Rabbi Shim‘on was once sitting by the gate of Lod, and Rabbi Ḥiyya was with him A certain child met him Rabbi Shim‘on said: Surely Kudsha Berikh Hu is now aroused in the world for small days (אָמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן וַדַּאי דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אִתְרְעֵי [נ״א אִתְעַר] בְּעָלְמָא הַשְׁתָּא לְיוֹמִין זְעִירִין), a great cycle for the kings of the earth, these against these (גִּלְגּוּלָא רַבָּא לְמַלְכֵי אַרְעָא אִלֵּין בְּאִלֵּין). Surely, while they are accusing one against the other, Yisrael shall be in relief
The Yenuka said: Behold, on this day the awakening began, for on this day much blood is spilled in the world Rabbi Ḥiyya said to him: From where does this child have it? Rabbi Shim‘on said: At times prophecy falls upon the mouth of children, and they prophesy more than one prophet
The Yenuka said: And is it a desire in children to have prophecy? Behold, the verse is fulfilled From where? For it is written: “And all your children shall be taught of Hashem” (Isaiah 54) (מְנָלָן. They are surely taught of Hashem (אִינּוּן וַדַּאי לִמּוּדֵי יְיָ), and prophecy comes forth from them (וּנְבוּאָה מִנְּהוֹן נָפְקָא), which is not the case for all the world, but only for Yisrael (מַה דְּלֵית הָכִי לְכָל עָלְמָא, אֶלָּא לְיִשְׂרָאֵל בִּלְחוֹדוֹי). As it is written concerning them: “And all your children shall be taught of Hashem” (Isaiah 54) And because of this, prophecy goes forth from them Rabbi Shim‘on came and kissed him, and said: From my days I have never heard this, except now
This is the command of Kudsha Berikh Hu to Moshe (דָּא פִּקּוּדָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְמֹשֶׁה): “And you shall make the boards of the Mishkan of acacia wood, standing” (Exodus 26) (וְעָשִׂיתָ אֶת הַקְּרָשִׁים לַמִּשְׁכָּן עֲצֵי שִׁטִּים עוֹמְדִים). In likeness of above Some say: Rabbi Yitzḥak opened And it is written: “Seraphim standing, each with six wings…” The work of the Mishkan is with those boards, in likeness of those Seraphim In this place, these are standing, and those are standing
And if you say: Behold, all the hosts of heaven stand (וְאִי תֵּימָא, וְהָא כָּל חַיָּילֵי שְׁמַיָא אִינּוּן עוֹמְדִים כֻּלְּהוּ), as it is said: “And I will give you walkings among these that stand” (Zechariah 3) (כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר וְנָתַתִּי לְךָ מַהְלְכִים בֵּין הָעוֹמְדִים הָאֵלֶּה). And it is written: “And all the host of heaven stood by Him” (1 Kings 22) For behold, all the supernal legions have no joints, and all stand in standing But surely all of them stand, and at times these are called Seraphim, and at times they ascend in another name, but all of them stand in one name
And this verse they established (some say: Rabbi Yitzḥak opened (וְהַאי קְרָא אוּקְמוּהָ, [נ״א רַבִּי יִצְחָק פָּתַח]): “A psalm of David: Hashem is my shepherd, I shall not want” (Psalms 23) (כְּתִיב מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד יְיָ רֹעִי לֹא אֶחְסָר). Behold, it has been said (הָא אִתְּמַר): What is the difference between “A psalm of David” (מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד) and “Of David, a psalm” (לְדָוִד מִזְמוֹר)? And here, the Shekhinta came first and rested upon him at the beginning “Hashem is my shepherd”—but why did the Shekhinta come first here, for David needed to begin first—some say: to arouse first (יְיָ רֹעִי, וְכִי אֲמַּאי שְׁכִינְתָּא קַדְמָא הָכָא, וְהָא דָּוִד אִצְטְרִיךְ לְאַקְדְּמָא [ס״א לְאַתְעֲרָא] אִיהוּ בְּקַדְמִיתָא), since he requested sustenance from Kudsha Berikh Hu (הוֹאִיל וּבָעֵי מְזוֹנֵיהּ מֵעִם קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא).
Rather, surely the Shekhinta came first and rested upon him, and aroused him to praise the King with this praise, and to request sustenance from before the King For so it is required: concerning the matter of sustenance, she is the one who asks, and it is her will, for all the children of the world require sustenance
For when Kudsha Berikh Hu desires to send sustenance to the world, she first takes it, and through her the sustenance goes forth to all worlds And because of this, she preceded in this matter of sustenance, and rested upon David “Hashem is my shepherd” Hashem is my shepherd, like the shepherd of the wilderness who feeds his flock in a place of grass and herbs, so that nothing is lacking for them So too Kudsha Berikh Hu is my shepherd, to sustain me in all that I need Another interpretation: “Hashem is my shepherd” (דָּבָר אַחֵר יְיָ רֹעִי). We have learned: the sustenance of man is difficult before Kudsha Berikh Hu as the splitting of the Sea of Reeds Here there are two aspects, and both are in the way of truth
One reason is that Kudsha Berikh Hu performs all His deeds with judgment and with truth (חַד בְּגִין דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא כָּל עוֹבָדוֹי בְּדִינָא וּקְשׁוֹט), and upon judgment and truth the whole world is sustained (וְעַל דִּינָא וּקְשׁוֹט אִתְקָיָּים כָּל עָלְמָא). And every single day and every single time He judges the whole world with judgment—upon the Tzaddikim, upon the wicked, and upon all the children of the world (דָּן כָּל עָלְמָא בְּדִינָא לְצַּדִּיקֵי וְלִרְשִׁיעֵי וּלְכָל בְּנֵי עָלְמָא), as it is said: “For Tzaddik is Hashem, He loves righteousness” (Psalms 11) (כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר כִּי צַדִּיק יְיָ צְדָקוֹת אָהֵב). And when He judges mankind, and sees how many are guilty and how many sins are before Him (וְכַד אִיהוּ דָּן בְּנֵי נָשָׁא, וְחָמֵי בְּנֵי נָשָׁא כַּמָה חַיָּיבִין, וְכַמָּה חֲטָאִין קָמֵיהּ), then it is difficult in His eyes to give them sustenance at all times (כְּדֵין קְשֵׁה בְּעֵינוֹי לְמֵיהַב לוֹן מְזוֹנָא בְּכָל זִמְנָא), for He must provide for the guilty and for the sinful (בְּגִין דְּאִית לֵיהּ לְמֵיזָן חַיָּיבַיָּא, וּלְאִינּוּן דְּחֲטָאן).
And yet, He acts with them beyond the line of strict judgment (וְאִיהוּ עָבִיד עִמְּהוֹן לְגוֹ מִשּׁוּרַת הַדִּין), and nourishes and sustains them according to the supernal Chesed (וְזָן וּמְפַרְנֵס לוֹן כְּפוּם חֶסֶד עִלָּאָה), which extends and flows (דְּאִתְמְשָׁךְ וְאִתְנְגִיד) upon all the peoples—some say: upon the nations and the children of the world (עַל כָּל [ס״א עַמִּין וּבְנֵי] עָלְמָא). And through it He nourishes and sustains all (וּבֵיהּ אִיהוּ זָן וּמְפַרְנֵס לְכֹלָּא): the Tzaddikim, the pious, the wicked, all the children of the world, and all the living creatures, the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens (לְצַּדִּיקֵי וּלְחַסִידֵּי וְלִרְשִׁיעֵי, וּלְכָל אִינּוּן בְּנֵי עָלְמָא, וּלְכָל חֵיוָן וּבְעִירֵי חַקְלָא, וְעוֹפֵי שְׁמַיָא)—from the horns of the wild ox to the eggs of lice (מִקַּרְנֵי רְאֵמִים עַד בֵּיצֵי כְּלָמֵי). And nothing remains in the world that He does not nourish and sustain Even though it is difficult before Him, according to the deeds of mankind (אַף עַל גַּב דִּקְשֵׁה קַמֵּיהּ, לְפוּם עוֹבָדִין דִּבְנֵי עָלְמָא), it is as difficult as the splitting of the Sea of Reeds (כִּקְרִיעַת יַם סוּף).
