The Ten Martyrs of the Kingdom
And now I will inform you of the matter of these drops For Yosef is himself the secret of the Yesod (כִּי יוֹסֵף הוּא עַצְמוֹ סוֹד הַיְּסוֹד), and his actions were in the secret of the rectifications of Mashiach ben Yosef (וּמַעֲשָׂיו בְּסוֹד תִּקּוּנֵי מָשִׁיחַ בֶּן יוֹסֵף הָיוּ). And in his sin through this thought, the Yesod was damaged (וּבְחֶטְאוֹ בְּמַחֲשָׁבָה הַזֹּאת – נִפְגַּם הַיְּסוֹד), and from there these ten drops went out (וְיָצְאוּ מִשָּׁם עֶשֶׂר הַטִּפִּים הָאֵלֶּה). And you already know what these sparks are that emerge from Da'atp1-26 (וְכְבָר יָדַעְתָּ מַה הֵם אֵלֶּה הַנִּצּוֹצוֹת הַיּוֹצְאִים מִן הַדַּעַת). And these were required to come into the world and be handed over to death in many exiles (וְאֵלֶּה הֻצְרְכוּ לָבוֹא בָּעוֹלָם וּלְהִמָּסֵר לַמָּוֶת בְּכַמָּה גָּלוּיוֹת), in order to rectify what was damaged by their departure into the Sitra achra (כְּדֵי לְתַקֵּן מַה שֶׁנִּפְגַּם בְּצֵאתָם הֵם לַסִּטְרָא אַחֲרָא).
And behold, these ten are the Ten Martyrs And likewise all those who were martyred in every generation are from this secret And the secret of the matter is that the aspect of Mashiach ben Yosef is what was damaged (וְסוֹד הָעִנְיָן, כִּי בְּחִינַת מָשִׁיחַ בֶּן יוֹסֵף הִיא שֶׁנִּפְגְּמָה), and he himself was destined to die at the end of all (וְהוּא עַצְמוֹ הָיָה צָרִיךְ לָמוּת בְּסוֹף הַכֹּל).
For martyrdom at the hands of the nations is nothing but a Tikkun for what was handed over to the Sitra achra (כִּי אֵין מִיתַּת הַהֲרִיגָה בְּיְדֵי נָכְרִים אֶלָּא תִּקּוּן לְמַה שֶׁנִּמְסַר בְּיַד הַסִּטְרָא אַחֲרָא), to raise the holiness from within it (לְהַעֲלוֹת הַקְּדוּשָּׁה מִמֶּנָּה). And all the others who were slain are all called branches from him (וְכָל הָאֲחֵרִים שֶׁנֶּהֶרְגוּ, נִקְרָאִים כֻּלָּם עֲנָפִים מִמֶּנּוּ), for all of them proceed in the path of this Tikkun of Mashiach ben Yosef (כִּי כֻּלָּם לְבְחִינַת תִּקּוּן זֶה שֶׁל מָשִׁיחַ בֶּן יוֹסֵף הֵם הוֹלְכִים). But the ten are the roots, and they are the Ten Martyrs (אֲבָל הָעֲשָׂרָה עִקָּרִים, שֶׁהֵם כְּמוֹ שָׁרָשִׁים לְכָל הָאֲחֵרִים – הֵם עֲשֶׂרֶת הַהֲרוּגֵי מַלְכוּת), who are the very aspect of the ten drops themselves (שֶׁהֵם בְּחִינַת הָעֶשֶׂר טִּפִּין עַצְמָם), and all the rest are but branches (שֶׁכָּל הַשְּׁאָר הֵם כְּמוֹ עֲנָפִים). And the essential one among the ten is Rabbi Akiva ben Yosef (וְהָעִקָּר בָּעֲשָׂרָה עַצְמָם הוּא רַבִּי עֲקִיבָא בֶּן יוֹסֵף), for he was the very aspect of Mashiach ben Yosef (שֶׁהוּא הָיָה בְּחִינַת מָשִׁיחַ בֶּן יוֹסֵף עַצְמוֹ).
And therefore he alone is mentioned in the Midrash (וְעַל כֵּן הוּא הַנִּזְכָּר בַּמִּדְרָשׁ), whom Moshe saw and said, “This is Torah?!” etc. (שֶׁרָאָה אוֹתוֹ מֹשֶׁה וְאָמַר: "זוֹ תּוֹרָה" וְכוּ׳), and the others are not mentioned (וְהָאֲחֵרִים לֹא נִזְכְּרוּ), for he is the essential figure in this Tikkun (כִּי הוּא הָעִקָּר בַּזֶּה הַתִּקּוּן). p1-27
And know that through the exile of Egypt and its redemption up to the giving of the Torah, the first corruptions were rectified (וְהִנֵּה צָרִיךְ שֶׁתֵּדַע, כִּי עַל יְדֵי גָּלוּת מִצְרַיִם וּגְאֻלָּתוֹ עַד מַתַּן תּוֹרָה נִתְּקְנוּ הַקִּלְקוּלִים הָרִאשׁוֹנִים), until at Matan Torah, the Israelites were found to be truly free (עַד שֶׁבְּמַתַּן תּוֹרָה נִמְצְאוּ בְנֵי חוֹרִין), in the secret of (Exodus 32:16) “engraved on the tablets” (בְּסוֹד: "חָרוּת עַל הַלֻּחֹת). But when Israel sinned with the Golden Calf, the first corruption returned to its place (אֲבָל כַּאֲשֶׁר חָטְאוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל בָּעֵגֶל – חָזַר הַקִּלְקוּל הָרִאשׁוֹן לִמְקוֹמוֹ). And the Calf is precisely in this same aspect (וְהָעֵגֶל הוּא מַמָּשׁ בַּבְּחִינָה הַזֹּאת), for it is in the secret of “the face of an ox on the left,” which is Mashiach ben Yosef (שֶׁהוּא בְּסוֹד: "פְּנֵי שׁוֹר מֵהַשְּׂמֹאל" – שֶׁהוּא מָשִׁיחַ בֶּן יוֹסֵף). And it was the Erev Rav who made it, for they were those who came out of Egypt (וְהָעֵרֶב רַב הָיָה שֶׁעֲשׂוּהוּ, כִּי הֵם הַיּוֹצְאִים מִמִּצְרַיִם).
And behold, the first corruption caused a further corruption, for afterwards came Yerov‘am, who was himself Mashiach ben Yosef, and he sinned in this same secret by making the calves
Notes
Drops from the Daat (טִפּוֹת מִן הַדַּעַת): See Sha’ar haGilgulim, Introduction 39 (רְאֵה שַׁעַר הַגִּלְגּוּלִים, הַקְּדָמָה ל״ט): And now we shall speak regarding the aspect of the bond among the Chaverim (וְעַתָּה נְדַבֵּר בְּבְחִינַת הַקֶּשֶׁר שֶׁל הַחֲבֵרִים), and I am among them with our teacher, of blessed memory (וַאֲנִי עִמָּהֶם עִם מוֹרֵנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה), and also their bond with one another (וְגַם קֶשֶׁר שֶׁלָּהֶם עַצְמָם זֶה עִם זֶה). And see in our book how in the Daat there are seven extremities of Chassadim (וְעַיֵּן בְּסִפְרֵנוּ אֵיךְ בַּדַּעַת יֵשׁ שִׁבְעָה קְצָווֹת דְּחֲסָדִים), which spread into the body (הַמִּתְפַּשְׁטִים בַּגוּפָא), and corresponding to them are seven Gevurot (וּכְנֶגְדָּם שִׁבְעָה גְּבוּרוֹת). And these are the roots of the Chassadim and Gevurot that extend below into the body And these fourteen roots in the Daat (וְאֵלּוּ הָאַרְבָּעָה עָשָׂר שָׁרָשִׁים שֶׁבַּדַּעַת), are the souls of the twelve tribes and Efrayim and Menasheh (הֵם נְשָׁמוֹת שְׁנֵים-עָשָׂר שְׁבָטִים וְאֶפְרַיִם וּמְנַשֶּׁה). And you already know (וְכְבָר יָדַעְתָּ), that all drops of seed come only from the Daat of Ze‘ir Anpin (שֶׁכָּל טִפְּתוֹת הַזֶּרַע אֵינָן בָּאוֹת אֶלָּא מִן הַדַּעַת דְּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין), which includes Chesed and Gevurah (הַכּוֹלֵל חו״ג). However, there are drops of seed that flow from the very moach of the Daat itself (וְאָמְנָם יֵשׁ טִפְּתוֹת זֶרַע נִמְשָׁכוֹת מִמּוֹחַ הַדַּעַת עַצְמוֹ), while it is still in its place above in the head (בִּהְיוֹתוֹ בִּמְקוֹמוֹ לְמַעְלָה בָּרֹאשׁ). And there are others that flow from the Chesed and Gevurah that have extended and spread into the body (וְיֵשׁ נִמְשָׁכוֹת מֵהַחו״ג שֶׁנִּמְשְׁכוּ וְנִתְפַּשְׁטוּ בַּגּוּף), which is the six extremities of Ze‘ir Anpin (שֶׁהוּא ו״ק דְּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין).
See Menachot 29b (רְאֵה מְנָחוֹת כ״ט, ב׳): When Moshe ascended on high (כְּשֶׁעָלָה מֹשֶׁה לַמָּרוֹם), he found the Holy One, Blessed be He (מָצָא לַהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא), sitting and tying crowns to the letters (שֶׁהוּא קוֹשֵׁר כְּתָרִים לָאוֹתִיּוֹת). He said before Him: Master of the World (אָמַר לְפָנָיו: רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם), what is holding You back? (מַה מְעַכֵּב יָדְךָ) He said to him: there will be a man (אָמַר לוֹ: אָדָם אֶחָד יֵשׁ), at the end of many generations (שֶׁיֶּהֱיֶה בְּסוֹף כַּמָּה דּוֹרוֹת), and Akiva ben Yosef is his name (וַעֲקִיבָא בֶּן יוֹסֵף שְׁמוֹ), who will derive heaps and heaps of Halachot from each and every crown (שֶׁעָתִיד לִדְרוֹשׁ עַל כָּל קוֹץ וָקוֹץ תִּלֵּי תִּלִּים שֶׁל הֲלָכוֹת). He said before Him: Master of the World (אָמַר לְפָנָיו: רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם), show him to me! He said to him: turn backward He went and sat at the end of eighteen rows (הָלַךְ וְיָשַׁב בְּסוֹף שְׁמוֹנֶה עֶשְׂרֵה שׁוּרוֹת), and he did not understand what they were saying (וְלֹא הָיָה יוֹדֵעַ מַה הֵם אוֹמְרִים), and his strength weakened (וְתָּשָׁשׁ כֹּחוֹ). When they reached one matter (כְּשֶׁהִגִּיעוּ לְדָבָר אֶחָד), his students said to him (אָמְרוּ לוֹ תַלְמִידָיו): Master, from where do you know this? (רַבֵּנוּ, מִנַּיִן לָךְ) He said to them: it is a law given to Moshe at Sinai (אָמַר לָהֶם: הֲלָכָה לְמשֶׁה מִסִּינַי). Moshe’s mind was at ease (נִתְיָשְׁבָה דַעְתּוֹ). He said before Him: Master of the World (אָמַר לְפָנָיו: רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם), You have a man like this, and You give the Torah through me?! He said to him: be silent, so it arose in thought before Me
