַל דָּא, סֹלּוּ לָרֹכֵב בָּעֲרָבוֹת), to Him who rides in Aravot. And who is He? (וּמַאן אִיהוּ) That hidden and concealed firmament, (הַהוּא רָקִיעַ טָמִיר וְגָנִיז,) that stands over the Chayot, (דְּקַיְּימָא עַל גַּבֵּי חֵיוָתָא,) who is the one that rides in Aravot. “And exult before Him” p1-41(וְעִלְזוּ לְפָנָיו). It is not written: “from before Him,” but “before Him,” (מִלְּפָנָיו לָא כְּתִיב, אֶלָּא לְפָנָיו,) for there is no one who can know anything of Him.

But “before Him,”—one who enters before this firmament, (אֲבָל לְפָנָיו, מַאן דְּעָיִיל לְקָמֵיהּ דְּהַאי רְקִיעָא,) must enter with joy, (אִצְטְרִיךְ לְמֵיעַל בְּחֶדְוָה,) and not in sadness at all, (וְלָא בַּעֲצִיבוּ כְּלַל,) because this firmament causes that there cannot dwell there sadness or anger at all, (בְּגִין דְּהַאי רְקִיעָא גָּרִים, דְּתַמָּן לָא שַׁרְיָא עֲצִיבוּ וְרוּגְזָא כְּלַל,) for there, all is joy. And for this reason, the Kohen Gadol who stood before Him, (וְעַל דָּא, כֹּהֵן גָּדוֹל דְּקַיְּימָא לְקָמֵיהּ,) would not enter the Holy Place (לָא הֲוָה עָאל לְבֵי קוּדְשָׁא), except in joy, (בַּר בְּחֶדְוָה,) and to display joy, (וּלְאַחֲזָאָה חֶדְוָה,) for the place causes it. And on this it is written: “Serve Hashem with joy; come before Him with song” (Psalms 100) For it is required that no sadness be seen there.
