Daf 47a (דַּף מ״ז ע״א)

For it is the Middle Bar, uniting the two arms of the King (כִּי הוּא בְּרִיחַ הַתִּיכוֹן הַמְיַחֵד הַתְּרֵין דְּרוֹעִין דְּמַלְכָּא), therefore Ruach [Spirit] equals the Spelling in Full of Elohim with Yods (וְלָכֵן הָרוּחַ עוֹלֶה מִלּוּי אֱלֹהִים בְּיוּדִין), and when it comes to Him in the mystery of the Zivug [Union] (וּכְשֶׁבָּא אֵלָיו בְּסוֹד הַזִּוּוּג), Havayah and Elohim are united (נִתְחַבְּרוּ הוי״ה אֱלֹהִים), namely Tiferet and Malkhut (ת״ת וּמַלְכוּת), and the mystery is that Havayah equals Ram [Exalted] in numerical value (סוֹד הוי״ה עוֹלֶה רָ״ם), namely, “A Throne high and exalted” (דְּהַיְינוּ כִּסֵּא רָם וְנִשָּׂא) (Isaiah 6:1), for Ruach [Spirit] and Havayah together equal Ram [Exalted] in numerical value (כִּי רוּחַ וַהוי״ה עוֹלֶה רָ״ם), whereas in the Klipah it equals Mar [Bitter] (וּבַקְּלִיפָּה עוֹלֶה מָ״ר), and also equals Amalek (וְעוֹלֶה עֲמָלֵק), namely the attribute of the Dog (דְּהַיְינוּ מִדַּת הַכֶּלֶב), standing between the two cruel attributes (הָעוֹמֵד בֵּין שְׁתֵּי מִדּוֹת אַכְזָרִיּוֹת), namely the Ox and the Donkey (רָעוֹת הֵם שׁוֹ״ר וַחֲמוֹ״ר), and this, by countless separations (וְהוּא לְהַבְדִּיל כַּמָּה אֶלֶף הַבְדָּלוֹת), corresponds to Tiferet in Holiness (כְּנֶגֶד ת״ת שֶׁבַּקְּדֻשָּׁה), and it is the mystery of the Spirit (וְהוּא סוֹד רוּחַ), mediating between Fire and Water (הַמְמוּצָע בֵּין אֵשׁ וּמַיִם), and Ruach [Spirit] is literally the attribute of Tiferet (וְרוּחַ הוּא מִדַּת הַת״ת מַמָּשׁ), as it is said, “And Hashem Elohim walked in the Spirit of the day” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר וַיִּתְהַלֵּךְ ד׳ אֱלֹהִים לְרוּחַ הַיּוֹם) (Genesis 3:8), and the one cannot exist without the other in the Zivug [Union], and understand this (וְזֶה בְּלֹא זֶה אִי אֶפְשָׁר בַּזִּוּוּג וְהָבֵן). “A mighty wind, shattering mountains and breaking rocks—not in the wind was Hashem” (רוּחַ חָזָק מְפָרֵק הָרִים וּמְשַׁבֵּר סְלָעִים לֹא בָרוּחַ יהו״ה) (I Kings 19:11).

Its explanation is: this spirit is the storm wind (פֵּרוּשׁוֹ רוּחַ הַזֶּה הוּא הָרוּחַ סְעָרָה), it is Se'ar [Hair], the bed of affliction, may the Merciful One save us (הוּא שֵׂעָר עֶרֶשׂ דְּוַי רַחֲמָנָא לִיצְלַן), shaking all the sparks of life of the Manin Tevirin [Shattered Vessels] toward itself (הַמַּרְעִישׁ אֶת כָּל נִיצוֹצֵי חַיּוּת הַמָּאנִין תְּבִירִין אֵלָיו), so that they may not ascend (כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יַעֲלוּ), but remain sacrifices to the dead (וְיִשָּׁאֲרוּ הֵם זִבְחֵי מֵתִים), and it also gathers them to itself (וְגַם הוּא יְקַבְּצֵם אֵלָיו), so that no other nation may arise and reign beneath the heavens (שֶׁלֹּא יַעֲמֹד אֻמָּה אַחֶרֶת וְיִמְלֹךְ תַּחַת הַשָּׁמָיִם), and cast it down from its kingdom (וְיִדְחֶה אוֹתוֹ מִמַּלְכוּתוֹ), from taking hold of Nogah [Brightness] (מֵאֲחוֹז בְּנוֹגַהּ), which is the Spirit hovering over the face of the waters of this Havayah (אֲשֶׁר הִיא רוּחַ מְרַחֶפֶת עַל פְּנֵי הַמַּיִם שֶׁל הוי״ה), for when dominion is given to it (כִּי בִּזְמַן שֶׁנִּתַּן לוֹ מֶמְשָׁלָה), it ascends and takes hold of Nogah [Brightness] (עוֹלֶה הוּא וְאוֹחֵז בְּנוֹגַהּ), receives from it (וּמְקַבֵּל מִמֶּנּוּ), and raises armies to conquer the entire world (וּמַעֲמִיד חַיָּלוֹת לִכְבֹּשׁ אֶת כָּל הָעוֹלָם כֻּלּוֹ), therefore the Zohar Chadash says in Parashat Yitro (וְלָכֵן אוֹמֵר הַזֹּהַר חָדָשׁ פּ׳ יִתְרוֹ), that this spirit was the one that threw the whole world into turmoil before Nevukhadnetzar the Wicked (שֶׁהָרוּחַ הַזֶּה הוּא שֶׁהִרְעִישׁ אֶת כָּל הָעוֹלָם לִפְנֵי נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּר הָרָשָׁע), to conquer the entire world (לִכְבֹּשׁ אֶת כָּל הָעוֹלָם), and this is the mystery of the kingdom of Babylon (וְהוּא סוֹד מַלְכוּת בָּבֶל), and this is the mystery of Tohu, the dwelling place of impurity (וְהוּא סוֹד תֹּהוּ מְדוֹרָא דְּמְסָאֲבוּתָא), over which a person stands in astonishment, wondering why it rages, goes, and storms to seize the drops (שֶׁאָדָם מִשְׁתּוֹמֵם עָלָיו עַל מַה מַרְעִישׁ וְהוֹלֵךְ וְסוֹעֵר לְהַחֲזִיק בּוֹ הַטִּפִּין), yet it does not succeed (וְאֵינוֹ עוֹלֶה בְּיָדוֹ), for its end is death and slaughter (כִּי אַחֲרִיתוֹ מִיתָה וּשְׁחִיטָה), and understand this (וְהָבֵן), and the expression Tohu denotes bewilderment and astonishment (וּלְשׁוֹן תֹּהוּ הוּא תּוֹהֶא וְהִשְׁתּוֹמְמוּת).
