Daf 70b (דַּף ע׳ ע״ב)
And this is the mystery of Vayar [And He Saw], whose letters spell Avir [Air] (וְזֶהוּ סוֹד וַיַּרְא הוּא אוֹתִיּוֹת אֲוִיר), the precious Avir [Air], called the Primordial Avir [Air] (הָאֲוִיר הַנֶּחְמָד הַנִּקְרָא אֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן), through which the aspect of the Kelim [Vessels] was brought into being by the Yod (שֶׁנַּעֲשָׂה ע״י הַיוֹ״ד בְּחִינַת כֵּלִים),p1-74 which is the mystery of Elohim (שֶׁהוּא סוֹד אֱלֹהִים), in order to conceal the good Ohr [Light] (לִגְנוֹז אֶת הָאוֹר הַטּוֹב), namely the Ohr Penimi [Inner Light] within it (הוּא אוֹר הַפְּנִימִי בְּתוֹכוֹ), which is compelled to contract and gather within itself (אֲשֶׁר הוּא מֻכְרָח לְהִתְצַמְצֵם וּלְהִתְקַמֵּץ בְּתוֹכוֹ), and does not shine with all its power (וְאֵינוֹ מַבְהִיק בְּכָל כֹּחוֹ). Alternatively, it also alludes to the World of Tikkun [Rectification] (אוֹ גַּם כֵּן הוּא מְרַמֵּז עַל עוֹלָם הַתִּקּוּן), in which the five Partzufim [Configurations] were formed (שֶׁנַּעֲשָׂה בּוֹ ה׳ פַּרְצוּפִין), each possessing ten Sefirot (וּבְכָל אַחַת יו״ד סְפִירוֹת), through the Yod of S"G [Sixty-Three] and the Name B"N [Fifty-Two] (ע״י הַיוֹ״ד שֶׁל ס״ג וְשֵׁם ב״ן), namely the Vav-Heh of the Name B"N [Fifty-Two] (ו״ה שֶׁל שֵׁם ב״ן), as is known (כַּנּוֹדָע), and this was in order to distance the Light (וְהָיָה זֶה כְּדֵי לְהַרְחִיק הָאוֹר), so that one Garment would come after another Garment, and one covering after another covering (וְיָבֹא לְבוּשׁ אַחַר לְבוּשׁ וְכִסּוּי אַחַר כִּסּוּי), so that the Light would become more refined (כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיֶה הָאוֹר יוֹתֵר מְבוּשָּׂם), and this too was accomplished through the Yod and the Heh from the Avir [Air] (וְגַם זֶה נַעֲשָׂה ע״י הַיוֹ״ד וְהַה״י מֵאֲוִיר), which also alludes to Vayar [And He Saw], whose letters spell Avir [Air] (שֶׁהוּא מְרַמֵּז גַּם כֵּן עַל וַיַּרְא שֶׁהוּא אוֹתִיּוֹת אֲוִיר), because they come from the Primordial Avir [Air] (לִהְיוֹת שֶׁבָּאִים מֵאֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן). These five Partzufim [Configurations] were rectified through the seven Ohr Penimim [Inner Lights] of the Manin Tevirin [Shattered Vessels] (וְהַחֲמִשָּׁה פַּרְצוּפִין הַלָּלוּ נִתְקְנוּ ע״י ז׳ אוֹרוֹת פְּנִימִיּוֹת שֶׁל מָאנִין תְּבִירִין), which is the mystery of Ze'ir Anpin that shattered in the World of Tohu (שֶׁהוּא סוֹד זְעֵיר הַנִּשְׁבָּר בְּעוֹלָם הַתֹּהוּ), and from it were rectified Arich Anpin, Abba, Imma, Ze'ir Anpin, and Nukvah (וּמִמֶּנּוּ נִתְקַן אֲרִיךְ אַבָּא וְאִמָּא זְעֵיר וְנוּקְבֵיהּ), therefore the Zohar says, “This is the Middle Pillar” (וְלָכֵן אוֹמֵר הַזֹּהַר דָּא עַמּוּדָא דְּאֶמְצָעוּתָא), which everywhere refers to Ze'ir Anpin (שֶׁהוּא זְעֵיר אַנְפִּין בְּכָל מָקוֹם), “for good shines above and below” (כִּי טוֹב אַנְהִיר עִילָּא וְלְתַתָּא), that is to say, it illuminated Above and below (ר״ל שֶׁהָיָה מֵאִיר לְמַעְלָה וּלְמַטָּה), bringing about rectifications in all the Partzufim [Configurations], even in Arich Anpin, and certainly below it (בְּכָל הַפַּרְצוּפִין עָשָׂה תִּקּוּנִים גַּם בַּאֲרִיךְ וּמִכָּל שֶׁכֵּן לְמַטָּה מִמֶּנּוּ), therefore it says, “and all the other sides” (לָכֵן אוֹמֵר וְכָל שְׁאָר סִטְרִין), and also the four worlds received their impression from the World of Atzilut (וְגַם הָאַרְבַּע עוֹלָמוֹת נַעֲשָׂה לָהֶם רֹשֶׁם לְעוֹלָם הָאֲצִילוּת), and likewise all of them (וְכֵן כֻּלָּם), see Limudim (עַיֵּין בְּלִמּוּדִים). All of this was accomplished through the Name Havayah (וְכָל זֶה עָשָׂה בְּשֵׁם הוי״ה), which has five extremities (שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ חֲמִשָּׁה קְצָווֹת), each alluding to a Partzuf [Configuration], each forming a complete Partzuf [Configuration] (שֶׁכָּל אֶחָד רוֹמֵז עַל פַּרְצוּף עָשָׂה פַּרְצוּף שָׁלֵם), in the mystery of the apex of the Yod, alluding to Atika Kadisha [Holy Ancient One] (בְּסוֹד קוֹצוֹ שֶׁל יו״ד הָרוֹמֵז עַל עַתִּיקָא קַדִּישָׁא), the Yod itself alluding to Abba (הַיוֹ״ד עַצְמָהּ רוֹמֶזֶת עַל אַבָּא), the first Heh to Imma (ה׳ רִאשׁוֹנָה בְּאִמָּא), the Vav to Ze'ir Anpin (ו׳ בִּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין), and the final Heh to the Malkhut, the Nukvah of Ze'ir Anpin (ה׳ אַחֲרוֹנָה בְּמַלְכוּת נוּקְבֵיהּ דִּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין), and likewise the four worlds allude to this Name (וְלָכֵן גַּם הַד׳ עוֹלָמוֹת רוֹמְזִים עַל הַשֵּׁם הַזֶּה), while the apex of the Yod alludes to the World of the Ein Sof (וְהַקּוֹץ שֶׁל הַיוֹ״ד רוֹמֶזֶת לְעוֹלַם הָאֵין סוֹף), therefore the Zohar says, “In the mystery of the Name Havayah, the Name that unites all sides” (לָכֵן אוֹמֵר הַזֹּהַר בְּרָזָא הוי״ה שְׁמָא דַּאֲחִיד לְכָל סִטְרִין), and it also possesses twelve permutations (וְגַם יֵשׁ לוֹ י״ב צֵרוּפִין), alluding to the twelve boundaries in the gates of the Supernal Yerushalayim [Jerusalem], the twelve Heikhalot [Palaces] of the twelve tribes (לִרְמוֹז עַל י״ב גְּבוּלִים שֶׁבְּשַׁעֲרֵי יְרוּשָׁלַיִם שֶׁלְּמַעְלָה, י״ב הֵיכָלוֹת שֶׁל י״ב שְׁבָטִים).
Notes
Compare Emek HaMelekh, Part 1, Gate 4, Chapter 1 (רְאוּ עֵמֶק הַמֶּלֶךְ, א, שַׁעַר ד, פֶּרֶק א): “We explained above that after the folding of the Garment (אָמַרְנוּ לְמַעְלָה, שֶׁאַחַר קִפּוּל הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ), namely after it was interrupted and its lower half became included within the upper half (דְּהַיְינוּ אַחַר שֶׁנִּפְסַק וְנִכְלַל חֶצְיוֹ הַתַּחְתּוֹן בָּעֶלְיוֹן), the Yod remained at the end of the Primordial Avir [Air] below without its counterpart (וְהַיוֹ״ד נִשְׁאֶרֶת בְּסוֹפוֹ שֶׁל אֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן לְמַטָּה בְּלֹא בַּת זוּג), and before this Yod descended below (וְקֹדֶם שֶׁיָּרְדָה הַיוֹ״ד הַזֹּאת לְמַטָּה), the place of the lower half of the Garment was like an empty place, though not truly empty (הָיָה מְקוֹם חֲצִי הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ כְּמוֹ מָקוֹם פָּנוּי, וְלֹא מָקוֹם פָּנוּי מַמָּשׁ), for in any case there remained within it the Reshimu [Impression] of the Ohr [Light] of the Ein Sof (כִּי עַל כָּל פָּנִים נִשְׁאֲרָה בּוֹ רֹשֶׁם אוֹר אֵין סוֹף), namely the Ohr [Light] of the Essence of the parchment and the Ohr [Light] of the letters of the Garment (דְּהַיְינוּ אוֹר עַצְמוּת הַנְּיָיר, אוֹר אוֹתִיּוֹת הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ), and there remained within it the Ohr [Light] of the Reshimu [Impression] of half of the Garment (וְהָיָה בּוֹ אוֹר רְשִׁימוּ שֶׁל חֲצִי הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ), in the mystery of Yods (בְּסוֹד יוּדִין). You already know that the Yod is composed of many points, as the geometers have said (וּכְבָר יָדַעְתָּ שֶׁהַיוֹ״ד הִיא מְקֻבֶּצֶת מִנְּקוּדוֹת הַרְבֵּה כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמְרוּ בַּעֲלֵי הַהַנְדָּסָה). Therefore, from the Reshimu [Impression] of the points of the Yods that were fixed within this Primordial Avir [Air] (אִם כֵּן, מֵהָרְשִׁימוּ שֶׁל נְקוּדוֹת יוּדִי״ן שֶׁהָיוּ קְבוּעוֹת בַּאֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן הַזֶּה), they all gathered together (נִתְקַבְּצוּ כֻּלָּם אֵצֶל עַצְמָם), becoming one great Yod (וְנַעֲשׂוּ יוֹ״ד גְּדוֹלָה), and this Yod was concealed within the letters of Ohr [Light], becoming Avir [Air] (וְהַיוֹ״ד הַזֹּאת גְּנוּזָה בְּתוֹךְ אוֹתִיּוֹת אוֹר, וְנַעֲשֵׂית אֲוִיר), and this is the Primordial Avir [Air] mentioned by the Zohar (וְהַיְינוּ אֲוִירָא קַדְמָאָה שֶׁאוֹמֵר הַזֹּהַר). Afterward, from the Novlot [Fallen Emanations] of Above it was built in its proper rectification (וְאַחַר כָּךְ מִן הַנּוֹבְלוֹת שֶׁל מַעְלָה נִבְנָה כְּתִקּוּנוֹ), and it is called Primordial because it is the first Avir [Air] and the beginning of all the Avirim [Airs] in the world (וְנִקְרָא קַדְמָאָה, לְפִי שֶׁהוּא הָאֲוִיר הָרִאשׁוֹן וּתְחִלַּת כָּל אֲוִירִין שֶׁבָּעוֹלָם). Had it been called Ohr [Light], it could not have been called the Primordial Ohr [Light], because the Ohr [Light] of the Garment preceded it (וְאִם הָיָה נִקְרָא אוֹר לֹא הָיָה יָכוֹל לִקְרוֹא אוֹתוֹ אוֹר קַדְמוֹן, מִפְּנֵי שֶׁכְּבָר קְדָמוֹ אוֹר הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ), likewise the Tehiru could not properly be called Ohr [Light], because the Ohr [Light] of the Garment preceded it (וְכֵן טְהִירוּ לֹא הָיָה רָאוּי לִקְרוֹתוֹ אוֹר, מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאוֹר הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ קְדָמוֹ), nor was it proper to call it the Primordial Tehiru, because the Supernal Tehiru preceded it (וְגַם אֵינוֹ מִן הָרָאוּי לִקְרוֹתוֹ טְהִירוּ קַדְמָאָה, מִפְּנֵי שֶׁקְּדָמוֹ טְהִירוּ עִלָּאָה).”
Compare Emek HaMelekh, Part 1, Gate 5, Chapter 2 (רְאוּ עֵמֶק הַמֶּלֶךְ, א, שַׁעַר ה, פֶּרֶק ב): “From these returns, descents, and similar processes (מֵאֵלּוּ הַחֲזָרוֹת וּנְפִילָה וְכַדּוֹמֶה לָהֶם), the Shattering of the Kelim [Vessels] came into being (נִתְהַוֵּית שְׁבִירַת הַכֵּלִים), and from them the Judgments and the Klipot [Shells] came into being (וְנִתְהַוּוּ הַדִּינִים וְהַקְּלִיפּוֹת), and from this return of the aforementioned Yod, which is Judgment (וּמֵהַחֲזָרָה זוֹ שֶׁל הַיוֹ״ד הַנִּזְכֶּרֶת שֶׁהִיא דִּין), the Primordial Avir [Air] became somewhat embodied and thickened (נִתְגַּלֵּם וְנִתְעַבָּה קְצָת אֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן), becoming the sphere called in the Zohar the Tehiru (וְנַעֲשָׂה כַּדּוּר הַנִּקְרָא בְּסֵפֶר הַזֹּהַר טְהִירוּ). This is the meaning of what the Zohar says in its Introduction: ‘Smoke in the Golem [Unformed Mass] is fixed in a ring, neither black nor white, nor any color at all’ (וְזֶהוּ שֶׁאוֹמֵר הַזֹּהַר בְּהַקְדָּמָתוֹ בְּאוֹמְרוֹ קוּטְרָא בְּגוֹלְמָא נָעִיץ בְּעִזְקָא, לָא אוּכָּם וְלָא חִוָּר וְלָאו גָּוְון כְּלָל) (Zohar 1:15a), meaning that the return of this Yod, which produced the aforementioned Reshimu [Impression], namely this sphere, is like a Golem [Unformed Mass] (כְּלוֹמַר הַחֲזָרָה מֵהַיוֹ״ד הַזֹּאת שֶׁעָשְׂתָה רֹשֶׁם הַנִּזְכָּר, שֶׁהוּא הַכַּדּוּר הַזֶּה, הוּא כְּמוֹ גֹּלֶם), because it is like a column of smoke (מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא כְּמוֹ קִטּוּר עָשָׁן), and just as smoke appears as a Golem [Unformed Mass] yet cannot be grasped (וּכְמוֹ שֶׁהֶעָשָׁן נִרְאֶה גֹּלֶם וְאֵינוֹ נִתְפָּס), so too this sphere is like a Golem [Unformed Mass] (כָּךְ הַכַּדּוּר הַזֶּה הוּא כְּמוֹ גֹּלֶם), and because it appears spherical yet cannot be grasped (וּמִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא נִרְאֶה כַּדּוּרִי וְאֵינוֹ נִתְפָּס), there is in it neither Din [Judgment], namely black (שֶׁאֵין בּוֹ לֹא דִּין, דְּהַיְינוּ אוּכָּם), nor white, namely Chesed [Kindness] (וְלֹא חִוָּר, דְּהַיְינוּ חֶסֶד), nor any color at all, namely Rachamim [Mercy] (וְלָאו גָּוְון כְּלָל דְּהַיְינוּ רַחֲמִים), rather this radiant sphere is fixed in the aforementioned Yod (אֶלָּא כַּדּוּר זַהֲרֵי נָעוּץ בַּיוֹ״ד הַנִּזְכֶּרֶת), namely, ‘fixed in a ring’ (דְּהַיְינוּ נָעִיץ בְּעִזְקָא), which is called the ring, as mentioned in the Introduction to the Tikkunim (שֶׁהִיא הַנִּקְרֵאת טַבַּעַת, כַּנִּזְכָּר בְּהַקְדָּמַת תִּקּוּנִים).”
