Daf 51b (דַּף נ״א ע״ב)
Heaven forbid (ח״ו), in the bands of Esav, that evil company (בְּכִתּוֹת עֵשָׂו חַבְרוּתָא בִישָׁא), to do evil to the dead who have already died (לַעֲשׂוֹת רָעָה לַמֵּתִים אֲשֶׁר כְּבָר מֵתוּ), together with the living who are still alive (עִם הַחַיִּים אֲשֶׁר הֵמָּה חַיִּים עוֹדֶנָּה), to seize and rob souls, bringing them down to the depths of Gehinnom (לִתְפֹּס וְלַעֲשׁוֹק נְשָׁמוֹת לְהוֹרִידָן לְעוֹמֶק הַגֵּיהִנָּם), especially the Dog, which announces them by its barking (וּבִפְרָט הַכֶּלֶב הַמּוֹדִיעַ אוֹתָם בִּנְבִיחָתוֹ), that upon the roads called the Snares of Death there is a certain soul (שֶׁיֵּשׁ בַּדְּרָכִים הַנִּקְרָאִים מוֹקְשֵׁי מָוֶת אֵיזֶה נְשָׁמָה), and who causes this (וּמִי גוֹרֵם אוֹתוֹ)? The Light that departed from the Way of Life (הָאוֹר שֶׁנִּסְתַּלֵּק מִדֶּרֶךְ חַיִּים), and no longer shines below during the course of the three days of Darkness (וְאֵינוֹ מֵאִיר לְמַטָּה בְּמַהֲלַךְ שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים חֹשֶׁךְ), and the thick darkness within it (וַאֲפֵלָה שֶׁבּוֹ), where the power of the Ox, the Dog, and the Donkey is bound together (וְשָׁם הוּא קֶשֶׁר שֶׁל כֹּחַ שׁוֹר כֶּלֶב חֲמוֹר), and concerning them the Torah commanded that they should not be joined together (וַעֲלֵיהֶם צִוְּתָה תוֹרָה שֶׁלֹּא יִהְיוּ בַּאֲגוּדָה אַחַת), as it is said, “You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר לֹא תַחֲרֹשׁ בְּשׁוֹר וּבַחֲמוֹר יַחְדָּו) (Deuteronomy 22:10), so that from their union the Klipah of Amalek should not emerge (שֶׁלֹּא יֵצֵא מִזִּוּוּגָם קְלִיפַּת עֲמָלֵק), who is the Dog that came from Esav through his mate Machalat, the daughter of Yishmael (שֶׁהוּא כֶּלֶב שֶׁבָּא מֵעֵשָׂו ע״י בַּת זוּגוֹ מָחֲלַת בַּת יִשְׁמָעֵאל). And when this Name Elohim is revealed (וּכְשֶׁמִּתְגַּלֶּה שֵׁם אֱלֹהִים זֶה), then the Fire of Darkness is illuminated (אָז הָאֵשׁ שֶׁל הַחֹשֶׁךְ אוֹר), and they cool this fire (וּמְצַנְּנִים הָאֵשׁ הַזֶּה), and this Elohim shines during the course of the three days of Darkness and thick darkness (וֶאֱלֹהִים זֶה מֵאִיר בְּמַהֲלַךְ שְׁלֹשֶׁת יְמֵי חֹשֶׁךְ וַאֲפֵלָה), which is the Way of Life (שֶׁכְּדֶרֶךְ חַיִּים), and at that time they cool the Gehinnom that is on this path (וְאָז בְּאוֹתוֹ הַפַּעַם מְצַנְּנִים לוֹ גֵּיהִנָּם שֶׁהוּא בַּדֶּרֶךְ הַזֶּה), for Gehinnom surrounds Gan Eden (כִּי גֵּיהִנָּם מְסַבֵּב הַגַּן עֵדֶן), in the mystery of, “The small and the great are there, and the servant is free from his master” (בְּסוֹד קָטֹן וְגָדוֹל שָׁם הוּא וְעֶבֶד חָפְשִׁי מֵאֲדֹנָיו) (Job 3:19). The proof of this is that Choshekh [Darkness] equals Koach Elohim [Power of Elohim] in numerical value (וְהָעֵד עַל זֶה חֹשֶׁךְ עוֹלֶה בַּחֶשְׁבּוֹן כֹּחַ אֱלֹהִים), namely the Elohim that gives power to illuminate the soul ascending above and descending below, so that it may not be robbed (שֶׁהוּא אֱלֹהִים הַנּוֹתֵן כֹּחַ לְהָאִיר לַנְּשָׁמָה הַהוֹלֶכֶת לְמַעְלָה וְהַיּוֹרֶדֶת לְמַטָּה שֶׁלֹּא תִתְעַשֵּׁק), and thereby the company of the Other Elohim and this bond of the wicked, called the Fire of Gehinnom, is broken apart (וּבָזֶה נִתְפָּרְדָה חֲבִילַת אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים וְקֶשֶׁר רְשָׁעִים הַזֶּה הַנִּקְרָא אֵשׁ שֶׁל גֵּיהִנָּם), and by what was it broken apart and utterly consumed (וּבַמָּה נִתְפָּרְדָה וְנַעֲשֵׂית כָּלָה)? By the Fire of the Shekhinah, which consumes fire (בְּאֵשׁ שֶׁל הַשְּׁכִינָה הָאוֹכֶלֶת אֵשׁ), as it is said, “For Hashem your God is a consuming Fire” (אַחַר שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר כִּי ה׳ אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֵשׁ אֹכְלָה הוּא) (Deuteronomy 4:24), and certainly not by the Fire of Havayah (וּבוַדַּאי לֹא בָאֵשׁ יהו״ה), for that completely abolishes all fires (כִּי הוּא הַמְבַטֵּל כָּל הָאֵשׁוֹת לְגַמְרֵי), And the proof is (וְהָרְאָיָה), for on the Shabbat Moshe is revealed in the gift of his portion (כִּי בַּשַּׁבָּת מִתְגַּלֶּה מֹשֶׁה בְּמַתְּנַת חֶלְקוֹ), namely the Name Havayah (הוּא שֵׁם יהו״ה), concerning whom it is said, “But You, Hashem, are exalted forever” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר עָלָיו וְאַתָּה מָרוֹם לְעוֹלָם יהו״ה) (Psalms 92:9), in the Psalm, “A Psalm, a Song for the Shabbat Day” (בְּמִזְמוֹר שִׁיר לְיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת) (Psalms 92:1), and at that time all the fires of Gehinnom are extinguished (וְאָז נִכְבִּים כָּל הָאֵשׁוֹת שֶׁל הגֵּיהִנָּם).
