And these children from the sons of men (וְאִלֵּין בְּנִין דְּאוֹלִידַת מִבְּנֵי נָשָׁא), approach the daughters of men (מִשְׁתַּכְּחִין לָקֳבְלֵי נוּקְבֵי בְּנֵי נָשָׁא), they conceive from them (וּמִתְעַבְּרָן מִנַּיְיהוּ), and bear spirits (וְאוֹלִידָן רוּחִין). All go to the primordial Lilith (וְכֻלְּהוּ אַזְלִין לְלִילִית קַדְמִיתָא), and she raises them (וְהִיא מְגַדֶּלֶת לוֹן). She goes out into the world (וְהִיא נַפְקַת לְעָלְמָא), seeks children (וּבַעְיָא רַבְיָיהָא), sees the children of men (וְחָמַת רַבְיֵי בְּנֵי נָשָׁא), clings to them (וְאִתְדַּבְּקַת בְּהוּ), to kill them (לְקָטְלָא לְהוּ), and to bind with their spirits (וּלְאִשְׁתְּאֲבָא בְּרוּחַיְיהוּ דְּרַבְיֵי בְּנֵי נָשָׁא). She goes with that spirit Three holy spirits appear (וְאִזְדַמְּנָן תַּמָּן ג׳ רוּחִין קַדִּישִׁין), fly before her (וְטָאסִין קַמָּהּ), take that spirit (וְנַטְלִין הַהוּא רוּחָא), and set it before Kudsha Berikh Hu (וּמַנִיחִין לֵיהּ קָמֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא), where it is formed (וְתַמָּן מִתְגַּלְּפֵי).
Because of this, Orayta warned: “Sanctify yourselves and be holy” (בְּגִינֵי כַּךְ אוֹרַיְיתָא אַזְהֲרַת… If a man is holy, he does not fear her For then Kudsha Berikh Hu sends three holy angels (דִּכְדֵין זַמִּין קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְאִלֵּין ג׳ מַלְאֲכִין קַדִּישִׁין), they guard that child (וְנַטְרִין לֵיהּ לְהַהוּא רַבְיָא), and she cannot harm him (וְהִיא לָא יַכְלָא לְאַבְאָשָׁא לֵיהּ). “No evil shall befall you, no plague come near your tent” (לֹא תְאוּנֶּה אֵלֶיךָ רָעָה וְנֶגַע לֹא יִקְרַב בְּאָהֳלֶךָ) (Psalms 91), for “He shall command His angels” (כִּי מַלְאָכָיו יְצַוֶּה לָּךְ) and “Because he set his love, I shall deliver him” (כִּי בִי חָשַׁק וַאֲפַלְּטֵהוּ) (Psalms 90). But if a man is not holy (דְּאִי בַּר נָשׁ לָא אִשְׁתְּכַח קַדִּישָׁא), and draws a defiled spirit (וְאַשְׁלִיף רוּחָא מִסִּטְרָא דִּמְסָאֲבָא), she comes and plays with him in that child (כְּדֵין הִיא אַתְיָא וְחַיְּיכַת בֵּיהּ בְּהַהוּא רַבְיָא).
If she kills him (וְאִי קַטִּילַת לֵיהּ), she is bound to that spirit forever (אִשְׁתְּאֲבַת בְּהַהוּא רוּחָא, וְלָא תַּעְדֵי מִנֵיהּ לְעָלְמִין). And if you say about others she killed, and three holy ones appeared, and took that spirit וְנַטְלִין מִנָּהּ הַהוּא רוּחָא), behold they were not defiled—why did she have power? Rather, when a man is not sanctified, yet he did not intend defilement, nor was defiled וְלָא אִסְתְּאַב), she may rule over the body, but not over the spirit (בְּגִין כַּךְ יַכְלָא לְשַׁלְּטָאָה בְּגוּפָא, וְלָא בְּרוּחָא). And sometimes Na‘amah goes out into the world (וְזִמְנִין אִשְׁתְּכַח דְּנָפְקָת נַעֲמָה לְעָלְמָא), to warm herself from the sons of men (לְאִתְחַמְמָא מִבְּנֵי נָשָׁא). And a man is found in a bond—some say hardness—of lust with her
He awakens from his sleep (וְאִתְּעַר מִשֵּׁנָתֵיהּ), and holds his wife (וְאָחִיד בְּאִנְתְּתֵיהּ), and lies with her (וְשָׁכִיב עִמָהּ). But his desire is in the lust he had in his dream Then that child born comes from the side of Na‘amah For in her lust this one was found When Lilith goes out and sees him, she knows the matter (כַּד נַפְקָא לִילִית וְחָמָאת לֵיהּ, יַדְעַת מִלָּה), and she binds to him (וְהִיא אִתְקְטָרַת בֵּיהּ). She raises him like the other children of Na‘amah (וּמַגְדְּלַת לֵיהּ כְּאִינּוּן אָחֳרָנִין בְּנוֹי דְּנַעֲמָה), and she is often with him, and does not kill him (וְאִשְׁתְּכָחַת עִמֵּיהּ זִמְנִין סַגִּיאִין, וְלָא קַטָלָא לֵיהּ).
This is the man who in every new moon is stricken (הַאי הוּא בַּר נָשׁ, דִּבְכָל סִיהֲרָא וְסִיהֲרָא אִתְפְּגִים), and he will never be healed (וְלָא אִתְיָאֲשָׁא מִנֵּיהּ לְעָלְמִין). For at every new moon, when it is renewed in the world Lilith goes out and appoints herself over all those she raises and plays with Then that man is stricken at that time
Blessed are the Righteous, who sanctify themselves in the holiness of the King Of them it is written: “And it shall be, from new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath…” These matters King Shlomo revealed (מִלִּין אִלֵּין גַּלֵּי שְׁלֹמֹה מַלְכָּא), in the book of Ashmedai the king (בְּסִפְרָא דְּאַשְׁמְדָאי מַלְכָּא), and we found in it one thousand, four hundred and five kinds of defilements (וְאַשְׁכַּחְנָא בֵיהּ (ע״ט ע״א) אֶלַף וְאַרְבַּע מְאָה וַחֲמֵשׁ זִינֵי מְסַאֲבוּתָא), by which the sons of men are defiled (דְּמִסְתַּאֲבֵי בְּהוּ בְּנֵי נָשָׁא). For this Ashmedai revealed to King Shlomo
Woe to the sons of men (וַוי לְהוּ לִבְנֵי נָשָׁא), for all of them are sealed and their eyes shut (דְּכֻלְּהוּ אֲטִימִין וּסְתִימִין עַיְינִין), and they do not know, and do not hear, and do not consider how they exist in the world (וְלָא יַדְעִין, וְלָא שַׁמְעִין, וְלָא מַשְׁגִּיחִין, הֵיךְ קַיְימִין בְּעָלְמָא). And behold, the counsel and the remedy are before them, and they do not look
For the sons of men cannot be saved except through the counsel of the Orayta As it is written: “When there is among you a man who is not pure by reason of time in the night” (דִּכְתִּיב: כִּי יִהְיֶה בְךָ אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר לֹא יִהְיֶה טָהוֹר מִקְּרֵה לָיְלָה) (Deuteronomy 23). “Who is not pure”—precisely “By reason of time in the night”—precisely And this we have already established, as matters of the holy Orayta For so it is written in the holy Orayta: “And you shall sanctify yourselves and be holy, for I am Hashem your God” (דְּהָכִי כְּתִיב בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא קַדִּישָׁא: וְהִתְקַדִּשְׁתֶּם וִהְיִיתֶם קְדוֹשִׁים כִּי אֲנִי יְיָ אֱלֹהֵיכֶם).
