From here we learn (מִכָּאן אוֹלִיפְנָא), every man on whom come the afflictions of his Master, they are atonement for his sins (כָּל הַהוּא בַּר נָשׁ דְּיִסּוּרֵי דְּמָארֵיהּ אַתְיָין עָלֵיהּ, כַּפָּרָה דְּחוֹבוֹי אִינּוּן). Whoever sorrows for the afflictions of the Righteous, their sins are removed from the world And for this, on this day, we read “after the death” (וְעַל דָּא בְּיוֹמָא דָּא, קוֹרִין אַחֲרֵי מוֹת), that the people may hear and sorrow, and their sins be atoned (דְּיִשְׁמְעוּן עַמָּא, וְיִצְטַעֲרוּן, וְיִתְכַּפֵּר לְהוֹן).
Whoever sorrows or sheds tears, Kudsha Berikh Hu proclaims: your iniquity is removed and your sin atoned (Isaiah 6). Not only this, but his sons will not die in his days Concerning him it is written: he shall see seed, he shall prolong days (Isaiah 53). And Hashem said to Moshe: speak to Aharon your brother…
Rabbi Shimon opened: all rivers go to the sea, yet the sea is not full (Ecclesiastes 1). Rabbi Shimon said: woe to men, who have no eyes to see, no heart to understand They sleep and do not awaken until the day of darkness comes, and the Master demands reckoning And each day a herald calls upon them Their souls testify against them each day and night The Orayta raises voices, proclaiming: how long will fools love foolishness? (Proverbs 1). Whoever is simple, let him turn here… come eat of my bread and drink of my wine (Proverbs 9). But none bends his ear, and none arouses his heart
Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי), future generations will come (זְמִינִין דָּרֵי בַּתְרָאֵי דְּיֵיתוּן), when the Orayta will be forgotten from them (דְּיִתְנְשֵׁי אוֹרַיְיתָא מִבֵּינַיְיהוּ). The wise of heart will gather to their place (וְחַכִּימֵי לִבָּא יִתְכַּנְּשׁוּן לְאַתְרַיְיהוּ) some say, to the holy place (ס״א לְאַתְרָא קַדִּישָׁא). And none will be found who can close and open Woe to that generation From then onward, there will not be a generation like this one (וּמִכָּאן וּלְהָלְאָה, לָא יְהֵא דָּרָא כְּדָרָא דָּא), until the generation when King Messiah comes (עַד דָּרָא דְּיֵיתֵי מַלְכָּא מְשִׁיחָא), and knowledge will awaken in the world (וּמַנְדְּעָא יִתְעַר בְּעָלְמָא), as it is written: they shall all know Me, from small to great (דִּכְתִיב, כִּי כֻלָּם יֵדְעוּ אוֹתִי לְמִקְּטַנָּם וְעַד גְּדוֹלָם) (Jeremiah 31).
Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי): it is written: “And a river goes forth from Eden” (כְּתִיב, וְנָהָר יוֹצֵא מֵעֵדֶן) (Bereshit 2:10). And we learned: What is the name of that river? We established: its name is Yuval [Stream] (אוֹקִימְנָא יוּבַל שְׁמֵיהּ), as it is written: “And by the stream he shall send forth his roots” (דִּכְתִיב, וְעַל יוּבַל יְשַׁלַּח שָׁרָשָׁיו) (Yirmeyahu 17:8). In the book of Rav Hamnuna Sava, its name is Chayyim [Life] (וּבְסִפְרָא דְּרַב הַמְנוּנָא סָבָא, חַיִּים שְׁמֵיהּ), for from there life goes forth to the world (דִּמִתַּמָּן נָפְקִין חַיִּים לְעָלְמָא). These are called Chayyei Malka [The Life of the King] (וְאִינּוּן אִקְרוּן חַיֵּי מַלְכָּא). And we established: that great and mighty tree, in which there is sustenance for all, is called the Etz Chayyim [Tree of Life] (וְהָא אוֹקִימְנָא, הַהוּא אִילָנָא רַבָּא וְתַקִּיפָא, דְּמָזוֹן לְכֹלָּא בֵּיהּ, אִקְרֵי עֵץ חַיִּים). It is a tree that planted its roots in that Life, and all is beautiful
And it was taught (וְתָאנָא): that river brought forth deep streams in abundant flow, to water the garden and to saturate the trees and the plantings (הַהוּא נָהָר אַפִּיק נַחֲלִין עֲמִיקִין, בִּמְשַׁח רְבוּת, לְאַשְׁקָאָה גִּנְתָּא, וּלְרַוָּואָה אִילָנִין וּנְטִיעִין). As it is written: “The trees of Hashem are sated, the cedars of Lebanon that He planted” (דִּכְתִיב, יִשְׂבְּעוּ עֲצֵי יְיָ אַרְזֵי לְבָנוֹן אֲשֶׁר נָטָע) (Tehillim 104:16). And these streams extend, are drawn forth, and gather into two pillars, which we call Beri’ei [Healthy Ones]: Yakhin and Bo‘az (I Melakhim 7:21). And from there all those streams go forth and rest in one level called Tzaddik [Righteous One], as it is written: “And the Tzaddik is the foundation of the world” (וּמִתַּמָּן נָפְקִין כָּל אִינּוּן נַחֲלִין, וְשַׁרְיָין לוֹן בְּחַד דַּרְגָּא דְּאִקְרֵי צַדִּיק, דִּכְתִיב, וְצַדִּיק יְסוֹד עוֹלָם) (Mishlei 10:25). And all of them go and gather into that place called Yam [Sea], which is the Yamma deChokhmeta [Sea of Chokhmah] (וְכֻלְּהוּ אַזְלִין וּמִתְכַּנְּשִׁין לְהַהוּא אֲתַר דְּאִקְרֵי יָם, וְהוּא יַמָּא דְּחָכְמְתָא). This is what is written: “All the rivers go to the sea...” (Kohelet 1:7). And if you say (וְאִי תֵּימָא) that they reach this place and cease, and do not return (דְּהָא מָטוּ לַאֲתָר דָּא, וּפַסְקִין, וְלָא תַּיְיבִין), afterward it is written: “To the place where the rivers go, there they return to go” (לְבָתַר כְּתִיב, אֶל מְקוֹם שֶׁהַנְּחָלִים הוֹלְכִים, שָׁם הֵם שָׁבִים לָלָכֶת) (Kohelet 1:7).
For that river never ceases “They return” (הֵם שָׁבִים)—to what place do they return? To those two pillars, Netzach and Hod “To go” (לָלָכֶת)—through this Tzaddik [Righteous One] (בְּהַאי צַדִּיק), to find blessings and joy (לְאַשְׁכְּחָא בִּרְכָאן וְחִידוּ). This is the secret we learned: “This Leviathan You formed to play with” (וְהַיְינוּ רָזָא דְּתָנֵינָן, לִוְיָתָן זֶה יָצַרְתָּ לְשַׂחֶק בּוֹ) (Tehillim 104:26)—this is the Tzaddik [Righteous One] (דָּא צַדִּיק). “They all wait for You, to give them their food in its time” (כֻּלָּם אֵלֶיךָ יְשַׂבֵּרוּן, לָתֵת אָכְלָם בְּעִתּוֹ) (Tehillim 104:27). What is “its time”? This is the Matronita [Matron] (דָּא מַטְרוֹנִיתָא), who is called the time of the Tzaddik [Righteous One] (דְּאִקְרֵי עִתּוֹ דְּצַדִּיק). Therefore all await this time (וּבְגִין כָּךְ כֻּלְּהוּ מְחַכָּאן לְהַאי עִתּוֹ), and all who are nourished below are nourished from this place (כֻּלְּהוּ דְּאַתְּזְנָן לְתַתָּא, מֵאֲתַר דָּא אַתְּזְנָן). This is the secret we established: “The eyes of all wait for You...”
Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי): when this Kol [All] sweetens the Et [Time] and joins with her (בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּהַאי כֹּל, מְבַסֵּם לְעִתּוֹ, וּמִתְחַבְּרָא עִמֵּיהּ), all worlds are in joy, and all worlds are in blessing (כֻּלְּהוּ עָלְמִין בְּחֵידוּ, כֻּלְּהוּ עָלְמִין בְּבִרְכָּאן). Then peace is found above and below
But when the wicked of the world cause the blessings of those rivers not to be found there, and this Et [Time] draws nourishment from the Other Side, then judgments are aroused in the world, and peace is not found And when the children of the world seek to be blessed, they cannot receive blessing except through the hand of the Kohen [Priest] (וְכַד בָּעָאן בְּנֵי עָלְמָא לְאִתְבָּרְכָא, לָא יַכְלִין אֶלָּא עַל יְדָא דְּכַהֲנָא). For through him his crown is aroused, the Matronita is blessed, and blessings are found in all the worlds
It was taught (תָּאנָא): at that time Moshe sought this matter before Kudsha Berikh Hu (בְּהַהִיא שַׁעֲתָא, בָּעָא מֹשֶׁה קָמֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא מִלָּה דָא). He said to Him: If the children of the world return before You, through whose hand will they be blessed? Kudsha Berikh Hu said to him: And you say this to Me? (Vayikra 16:2), for blessings above and below are entrusted into his hands
