Daf 1a (דַּף א ע״א)

Introduction to Tikkunei HaZohar

Rabbi Shimon went and fled to the desert of Lod (רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אָזַל לֵיהּ וְעָרַק לְמַדְבְּרָא דְלוּד), and was hidden in one cave, he and Rabbi El'azar his son (וְאִתְגְּנִיז בְּחַד מְעַרְתָּא הוּא וְרַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר בְּרֵיהּ). A miracle occurred: a carob tree and a spring of water came forth for them They ate from that carob and drank from that water And Eliyahu, remembered for good, came to them every day, twice daily, and taught them And no man knew of them… As it is written in the Zohar Ḥadash, Parashat Tavo And this is called Tikkunei HaZohar (וְדָא אִתְקְרֵי תִּקּוּנֵי הַזֹּהַר), which are the seventy faces of the Orayta that Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai explained upon the word “Bereshit,” from the secrets of the Orayta (דְּאִינוּן שַׁבְעִין אַנְפִּין לְאוֹרַיְיתָא דְפַרִישׁ רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בַּר יוֹחָאִי בְּמִלַּת בְּרֵאשִׁית מִסִּתְרֵי אוֹרַיְיתָא).

Arise Rabbi Shimon, open words before the Shekhinta He opened and said (פָּתַח וְאָמַר): “And the wise shall shine like the radiance of the firmament” (Daniel 12:3) (וְהַמַּשְׂכִּילִים יַזְהִירוּ כְּזֹהַר הָרָקִיעַ וְגוֹמֵר). And “the wise” are Rabbi Shimon and his companions They shine when they gather to compose this work

Permission was given to them, and Eliyahu with them, and all the souls of the academies to descend among them, and all the angels in hiddenness and in the way of wisdom And the cause above all causes gave permission (וְעִלַּת עַל כֹּלָּא יְהִיב רְשׁוּ), to all the holy names and all the existences and all the appellations, to reveal to them hidden secrets, each name in its degree (לְכָל שְׁמָהָן קַדִּישִׁין וּלְכָל הֲוַיָּין וּלְכָל כִּנּוּיִין לְגַלָּאָה לוֹן רָזִין טְמִירִין כָּל שֵׁם בְּדַרְגָּא דִילֵיהּ). And permission was given to the Ten Sefirot to reveal hidden secrets, which were not permitted to be revealed until the generation of King Mashiach

Like the Zohar of the firmament, which includes every color (כְּזֹהַר הָרָקִיעַ דְּאִיהוּ כְּלִיל כָּל גַּוָון): a hidden and concealed radiance (זֹהַר טָמִיר וְגָנִיז), a shining radiance in the heavens (זֹהַר בָּהִיר בַּשְּׁחָקִים), a radiance that shoots sparks and gleams like lightning to the eyes (זֹהַר זָרִיק נִצּוֹצִין וּמַבְהִיק כַּבָּרָק לְעַיְינִין), a white shining radiance like the moon (זֹהַר זָהִיר חִוָּור כְּסִיהֲרָא), a red shining radiance like Mars (זֹהַר זָהִיר סוּמָקָא כְּמַאֲדִים), a gleaming radiance, encompassing green, like the sun (זֹהַר מַבְהִיק כְּלִיל יְרוֹקָא כַּחַמָּה), a green radiance like the stars (זֹהַר יָרוֹק כַּכֹּכָב), a radiance combining white and red (זֹהַר כְּלִיל חִוָּור וְסוּמָק), a radiance shining to every limb (זֹהַר זָהִיר לְכָל עִיבַר), like one who strikes with a hammer and shoots sparks to every direction (כְּמָאן דְּמָחָא בַּפַּטִּישׁ וְזָרִיק שְׁבִיבִין לְכָל סִטְרָא). So from this radiance shine many souls, all of them shining in the firmament

Some say: it was taught (נוסחא אחרינא תָּאנָא): “And the wise shall shine like the radiance of the firmament” (וְהַמַּשְׂכִּילִים יַזְהִירוּ כְּזֹהַר הָרָקִיעַ)-this is the concealed and hidden radiance, this is Keter (דְּאִיהוּ זֹהַר טָמִיר וְגָנִיז דָּא כֶּתֶ״ר). “A shining radiance in the heavens”-this is Chokhmah “A radiance that shoots sparks and gleams like lightning to the eyes”-this is Binah “A white radiance like the moon”-this is Chesed, also called Gedulah “A red shining radiance like Mars”-this is Gevurah “A gleaming radiance, encompassing green, like the sun”-this is Tiferet “A green radiance like a star”-this is Netzach “A radiance combining black and red”-this is Hod

“A radiance shining to every limb, like one who strikes with a hammer and scatters sparks to every side”-this is Yesod And these are the Neshamot from among those wise ones [the Maskilim] (וְאִלֵּין אִינוּן נִשְׁמָתִין מֵאִלֵּין מַשְׂכִּילִים), in whom there is sekel to comprehend the secrets of their Master (דְּאִית בְּהוֹן שֵׂכֶל לְאִשְׁתְּמוֹדְעָא בְּרָזִין דְּמָארֵיהוֹן); all of them are inscribed and formed in the Malkhut of the firmament (כֻּלְּהוּ רְשִׁימִין וּמְצוּיָירִין בְּמַלְכוּתָא דִרְקִיעָא), like stars that shine in the firmament (כְּכוֹכְבַיָּא דְנָהֲרִין בִּרְקִיעָא); and this is what is meant by: “they shall shine like the Zohar of the firmament” (וְהַיְינוּ יַזְהִירוּ כְּזֹהַר הָרָקִיעַ). What is the firmament? (מַאי הָרָקִיעַ)-that within it shine the Neshamot of the wise (דְּנָהֲרִין בֵּיהּ נִשְׁמָתִין דְּמַשְׂכִּילִים), like stars in the firmament (כְּכֹכְבַיָּא בָּרָקִיעַ), so do they shine in the Throne (הָכִי נָהֲרִין בְּכָרְסַיָּא). And all of them soar from the firmament (וְכֻלְּהוּ פָרְחִין מִן רָקִיעַ), and this is the Tzaddik who lives forever (וְדָא צַדִּיק חַי עוֹלָמִים), from whom go forth the Neshamot of the Righteous (דְּמִנֵּיהּ פָּרְחִין נִשְׁמָתִין דְּצַדִּיקַיָּא), and they shine in the Moon (וְנָהֲרִין בְּסִיהֲרָא). And upon them it is written (וַעֲלַיְיהוּ כְתִיב): “And Elohim placed them in the firmament of the heavens to shine upon the earth” (Bereshit 1) (וַיִּתֵּן אֹתָם אֱלֹהִי״ם בִּרְקִיעַ הַשָּׁמָיִם לְהָאִיר עַל הָאָרֶץ).
