At that time, when that evil serpent was removed from the sea (בְּהַהוּא זִמְנָא דְאִתְעֲבַר הַהוּא חִוְיָא בִּישָׁא מִן יַמָּא), the holy serpent ruled (שַׁלִּיט חִוְיָא קַדִּישָׁא). And at that time-“there is creeping thing innumerable, small animals with great” (וּבְהַהוּא זִמְנָא [שם רֶמֶשׂ וְאֵין מִסְפָּר חַיּוֹת קְטַנּוֹת עִם גְּדוֹלוֹת]) (Psalms 104). Ships go in trust upon the sea and do not drown (אָזְלִין אֳנִיּוֹת בְּהַבְטָחָה בְיַמָּא דְלָא טָבְעִין), for the storm-wind had its dominion removed from the sea of the Orayta (דְּהָא רוּחַ סְעָרָה אִתְעֲבַר שָׁלְטָנוּתֵיהּ מִן יַמָּא דְאוֹרַיְיתָא).

And at that time: “There is creeping thing innumerable…”; “There go the ships; Leviathan-this You formed to sport in it” (וּבְהַהוּא זִמְנָא שָׁם רֶמֶשׂ וְאֵין מִסְפָּר וְגוֹ׳, שָׁם אֳנִיּוֹת יְהַלֵּכוּן לִוְיָתָן זֶה יָצַרְתָּ לְשַׂחֵק בּוֹ) (Psalms 104:25–26). And may he rejoice with them This is what is written: “Set your heart to her bulwarks…” (Psalms 48). It is written le-cholāh-to the sick-longing one (לְחוֹלָה כְּתִיב). “All of them look to You, to give them their food in its time” (וְכֻלָּם אֵלֶיךָ יְשַׂבֵּרוּן לָתֵת אָכְלָם בְּעִתּוֹ) (Psalms 104)-these are the times of the Orayta, as our sages of blessed memory said: “Did you fix times for Torah?” Which is the time of the Tzaddik “You give to them, they gather it” (תִּתֵּן לָהֶם יִלְקוֹטוּן) (Psalms 104:28)-this is the manna (דָּא מַנָּא), of which it is said: “Six days shall you gather it…” (Exodus 16:26), from the side of the middle pillar, which includes six sides

Leviathan above-this is the Tzaddik, who is as a small fish upon the shore of the sea (לִוְיָתָן לְעִילָא דָּא צַדִּיק דְּאִיהוּ כְּדָג קָטָן עַל כֵּיף יַמָּא), the fleeing serpent (נָחָשׁ בָּרִיחַ)-this is that of which it is said: “The middle bar within the boards” (דָּא הַהוּא דְאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ הַבְּרִיחַ הַתִּיכוֹן בְּתוֹךְ הַקְּרָשִׁים) (Exodus 26:28), and this is the middle pillar that is called tikhon-middle (וְדָא עַמּוּדָא דְאֶמְצָעִיתָא דְּאִתְקְרֵי תִּיכוֹן), because it is the middle pillar (בְּגִין דְּאִיהוּ עַמּוּדָא דְאֶמְצָעִיתָא): two wings-right and left (תְּרֵין גַּדְפוֹי יְמִינָא וּשְׂמָאלָא), from there the Orayta is given (דְּמִתַּמָּן אוֹרַיְיתָא אִתְיְהִיבַת); two scales-two supports of truth (תְּרֵין קַשְׂקַשּׂוֹי תְּרֵין סַמְכֵי קְשׁוֹט). The supernal Shekhinta is the sea (שְׁכִינְתָּא עִלָּאָה אִיהִי יַמָּא); the lower Shekhinta is “the way of a ship in the heart of the sea” (שְׁכִינְתָּא תַּתָּאָה אִיהִי דֶּרֶךְ אֳנִיָּה בְּלֵב יָם) (Proverbs 30:19)-which is the thirty-two Elohim of the work of Bereshit “There is creeping thing innumerable” (שָׁם רֶמֶשׂ וְאֵין מִסְפָּר), as you say: “And maidens without number…” (Song of Songs 6). And these are decisive halakhot (וְאִינוּן הֲלָכוֹת פְּסוּקוֹת), which are “virgins, her companions, following her”-of the Shekhinta (דְּאִינוּן בְּתוּלוֹת אַחֲרֶיהָ רֵעוֹתֶיהָ דִּשְׁכִינְתָּא) (Psalms 45:15). “Small living creatures”-these are the letters of Adonai (חַיּוֹת קְטַנּוֹת אִלֵּין אַתְוָון דַּאדֹנָ״י); “with great”-these are the letters of YHVH (עִם גְּדוֹלוֹת אִינוּן אַתְוָון דְּיְהוָ״ה), which are the chariots of Kudsha Berikh Hu and His Shekhinta (דְּאִינוּן מֶרְכָּבוֹת דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא וּשְׁכִינְתֵּיהּ). All the companions came to kiss him (אָתוּ כֻּלְּהוּ חַבְרַיָּא לְנַשְׁקָא לֵיהּ); he flew, and they did not see him nor anything (פָּרַח וְלָא חָזוּ לֵיהּ וְלָא מִידֵי).

Rabbi El'azar opened and said: Father, behold, the seven seas they are, and the supernal sea is over them all Of them it is said: “For the abundance of seas they shall suck” (וַעֲלַיְיהוּ אִתְּמַר כִּי שֶׁפַע יַמִּים יִנָּקוּ) (Deuteronomy 33). From whom do they suck? He said to him: My son, seven by seven they are poured And thus there are seven firmaments by seven (וְהָכִי אִינוּן רְקִיעִים שִׁבְעָה בְּשִׁבְעָה), and thus seven mountains by seven (וְהָכִי אִינוּן טוּרִין שִׁבְעָה בְּשִׁבְעָה), and thus seven lands by seven (וְהָכִי אִינוּן אַרְעִין שִׁבְעָה בְּשִׁבְעָה), seven settlements by seven (יִשּׁוּבִין שִׁבְעָה בְּשִׁבְעָה). And their heads are two And the secret of the matter: “two by two, seven by seven” (וְרָזָא דְמִלָּה שְׁנַיִם שְׁנַיִם שִׁבְעָה שִׁבְעָה) (Bereshit 7). And all of them, male and female And above-one is hidden and concealed And thus there are seven thrones by seven (וְהָכִי אִינוּן שֶׁבַע כָּרְסְיָין שִׁבְעָה בְּשִׁבְעָה), seven palaces by seven (שֶׁבַע הֵיכָלִין שִׁבְעָה בְּשִׁבְעָה). And thus are they appointed: seven and seven

Leviathan of the sea-this is the Tzaddik (לִוְיָתָן דְּיַמָּא דָא צַדִּיק), the head of which is the middle pillar (רֵישָׁא דְאִיהוּ עַמּוּדָא דְאֶמְצָעִיתָא). It reaches to the seventh sea, which is the head of all of them And his two wings and two scales-by four seas are their measures The measure of the serpent’s tail reaches to the last seventh sea (שִׁעוּר דִּזְנָבָא דְחִוְיָא מָטֵי עַד יַמָּא שְׁבִיעָאָה בַּתְרָאָה), which is inclusive of seven seas (דְאִיהוּ כְּלִילָא שֶׁבַע יַמִּים), of which it is said: “Seven times a day I praised You” (דַּעֲלֵיהּ אִתְּמַר שֶׁבַע בַּיּוֹם הִלַּלְתִּיךָ) (Psalms 119).

Rabbi Shimon said: My son, behold the masters of shields are descending from Above (אָמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, בְּרִי, הָא מָארֵי תְרִיסִין קָא נָחֲתִין מִלְּעִילָא), clothed in coats of mail (מְלוּבָּשִׁין שִׁרְיָין); their bows are bows of fire (קַשְׁתּוֹתֵיהוֹן קַשְׁתֵּי אֵשׁ), their spears-fire (וְרוּמְחֵיהוֹן אֶשָּׁא), and their swords-flame (וְסַיְיפֵיהוֹן לֶהָבָה). All of them are masters of eyes Surely, these are the masters of shields in the Beit Midrash (בְּוַדַּאי הָא מָארֵי תְרִיסִין בְּבֵי מֶדְרָשָׁא), and these in them shall be aroused to wage war Above (וְאִלֵּין בְּהוֹן יִתְעָרוּן לְאַגָחָא קְרָבָא לְעִילָא). And not only this, but behold the great Fish is coming-Rav Hamnuna Sava (וְלָא עוֹד אֶלָּא דְהָא נוּנָא רַבְרְבָא קָא אַתְיָא, רַב הַמְנוּנָא סָבָא), surely with many mighty holy fishes-Talmidei Chakhamim (Torah scholars) that multiply in the sea (וַדַּאי בְּכַמָּה נוּנִין חֲיָילִין קַדִּישִׁין דְּתַלְמִידֵי חֲכָמִים, דְּמִתְרַבִּין בְּיַמָּא). Now it is necessary to spread for them a net, to be in our domain (כְעַן צָרִיךְ לְפָרְשָׁא לוֹן רֶשֶׁת, לְמִיהְוִי בִרְשׁוּת דִּילָן), and for the masters of shields-battle gear (וּלְמָארֵי תְּרִיסִין מָאנֵי קְרָבָא).

Now, it is necessary to prepare [the slingshot] with the stones of the sling (כְעַן צָרִיךְ לְאַתְקָנָא בְקִירְטָא בְּאַבְנִין דְּקִירְטָא), with the bow-arrows of the bow (בְּקַשְׁתָּא בְגִירִין דְּקַשְׁתָּא), with spear, with sword (בְּרוּמְחָא, בְּסַיְיפָא): “Take hold of shield and buckler” (הַחֲזֵק מָגֵן וְצִנָּה) (Psalms 35). For there are masters of shields who charge on their horses (דְּאִית מָארֵי תְּרִיסִין דְּאִינוּן מַגִּיחִין בְּסוּסְוָון), and there are others who are on foot (וְאִית אָחֳרָנִין דְּאִינוּן רַגְלִין), of whom it is said at the going forth from the exile of Egypt: “About six hundred thousand on foot…”

Rabbi Shimon rose, opened and said: “Hear, O mountains, the contention of Hashem” (קָם רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן פָּתַח וְאָמַר, שִׁמְעוּ הָרִים אֶת רִיב יְהוָ״ה) (Micah 6). What is Riv (contention)? This is the Shekhinta (מָאן רִיב, דָּא שְׁכִינְתָּא), for She is the contention of Hashem (דְאִיהִי רִיב יְהוָ״ה). For She is “my great master,” for because of Her children She is contention in “Rabbi and Rabban and Rava” (אִיהִי רִיב בְּרַבִּי וְרַבָּן וְרַבָּא), contention indeed in all Tannaim and Amoraim (רִיב וַדַּאי בְּכֻלְּהוּ תַּנָּאִים וְאֱמוֹרָאִים). For She contends in them in the six orders of Mishnah (דְּאִיהִי מְרִיבַת בְּהוֹן בְּשִׁית סִדְרֵי מִשְׁנָה), for Her Husband, who is the middle pillar, inclusive of the six orders (בְּגִין בַּעֲלָהּ דְּאִיהוּ עַמּוּדָא דְאֶמְצָעִיתָא, כְּלִיל שִׁית סִדְרִין). And of them it is said: “Or let him take hold of My stronghold; he shall make peace with Me-peace he shall make with Me” (וַעֲלַיְיהוּ אִתְּמַר אוֹ יַחֲזֵק בְּמָעוּזִי, יַעֲשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם לִי, שָׁלוֹם יַעֲשֶׂה לִּי) (Isaiah 27). Two peaces (תְּרֵי שְׁלָמֵי): one in the middle pillar (חַד בְּעַמּוּדָא דְאֶמְצָעִיתָא), and one in the Tzaddik (וְחַד בְּצַדִּיק). Of whom it is said: “Peace, peace to the far and to the near” (דַּעֲלַיְיהוּ אִתְּמַר שָׁלוֹם שָׁלוֹם לָרָחוֹק וְלַקָּרוֹב) (Isaiah 57). For in exile it is said in the middle pillar: “From afar Hashem appeared to me” (דִּבְגָלוּתָא אִתְּמַר בְּעַמּוּדָא דְאֶמָצָעִיתָא מֵרָחוֹק יְהוָ״ה נִרְאָה לִי) (Jeremiah 31). The Tzaddik is near to Her And concerning him it is said: “Better is a neighbor that is near than a brother far off” (וּבְגִינֵיהּ אִתְּמַר טוֹב שָׁכֵן קָרוֹב מֵאָח רָחוֹק) (Proverbs 27).
