אָדָם קַדְמוֹן

This likeness is what the Emanator, blessed be He, originated at the beginning (זֶה הַדְּמוּת הוּא שֶׁהִמְצִיאוֹ בַּתְּחִלָּה הַמַּאֲצִיל בָּרוּךְ הוּא), and He desired that according to this structure, in all its statutes and laws, would He act in the creation of His world (וְרָצָה שֶׁעַל פִּי אוֹתוֹ הַסֵּדֶר בְּכָל חֻקּוֹתָיו וּמִשְׁפָּטָיו יִהְיֶה הוּא פּוֹעֵל בִּבְרוֹא עוֹלָמוֹ). And when He would act in this structure (וּכְשֶׁיִּהְיֶה הוּא פּוֹעֵל בַּסֵּדֶר הַזֶּה), then the creation would be only one alone (הִנֵּה לֹא תִהְיֶה הַבְּרִיאָה אֶלָּא אַחַת לְבַד), for behold, just as - by way of example - in the form of man there is the heart, which sends the blood to all the limbs (כִּי הִנֵּה כְּמוֹ דֶרֶךְ מָשָׁל - שֶׁבִּדְמוּת הָאָדָם יֵשׁ הַלֵּב שֶׁשׁוֹלֵחַ הַדָּם אֶל כָּל הָאֵבָרִים), so was one creation made, from which nourishment or influence would go forth to other creations (כֵּן נִבְרְאָה בְּרִיאָה אַחַת שֶׁמִּמֶּנָּה יֵצֵא הַזָּנָה אוֹ הַשְׁפָּעָה אֶל נִבְרָאִים אֲחֵרִים), who would be as its limbs to the heart (שֶׁיִּהְיוּ לוֹ כְּאֵבְרֵי הַגּוּף אֶל הַלֵּב). And according to the channels of this blood in the limbs of man (וּלְפִי הַמַּעֲבָרוֹת אֲשֶׁר לַדָּם הַזֶּה בְּאֵבְרֵי הָאָדָם), so would the types of created beings be stationed as those channels for that influence (כָּךְ יִהְיוּ מִינֵי בְּרִיאוֹת עוֹמְדוֹת כְּמַעֲבָרוֹת הָהֵם לָהַשְׁפָּעָה הַהִיא).

Until it is found that, in order to complete the action of the Emanator according to the likeness of Adam in all its laws (עַד שֶׁנִּמְצָא, שֶׁלְהַשְׁלִים פְּעוּלַת הַמַּאֲצִיל לְפִי דְּמוּת הָאָדָם בְּכָל מִשְׁפָּטָיו), all the upper and lower created beings that exist today must exist (יִמָּצְאוּ כָּל הַנִּבְרָאִים הָעֶלְיוֹנִים וְהַתַּחְתּוֹנִים הַנִּמְצָאִים הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה), and the connection and relation between them must be as it is today (וִיהִיֶה בֵּינֵיהֶם הַקֶּשֶׁר וְהַשַּׁיָּכוּת אֲשֶׁר לָהֶם הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה).

Thus, we learn (נִמְצָאנוּ לְמֵדִים) that the entire world, in all its levels, is a Great Adam (כִּי כָּל הָעוֹלָם כֻּלּוֹ בְּכָל מַדְרֵגוֹתָיו הוּא אָדָם גָּדוֹל), and Adam is a small world (וְהָאָדָם הוּא עוֹלָם קָטָן), and there is in this only what is in that (וְאֵין בַּזֶּה אֶלָּא מַה שֶּׁבַּזֶּה).

According to the parts that are in Adam (וּכְפִי הַחֲלָקִים אֲשֶׁר בָּאָדָם), so shall be the influences required for him (כָּךְ תִּהְיֶיןָ הַהַשְׁפָּעוֹת הַצְּרִיכוֹת לוֹ). For every part requires sustenance (כִּי כָּל חֵלֶק צָרִיךְ קִיּוּם), and every sustenance is through influence (וְכָל קִיּוּם עַל יְדֵי הַשְׁפָּעָה הוּא). Accordingly, when the whole of Adam is influenced, the whole world is influenced (וּלְפִי זֶה, בִּהְיוֹת כָּל הָאָדָם מֻשְׁפָּע, יִהְיֶה כָּל הָעוֹלָם מֻשְׁפָּע), and likewise the reverse (וְכֵן לַהֲפֹךְ): if influence is lacking from the world, a part of Adam will be lacking (וּבְהַחְסֵר מִן הָעוֹלָם הַשְׁפָּעָה—יֶחֱסַר חֵלֶק מִן הָאָדָם); or, if influence is lacking from Adam, a part of the world will be lacking (אוֹ בְּהַחְסֵר מִן הָאָדָם הַשְׁפָּעָה—תֶּחְסַר חֵלֶק מִן הָעוֹלָם).

It is true that the Emanator, blessed be He, could have bestowed influence upon the world and not upon man (אֱמֶת, כִּי הָיָה יָכוֹל הַמַּאֲצִיל בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְהַשְׁפִּיעַ לָעוֹלָם וְלֹא לָאָדָם), or upon man and not upon the world (לָאָדָם וְלֹא לָעוֹלָם). Yet the manner of His action was that these two existents—the world and man—should be bound to one another For He created man (כִּי הוּא בָּרָא אָדָם), and He created the world in creating man (וּבָרָא עוֹלָם בִּבְרוֹא אָדָם). And in truth, this ordering of the likeness of man also establishes this matter—that this bond should exist (וּבֶאֱמֶת, שֶׁסֵּדֶר דְּמוּת אָדָם הַזֶּה נוֹתֵן גַּם הָעִנְיָן הַזֶּה לִהְיוֹת זֶה הַקֶּשֶׁר), and even that man himself should occupy a level among the levels of creation (וַאֲפִלּוּ לִהְיוֹת הָאָדָם עַצְמוֹ בְּמַדְרֵגָה שֶׁהִיא בְּמַדְרֵגוֹת הַבְּרִיאָה).

That is: if the number of the levels of creation were according to the likeness of man—for example, fifty (פֵּירוּשׁ—כִּי אִם מִסְפַּר מַדְרֵגוֹת הַבְּרִיאָה תִּהְיֶיןָ לְפִי דְּמוּת הָאָדָם, דֶּרֶךְ מָשָׁל—חֲמִשִּׁים)—this ordering of the likeness would place man himself, for example, at the fiftieth level among them (יִתֵּן סֵדֶר הַדְּמוּת הַזֶּה לִהְיוֹת הָאָדָם עַצְמוֹ, דֶּרֶךְ מָשָׁל—בַּמַּדְרֵגָה הַחֲמִשִּׁים מֵהֶם), neither less nor more (לֹא פָּחוֹת וְלֹא יוֹתֵר), for there would be twenty-five above him and twenty-five below him (כִּי יִהְיֶה כ״ה עֶלְיוֹנִים וְכ״ה תַּחְתּוֹנִים מִמֶּנּוּ). Understand this well (וְהָבֵן הֵיטֵב).
