“And Kayin knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch” (וַיֵּדַע קַיִן אֶת אִשְׁתּוֹ וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד אֶת חֲנוֹךְ) (Bereshit 4). All these generations prevent him to be rectified through them And they are Enoch and Irad and Mechuya’el and Metusha’el and Lemekh And Lemekh took two wives, Adah and Tzilah Adah - Enoch for good, Enoch to train the youth according to his way Tzilah - evil training, and this is the Angel of Death who trains man with evil teachings Irad - afterwards he brings trembling into man in his limbs And after he causes man to fall into sins, he informs against him and shows to E-l all that he has done And this is Mechuya’el - showing to E-l And afterwards he descends and weakens his strength and kills him And this is Metusha’el - there is death of She’ol, and there is no death except poverty And afterwards he rules over him, and this is Lemekh - turned against him into a king And his two wives - one Adah, who testifies about man’s sins And the second Tzilah, who goes upon him like a shadow, as you say: “For our days upon earth are a shadow” (וְתִנְיָינָא צִלָּה דְאָזִיל עֲלֵיהּ כְּצֵל, כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמַר כִּי צֵל יָמֵינוּ עֲלֵי אָרֶץ) (Job 8). And it is written: “His days are like a passing shadow” (וּכְתִיב יָמָיו כְּצֵל עוֹבֵר) (Psalms 144).

“And Adah bore Yaval” (וַתֵּלֶד עָדָה אֶת יָבָל) (Bereshit 4). After he was killed in poverty, Adah and Tzilah ruled over him Yaval, like the heavens and the earth of which it is said: “For the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment” (יָבָל, כְּגַוְונָא דִשְׁמַיָּא וְאַרְעָא דְאִתְּמַר בְּהוֹן כִּי שָׁמַיִם כֶּעָשָׁן נִמְלָחוּ וְהָאָרֶץ כַּבֶּגֶד תִּבְלֶה) (Isaiah 51). And Yaval was the father of those who dwell in tents and cattle, gathering wealth And afterwards it is said of him: “Riches profit not” (וּלְבָתַר אִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ לֹא יוֹעִיל הוֹן) (Proverbs 11). And it has been said that poverty rules over him, which is death And there is no poverty before the Kudsha Berikh Hu like the poverty of Orayta And there is no death like those who transgress the words of Orayta, who are called “dead” (וְלֵית מָוֶת כְּאִינוּן דְּעָבְרִין עַל פִּתְגָּמֵי אוֹרַיְיתָא דְאִתְקְרִיאוּ מֵתִים). And because of this the verse said: “Return and live” (וּבְגִין דָּא אָמַר קְרָא שׁוּבוּ וִחְיוּ) (Ezekiel 18). And his brother was the father of all who play the harp and pipe, those who make music of every kind And the man who rejoices in them and busies himself with the vanities of the world, concerning him Kohelet said: “Rejoice, young man, in your youth, etc.” (Ecclesiastes 11). And afterwards what did he say to him? “Know that for all these things Elohim will bring you into judgment” (וּלְבָתַר מָה אָמַר לֵיהּ וְדָע כִּי עַל כָּל אֵלֶּה יְבִיאֲךָ הָאֱלֹהִי״ם בַּמִּשְׁפָּט) (Ecclesiastes 11). Concerning them the Masters of the Mishnah said: “Song in the house - destruction in the house” (דַּעֲלַיְיהוּ אָמְרוּ מָארֵי מַתְנִיתִין, זִמְרָא בְּבֵיתָא חָרְבָּא בְּבֵיתָא). But: “And you shall rejoice before Hashem your Elohim” (אֶלָּא וּשְׂמַחְתֶּם לִפְנֵי יְהו״ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ״ם) (Leviticus 23). In the manner of David, of whom it is said: “And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of Hashem came upon him” (כְּגַוְונָא דְדָוִד דְאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ וְהָיָה כְּנַגֵּן הַמְנַגֵּן וַתְּהִי עָלָיו יַד יְהו״ה) (II Kings 3).

“And Tzilah, she also bore Tuval-Kayin, an instructor of every craftsman in brass and iron” (וְצִלָּה גַם הִיא יָלְדָה אֶת תּוּבַל קַיִן, לוֹטֵשׁ כָּל חֹרֵשׁ נְחֹשֶׁת וּבַרְזֶל) (Bereshit 4:22). This is the evil inclination (דָּא יֵצֶר הָרָע), of whom it is said: “If your inclination overcomes you, draw it into the Beit Midrash, etc.” And the sister of Tuval-Kayin was Na’amah, this is the mother of demons And Lemekh, at the time that he rules over man, and it is within him to be as strong as stone and as iron, and he does not engage in Orayta, he rules over him and kills him And he makes in him wound and bruise (וְעָבִיד בֵּיהּ פֶּצַע וְחַבּוּרָה), as it is said: “For I have slain a man for my wound, and a young man for my bruise” (כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמַר כִּי אִישׁ הָרַגְתִּי לְפִצְעִי וְיֶלֶד לְחַבּוּרָתִי) (Bereshit 4:23). At that time the Kudsha Berikh Hu will take vengeance on both of them This is what is written: “If Kayin shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lemekh seventy and sevenfold” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב כִּי שִׁבְעָתַיִם יוּקַם קָיִן וְלֶמֶךְ שִׁבְעִים וְשִׁבְעָה) (Bereshit 4:24). This is what is written: “He will swallow up death forever” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב בִּלַּע הַמָּוֶת לָנֶצַח) (Isaiah 25:8).
