Chapter Five (פֶּרֶק חֲמִישִּׁי)
It emerges for us from our discussion (יָצָא לָנוּ מִנְּדוֹן דִּידָן), that the inner light is the soul of the vessels (שֶׁהָאוֹר פְּנִימִי הוּא נְשָׁמָה לַכֵּלִים), and acts within it like the soul within the body (וּפוֹעֵל בּוֹ כְּמוֹ הַנְּשָׁמָה בְּתוֹךְ הַגּוּף), so it is in the holy worlds (כֵּן הוּא בָּעוֹלָמוֹת הַקְּדוֹשִׁים). But in the impure worlds, with a man of worthlessness, it is the opposite (אֲבָל בָּעוֹלָמוֹת הַטְּמֵאִים אֵצֶל אָדָם בְּלִיַּעַל הוּא לְהֵיפֶךְ), his impure vessel has a slight grasp of sparks of purity (הַכְּלִי הַטָּמֵא שֶׁלּוֹ יֵשׁ לוֹ קְצָת אֲחִיזָה בְּנִיצוֹצֵי טָהֳרָה), but it does not expand or unify with the parts of his limbs (אֲבָל אֵינוֹ מִתְפַּשֵּׁט וּמִתְיַחֵד עִם חֶלְקֵי אֵיבָרָיו). As the Zohar says regarding the fall of the statue of Nebuchadnezzar (כְּמוֹ שֶׁאוֹמֵר הַזֹּהַר עַל נְפִילַת אַנְדְּרַטֵּי שֶׁל נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּר), that they placed in it the golden tzitz on which the explicit Name was engraved (שֶׁשָּׂמוּ בוֹ צִיץ הַזָּהָב שֶׁחָקוּק עָלָיו שֵׁם הַמְּפֹרָשׁ), until Daniel removed its swallowed content from its mouth (עַד שֶׁהוֹצִיא דָּנִיֵּאל בְּלָעוֹ מִפִּיו). And this is the secret of “a mouth they have, but they do not speak” (וְזֶהוּ סוֹד: "פֶּה לָהֶם וְלֹא יְדַבֵּרוּ") (Psalms 115:5), except through another mouth (אֶלָּא בְּפֶה אַחֵר), like the calf, which also had a plate in its mouth (כְּמוֹ הָעֵגֶל שֶׁהָיָה גַּם כֵּן טַס בְּפִיו), and it said: “These are your gods, O Israel” (וְאָמַר: "אֵלֶּה אֱלֹהֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל") (Exodus 32). And we have no greater tikkun than this (וְאֵין לָנוּ תִּקּוּן הַיּוֹתֵר גָּדוֹל מִזֶּה), to remove the swallowed element from the mouth of impurity (לְהוֹצִיא אֶת בִּלְעֲוֹ מִפִּיו שֶׁל טוּמְאָה), and they will all be sacrifices of the dead (וִיהְיוּ כֻּלָּם זִבְחֵי מֵתִים). And this is the secret of the verse that says (וְזֶהוּ סוֹד הַפָּסוּק הָאוֹמֵר): “They shall not mutter with their throat” (לֹא יֶהְגוּ בְּגְרוֹנָם) (Psalms 115:7). And just as the body (וּכְמוֹ שֶׁהַגּוּף), so long as it remains in existence (כָּל זְמַן הֱיוֹתוֹ קַיָּם), the soul spreads through all the limbs of the body (הַנְּשָׁמָה מִתְפַּשֶּׁטֶת בְּכָל אֵיבְרֵי הַגּוּף), and they are able to move (וִיכוֹלִים לְהִתְנוֹעֵעַ). And after death (וְאַחַר הַמִּיתָה), the soul goes out from the body (הַנְּשָׁמָה הוֹלֶכֶת מִן הַגּוּף), to its place of rest (אֶל מְקוֹם מְנוּחָתָהּ), the body is cast like a silent stone (הַגּוּף מֻטָּל כְּאֶבֶן דּוֹמֵם). So too in holiness (כֵּן בַּקְּדוּשָּׁה), the Inner Light spreads through all parts of the vessel (הָאוֹר פְּנִימִי מִתְפַּשֵּׁט בְּכָל חֶלְקֵי הַכֵּלִי), and gives it life (וְנוֹתֵן לוֹ חַיּוּת). And there is no small place (וְאֵין מָקוֹם מְעַט קָט), where His Inner Light is not attached to it (שֶׁאֵין הָאוֹר פְּנִימִי שֶׁלוֹ דָּבוּק בּוֹ). And this is the secret of what is said in Sefer Yetzirah (וְזֶהוּ סוֹד אוֹמְרוֹ בְּסֵפֶר יְצִירָה): “Ten and not eleven” (עֶשֶׂר וְלֹא אַחַד עָשָׂר), for the Light of the Emanator clings with them (שֶׁאוֹר הַמַּאֲצִיל דָּבוּק עִמָּהֶם), as the secret of vitality and Inner Light and soul for the vessels (בְּסוֹד חַיּוּת וְאוֹר פְּנִימִי וּנְשָׁמָה לַכֵּלִים), so that it is not fitting to add to the ten in any manner (עַד שֶׁלֹּא יִצְדַּק לְהוֹסִיף עַל הָעֶשֶׂר בְּשׁוּם פָּנִים). As it says in the Zohar (כְּמוֹ שֶׁאוֹמֵר בַּזֹּהַר): “He and His vitality are one in them” (אִיהוּ וְחִיוֹהִי חַד בְּהוֹן). And this explanation is necessary (וּפֵירוּשׁ זֶה מֻכְרָח), for if not so (דְּאִם לָאו כֵּן), it is difficult - why specifically eleven is implied (קָשֶׁה לָמָּה דַּוְקָא אֶחָד עָשָׂר הוּא מַשְׁמָע), but more than eleven is permitted? (אֲבָל יוֹתֵר מֵאֶחָד עָשָׂר הוּא מֻתָּר) Rather, his intention is only (אֶלָּא אֵין כַּוָּנָתוֹ אֶלָּא) regarding the Emanator, as we have explained (עַל הַמַּאֲצִיל כְּדְפֵירַשְׁנוּ). And if you, Heaven forbid (וְאִם אַתָּה חַס וְשָׁלוֹם), remove the clinging of the Emanator (מֵסִיר דְּבֵקוּת הַמַּאֲצִיל), on the grounds of nullifying the radiance of the Sefirot (מִטַּעַם שֶׁמְּבַטֵּל הַאֲרַת הַסְּפִירוֹת), to make everything revert to the Simple One (לִהְיוֹת הַכֹּל חוֹזֵר לִהְיוֹת הָאֶחָד הַפָּשׁוּט), through the intensity of the radiance and concealment of the Emanator (מִכֹּחַ תּוֹקֶף הַאֲרָה וְהֶעְלֵם הַמַּאֲצִיל), then you are nullifying the decree of “Ten and not nine” (אִם כֵּן אַתָּה מְבַטֵּל גְּזֵרַת עֶשֶׂר וְלֹא תֵשַׁע). But in impurity it is not so (אֲבָל בַּטֻּמְאָה אֵינוֹ כֵּן), for there one always finds increase and diminution (כִּי תָּמִיד יִשְׁפּוֹט בָּהֶם הַהוֹסָפָה וְהַגָּרְעוֹן), separation and multiplicity (פֵּרוּד וְרִיבּוּי), jealousy and hatred (קִנְאָה וְשִׂנְאָה), for the offspring of the shattered vessels caused them this (כִּי הַתּוֹלָדָה שֶׁל שִׁבְרֵי כֵּלִים גָּרְמָה לָהֶם זֶה), that they be from the letters of scattering and destruction (לִהְיוֹתָם מֵאוֹתִיּוֹת הַפִּזּוּר וְהַחֻרְבָּן). Therefore their place of dwelling is in ruin and in the wilderness (לָכֵן מְקוֹם מִשְׁכָּנָם בַּחֻרְבָּה וּבַמִּדְבָּר), and from the fall came the increase and the diminution (וּמִן הַנְּפִילָה נוֹלְדָה הַהוֹסָפָה וְהַגָּרְעוֹן), for the letters of this word fell (כִּי אוֹתִיּוֹת שֶׁל תֵּבָה זוֹ נָפְלָה), and went to the joining of letters of another word (וְהָלְכָה אֶל חִבּוּר אוֹתִיּוֹת תֵּבָה אַחֶרֶת), half and half (חֲצִיִּים בַּחֲצִיִּים), here they added and here they diminished (כָּאן הוֹסִיפוּ וְכָאן גָּרְעוּ), and there was born hatred and jealousy and increase (וְשָׁם נוֹלְדָה הַשִּׂנְאָה וְהַקִּנְאָה וְהַהוֹסָפָה). Therefore in impurity there are eleven klipot (לָכֵן בַּטֻּמְאָה יֵשׁ י"א קְלִיפּוֹת), whose vitality is not with them (שֶׁהַחַיּוּת שֶׁלָּהֶם אֵינוֹ עִמָּהֶם), and is not mingled within them (וְאֵינוֹ מְעֹרָב בְּתוֹכָם), but stands alone (אֶלָּא עוֹמֵד לְבַדּוֹ), as in the secret: “May Hashem rebuke you, O Satan” (בְּסוֹד: יִגְעַר ה׳ בְּךָ הַשָּׂטָן) (Zechariah 3). Gimel–Ayin and Ayin–Reish (ג״ע וְע״ר). And therefore there are eleven Sefirot of impurity (וְלָכֵן יֵשׁ י"א סְפִירוֹת הַטֻּמְאָה), for Kelippat Nogah alone (כִּי קְלִיפַּת נוֹגַה לְבַדָּהּ), is sometimes in holiness (לְפָעָמִים הִיא בַּקְּדוּשָּׁה), and is called “Scales of Justice” (וְנִקְרֵאת מֹאזְנֵי צֶדֶק).
