Daf 57b (דַּף נ״ז ע״ב)

That is to say (כְּלוֹמַר), when a person writes the word Ohr [Light] (כְּשֶׁהָאָדָם כּוֹתֵב מִלַּת אוֹר), he must write it with Alef, Vav, and Resh (צָרִיךְ לְכָתְבוֹ בְּאָלֶ״ף וָי״ו רֵי״שׁ), and the Nekudah [Point], which is the Yod, enters between the Vav and the Resh of Ohr [Light] (וְהַנְּקוּדָּה שֶׁהִיא הַיוֹ״ד נִכְנֶסֶת בֵּין וָי״ו לְרֵי״שׁ שֶׁל אוֹר), for two reasons (לִשְׁתֵּי סִבּוֹת): first, to indicate that it is like a point within a great Light (הָאֶחָד לְהוֹרוֹת שֶׁהִיא כִּנְקוּדָּה בְּתוֹךְ אוֹר גָּדוֹל), and second, so that it will be called by the name Avir [Air] (וְהָאֶחָד כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּקָּרֵא בְּשֵׁם אֲוִיר), for when you place the Yod within the word Ohr [Light], it becomes Avir [Air] (כִּי כְּשֶׁתָּשִׂים יוֹ״ד בְּתוֹךְ מִלַּת אוֹר תִּמְצָא אֲוִי״ר), and Avir [Air] is somewhat denser than Ohr [Light] (וְהָאֲוִיר הוּא מְעַט יוֹתֵר עָב מֵאוֹר), for the Ohr [Light] is not perceived at all (כִּי הָאוֹר אֵינוֹ מוּרְגָּשׁ כְּלָל), whereas the letters of Avir [Air] are not so subtle and exalted, although they likewise cannot be grasped (בְּסוֹד אוֹתִיּוֹת דְּהָאֲוִיר אֵינוֹ כָּל כָּךְ זַךְ וְגָדוֹל הֲגַם שֶׁאֵינוֹ נִתְפָּס), and because it is the first of all the Avirim [Airs], it is called the Primordial Avir [Air] (וּלְהִיוֹת שֶׁהוּא רִאשׁוֹן לְכָל הָאֲוִירִים נִקְרָא אֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן).

Its third level is this (וְהַמַּדְרֵגָה הַשְּׁלִישִׁית שֶׁבּוֹ הִיא זֹאת): when the Yod of the Name S"G, which came from the Light of the Garment itself, descended into this Avir [Air] (כְּשֶׁיָּרְדָה הַיוֹ״ד שֶׁל ס״ג שֶׁהוּא מֵאוֹר הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ עַצְמוֹ לְמַטָּה בַּאֲוִיר זֶה), the Yod of the Primordial Avir [Air], which came from the Reshimu [Impression], attached itself to it (נִדְבְּקָה הַיוֹ״ד שֶׁל אֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן עִמָּהּ שֶׁהִיא מִן רְשִׁימוּ), and in its Spelling in Full it likewise produced another Yod (וְעָשְׂתָה בְּהַמִּלּוּי שֶׁלָּהּ גַּם כֵּן יוֹ״ד אַחֶרֶת), namely Vav-Dalet (וְהִיא ו״ד), whose numerical value is ten (שֶׁחֶשְׁבּוֹנָהּ יוֹ״ד), afterward it also became the mystery of the Heh (וְאַחַ״כ נַעֲשֵׂית גַּם כֵּן בְּסוֹד ה׳), which has the form of Dalet-Vav (שֶׁהִיא צוּרַת ד״ו), in the mystery of the two Partzufim [Configurations], as our Rabbis of blessed memory said (בְּסוֹד דּוּ פַּרְצוּפִין שֶׁאַרְזַ״ל), alluding to the Spelling in Full of this Yod (לִרְמוֹז עַל הַמִּלּוּי שֶׁל הַיוֹ״ד הַזֹּאת), whose numerical value is ten, corresponding to the ten Sefirot (שֶׁעוֹלֶה עֲשָׂרָה כְּמִנְיַן הַסְּפִירוֹת שֶׁהֵם גַּם כֵּן עֲשָׂרָה), and through this the sphere of the Tehiru came into being (וּבָזֶה נַעֲשָׂה כְּדוּר הַטְּהִירוּ), for Tehiru in the language of the Targum means Ohr [Light] (כִּי טְהִירוּ בִּלְשׁוֹן תַּרְגּוּם הוּא אוֹר), as our Rabbis of blessed memory said, “The lamp in its brightness” (כְּמוֹ שֶׁאַרְזַ״ל שְׁרָגָא בִּטְהִירוּ) (Chullin 60b).

It follows that when the Yod of the Garment withdrew, the Yod of the Reshimu [Impression] went with it (נִמְצָא כְּשֶׁנִּסְתַּלֵּק הַיוֹ״ד שֶׁל הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ הָלְכָה לָהּ גַּם הַיוֹ״ד שֶׁל הָרְשִׁימוּ עִמָּהּ), leaving only Ohr [Light] (וְנִשְׁאַר אוֹר), and this is the mystery of Yehi Ohr [Let There Be Light] (וְזֶהוּ סוֹד יְהִי אוֹר): the first Yod is the Yod of the Light of the Garment (שֶׁהִיא יוֹ״ד קַדְמָאָה י׳ שֶׁל אוֹר הַלְּבוּשׁ), the latter Yod of Yehi is the Yod of the Reshimu [Impression] that was in the Avir [Air] (י׳ בַּתְרָאָה שֶׁל יְהִ״י הִיא י׳ שֶׁל רְשִׁימוּ שֶׁהָיְתָה בַּאֲוִיר), which is the mystery of the Primordial Avir [Air], namely the Nekudah [Point] (שֶׁהוּא סוֹד אֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן שֶׁהוּא נְקוּדָּה), and because this Avir [Air] cannot be grasped, it is alluded to by the Heh of Yehi (וּלְהִיוֹת שֶׁאֲוִיר זֶה אֵינוֹ נִתְפָּס נִרְמַז בַּה׳ שֶׁל יְהִי), whose articulation requires only the breath of the mouth and no effort (שֶׁאֵין בְּמוֹצָאָהּ מִן הֶבֶל הַפֶּה טוֹרַח כִּי אִם הֶבֶל), just like the Avir [Air], which cannot be grasped (כְּמוֹ הָאֲוִיר שֶׁאֵינוֹ נִתְפָּס).

If you ask (וְאִם תֹּאמַר): the Nekudah [Point] remained and departed from the Ohr [Light] of the Reshimu [Impression], which is the Avir [Air], attaching itself to the Yod of the Garment, and from them the Tehiru came into being (נִשְׁאַר וְנִסְתַּלֵּק הַנְּקוּדָּה מִן אוֹר הָרְשִׁימוּ שֶׁהוּא אֲוִיר וְנִתְדַּבֵּק עִם י׳ שֶׁל מַלְבּוּשׁ וְנַעֲשָׂה מֵהֶם הַטְּהִירוּ), and the Tehiru is Ohr [Light] (וְהַטְּהִירוּ הוּא אוֹר), why then was it called Ohr [Light] before the coming of the Nekudah [Point], Avir [Air] after its arrival, and again Ohr [Light] after its departure (וּמַדּוּעַ נִקְרָא קֹדֶם בִּיאַת הַנְּקוּדָּה אוֹר וְאַחַר בִּיאָתָם נִקְרָא אֲוִיר וְאַחַר הִסְתַּלְּקוּתָם חָזַר וְנִקְרָא אוֹר)? Your answer is (תְּשׁוּבָתְךָ הִיא): the Ohr [Light] of the Reshimu [Impression] before... (שֶׁהָאוֹר שֶׁל רְשִׁימוּ קֹודֶם).
