Daf 208a (דַּף ר״ח ע״א)

After Shabbat departs (לְבָתַר דְּנָפִיק שַׁבְּתָא), a person must make distinction between sacred and profane (בָּעֵי בַּר נָשׁ לְאַפְרָשָׁא בֵּין קֹדֶשׁ לְחוֹל). Why? (אֲמַאי) Because permission is given to the lower appointed ones to rule over the world (דְּהָא אִתְיְהִיב רְשׁוּ לִמְמָנָן דִּלְתַתָּא לְשַׁלְּטָאָה עַל עָלְמָא), and over all the workings of the world (וּבְכָל עוֹבָדִין דְּעָלְמָא), to show the unification in a holy place (לְאַחֲזָאָה יִחוּדָא בְּאֲתָר קַדִּישָׁא), in supernal holiness (בִּקְדוּשָּׁה עִלָּאָה), and to separate below from the supernal unification (וּלְאַפְרְשָׁא לְתַתָּא מִיִחוּדָא עִלָּאָה), and to bless upon the light of fire (וּלְבָרְכָא עַל נְהוֹרָא דְּאֶשָּׁא).

Because all other fires are concealed and hidden on the day of Shabbat (בְּגִין דְּכָל אֶשִּׁין אַחֲרָנִין אִתְטְמָרוּ וְאִתְגְּנִיזוּ בְּיוֹמָא דְּשַׁבְּתָא), except for one fire of supernal holiness (בַּר אֶשָּׁא חַד דִּקְדוּשָׁה עִלָּאָה), which is revealed and included in the holiness of Shabbat (דְּאִתְגַּלְיָא וְאִתְכְּלִילָא בִּקְדוּשָׁא דְּשַׁבְּתָא). And when this fire is revealed (וְכַד הַאי אֶשָּׁא אִתְגַּלְיָיא), all other fires are concealed and hidden before it (כָּל אֶשִּׁין אַחֲרָנִין אִתְטְמָרוּ וְאִתְגְּנִיזוּ קַמֵּיהּ). And this fire is the fire of the binding of Yitzchak (וְהַאי אֶשָּׁא, אִיהִי דַּעֲקֵידָה דְּיִצְחָק), which flared upon the altar (דְּאִתְלָהֲטָא עַל גַּבֵּי מַדְבְּחָא).

Therefore, one must bless upon the fire (בְּגִין כַּךְ, בָּעֵי לְבָרְכָא עַל נְהוֹרָא דְּאֶשָּׁא). And this fire is not from weekday fire (וְהַאי אֶשָּׁא, לָא בָּעֵי אֶשָּׁא דְּחוֹל), but the fire of Shabbat (אֶלָּא אֶשָּׁא דְּשַׁבָּת), and this fire is the fire that issues from the supernal fire (וְהַאי אֶשָּׁא, אִיהוּ אֶשָּׁא דְּנָפִיק מֵהַהוּא אֶשָּׂא דִּלְעֵילָּא). And this is a fire that bears fire (וְדָא אִיהוּ אֶשָּׁא דְּסָבִיל אֶשָּׁא). And once this fire that comes from the supernal fire is blessed with the blessing of light (וְכֵיוָן דְּהַאי אֶשָּׁא דְּנָפִיק מֵאֶשָּׁא דִּלְעֵילָּא אִתְבָּרְכָא בִּבְרָכָה דִּנְהוֹרָא), then all other fires go out (כְּדֵין כָּל שְׁאַר אֶשִּׁין אַחֲרָנִין נָפְקִין), and are appointed to their places (וְאִתְמַנָּן בְּדוּכְתַּיְיהוּ), and permission is given to them to illuminate (וְאִתְיְיהִיב לוֹן רְשׁוּתָא לְאַנְהָרָא).

At the time when the blessing is said over the fire (בְּהַהִיא שַׁעֲתָא דְּקָא מְבָרְכִין עַל אֶשָּׁא), four chariots are summoned (אִזְדַּמְּנָן אַרְבַּע רְתִיכִין), four channels below (אַרְבַּע מַשִׁרְיָין לְתַתָּא), to shine from that blessed fire (לְאַנְהָרָא מֵהַהוּא אֶשָּׁא מְבָרְכָא), and they are called “lights of the fire” (וְאִינּוּן אִקְרוּן מְאוֹרֵי הָאֵשׁ). Therefore (בְּגִין כַּךְ), we must press the four fingers of the right hand (בָּעֵינָן לְאַכְפְּיָא ד׳ אֶצְבְּעָאן דִּידָא דִּימִינָא), and shine them within that light of the lamp which is blessed (וּלְאַנְהֲרָא לוֹן מִגּוֹ הַהוּא נְהוֹרָא דִּשְׁרָגָא דְּמִתְבָּרְכָא). And those fingers (וְאִינּוּן אֶצְבְּעָאן), are a hint to those lights of fire (רֶמֶז לְאִינּוּן מְאוֹרֵי הָאֵשׁ), which shine and rule from that light of the lamp which is blessed (דִּנְהִירֵי וְשַׁלְטֵי מֵהַהוּא נְהוֹרָא דִּשְׁרָגָא דְּמִתְבָּרְכָא). And since these are lower levels (וּבְגִין דְּאִינּוּן דַּרְגִּין לְתַתָּא), when a person places his fingers before the light of the lamp (כַּד אַחְזֵי בַּר נָשׁ אֶצְבְּעָאן קַמֵּי הַהוּא נְהוֹרָא דִּשְׁרָגָא), he must lower them before it (בָּעֵי לְאַכְפְּיָיא לוֹן קַמֵּיהּ), for that light dominates them (בְּגִין דְּהַהוּא נְהוֹרָא שַׁלְטָא עָלַיְיהוּ), and they shine from it (וְאִינּוּן נָהֲרִין מִנֵּיהּ).

In other blessings (בִּשְׁאַר בִּרְכָאן), we must raise the fingers (בָּעֵינָן לְזַקְפָא לוֹן לְאֶצְבְּעָאן), in order to show supernal holiness (בְּגִין לְאַחֲזָאָה קְדוּשָּׁה עִלָּאָה), of supernal levels (דְּדַרְגִּין עִלָּאִין), which rule over all (דְּשַׁלְטִין עַל כֹּלָּא), for the holy Name is crowned through them (דִּשְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא אִתְעֲטָּר בְּהוּ), and sanctified through them (וְאִתְקַדָּשׁ בְּהוּ), and all levels are blessed together (וְאִתְבָּרְכָן כֻּלְּהוּ דַּרְגִּין כַּחֲדָא), and shine from the Supernal Luminary of all (וְנָהֲרִין מִגּוֹ בּוּצִינָא עִלָּאָה דְּכֹלָּא). Therefore, we must raise them upward (וּבְּגִין כָּךְ בָּעֵינָן לְזַקְפָא לוֹן לְעֵילָּא). But here, we must lower the fingers before the lamp (וְהָכָא בָּעֵינָן לְאַכְפְּיָיא אֶצְבְּעָאן קָמֵי שַׁרְגָּא), to show the lower levels (בְּגִין לְאַחֲזָאָה דַּרְגִּין דִּלְתַתָּא), which shine from the Supernal Luminary (דְּנָהֲרִין מִגּוֹ בּוּצִינָא דִּלְעֵילָּא), and from it they rule and shine (וּמֵהָכָא שַׁלְטִין וְנָהֲרִין מִנָּהּ), and these are the lights of fire (וְאִינּוּן מְאוֹרֵי הָאֵשׁ).

On every weekday (בְכָל יוֹמָא), we bless “lights of light” (אֲנָן מְבָרְכֵינָן מְאוֹרֵי אוֹר), which are the supernal lights (דְּאִינּוּן נְהוֹרִין עִלָּאִין), that stand within that primordial light (דְּקַיְימָן בְּהַהוּא אוֹר קַדְמָאָה), and all levels are blessed (וְאִתְבָּרְכָן כֻּלְּהוּ דַּרְגִּין), and they all shine together (וְנָהֲרִין כֻּלְּהוּ כַּחֲדָא), from the supernal lamp (מִגּוֹ בּוּצִינָא עִלָּאָה). And these are called “lights of the fire” (וְהָנִי אִקְרוּן מְאוֹרֵי הָאֵשׁ). And because of this secret (וּבְגִינֵי רָזָא דָּא), we bless “Creator of the lights of the fire” (מְבָרְכִין בּוֹרֵא מְאוֹרֵי הָאֵשׁ). And if you say (וְאִי תֵּימָא): Why “Creator” (אֲמַאי בּוֹרֵא), and not “Who illuminates the lights of fire”? (וְלָא אָמְרוּ מֵאִיר מְאוֹרֵי הָאֵשׁ). Since they shine from that fire (הוֹאִיל וְקָא נַהֲרִין מֵהַהוּא אֵשׁ), from that blessed lamp (מֵהַהוּא בּוּצִינָא מְבָרְכָא).

But once Shabbat enters (אֶלָּא כֵּיוָן דְּעָאל שַׁבְּתָא), all those lower levels (כָּל אִינּוּן דַּרְגִּין דִּלְתַתָּא), and all those that shine and rule (וְכָל אִינּוּן דְּנָהֲרִין וְשַׁלְטִין), they all enter and are included in that lamp (כֻּלְּהוּ עָאלִין וְאִתְכְּלִילוּ בְּהַאי שַׁרְגָּא), and are concealed and hidden (וְאִתְטָמָרוּ וְאִתְגְּנִיזוּ), and are guarded within it (וְאִתְנְּטָרוּ בֵּיהּ), and are not seen in it (וְלָא יִתְחֲזוּן בֵּיהּ), except for that single point alone (אֶלָּא הַהוּא נְקוּדָה בִּלְחוֹדָהָא), and all of them are concealed within it (וְכֻלְּהוּ אִתְטְמָרוּ בְּגַוָּוה), all the days of Shabbat (כָּל יוֹמָא דְּשַׁבְּתָא).

Once Shabbat departs (כֵּיוָן דְּנָפַק שַׁבְּתָא), they are sent forth, each and every one (אַפִּיק לוֹן לְכָל חַד וְחַד), as though at that moment they were created (כְּאִילּוּ הַהִיא שַׁעֲתָא אִתְבְּרִיאוּ), and they all emerge and are created anew as at the beginning (וְנַפְקוּ כֻּלְּהוּ וְאִתְבְּרִיאוּ כְּמִלְקַדְּמִין), and are appointed over their places to rule (וְאִתְמְנִיאוּ עַל דּוּכְתַּיְיהוּ לְשַׁלְּטָאָה). Then this lamp is blessed (כְּדֵין אִתְבָּרְכָא הַאי שַׁרְגָּא), and they are subdued before it (וְאִתְכַּפְיָין קַמֵּיהּ), to give light (לְאַנְהָרָא). Once they shine (כֵּיוָן דְּנָהֲרִין), then each one is appointed over its place (כְּדֵין אִתְמְנּוּן כָּל חַד וְחַד עַל דּוּכְתֵּיהּ).

In this manner (כְּגַוְונָא דָּא), those supernal levels, which are called lights of light (אִינּוּן דַּרְגִּין עִלָּאִין, דְּאִקְרוּן מְאוֹרֵי אוֹר), rule by day (שַׁלְטִין בִּימָמָא), and shine from the Supernal Luminary (וְנָהֲרִין מִגּוֹ בּוּצִינָא עִלָּאָה). At the time that night falls (בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּרָמַשׁ לֵילְיָא), that supernal lamp gathers them (הַהוּא בּוּצִינָא עִלָּאָה כָּנִישׁ לוֹן), and brings them into itself (וְאָעִיל לוֹן בְּגַוֵּיהּ), until day shines again (עַד דְּנָהִיר יְמָמָא). Once Yisrael bless over the light by day (כֵּיוָן דִּמְבָרְכִין יִשְׂרָאֵל עַל נְהוֹרָא בִּימָמָא), then He brings them forth in the completeness of light (כְּדֵין אַפִּיק לוֹן בִּשְׁלִימוּ דִּנְהוֹרָא). And concerning this, we bless “Yotzer HaMe’orot” [Who forms the luminaries] (וְעַל דָּא מְבָרְכִין יוֹצֵר הַמְּאוֹרוֹת), and we do not say “Borei” (וְלָא אַמְרֵי בּוֹרֵא). [Some say: rather, “Yotzer.”] (ס״א אֶלָּא יוֹצֵר). Whereas here we say, “Borei Me’orei HaEsh” [Who creates the lights of fire] (וְהָכָא בּוֹרֵא מְאוֹרֵי הָאֵשׁ), because these are lower levels (בְּגִין דְּאִינּוּן דַּרְגִּין לְתַתָּא). And all of this is the mystery of the Etzba‘an [fingers] (וְכֹלָּא אִיהוּ רָזָא דְּאֶצְבְּעָאן), in which the supernal levels and the lower levels are hinted (בְּהוּ רָמִיז דַּרְגִּין עִלָּאִין וְדַרְגִּין תַּתָּאִין).

The supernal levels are made known (דַּרְגִּין עִלָּאִין אִשְׁתְּמוֹדְעַאן), through the raising of the fingers upward (בִּזְקִיפוּ דְּאֶצְבְּעָאן לְעֵילָּא), and through the raising of the fingers, the supernal levels are blessed (וּבִזְקִיפוּ דְּאֶצְבְּעָאן אִתְבָּרְכָן דַּרְגִּין עִלָּאִין), and the lower levels as one (וְדַרְגִּין תַּתָּאִין כַּחֲדָא). But through the lowering of the fingers (וּבִמְאִיכוּ דְּאֶצְבְּעָאן), only the lower levels are blessed to shine (אִתְבָּרְכָן לְאַנְהָרָא דַּרְגִּין תַּתָּאִין לְחוֹדַיְיהוּ).
