Daf 69b (דַּף ס״ט ע״ב)
And likewise all of them (וְכֵן כֻּלָּם), “and there the Orayta was engraved to shine outward” (וְתַמָּן אִגְלִיף אוֹרַיְיתָא לְאַנְהָרָא לְבַר). Its explanation is: by the power of the Shamayim [Heavens], which includes them, in that very place the letters of the Orayta [Torah] were engraved, interwoven together (פֵּי׳ וּמִכֹּחַ הַשָּׁמַיִם הַכּוֹלֵל אוֹתָם בְּאוֹתוֹ מָקוֹם מַמָּשׁ נֶחְקְקוּ אוֹתִיּוֹת הָאוֹרַיְיתָא מְשֻׁלָּבוֹת), to shine outward (לְאַנְהָרָא לְחוּץ), for once they had congealed they possessed the power to illuminate outward for the sake of those below them (כֵּיוָן שֶׁנִּקְפְּאוּ יֵשׁ בָּהֶם כֹּחַ לְהָאִיר לַחוּץ לְצֹרֶךְ מִי שֶׁלְּמַטָּה מֵהֶם), understand this (וְהָבֵן), and this is the Torah SheBe'al Peh [Oral Torah], which receives the illumination of the Torah SheBiKhtav [Written Torah] (וְהַיְינוּ הַתּוֹרָה שֶׁבְּעַל פֶּה הַמְקַבֶּלֶת הֶאָרַת תּוֹרָה שֶׁבִּכְתָב), and all the Lights of the Torah were formed from the letters of the Alef-Bet of the Two Hundred and Thirty-One combinations, front and back (וְכָל הָאוֹרוֹת שֶׁל הַתּוֹרָה נַעֲשׂוּ מֵאוֹתִיּוֹת הָאַלְפָא בֵיתָא שֶׁל רל״א פָּנִים וְאָחוֹר). And he brings proof from the verse, “Yehi Ohr [Let There Be Light]” (וּמֵבִיא רְאָיָה מֵהַפָּסוּק יְהִי אוֹר) (Genesis 1:3), whose numerical value is Two Hundred and Thirty-One together with the inclusive Alef-Bet of AL-BM (שֶׁהוּא בְּגִי׳ רל״א עִם כְּלִילַת אַלְפָא בֵיתָא דְּא״ל בָּ״ם), whose numerical value is Two Hundred and Thirty-Two (הוּא בְּגִי׳ רל״ב), and together with the Names A"B [72], S"G [63], M"H [45], and B"N [52], it also equals the numerical value of Yehi Ohr [Let There Be Light] (וְעִם שֵׁמוֹת ע״ב ס״ג מ״ה ב״ן גַּם כֵּן בְּגִי׳ יְהִי אוֹר), and from them emerged the letters of Chesed [Kindness], called El Gadol [Great God] (וּמֵהֶם יָצְאוּ אוֹתִיּוֹת הַחֶסֶד הַנִּקְרָא אֵל גָּדוֹל), which is in Gedulah [Greatness], namely the attribute of Chesed [Kindness] (שֶׁהוּא בִּגְדוּלָה אֲשֶׁר הִיא מִדַּת הַחֶסֶד), for there is also El Gibbor [Mighty God] (כִּי יֵשׁ אֵל גִּבּוֹר),p1-73 which is from the attribute of Gevurah [Strength] (שֶׁהוּא מִמִּדַּת הַגְּבוּרָה), and because it is above the colors and hues that are colored below from them (וּלְהִיוֹת שֶׁהוּא לְמַעְלָה מֵהַגְּוָנִים וְהַצְּבָעִים הַמִּצְטַבְּעִים לְמַטָּה הַגְּוָנִים מֵהֶם), therefore the designation El Gibbor [Mighty God] does not apply to it (לָכֵן אֵין שַׁיָּךְ בּוֹ אֵל גִּבּוֹר), for this El derives from the word Elohim (שֶׁהוּא אֵל מִמִּלַּת אֱלֹהִים), whose mystery is El HaYam [God of the Sea] (שֶׁסּוֹדוֹ הוּא אֵל הַיָּם). Its explanation is: this El is formed from the fifty Gevurot [Powers], which are the mystery of the Sea (פֵּי׳ אֵל זֶה נַעֲשֶׂה מֵחֲמִשִּׁים גְּבוּרוֹת אֲשֶׁר הֵם סוֹד יָם). When the Zohar says shortly afterward in this passage, “But El Gadol [Great God]” (כְּשֶׁאוֹמֵר הַזֹּהַר בַּפָּרָשָׁה זוֹ בְּסָמוּךְ אֲבָל אֵל גָּדוֹל), it is formed from the mystery of the Name S"G [Sixty-Three] (נַעֲשֶׂה מִסּוֹד שֵׁם ס״ג), which contains three Yods and one Alef (שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ ג׳ יוּדִי״ן וְאָלֶ״ף אַחַת), whose numerical value is El (הָעוֹלָה אֵל), and this is the El Gadol [Great God] (וְהוּא הָאֵל גָּדוֹל), emerging from the mystery of the Yod of the Name S"G [63] (הַיּוֹצֵא מִסּוֹד יו״ד שֶׁל שֵׁם ס״ג), within which is the mystery of the aforementioned El (אֲשֶׁר בּוֹ סוֹד אֵל הַנִּזְכָּר), and it sends forth the El Gadol [Great God] from the Primordial Avir [Air] (וְהִיא שׁוֹלַחַת הָאֵל גָּדוֹל מִן אֲוִיר קַדְמָאָה), illuminating within it (שֶׁהִיא מְאִירָה בּוֹ), and forming the great sphere called Tehiru (וְעוֹשָׂה כַּדּוּר גָּדוֹל הַנִּקְרָא טְהִירוּ), and within it are the letters of the worlds through these seven (וּבְתוֹכוֹ הָאוֹתִיּוֹת שֶׁל הָעוֹלָמוֹת בַּז׳), and this is the meaning of what the Zohar says, “Yehi Ohr [Let There Be Light] is El Gadol [Great God], the mystery that emerged from the Primordial Avir [Air]; and Vayehi is the mystery of Choshekh [Darkness], which is called Elohim. Ohr [Light], in which the left was mingled with the right, and thereby, from the mystery of El, Elohim came into being; the right was included in the left, and the left in the right” (וְזֶהוּ שֶׁאוֹמֵר הַזֹּהַר יְהִי אוֹר דְּאִיהוּ אֵל גָּדוֹל רָזָא דְּנָפַק מֵאֲוִיר קַדְמָאָה וַיְהִי רָזָא דְּחֹשֶׁךְ דְּאִקְרֵי אֱלֹהִים אוֹר דְּאִתְבְּלִיל שְׂמָאלָא בִּימִינָא וּבְדִין מֵרָזָא דְּאֵל הֲוֵי אֱלֹהִים אִתְכְּלִיל יְמִינָא בִּשְׂמָאלָא וּשְׂמָאלָא בִּימִינָא).
Its explanation is: Yehi Ohr [Let There Be Light] is entirely Chesed [Kindness], emerging from the Primordial Avir [Air], as we have explained (וּפֵי׳ הוּא יְהִי אוֹר הוּא כֻּלּוֹ חֶסֶד יוֹצֵא מֵאֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן כִּדְפֵרַשְׁנוּ), and it emanated the letters of Chesed [Kindness] (וְהֶאֱצִיל אוֹתִיּוֹת שֶׁל חֶסֶד), and it is likewise the mystery of the Ohr Penimi [Inner Light] (וְהוּא גַּם כֵּן סוֹד אוֹר פְּנִימִי), afterward the letters of Din [Judgment], which are the mystery of the Choshekh [Darkness], also came forth (וְאַחַ״כ אוֹתִיּוֹת שֶׁל דִּין שֶׁהֵם סוֹד הַחֹשֶׁךְ שֶׁהֵם עָשׂוּ גַּם כֵּן), which are the mystery of the Kelim [Vessels] (סוֹד כֵּלִים), and this is the mystery of Vayehi [And There Was], whose numerical value is El of Elohim (וְהוּא סוֹד וַיְהִי שֶׁעוֹלֶה אֵל שֶׁל אֱלֹהִים), and afterward the Ohr [Light] of Vayehi Ohr [And There Was Light] included them all (וְאַחַ״כ אוֹר שֶׁל וַיְהִי אוֹר הָיָה כּוֹלְלָם).
Notes
Compare Emek HaMelekh, Part II, Gate 11, Chapter 5 (רְאוּ עֵמֶק הַמֶּלֶךְ, א, שַׁעַר יא, פֶּרֶק ה): “Since the seven Tikkunim [Rectifications] that we have explained extend from the attribute of Chesed [Kindness] and below, as is known (וּלְפִי שֶׁהַז׳ תִּקּוּנִים שֶׁפֵּרַשְׁנוּ מִן מִדַּת חֶסֶד וּלְמַטָּה כַּנּוֹדָע), which are the seven days of Creation (שֶׁהֵם ז׳ יוֹמִין דִּבְרֵאשִׁית), therefore these seven Tikkunim [Rectifications] are called Atik Yomin [Ancient of Days] (לָזֶה נִקְרְאוּ אֵלּוּ ז׳ תִּקּוּנִים עַתִּיק יוֹמִין). Afterward it says, ‘This is what is written: “Pele Yo'etz El Gibbor”’ (וְאָמַר אַחַר כָּךְ הֲדָא הוּא דִּכְתִיב פֶּלֶא יוֹעֵץ אֵל גִּבּוֹר) (Isaiah 9:5), ‘El, which is Gevurah [Strength], became sweetened’ (אֵל דְּהוּא גִּבּוֹר אִתְבַּסַּם). The explanation is that the word Pele consists of the letters Alef (פֵּרוּשׁ מִלַּת פֶּלֶא הוּא אוֹתִיּוֹת אָלֶ״ף), namely this Atik Yomin [Ancient of Days], from whom extend the thousand worlds of longing previously mentioned (דְּהַיְינוּ עַתִּיק יוֹמִין זֶה שֶׁנִּמְשָׁכִין מִמֶּנּוּ אֶלֶף עָלְמִין דְּכִסּוּפִין הַנִּזְכָּרִים). ‘Yo'etz El Gibbor’ means that He sweetens and harmonizes (יוֹעֵץ אֵל גִּבּוֹר רָצָה לוֹמַר מְמַתֵּק וּמְמַזֵּג), and then it explains whom He sweetens and harmonizes (וְאָזִיל וּמְפָרֵשׁ לְמִי הוּא מְמַתֵּק וּמְמַזֵּג). It says, ‘El Gibbor, the Primordial World, which emerged from the First Tikkun [Rectification]’ (וְאָמַר אֵל גִּבּוֹר עָלְמָא קַדְמָאָה דְּנָפִיק מִתִּקּוּנָא קַדְמָאָה), namely from the principal Yod of the Name S"G [Sixty-Three] itself (הַיְינוּ מִן הַיוֹ״ד הָעִקָּרִיּוֹת שֶׁל שֵׁם ס״ג עַצְמוֹ), and it says ‘emerged’ because at first it was concealed in potential within the Head of the Dikna [Beard], and now it emerged from potential into actuality and descended below (וְאָמַר דְּנָפִיק כִּי מִתְּחִלָּה הָיָה סָתוּם בְּכֹחַ בְּרֵישָׁא דְּדִיקְנָא, וְעַתָּה יָצָא מִכֹּחַ אֶל הַפֹּעַל וְיָרַד לְמַטָּה). It says ‘rules,’ because every world possesses its own unique dominion unlike any other world (וְאָמַר שָׁלִיט, כִּי בְּכָל עוֹלָם יֵשׁ שָׁלְטָנוּת מְיֻחֶדֶת, מַה שֶּׁאֵינוֹ בָּעוֹלָם אַחֵר), and it says, ‘It ascends to a thousand thousands and ten thousand myriads of masters of shields’ (וְאָמַר סָלִיק לְאֶלֶף אַלְפִין וְרִבּוֹא רִבְווֹן מָארֵי תְּרִיסִין). The meaning of Marei Terisin [Masters of Shields] is the powers extending from the tips of this ‘El’ (עִנְיַן מָארֵי תְּרִיסִין, הַיְינוּ הַכּוֹחוֹת הַנִּמְשָׁכוֹת מִן קוֹצִין אֵלֶּה שֶׁבְּאֵל זֶה), which are the mystery of three ‘El’ names (שֶׁהֵם סוֹד ג׳ אֵל). Why specifically three (לָמָּה הֵם ג׳ דַּוְקָא)? Because their root is from the three Yods (מִפְּנֵי שֶׁשָּׁרְשָׁם מִן ג׳ יוּדִין), and in every fully spelled Yod there is the form of an Alef when you draw it (וּבְכָל יוֹ״ד מָלֵא יֵשׁ צוּרַת אָלֶף כְּשֶׁתְּצַיְּרֶהָ), and three times ‘El’ equals the numerical value of Magen [Shield] (וְג׳ פְּעָמִים אֵל עוֹלֶה כְּמִנְיַן מָגֵ״ן), and the Aramaic translation of Magen [Shield] is Taris [Shield] (וְתַרְגּוּמוֹ שֶׁל מָגֵן הוּא תְּרִיס).”
