Daf 4a (דַּף ד ע״א)

For the Cause above all (וְעִלַּת עַל כֹּלָּא), He shines in the ten Sefirot of Atzilut (הוּא נָהִיר בְּעִשֶׂר סְפִירוֹת דַּאֲצִילוּת), some say: He descends (נ״א נחית), and in the ten Sefirot of Beri’ah (וּבְעִשֶׂר סְפִירוֹת דִּבְּרִיאָה), and He shines in the ten orders of angels (וְנָהִיר בְּעִשֶׂר כִּתּוֹת דְּמַלְאָכַיָּא), and in the ten spheres of the firmament (וּבְעִשֶׂר גַּלְגַּלֵּי דִרְקִיעָא), and He is not changed in any place (וְלָא אִשְׁתַּנִּי בְכָל אֲתַר).Letter or vowel-point form preserved from the manuscript

Arise, Ezekiel the prophet (קוּם יְחֶזְקֵאל נְבִיאָה), to reveal these visions before the Shekhinta (לְגַלָּאָה אִלֵּין מַרְאוֹת קַמֵּי שְׁכִינְתָּא), of which it is said: “And the likeness of the living beings, their appearance was like burning coals of fire” (דְּאִתְּמַר בְּהוֹן וּדְמוּת הַחַיּוֹת מַרְאֵיהֶם כְּגַחֲלֵי אֵשׁ) (Ezekiel 1:13). These are the nekudot of Orayta and the ta‘amei of Orayta

Concerning the letters it is said: “And the likeness of the living beings” (דַעֲלַיְיהוּ דְאַתְוָון אִתְּמַר וּדְמוּת הַחַיּוֹת) (Ezekiel 1:13). “Their appearance was like burning coals of fire” these are the nekudot “Burning like the appearance of torches” these are the ta‘amei And of them it is said: “And the wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament” (וּבְהוֹן וְהַמַּשְׂכִּילִים יַזְהִירוּ כְּזֹהַר הָרָקִיעַ) (Daniel 12:3). The wise are the letters “They shall shine” these are the nekudot that shine within them “Like the brightness” these are the ta‘amei And the Shekhinta is inclusive of all Concerning her it is said: “She walked among the living beings” (עֲלָהּ אִתְּמַר הִיא מִתְהַלֶּכֶת בֵּין הַחַיּוֹת) (Ezekiel 1:13). These are the supernal living beings of the nekudot of the ta‘amei (דְּאִינוּן חֵיוָן עִלָּאִין דִּנְקוּדֵי דְּטַעֲמֵי), and the lower living beings of the nekudot of the letters (וְחֵיוָון תַּתָּאִין דִּנְקוּדֵי דְאַתְוָון), in the likeness (כְּגַוְונָא דָא הֶֹ). Letter or vowel-point form preserved from the manuscript

And they are the segolta above, the three supernal living beings (וְאִנּוּן סֶגּוֹלְתָּ״א לְעִילָא תְּלַת חֵיוָון עִילָאֵין), which hint Yod Yod Yod in the initial letters of Hashem Hashem Hashem (דִרְמִיזִין י׳ י׳ י׳ בְּרָאשֵׁי תֵּיבוֹת יהו״ה יהו״ה יהו״ה). And they are Hashem is King, Hashem was King, Hashem will be King The faces of the three supernal living beings are Chesed Gevurah Tiferet And below is the segol, which are the lower living beings, the faces of Netzach Yesod and Hod These are hinted in “May Hashem bless you, may Hashem shine, may Hashem lift up” (דִרְמִיזִין בִּיבָרֶכְ״ךָ יהו״ה יָאֵ״ר יהו״ה יִשָּׂ״א יהו״ה) (Numbers 6).

The central point is Chayah, whose name is Adam (נְקוּדָה דְאֶמְצָעִיתָא חַיָּה שֶׁשְּׁמָהּ אָדָם), in the likeness of this Hei (כְּגַוְונָא דָא הּ). She walks among the living beings, which are three above and three below (הִיא מִתְהַלֶּכֶת בֵּין הַחַיּוֹת דְּאִינוּן תְּלַת לְעִילָא וּתְלַת לְתַתָּא), in the likeness of this Hei (כְּגַוְונָא דָא הֶֹ). She is the fourth to every three, and the seventh to six And the secret of the three lower Chayot [living beings]—concerning them, he hints: “And it came to pass in the thirtieth year” (וְרָזָא דִתְלַת חֵיוָון תַּתָּאִין עֲלַיְיהוּ אִיהוּ קָא רְמִיז וַיְהִי בִּשְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה) (Ezekiel 1:1).

And concerning the central point, he hints in the fourth, which is the four faces of Adam Supernal Chokhmah [Wisdom] is Ko’aḥ M”H [Power of M”H] (חָכְמָה עִלָּאָה כֹּ״חַ מָ״ה), concerning which it is said (דְּאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ): “And the likeness, as the appearance of a man, was upon it above” (דְּמוּת כְּמַרְאֵה אָדָם עָלָיו מִלְמָעִילָה) (Ezekiel 1:26). And all is in the secret of the vowel points of the letter Hei

On the fifth of the month (בַּחֲמִשָּׁה לַחֹדֶשׁ), this is the letter Hei (דָּא אָת ה׳), which is Elohim (דְּאִיהִי אֱלֹהִי״ם), an epithet for the Name of Hashem (כִּנוּ״י לְשֵׁם יהו״ה), and She is the Throne (וְאִיהִי כָּרְסַיָּא). Thus the Throne ascends according to the number of Elohim And She is the supernal Keter (וְאִיהִי כֶּתֶר עִלְיוֹן), the fifth to the four supernal living beings (חֲמִישָׁאָה לְאַרְבַּע חֵיוָון עִלָּאִין), and the fifth to the four lower ones (וַחֲמִישָׁאָה לְאַרְבַּע תַּתָּאִין). And She is the Throne for the Master of all (וְאִיהִי כָּרְסַיָּא לְמָארֵי כֹּלָּא), the Lord over all (אָדוֹן עַל כֹּלָּא), who is hidden and concealed (דְאִיהוּ טָמִיר וְגָנִיז). And if you should say that this vision which Ezekiel saw (וְאִי תֵימָא דְרָזָא דָא חָזָא יְחֶזְקֵאל), it was nothing but the likeness of these living beings (לָא הֲוָה אֶלָּא דְמוּת דְּאִלֵּין חֵיוָון), and not that he saw the living beings themselves (וְלָא דְחָזָא חֵיוָון), but like a king who sends a letter with his seal (אֶלָּא כְּמַלְכָּא דְשָׁלַח שְׁטָר בְּחוֹתָמֵיהּ), and the image of the king is imprinted upon the wax from his seal (וְדִיּוֹקְנָא דְמַלְכָּא רְשִׁימָא עַל שַׁעֲוָה מֵחוֹתָמֵיהּ).

For in the Sefirot of Atzilut, it is the very likeness of the King Himself And in the Sefirot of Beri’ah, it is the seal of the King And in the Sefirot of Yetzirah, and in the angels which are the living beings, it is the impression of the seal in wax And therefore it is said in the visions of Ezekiel (וּבְגִין דָּא אִתְּמַר בְּמַרְאוֹת יְחֶזְקֵאל): “As the appearance of a man” and “the likeness of the living beings” (דְּמוּת כְּמַרְאֵה אָדָם, וּדְמוּת הַחַיּוֹת) (Ezekiel 1) and not the living beings themselves It is like one who all his days has not seen the King, and was a villager He asks about Him, and they sketch for him on a tablet or on paper the likeness of Him And there is a point upon which all the worlds depend (וְאִית נְקוּדָה דְכָל עָלְמָא תַּלְיָא תְּחוֹתָהּ), like the sun with regard to the lower beings (כְּגוֹן שִׁמְשָׁא לְגַבֵּי תַּתָּאִין). It appears to mankind beneath the firmament like the vowel kamatz Yet it is many times greater than all the earth How much more so the nekudot of Orayta, in comparison with their height And they appear to us as nekudot (Until here) (עַד כָּאן).

“And I was among the exiles by the river Kevar” (וַאֲנִי בְתוֹךְ הַגּוֹלָה עַל נְהַר כְּבָר) (Ezekiel 1:1). This is the River Dinur which flows and goes out from before Him A thousand thousands serve Him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stand before Him The judgment was set and the books were opened These are the three books that are opened on Rosh haShanah And in it souls are immersed in this River Dinur, from the defilement with which they were defiled in the lowly world And this is Metatron, in the image of the Tzaddik, the Foundation of the world He is the River Dinur from the side of Gevurah The river of His streams is from the side of Chesed, the streams of water And this is “by the river Kevar” (וְהַאי אִיהוּ עַל נְהַר כְּבָר).

What is Kevar? This is Metatron (מַאי כְּבָר, דָּא מטטרו״ן), the chariot for the middle pillar (רֶכֶ״ב לְעַמּוּדָא דְאֶמְצָעִיתָא). “And He rode upon a cherub and flew” (וַיִּרְכַּב עַל כְּרוּב וַיָּעֹף) (Psalms 18:11). And He is a chariot of fire and horses of fire (וְאִיהוּ רֶכֶב אֵשׁ וְסוּסֵי אֵשׁ) (II Kings 2:11), inclusive of six hundred thousand chariots (כְּלִיל שִׁתִּין רִבּוֹא מֶרְכָּבוֹת). And from the side of the Tzaddik, the Life of the worlds, He is inclusive of eighteen myriads of chariots p1-0(וּמִסִּטְרָא דְצַדִּיק חַי עָלְמִין הוּא כְּלִיל י״ח רִבּוֹא מֶרְכָּבוֹת). And this is “the chariots of Elohim are myriads, thousands upon thousands” (וְהַיְינוּ רֶכֶב אֱלֹהִי״ם רִבּוֹתַיִם אַלְפֵי שִׁנְאָן) (Psalms 68:18).

And the masters of the Mishnah established it, two thousand that are not from two ten-thousands For every myriad is ten thousand Twenty myriads are two hundred thousand Two that are not from them leave eighteen myriads These descend with Metatron to receive the eighteen blessings of the prayers of Yisrael (דְנָחֲתִין עִם מטטרו״ן לְקַבְּלָא י״ח בִּרְכָאָן דִּצְלוֹתִין דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל), to raise them before Kudsha Berikh Hu, the Life of the worlds (לְסַלְקָא לוֹן קַמֵּי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא חַ״י עָלְמִין), the Tzaddik, the Foundation of the world (צַדִּיק יְסוֹד עוֹלָם), and “blessings are upon the head of the Tzaddik” (וּבְרָכוֹת לְרֹאשׁ צַדִּיק). “And I was among the exiles” this is the Shekhinta “The heavens were opened” (נִפְתְּחוּ הַשָּׁמַיִם), the five firmaments of the second day (ה׳ רְקִיעִי דְיוֹמָא תִּנְיָנָא), the five heavens (ה׳ דְהַשָּׁמַיִם), in which are inscribed the living beings, whose source is Yod Hei Vav Hei (דְּבָהּ רְשִׁימִין חֵיוָון, דִּמְקוֹרֵיהוֹן יו״ד ה״י וא״ו ה״י) some say: Yod Hei Vav Hei (נ״א יוד ה״א וא״ו ה״א), Hashem (יהו״ה). “And I saw visions of Elohim” (וָאֶרְאֶה מַרְאוֹת אֱלֹהִי״ם) (Ezekiel 1:1), five lights of the first day (חָמֵשׁ אוֹר דְּיוֹמָא קַדְמָאָה), corresponding to the first Hei (לָקֳבֵל ה׳ קַדְמָאָה). Inclusive of five lights, which are [Kamatz, Tzere, Holam, Hiriq, Kubutz] (כְּלִילָא מֵחָמֵשׁ אוֹר דְּאִיהוּ אָאֵאֹאִאֻ), engravings of the holy seal for Hashem (פִּתּוּחֵי חוֹתָם קֹדֶשׁ לַיהו״ה) (Exodus 28:36). And each one shows Ehyeh And these nekudot ascend to Elohim

In them are seven nekudot, three above and three below, with holam in the middle (דִּבְהוֹן שֶׁבַע נְקוּדִין, תְּלַת לְעִילָא תְּלַת לְתַתָּא חֹלֵם בְּאֶמְצָעִיתָא), and one is the eighth firmament for them (וְחַד רְקִיעָא תְּמִינָאָה לוֹן), of which it is said: “And Elohim placed them in the firmament of the heavens” (דְּאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ וַיִּתֵּן אֹתָם אֱלֹהִי״ם בִּרְקִיעַ הַשָּׁמָיִם) (Bereshit 1:17). And the seven sparks of the nekudot [Kamatz, Tzere, Holam, Hiriq, Kubutz] correspond to the seven planets [Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon] (וְשֶׁבַע נִצּוֹצֵי דִנְקוּדֵי אָאֵאֹאִאֻ לָקֳבֵל שֶׁבַע כֹּכְבֵי לֶכֶת). Three on this side and three on that side, and the sun in the middle She is the fourth to every three, and the seventh to six And she is in the form of holam In these five it is said: “And the priest shall take (Ve-kamatz ha-Kohen misham) from it his handful (Melo kumtzo)” (בְּאִלֵּין חָמֵשׁ וְקָמַץ הַכֹּהֵן מִשָּׁם מְלֹא קֻמְצוֹ) (Leviticus 2:2). The kamatz is Yod when it is opened in the five nekudot, it is Heh Five fingers, in which the handful of Yod opens (חָמֵשׁ אֶצְבְּעָאן, דִּבְהוֹן אִתְפַּתַּח קוֹמֶץ דְּאִיהוּ י׳), to fifty gates of freedom (לְחַמְשִׁין תַּרְעִין דְּחֵירוּ).

And the letters Yod-Heh(15) are according to the arrangement of Holam(78), which is the middle (וְאַתְוָון י״ה כְּחֻשְׁבַּן חֹלֵ״ם דְּאִיהוּ אֶמְצָעִי), and hirek(308)p1-1 is according to the arrangement of V-H(11) (וְחִרֵ״ק כְּחֻשְׁבַּן ו״ה). Vav is arm, Heh shoulder Kamatzp1-2 is fourteen joints of the fingers And this is “And he said: For a hand upon the throne of Yah” (Exodus 17:16) And these hint: Hashem Eloheinu Hashem And with the five fingers of the left hand, fourteen joints, hinting “כוז״ו במוכס״ז כוז״ו” (וּבְחָמֵשׁ אֶצְבְּעָאן דְּיַד שְׂמָאלָא י״ד פִּרְקִין, רְמִיזִין כוז״ו במוכס״ז כוז״ו). And these are 28, of which it is said: “And now, may the power of Hashem be great” (Numbers 14:17) And thus ascend “AYH AVH” as 28, hinting “A glorious throne, exalted from the beginning” (Jeremiah 17:12)

Immediately when they departed, “they went without strength before the pursuer” (Lamentations 1:6) And because of this the masters of Mishnah established: whoever says, ‘Amen. May His great Name be blessed,’ with all his strength, they tear up for him the decree of seventy years (וּבְגִין דָא אוּקְמוּהָ מָארֵי מַתְנִיתִין, כָּל הָאוֹמֵר אָמֵן יְהֵא שְׁמֵיהּ רַבָּא בְּכָל כֹּחוֹ, קוֹרְעִין לוֹ גְזַר דִּינוֹ שֶׁל שִׁבְעִים שָׁנָה), which are seventy years, after one thousand and two hundred years from the destruction of the Temple (דְּאִינוּן שַׁבְעִין שְׁנִין, בָּתַר אֶלֶף וּמָאתָן שְׁנִין, דְּאִתְחֲרַב בֵּי מַקְדְּשָׁא). And some count them from the cessation of the Tamid (וְאִית דְּחָשִׁיב לוֹן מִשֶּׁבּוּטַל הַתָּמִיד), because in the degree of Ya’akov depends the end of redemption, whose degree is Emet [Truth], as it is written: “You will give truth to Ya'akov” (Micah 7:20) (בְּגִין דִּבְדַרְגָּא דְיַעֲקֹב תַּלְיָא קֵץ דְּפוּרְקָנָא, דְּדַרְגֵּיהּ אֱמֶת, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב תִּתֵּן אֱמֶ״ת לְיַעֲקֹב). This is the sign 1290 (דְּאִיהוּ סִימָן אֶלֶף מָאתַיִם תִּשְׁעִים). And some add in it 2: “Hashem is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth” (Psalms 145:18), “to make known on earth Your way” (Psalms 67:3) So too “eretz” equals 1290, “to fulfill in them: Truth shall sprout from the earth” (Psalms 85:12) (אוּף הָכִי אֶרֶץ, אֶלֶּף ר״ץ, מָאתַיִם וְתִשְׁעִים, לְקַיְימָא בְהוֹן אֱמֶ״ת מֵאֶרֶ״ץ תִּצְמָח), when they are outside, by the computation of eretz (כַּד יְהוֹן לְבָר כְּחוּשְׁבַּן אֶרֶ״ץ). However their decree is seventy years

Another matter (דָּבָר אַחֵר). “And the wise” are the nekudot “They shall shine” means they shine within the letters For the nekudot are circular, the letters are squared By the letters were created the four living beings of the Throne (דִּבְאַתְוָון אִתְבְּרִיאוּ אַרְבַּע חֵיוָון דְּכָרְסַיָּא), of whom it is said in the matter of Ezekiel: “And the likeness of the living beings, their appearance was like burning coals of fire” (Ezekiel 1:13) (דְאִתְּמַר עֲלַיְיהוּ בְּעִנְיָנָא דִיחֶזְקֵאל, וּדְמוּת הַחַיּוֹת מַרְאֵיהֶם כְּגַחֲלֵי אֵשׁ). These are the nekudot of Orayta, which are nine (אִלֵּין אִינוּן נְקוּדֵי דְאוֹרַיְיתָא, דְּאִינוּן תִּשְׁעָה), and by them were created the nine spheres of the Throne (דִּבְהוֹן אִתְבְּרִיאוּ תִּשְׁעָה גַלְגַּלֵּי דְכָרְסַיָּא). The Throne is the tenth to the nine spheres In them shine the ten letters that are Yod Hei Vav Hei (וְנָהֲרִין בְּהוֹן עִשֶׂר אַתְוָון דְּאִנּוּן יו״ד ה״א וא״ו ה״א), and by them they were created (וּבְהוֹן אִתְבְּרִיאוּ). And the four letters that are Hashem shine in the four living beings, and by them they were created And the Name Hashem is the middle pillar, Emet (וְשֵׁם יהו״ה אִיהוּ עַמּוּדָא דְאֶמְצָעִיתָא, אֱמֶת), and His Shekhinta is Torat Emet (וּשְׁכִינְתֵּיהּ תּוֹרַת אֱמֶת). In her is the creation of the Throne, which is Elohim And this is “Bereshit bara Elohim” (Bereshit 1:1) By the Orayta, which is “Beginning,” He created the Throne which is Elohim Thus the Throne ascends according to the number of Elohim
