And my son, we have found in the Mishnah (וּבְרִי אַשְׁכַּחְנָא בְּמַתְנִיתִין), in the secret of lines, images, and colors (בְּרָזָא דְשִׁרְטוּטִין וְצִיּוּרִין וְגַוָּונִין), in the mystery of hidden secrets of secrets (בְּסִתְרָא דְרָזִין טְמִירָא דִטְמִירִין). Adam of Beri’ah, who is before all the ancients (דְּאָדָם דִּבְּרִיאָה דְאִיהוּ קַדְמוֹן לְכָל קְדוּמִים), rides upon a lion (רָכִיב בְּאַרְיֵה), turns to the right (סָטָא לִימִינָא), and makes lines (וְעָבִיד שִׁרְטוּטִין), which are the paths and trails of the sea of Orayta (דְּאִינוּן אוֹרְחִין וּשְׁבִילִין דְּיַמָּא דְאוֹרַיְיתָא). About them it is said: “Who makes a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters” (Isaiah 43) Adam of Yetzirah rides upon an ox (אָדָם דִּיצִירָה רָכִיב בְּשׁוֹר), turns to the left (וְסָטָא לִשְׂמָאלָא), and takes fire in his mouth (וְנָטִיל אֶשָּׁא בְּפִימֵיהּ), and forms images (וְצִיֵּיר צִיּוּרִין). Adam of Asiyah rides upon an eagle (אָדָם דַּעֲשִׂיָּה רָכִיב בְּנֶשֶׁר), and takes wind in his mouth (וְנָטִיל רוּחָא בְּפוּמוֹי), and turns to the east in his face (וְסָטָא לְמִזְרָח בְּאַנְפּוֹי), and makes colors in the eyes of the face (וְעָבַד גַּוָּונִין בְּעַיְינִין בְּאַנְפִּין).

He said to him: Who is Adam of Beri’ah, Yetzirah, and Asiyah here He said to him: My son, this is what is said: “And man has no advantage” (Ecclesiastes 3) (אָמַר לֵיהּ בְּרִי הַאי אִיהוּ דְאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ וְאָדָם אַיִן), and “The advantage of man over beast is nothing” (Ecclesiastes 3) (וּמוֹתַר הָאָדָם מִן הַבְּהֵמָה אָיִן). This is Adam of Beri’ah (וְאִיהוּ אָדָם דִּבְּרִיאָה), for in this the Cause of causes created all creatures (דִבְהַאי בָּרָא עִלַּת הָעִלּוֹת כָּל בִּרְיָין). Adam of Yetzirah is Chokhmah About him it is said: “And Chokhmah, from where shall it be found?” This is Yod from Ein (דְאִיהוּ י׳ מֵאַיִן), in which were formed all the images of the world (דְּבֵיהּ צִיֵּיר כָּל צִיּוּרִין דְּעָלְמָא). In it were formed eyes and nose, nostrils, ears, and mouth (בֵּיהּ צִיֵּיר עַיְינִין וְחוֹטָמָא נוּקְבִין דְּחוֹטָמָא נוּקְבִין דְּאוּדְנִין וּפִימָא), all the points and images which are a crown to the letter Yod (כָּל נְקוּדִין וְצִיּוּרִין דְּאִינוּן עִזְקָא לְאוֹת י׳). And she is in them like a stone at the head of a crown Adam of Asiyah is Nun from Ein, Binah She is the mother of all life (אִיהִי אֵם כָּל חָי), Ma’aseh Bereshit (מַעֲשֵׂה בְרֵאשִׁית). In her were made all the works of the work of Bereshit (בָּהּ אִתְעֲבִידוּ כָּל עוֹבָדִין דְּעוֹבָדָא דִבְּרֵאשִׁית), and colors (וְגַוָּונִין).

The lion, in which lines are made, this is Chesed, the right The ox, in which images are formed, this is Gevurah The eagle in the middle, in which all colors are seen (נֶשֶׁר בְּאֶמְצָעִיתָא, דְבָהּ אִשְׁתְּמוֹדְעוּ כָּל גַּוָּונִין), this is Tiferet, the beauty of all (וְדָא תִּפְאֶרֶת, שַׁפִּירוּ דְכֹלָּא), in which all colors shine (דְכָל גַּוָּונִין נָהֲרִין בֵּיהּ). And Netzach, Hod, Yesod are in correspondence to the three Patriarchs

All lines, images, and works (כָּל שִׁרְטוּטִין וְצִיּוּרִין וְעוֹבָדִין), are seen in the lower Shekhinta (אִינוּן אִתְחַזְיָין בִּשְׁכִינְתָּא תַּתָּאָה), who is the likeness of man (דְּאִיהִי דְמוּת אָדָם). And about her it is said: “And by the hand of the prophets I gave likenesses” (Hosea 12) All is seen in her below And no man can know or gaze upon the lines, images, and colors above except in her And because of her it is said: “And you shall see My back, but My face shall not be seen” (Exodus 33) For no creature is able to gaze there (דְלֵית בִּרְיָה דִיְכִילָא לְאִסְתַּכָּלָא תַּמָּן), in the strength of the brightness and the light of the colors (בִּתְקִיפוּ דְצִחְצוּחִים, וּנְהוֹרָא דְגַוָּונִין). About them it is said: “For man shall not see Me and live” (Exodus 20) And if they were not able to gaze upon the face of Moshe (וְכִי בְאַנְפּוֹי דְּמֹשֶׁה לָא הֲווֹ יָכְלִין לְאִסְתַּכְּלָא), how much more in the central column (כָּל שֶׁכֵּן בְּעַמּוּדָא דְאֶמְצָעִיתָא), which includes all lines, images, and colors (דְאִיהוּ כְלִיל כָּל שִׁרְטוּטִין וְצִיּוּרִין וְגַוָּונִין), and in it all shine (וּבֵיהּ נָהֲרִין כֻּלְּהוּ), and it is included in all (וְאִיהוּ כְּלִיל בְּכֻלְּהוּ). And because of this, it is called Shin (וּבְגִין דָּא אִתְקְרֵי ש), including three branches which are the three Patriarchs (כְּלִיל תְּלַת עַנְפִין דְּאִינוּן תְּלַת אֲבָהָן). And this is the secret of: “And I shall lie with my fathers” (Bereshit 47) And because of this, Malkhut is the unique daughter (וּבְגִין דָּא מַלְכוּת אִיהִי בַּ״ת יְחִידָה), Shabbat (שַׁבָּ״ת), in which all colors, lines, and images are revealed to mankind (דְּבָהּ אִתְגַּלְיָין כָּל גַּוָּונִין וְשִׁרְטוּטִין וְצִיּוּרִין לִבְנֵי נָשָׁא). And in her they are able to know all that is above, and not in another place (וּבָהּ יָכְלִין לְמִנְדַּע כָּל מַה דִּלְעִילָא, וְלָא בַאֲתַר אָחֳרָא), for she is like a mirror (דְּאִיהִי כְּגַוְונָא דְאַסְפַּקְלַרְיָאָ), in which are made known the countenances of the face (דְּאִשְׁתְּמוֹדָע בָּהּ פַּרְצוּפִין דְּאַנְפִּין).

The lines of the hands are the Tree of Life (שִׁרְטוּטִין דִיְדִין אִינוּן אִילָנָא דְחַיֵּי), when they are open to do good (כַּד אִינוּן פְּתִיחָן לְמֶעֱבַד טִיבוּ), like a rose that is open to receive and to send forth a good fragrance (כְּשׁוֹשַׁנָּה דְאִיהִי פְּתִיחָא לְקַבָּלָא, וּלְאַרָקָא רֵיחָא טָבָא). And there are good deeds that are fruits for the Tree (וְאִית עוֹבָדִין טָבִין דְּאִינוּן אִיבָּא לְאִילָנָא), such as Tzedakah (כְּגוֹן צְדָקָה). And how many commandments that depend on the hands to do good with them Hands in which no lines are seen (יְדִין דְּלָא אִתְחַזְיָין בְּהוֹן שִׁרְטוּטִין) are not the likeness from the Tree of Life (לַאו אִיהוּ דִיּוֹקְנָא מֵאִילָנָא דְחַיֵּי). And there are lines in a straight path from the side of the good inclination (וְאִית שִׁרְטוּטִין בְּאֹרַח מֵישַׁר מִסִּטְרָא דְיִצְרָא טָבָא), and others from the side of the evil inclination (וְאָחֳרָנִין מִסִּטְרָא דְיִצְרָא בִישָׁא). These are open for good (דְּאִלֵּין פְּתִיחִין לְטִיבוּ), and these are open for evil (וְאִלֵּין פְּתִיחִין לְבִישׁ). And there are some that are combined, these with those (וְאִית דְּמוּרְכָּבִין אִלֵּין בְּאִלֵּין), a tree of good with evil and evil with good (אִילָנָא דְטוֹב עִם רָע, וְרָע עִם טוֹב). These are they whose hands sometimes do good and sometimes do evil

Hands that do good all their days (יְדַיִן דְּעָבְדִין טִיבוּ כָּל יוֹמוֹי), these are from the Tree of Life (אִלֵּין אִינוּן מֵאִילָנָא דְחַיֵּי). And those that do both good and evil, these are from the Tree of Good and Evil And hands that all their days do evil deeds (וִידַיִן דְּכָל יוֹמוֹי עָבְדִין בְּהוֹן עוֹבָדִין בִּישִׁין), this is from the tree about which it is said: “He looked for it to bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes” (Isaiah 5) (דָּא אִיהוּ מֵאִילָנָא דְאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ וַיְקַו לַעֲשׂוֹת עֲנָבִים וַיַּעַשׂ בְּאוּשִׁים). And there is a tree that makes no fruit, and it is barren These are those who have in them no good deeds And because of this the masters of the Mishnah said: “Not study is the essence, but action is the essence” (וּבְגִין דָּא אָמְרוּ מָארֵי מַתְנִיתִין לֹא הַמֶּדְרָשׁ עִקָּר אֶלָּא הַמַּעֲשֶׂה הוּא הָעִקָּר). And because of this the essence of the lines, images, and colors is action
